Kate Chopin was a strong, independent woman. Her strength and independence was surely a result of her upbringing, but being born in the mid-eighteen hundreds, this was not a popular way for a woman to be. As she became a writer, her experiences throughout her childhood and her early adulthood made for some very controversial themes and ideas in her writings. As evidenced by her short story “The Story of An Hour”, Kate Chopin was obviously ahead of her time in that she often wrote of such controversial themes as a woman’s desire for freedom and independence. To understand the controversy of her writings, it is important to understand her upbringing and the world in which she lived.

Chopin was surrounded by strong women and very few men during her childhood. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1850 to a family with money and social class. At the early age of five she was sent to a Catholic boarding school, Sacred Heart, where she was taught by nuns who believed in creating strong women. However, shortly after she got there her father was killed in a train accident, and she returned home. She lived with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother (all three widowed), along with aunts, uncles, cousins, and servants, but “the strongest individuals were the widows” (Kate). Then, two years after her father’s death, Chopin returned to Sacred Heart to continue her education. There she was taught that “young women ought to know science and history to be their husband’s intellectual companions” (Toth 1).

Chopin’s uncommon upbringing was followed by an uncommon adult life. She married a cotton broker when she was twenty. They lived in New Orleans and reportedly had an unusually happy marriage for the time. However, twelve years and six children later, her husband became ill and died. For about a year she took over her husband’s role in his business, which was highly unusual for a woman to do, but then she returned to St. Louis and eventually began to write. Working for a living was another thing that women did not typically do. Very few women worked outside the home at that time. (Howard)

Chopin was an accepted member of society in St. Louis, but “she was not a stereotypical product of her times and so could not conform to socially acceptable themes in her writing” (Hicks). In an online article about Chopin’s life, Ann Bail Howard gives a great description of the culture in which the writer lived “Marriage, said Chopin’s world, was the goal of every woman’s life, service to her husband and her children her duties, passionlessness and submission her assumed virtues, selflessness her daily practice, self sacrifice her pleasure.” Chopin’s defiance to this mindset made her a “pioneer in her own time” (Kate). Elizabeth Fox-Genovese of Emory University calls Chopin “one of the earliest examples of modernism in the United States”, and angelfire.com reports that, “In a time that it was not acceptable for women to speak out about sexuality and independence, Kate screams it in her writing” (Society).

Chopin’s short story “The Story of An Hour” is a prime example of her writing about a woman’s desire for freedom and independence. This is the story of a woman, Mrs. Mallard, who learns that her husband has been killed in a train accident. It is Mrs. Mallard’s eventual revelation in regards to her freedom that was considered to be so inappropriate at the time the story was written. Jennifer Hicks, a director at Massachusetts Bay Community College, says that Chopin “implicitly questions the institution of marriage” in this story. At the beginning of the story we are told that Mrs. Mallard has “a heart trouble” (Chopin 71), as great care is taken in breaking the news of her husband’s death to her. Her initial reaction is appropriately extremely grievous, but then she goes upstairs to her room and wants to be left alone. This is where the reader learns that her heart trouble, while likely a medical condition, also refers to the unhappiness Mrs. Mallard felt in her marriage. Hicks points out that “the problem with her heart is that her marriage has not allowed her to ‘live for herself’.”

Mrs. Mallard is truly sad about her husband’s death, but she soon begins to see past the pain and into the future. The narrator explains that “she had loved [her husband] sometimes. Often she had not” (Chopin 7), and while “she knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her…” (Chopin 7), something within her begins to change. As she sits comfortably alone in her room staring out the window the narrator explains what Mrs. Mallard sees and hears “trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life … the delicious breath of rain … the notes of a distant song … patches of blue sky” (Chopin 7). This description does not depict the setting of a woman mourning the loss of her husband. Rather, it foreshadows her revelation. She sits with a “suspension of intelligent thought” (Chopin 7) as she begins to notice the new feeling. Before she even fully comprehends it, “a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips … ‘free, free, free!’” (Chopin 7). The repression that she felt in her marriage is evident as the narrator reveals Mrs. Mallards thoughts. There would no longer be any “powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow creature” (Chopin 7). She actually finds herself rejoicing at her new found freedom and praying for a long life. Only recently she had feared that she would have a long life. At the end of the story Mrs. Mallard composes herself and returns downstairs only to see her husband walking through the front door. The news of his death and of her freedom had been wrong. At this moment she dies, and the doctors say it was because of the “joy that kills” (Chopin 7). The ironic truth is that she died of the disappointment of her short-lived freedom.

It is easy to understand why “The Story of An Hour” was so controversial at the time. Marriage was considered to be sacred in the eighteen hundreds. Women lived to be married and were content with their secondary positions in life. The idea that a woman would want to be free and independent was quite unpopular to say the least. Hicks explains that Chopin wrote during a time that “a female writer who wrote of women wanting independence would not be received very highly, especially one who wrote of a woman rejoicing in the death of her husband. The fact that she pays for her elation with her life at the end of the story is not enough to redeem either the character or the author.” It is believed that Chopin enjoyed her twelve-year marriage, but being surrounded by such strong women during her childhood, she did not feel that it was necessary for a woman to have to depend on a man. She expressed this time and time again in her writing. Obviously ahead of her time, her controversial stories remained socially unacceptable until about fifty years after her death. Interestingly enough, as there are still inequalities between men and women in today’s world, issues regarding the social roles and responsibilities of women remain relevant to today’s readers.

Al Capone the Myth, the Legend

Al Capone was a heartless man, who did not care about the well being of others; because of this, he killed many people. He led a life of showboating and other such means of a rich and immoral man. His thoughts were only of what would help him to succeed not of what would help others. Al Capones mother was named Teresina Capone. Despite having many growing boys, she was still able to take in sewing piecework. Teresina was a mother of four, and also, she was a housewife. She made sure that the Capones were taken care of. Because of this, it is hard to understand why Al Capone became such a hated criminal. Gabriele Capone was Al Capones father. Since he had the ability to read and write, he was able to get a job in a grocery store, until he was able to get enough money to open his own barber shop. He also wrote literature and poems, when he had the time. Capone grew up in a loving family. His father never hit the kids; he only talked to them. There were no disturbances, violence, or dishonesty about this family. The killer in Capone was thought to have come from when he had gotten his first job. Capone was a role model to many of the boys in the community. He worked for a man named Johnny Torrio. He ran errands, and got paid for it, so he had pocket change. Torrio was a new type of gangster. He was one of the firsts of this new breed and helped with the development of a newly found criminal enterprise. There were other Capone children; not just Al. James Capone was the oldest child. The two other kids in the family at this time, other than Al, were Ralph and Frank. James, Ralph, and Frank were not as well known as Al. This was because Al was the only one working for Torrio. Johnny Torrio moved to Chicago, when 10 came around. Since he moved, Capone started getting into other things. One of these things was gangs. There were many gangs. These gangs were made up of what race they were, and where they were from. Even though he was in street gangs, and was good friends with Johnny Torrio, there was no sign as to how bad this man was going to be. There was only one real disruption in the Capone family. This was when James left the family and went west. Frankie Yale built his turf on aggression and muscle. The Harvard Inn was a bar that was opened by him on Coney Island. Yale hired Capone because Torrio had recommended him. Capone worked as the bartender. Capone learned from Yale that he should control his temper, or soon Capone would be killed. Capone was taken under Yales wing.

Al Capone then met a woman. After awhile, they were married and had a child. He focused mostly on his family and a good career. He moved to Baltimore after he stopped working for Yale. He worked as a bookkeeper for a construction firm. Capone was very reliable and smart, so he was very successful. One of the most perfect places to build a criminal empire, was Chicago. It was open to anyone with enough money to buy it. It was a rowdy, wild, and heavy-drinking place, so it came very cheap. Al Capone came to the city of Chicago in 10. The province of organized crime had become the flesh trade. It was starting to be the main way of organized crime. Big Jim Colosimo was the headman of this city. Together, they earned $50,000 a month. Colosimo owned a top club in Chicago. It was called Colosimos Cafe. He was a pimp, but it seemed that no one cared. Colosimo flashed his richness and glamour around by wearing diamonds and other flashy jewelry all the time. He was a true man of Chicago society; this was because he was handsome, generous, and larger than life. As Colosimos business grew, he brought in Torrio to help in operating and growing this empire. Torrio was able to expand the business unnoticeably. He was not interested in fooling around; he was a serious businessman. Colosimo divorced his present wife, and married a singer, who had stolen his heart. Yale had heard about this, and muscled in on Colosimos enormous empire. Colosimo was assassinated in his own nightclub by Yale. The police eventually figured out that Yale had killed Colosimo. There was a waiter who had witnessed who it was, but would not testify against Yale. So, Yale was able to get away from prosecution. He failed at his attempt to take over Colosimos empire. This was because Torrio was able to keep a hold of the business after Colosimo had been killed. Torrio had offered Capone money and opportunity for advancement, so it was hard for Capone to keep with the bookkeeping job. Soon after all of this had happened, Al Capone began to run Chicago. While he was running it, the mayor was William Thompson, who got along very well with the Syndicate. There has been a succession of Democratic mayors in Chicago, but organized crime leaders had always been running Chicago. There was a political group called the West Side Bloc, who were put together in the days of Al Capone. This political group is still together to this day. As Capone reached his thirtieth birthday, he appeared absolutely invulnerable. He had built a coalition that had reached across ethnic boundaries, and included many different cultures and people. He dominated the business of bootlegging, although he was not the only one in the business. It was the same in gambling and vice trade. Capone manageably arose to his position of absolute eminence, within only a seven-year span. He had the greatest success story that Chicago had seen in 100 years. The government forces began to gather momentum because Capones success gave them the influence. They knew that if they did not hurry up and catch him, that more people would become involved under Capones business. Destiny alternately wanted Capone, although he thought that he was in control. Capone wore clothes that made him out to be a gangster. One style of which was custom-made suits. He loved flattery, and he generously rewarded those who provided it to him. He was a man who showed that he had money, he was not the type who would simply hide all of his wealth, he would flash it around. He especially loved the good life. His explanation of the good life was the best women, food, liquor, diamonds, and silk underwear. Whenever Capone was crossed, he became overcome with rage. It has been reported that he knocked the brains out of several of his boys, using a baseball bat. He did this after he had decided that they had betrayed him. Because Capone was such a violent man, Torrio could use him. This was because Torrio enjoyed the use of power rather than other means. Direct action was the way that Torrio would rather do, than the ability to plan and keep the loyalty of his Troops. Torrio had to use fear to get respect. When he was at the top of his power reign, he sent orders through Capone to the Troops. Torrio was killed. After he had been killed, Capone rose to the top. He celebrated his return to the top with a banquet at the Western Hotel. After many of Capones friends had been killed, he felt he was out of danger, but really was not out of it. Al Capone had been sent into a trial, because of his tax evasions. He had anticipated that he would have to pay heavy fines. He also anticipated that he would be in jail for about five years. He had also figured that he could transact all of his business while still in jail. Capone went to Alcatraz prison for five years. While there, he was living like a king. He had all of the luxuries, except one. That one, was that he could not run anything from Alcatraz, so he would not know what was going on outside. He then went back to court. The judge decided that it would be much better if Capone spent the rest of his sentence in the Cook County prison. Within days of his arrival there, this jail was the newest outpost for him. He handled a lot of his business there. After his sentence was served, he was released. He had slowly begun to deteriorate, until finally, he died of cardiac arrest. In his 48 years of being a well-known Mafia man, he had left his well-known marks all over. Capone has been remembered from all of the things he did. Although these were all bad, and he did nothing for the good, he is still remembered.

In the movie, Breaker Morant Lord Kitchener is as guilty as war crimes as Morant, Handcock, and Witton. Morant, Handcock and Witton are all found guilty of war crimes, for killing many men without having a fair trail and making sure that they were killing these men for the right reason.

These men were placed on trail because of the war crimes they had committed. Once Germans found out that one of their missionary’s were killed, Lord Kitchener was fearful that they would enter the war causing more death, so they put the men on trail for the murder of the missionary.

Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant was found guilty for killing a Boer prisoner. The Boer that he had killed by his soldiers was the man he believes to have killed his to be brother-in-law and a close friend, Captain Hunt. Morant made his felling quiet clear to the audience when he made a remark after something Witton had said. Witton asked him if he killed the prisoner out of pure revenge and anger, Morant said maybe I did, who knows. Morant knew what he was doing was the wrong thing but he wanted Captain Hunts death revenged.

Peter Handcock was also apart of these war crimes he was put on trail for killing a German missionary who Breaker believed had been talking to the prisoners and was going to tell the Germans how the Boers were treated. Handcock also killed prisoners in cold blood for no reason, expect for, those were the orders that they had been given.

Witton was another who was found guilty of killing a prisoner who was about to attack him. The prisoner went for Witton when he had his back turned and when Handcock yelled out he turned around and shot the prisoner in the stomach. Unfortunately, for Witton he killed the prisoner but it was either Witton life or the prisoners.

Lord Kitchener was never found guilty of war crimes but made it obviously that he was a large part of the death of these men. Lord Kitchener killed two men, Morant and Handcock. Although he did not shot them himself, he had them shot just as Morant did to the prisoners he was convicted of killing. These three men did not get a fair trail and yet two of them were killed for their actions. These men did not get a fair trail and yet they still were killed, did Lord Kitchener get away with this unfair act because he was the head of the army? Kitchener should have been put on trail for his actions; although at least these three men got a trail, they did not get a fair trail as some may argue.

In conclusion all these men Kitchener, Morant and Handcock were all apart of war crimes and committing them, so why should two died but one survive? As was said before these men were put on trail for the murder of the missionary the army wanted to make it look like they had paid for what they had done, but the ironic part of the movie is, is that the one murder they were put on trail for they were acquitted of. Which only leaves one explanation of why Handcock was killed and that is, he killed prisoners without giving them a fair trail and if that is the case then Kitchener should be shot for killing prisoners without a fair trail.

Experiences and Emotions in The Things They Carried Three Works Cited Tim OBriens The Things They Carried is not a novel about the Vietnam War. “It is a story about the soldiers and their experiences and emotions that are brought about from the war” (King 18). OBrien makes several statements about war through these dynamic characters. He shows the violent nature of soldiers under the pressures of war, he makes an effective antiwar statement, and he comments on the reversal of a social deviation into the norm. By skillfully employing the stylistic technique of specific, conscious detail selection and utilizing connotative diction, OBrien thoroughly and convincingly makes each point. The violent nature that the soldiers acquired during their tour in Vietnam is one of OBriens predominant themes in his novel. By consciously selecting very descriptive details that reveal the d...

The Heroes of The Things They Carried Eight Works Cited The word hero is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someones life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim OBriens novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraw...

The condition I choose to do my research assignment on is called Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a range of neuromuscular disorders caused by injury to an infants brain sustained during late pregnancy, birth, or any time during the first two years of life. People with cerebral palsy have a wide range of difficulties, from a clumsy walk to an inability to speak or swallow, caused by faulty messages sent from the brain to the muscles. In the mid-1800s, William Little, an English physician, first described cerebral palsy in connection with birth injuries.

Approximately per 1000 individuals in the United States have cerebral palsy. Other countries have reported higher rates. Improved obstetric techniques over the past few decades have reduced the likelihood of brain injury during birth. But increased survival of premature infantsthose born after only 5 to 7 weeks of pregnancy and weighing less than 500 grams (5.5 lbs)some of whom develop cerebral palsy, has kept the incidence in the United States fairly stable.

From birth, a year or more may pass before the signs of cerebral palsy are recognized and diagnosed. The three most common forms of cerebral palsy are spastic, athetoid, and ataxic. An individual may exhibit a combination of these forms, called the mixed type. Spasticity occurs in about 60 percent of all individuals with cerebral palsy. Symptoms typically include reduced movement due to stiff or permanently contracted muscles. Spasticity is associated with damage to nerve fibers in the brain that carry messages for voluntary motor control. Twenty percent of individuals with cerebral palsy have the athetoid type, characterized by uncontrolled movements. This form of cerebral palsy is caused by injury to brain nerve fibers that are responsible for inhibition of muscle movement. The ataxic type of cerebral palsy is unusual, occurring in only 1 percent of cases. It results when the cerebellum (an area at the base of the brain) is injured. Since the cerebellum maintains balance and precision of body movements, affected individuals have difficulty with coordination while walking and moving the upper limbs. Although the term cerebral palsy refers primarily to problems with muscle tone and movement, other disorders may be present. Mental retardation is common but does not necessarily result in all cases. Other associated problems include epilepsy, visual disturbances, hearing impairment, language difficulty, and slow growth.

Advances in diagnostic technology have led to a much better understanding of the causes of cerebral palsy. Over half of the cases are now thought to be due to prenatal causes such as an infection that spreads from the mother to the fetus, maternal stroke that prevents proper blood supply to the fetus, exposure to environmental toxins, or problems in brain development. The remaining cases are due to adverse events such as traumatic birth delivery, premature birth and its complications, meningitis (infection of the brain or its protective coverings), or head injury due to child abuse. Very rarely, heredity plays a role. In some cases, it is difficult to pinpoint a single event that may have caused cerebral palsy.

Buy cheap Cerebral Palsy term paper

Injury to the brain in individuals with cerebral palsy is permanent, and full recovery is not possible. Damaged brain tissue does not regenerate, but to some extent, normal nerve cells and nerve pathways can take over some function from injured areas, with some limitations. The degree of severity varies so greatly from case to case that it is difficult to make a general prognosis. Successful treatment of cerebral palsy requires input from a variety of professionals. Physicians address health issues such as poor eyesight or restrictions in joint motion. Physical and occupational therapists help the child develop skills necessary to the activities of daily living. Speech pathologists deal with swallowing and speech dysfunction. Psychologists and educators work with emotional or learning difficulties. Nutritionists ensure normal growth. These professionals and numerous others work together as a team with the child or adult to help the individual achieve as much independence and competence as possible. In addition, family involvement in treatment, especially with children, is an essential component. With therapy, training, and community support, most individuals with cerebral palsy can lead meaningful and productive lives. Many causes of cerebral palsy are preventable, especially those that occur at or after birth. Good prenatal care has been shown to minimize the likelihood of these causes.

Physical education is an important and essential service for individuals with cerebral palsy. Physical education experiences for students with cerebral palsy contribute to motor, physical fitness, and psychosocial development. The first step to find out what kind of program a student with cerebral palsy will need would be to have the Individualized Education Program meeting between the student’s educators, therapists, and parents. This will help them cooperatively respond to the individual’s educational, social, psychological, and physical needs. Since developing a physical education program for a student with cerebral palsy is individualized, the activities that are selected should be determined by the type and severity of the student’s disability. The physical educator should look at what the student can do and build a program from there. The type of cerebral palsy will also help determine what kind of adaptations are needed. For some students with cerebral palsy successful physical education experiences require a teacher who can adapt when necessary and design alternative methods of teaching. All of these factors can make physical education effective in helping students with cerebral palsy develop appropriate levels of cardio respiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. The Theme of Dreams in A Raisin in the Sun

In A Raisin in the Sun most of the main characters have a dream that they each try to work towards. Walter’s dream was to open a liquor store with the insurance money that his mother got from her husband’s death. Beneatha’s dream was to become a doctor, and she was secretly hoping for some of the money to help pay her way through. Mamma wanted to use this money to buy a house for the family. Each of these dreams revolved around the insurance check that was a total of ten thousand dollars. However, out of these three different dreams, only one became a reality.

Beneatha was the “intellectual” of the family. She considered herself to be above the rest of her family and was always seeking her heritage “Well, do me a favor and don’t ask him a whole lot of ignorant questions about Africans. I mean, do they wear clothes and all that” (57). Beneatha was a major nonconformist and always preached against assimilation. However, she became so concerned to being a nonconformist that she conformed her life around being against anything that was not of Africa or her heritage “Enough of this assimilationist junk!” (76). Beneatha’s dream was to become a doctor and then return back to Africa and practice her medicine there. Beneatha was being hopeful towards the fact that Mamma would give her some of the check to help pay for her medical school. Unfortunately, this aid was lost to Walter in his attempt at his dream of being rich. While it is not known for sure if Beneatha becomes a doctor, the reader or audience is aware that it will be difficult.

Walter was the most aggressive character in the play. All he could think about was getting that money so that he could fulfill his dream of becoming a rich black man. Walter’s scheme was to go in with two other guys to start a liquor store so that he could begin to make a decent living. Walter began to stress out over this dream and was always yelling at his wife and badgering his mom for the money. He felt that no one understood him, and, while this was true, his dream turned into a sham “You just don’t understand, Mamma, and you just don’t understand” (74). Willy took Walter’s and Bobo’s money and ran off with it. This crushed Walter’s dream and severely hampered Beneatha’s dream.

Mamma’s dream was the only one that ever became a reality in the span of the story. Mamma had always wanted a house of her own and a small garden so that she could plant things such as flowers and maybe some vegetables “Well, I always wanted me a garden like I used to see sometimes at the back of the houses down home” (5). When the check arrived she went out and bought a home for the family so they could move out of the “rat-trap” that they were in. This infuriated Walter who was hoping for the check so that he could enter into his “business” proposition with Willy and Bobo. However, Mr. Linder came to their apartment and tried to persuade them to sell their newly acquired home. Walter refused his offer, not once, but twice. Mr. Linder was the community chairman and what the community of Clyborne Park felt was that they do not want Negroes living in their neighborhood. At the end of the play the family was heading towards their new home. How this venture turned out is left up in the air. Trouble is hinted at when Linder says “I sure hope you people know what you’re getting into” (14).

This story can be considered a cliffhanger because one dream is shattered, and the other two have a very good chance of failure. Walter was crushed at being taken by Willy. Beneatha has zero financial backing for medical school. Mamma’s dream of a home is still under the possibility of being destroyed under the wrath of their hateful neighbors. The reader or audience can only hope for the best for this unfortunate family of big dreams.

ENGLISH EXT TASK 1 - Individual and Society (A Doll House)

The word individual is used when referring to a single human being. In society, an individual is particular person, who is considered special, has a distinct character, and possesses a uniqueness that sets them apart from every other person. Although the concept of individuality seems to suggest difference and separation, all humans are influenced by their environment. Is there such a thing as an individual in society? Or are we all just products of our time, and the society in which we live? Henric Ibsen explores this concept through his play; A Dolls House. Ibsen’s play was set in the 1th century, and reflects many aspects of the society at the time, one of the most important being, the role of women. Throughout my speech I am going to explore the role of women in 1th century society and its relation to the topic; The individual and society.

In the 1th century, British women were expected to marry and have children.

The laws were based on the idea that women would get married and that their husbands would take care of them. When a woman got married, her wealth was passed to her husband. If a woman worked after marriage, her earnings also belonged to her husband. Women would usually not work and had no say in matters of business or finance. The idea was, that upper and middle class women had to stay dependent on a man first as a daughter and later as a wife. In Victorian times, a woman’s life wasn’t her own, it was dedicated to her husband, children, and looking after the home.

Cheap Custom Essays on "Individual in society"(A Dolls House)

For a woman, marriage meant a life of subservience. They were expected to present themselves in a manner that was both visually pleasing and endearing to their husbands, and were not to do anything that would cause conflict or disharmony within the family. They therefore were unable to express opinions or interfere with the wishes of their husband in any way.

The expectations and role of women in 1th century society is very successfully portrayed in, A Dolls House, through Nora and Torvald’s marriage. Nora illustrates the role that women played within a marriage and society in general. In the beginning, Nora accepts her respective role in the relationship, which is to please, and look pretty for her husband. He treats her like a possession; something to be played with at whim and she assumes her role as Torvald’s trophy woman.

Nora, is in fact, what would be considered as the perfect 1th century woman, as in the beginning, she lives up to the expectations of the time; to be attractive, uncontroversial and subservient. These expectations of women were generated by the severe patriarchal society of the time. Women were almost forced to assume the role inflicted on them by society, or risk being socially outcast, and left destitute. Severe inequality existed in the 1th century, which suppressed women, making them vulnerable, and left them little choice but to conform. A woman’s identity and status was based on the man that she married and she was judged according to him.

By today’s standards this existence would be considered highly unjust and unfulfilling, but the fact remains that many 1th century women accepted this role imposed on them by patriarchal society, and didn’t know any better.

Many of them were so concerned with social acceptance that they didn’t even consider the concepts of independence and individuality. These women were but products of their time; their identities shaped by society and their lives lived according to its expectations.

Although most women conformed, some women did realise the injustice of being a woman and were unhappy with their existence. They knew that by living according to society’s expectations that they were not being honest to themselves or anyone else for that matter.

Towards the end of the play Nora is made to realise that her marriage is false and that she is unfulfilled. This brings to light an internal struggle where her desire to be socially accepted, conflicts with her desire for freedom, truth, independence, and personal identity. This shows that all humans want independence and a feeling of individuality at some point in their lives but society restricts them.

The point that I raise is that no one can really be considered a complete individual in a society. People are but products of their time, influenced by the people around them. They want to be respected, liked and accepted within society and so conform, at the cost of living a lie and loosing their individuality.

“For Muslims religion is not something set apart from daily life; religion shapes every part of their lives.”

Explain how Islam is constructed as a living religious system.

A living religious system is a religion that is interwoven with the everyday lives of its Followers. Islam is constructed as a living religious system, through Shari’a Law, birth, marriage, Funerary Rites, the Five Pillars, women’s duties and food codes. Through these aspects, it is depicted that For Muslims religion is not something set apart from daily life, but religion shapes every part of their lives.

The Law of Islam, “Shari’a” is legislation that has been developed by a set of regulations, principals and values, and is one example of how Islam is constructed as a living religious system. It is a code of behaviour that contains laws of worship, hygiene and family, which are all imposed and judged. This law is derived mainly from the teachings of the Qur’an, The Sunna, Muslim Doctors and analogical reasoning. Shari’a covers all aspects of life and it develops a country of presumed equality, under the guidance of Allah’s teachings. As Islamic countries are governed by laws that are based on the Qur’an’s teachings, and as punishments, such as flogging and stoning prevail if the law is not obeyed, it is obvious to realize the significance of the Qur’an and its great impact on Muslims in their everyday lives. The Shari’a shapes the daily actions of Islam followers, where even if a woman does not wear a chaddor, veil, she will be imprisoned. It keeps Muslims faithful to the Qur’an by obeying the law

The duties of a woman and their dress codes are also examples of how Islam is constructed as a living religious system. Muslim women are limited and are deemed inferior to men, as creation beliefs see them as only evolving from Adam’s rib. Muslim women are also expected to dress in an unpretentious and sanitary manner, in accordance to Islamic principals, only revealing their hands, face and hair. Wearing a chaddor is a cultural development. The reality that women are treated unequal to men because of Islamic beliefs of creation, and the fact that they cover their bodies to satisfy Qur’an teachings, evidently shows that Islam is a constructed living religious system, where Muslim lives are underpinned by their beliefs that shape every part of their lives.

Islam is also a constructed living religious system because of Islamic divisions between halal and haram foods. Haram foods are foods that are forbidden, such as pork, alcohol, or any substances with intoxicates, even medicines, as well as mind transforming drugs like cocaine. Halal foods are permitted foods, which include meats like chicken, goat, beef and lamb, as long as they are slaughtered in accordance with the halal method. Haram foods are seen to be harmful to the body, and therefore are harmful to Allah. Through these beliefs and practices, it can once again be seen that Islam is a religion that influences all aspects of life, where Muslims shop, what foods they consume, as well as affecting Muslims who suffer from illness. Such practices are derived from the Qur’an and portray the interweaving of religion in Muslim everyday life.

Birth, marriage and Funerary Rites of Muslims are also ways that depict how Islam is a constructed living religious system. At birth, the baby’s father whispers the call to prayer in its ear. Seven days later, a naming ceremony is held where the children should be named in accordance to Allah, Fatimah and other significant Muslims. This clearly portraying how as soon as a child is born; they are exposed to Allah and his teachings. The naming ritual also portrays how Muslim life is underpinned by their beliefs, as even a name must have connections to Allah. Muslim’s are required to marry. The event is simple where the contract, Adq Nikah, is signed and the Qur’an is read. Marriage must be “an act of obedience to Allah”, in agreement to the Qur’an teachings. Since the marriage ceremony revolves around the Qur’an, its influence on everyday life is once again depicted. With Funerary Rites, Muslims must be ritually washed, “wudu”, and then buried, with their head facing Mekkah. This also portrays the religions impact on daily life, as even in death, Muslim beliefs in the Holy city must be portrayed. This all clearly portraying how Muslim life revolves around Islam.

The Five Pillars are also examples of how Islam is constructed as a living religious system. “Shahada”, or the Declaration of faith involves Muslims personally reciting the Kalimah statement of faith, “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet”, many times a day. “Salat” or Prayer, is where Muslims must pray fives times a day, at specific times, facing Mekkah to symbolise their submission to Allah. “Zakat” or Almsgiving is a .5% compulsory tax for the poor, that Islamic countries conduct in order to provide equality between Muslims, thus depicting the Qur’an’s teachings of equality and that Allah owns all wealth. “Salam” or fasting is the month of Ramadan, where all over 14 must abstain from sexual intercourse, eating drinking and smoking from dusk until dawn. This reminding Muslims of their dependence on Allah. “Hajj” or Pilgrimage is the devotional practice that involves Muslims going to Mekkah at least once a lifetime to acquire the “supreme experience of spiritual achievement.” All these Five Pillars are definite examples of how Islam is constructed as a living religious system, as they all portray Islamic beliefs of Allah and Mekkah, which come from the Qur’an. Depicting the Qur’an’s significance and the fact that the Islamic religion shapes every part of a follower’s life, as such practices must interfere with aspects like work duties and incomes.

Clearly, the Muslim religion is a living religious system. The infallible words of the Qur’an, with its beliefs, ethics and rituals are all interconnected with life issues, producing a religion like no other, a religion where daily life and beliefs are thoroughly interwoven. From voting in an election to preparing dinner, no action of a Muslim can be carried out without the consideration of their beliefs.

One person said of Macbeth “Macbeth’s courage is his redeeming feature. Not all the blood he spills can distinguish his native humanity or blot out his splendour.” Another said “Macbeth looses his humanity and descends into bestial.” Do you agree with either person? Explain why or why not.

Macbeth may in fact be courageous. Anyone who has the guts to kill their King and their best friend must be either courageous or slightly mad, neither of which qualify as redeeming features for Macbeth. At certain times during the play, Macbeth’s momentary loss of his native humanity results in his making impulsive decisions. Despite this, Macbeth’s humanity still remains strong throughout Macbeth, depicted by his guilty conscience. The audience is more likely to sympathize with Macbeth’s ‘tragic hero’ character than to be swayed by Macbeth’s courage. However, one could say that courage is not Macbeth’s redeeming feature at all, as courage could be said to be a quality that Macbeth does not possess.

The most apparent changes in Macbeth’s courage and humanity are around the times of his four different murders. Before committing any murders, Macbeth is described by Lady Macbeth as being “too full o’th’milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way”, meaning that he would not do wrong to become King. However, by the time it comes to murder his next victim, Banquo, Macbeth has begun to put his own safety before his moral values and thus enters the ‘dog eat dog’ world. The brutal murder of Lady Macduff and her son is an extremely low point in Macbeth’s humanity, as Macbeth orders their execution for no apparent reason at all. By the end of the play, Macbeth’s level of humanity has begun to increase, as we see when he tells Macduff that he does not want to spill any more of the Macduff family’s blood, yet as a contrast in the same scene, Macbeth fights and slaughters Siward’s son.

In several circumstances, Macbeth’s courage is limited to physical nature, not emotional or mental. In the opening scenes, we see that Macbeth is physically brave and well deserves the praise bestowed upon him. In the second scene of the play, when Duncan is told about Macbeth’s battlefield bravery, he exclaims “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman”. Macbeth may be confident defending himself on the battle field, however we see later in the play that Macbeth is easily influenced by other people, such as the witches brewing the idea of killing the King, and Lady Macbeth talking Macbeth into murdering Duncan by challenging his manliness and courage. How can we say Macbeth is courageous if he cannot stand up to his own wife, nor defend the morals he has previously lived by. Not only does Macbeth murder Duncan, but also the guards in Duncan’s chamber. How much courage does it take for Macbeth to murder innocent, defenseless guards?

Write my Essay on Macbeth's courage cheap

Macbeth’s courage seems to be at its greatest just before Banquo’s murder. Macbeth feels no need to consult his wife about the murder, whereas Lady Macbeth had previously been Macbeth’s backbone of strength. However, during the play, Macbeth’s apparent courage walks a fine line between true strength and a selfish fear of losing what he has. The latter seems more probable. Macbeth fears for his safety and he fears to lose all that he has. Macbeth sees his situation as “to be thus is nothing;/But to be safely thus”, and hence Macbeth is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his safety.

Some may say that Macbeth’s courage in the face of death in the last Act of the play is a sign of strength. Inversely, Macbeth’s apparent audacity is a sign that he is unable to admit his faults and accept the penalties for his atrocious behaviour, which furthermore shows weakness of character. Macbeth’s false courage seems to be a redeeming feature, as the audience pities his yo-yoing confidence and courage.

Macbeth’s remorse more so than his lack of courage is a redeeming feature. Guilt is a human quality that plays a big part in showing that Macbeth still possesses humanity. Even before Macbeth has murdered Duncan, Macbeth’s guilt ridden hallucination of the bloody dagger epitomizes his feelings that killing Duncan would not be morally right. The ‘dagger of the mind’ that Macbeth sees is not ghostly or supernatural so much as a manifestation of the inner struggle Macbeth feels as he contemplates murdering Duncan. Macbeth’s appreciation of human morals also contributes to his remorse and disgust after he realizes what he has done to Duncan. Though Macbeth is a fearless soldier in battle whose sword has been “smoked in bloody execution”, he, like any other morally correct human, feels guilt after committing murder in cold blood. In the feast scene where Banquo’s ghost appears to haunt Macbeth’s conscience, we see that the consequences of Banquo’s murder have diminished Macbeth’s courage significantly.

Macbeth is a character often devoted to evil, yet his soliloquies are so full of eloquent speech and pathos that the audience can not help but sympathize with him. Macbeth is the tragic hero. He may have committed evil deeds, but not necessarily of his own free will. Without influences such as the Witches and Lady Macbeth, it is unlikely that Macbeth would have murdered Duncan, and hence the audience pities him. During the play, Macbeth tries to work fate to his advantage, but to no avail. Macbeth gives a heart-wrenching speech in Scene 1, Act 5, where he recounts his betrayal and loss of friends.

“I have lived long enough my way of life

Is fall’n into the sear, the yellow leaf;

And that which should accompany old age,

As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,

I must not look to have…”

Macbeth’s realization that all he has done is terribly wrong is his biggest redeeming feature, but it cannot make up for his behaviour.

Courage does not serve to compensate for Macbeth’s faults and murders. None of Macbeth’s actions or emotions could possibly make up for his treason, lies and murders of several innocent people, however, Macbeth’s conscience, feelings of guilt and role of the tragic hero play some part in redeeming him in the eyes of the audience, and show that Macbeth has not fully descended into the bestial.

There are many contrasting opinions on the subject. Some believe that the movie is a piece of Nazi propaganda meant to promote the Nazi image and discourage its enemies. Others believe it is a factual presentation of an event, without possessing any intentional propaganda. Whichever the answer, it is well known that Leni Riefenstahl’s career has been haunted by “Triumph of the Will” to this day.

To properly judge whether “Triumph of the Will” was a documentary or propaganda, an accurate definition must be stated. The word propaganda derives from the name of an organisation set up in 16 by the Roman Catholic Church to carry on missionary work, the “Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith” (Congregatio de Propaganda Fide). Today propaganda is seen as the systematic effort to manipulate other people’s beliefs, attitudes or actions. The propagandist has a specified goal or set of goals and to achieve these he deliberately selects facts, arguments, images, etc. to present them in the ways he believes will have the most persuasive effect.

A documentary is defined as a work, such as a film or television program, presenting political, social, or historical subject matter in a factual and informative manner and often consisting of actual news films or interviews accompanied by narration. Originating from official documentation released for various reasons, it has since become the standard name of non-fiction programmes which attempt to present their subject matter based on fact.

In 14 Hitler commissioned Leni Riefenstahl, the only director whom he believed came close to rivalling the work of Eisenstein, to produce an artistic film about the Party convention at Nuremberg, Triumph of the Will. In her book on the film, Riefenstahl notes that ‘The preparations for the Party convention were made in concert with the preparations for the camera work.’ In reality however, the rally was intended from the outset to be the stage for a spectacular piece of film propaganda glorifying Nazism.

Cheap Custom Essays on Was “Triumph of the Will” a documentary or propaganda?

Although “Triumph of the Will” was indeed about the Nuremberg Party Congress, preparations for the rally were carefully constructed around the preparations for the film. The Third Reich’s architect, Albert Speer, carefully constructed the groundwork for the event, with grandiose building arrangements and precise plans for marches. The city of Nuremberg became a stage-set for Riefenstahl’s film, with a sea

of swastika banners, bonfires and torches. Riefenstahl’s cinematic technique creates

a sense of feverish movement and a seemingly endless array of banners and people.

Leni Riefenstahl has always claimed, however, that she knew nothing of the objectives of the Nuremberg Rally. When she described the conception of the film she said, “Shortly after he came to power Hitler called me to see him and explained that he wanted a film about a Party Congress, and wanted me to make it. My first reaction was to say that I did not know anything about the way such a thing worked or the organisation of the Party, so that I would obviously photograph all the wrong things and please nobody - even supposing that I could make a documentary, which

I had never yet done. Hitler said that this was exactly why he wanted me to do

it because anyone who knew all about the relative importance of the various people and groups and so on, might make a film that would be pedantically accurate, but this was not what he wanted. He wanted a film showing the congress through a non-expert eye, selecting just what was most artistically satisfying - in terms of spectacle,

I suppose you might say. He wanted a film which would move, appeal to, and

impress an audience which was not necessarily interested in politics.”

In an interview in 164, reprinted in A Biographical Dictionary of the Cinema by David Thomson, Riefenstahl made clear that she felt “Triumph of the Will” was a recording of an event, not a propaganda film, said, “If you see this film again today you ascertain that it doesnt contain a single reconstructed scene. Everything in it is true. And it contains no tendentious commentary at all. It is history. A pure historical film... it is film-vrit. It reflects the truth that was then in 14, history. It is therefore a documentary. Not a propaganda film. Oh! I know very well what propaganda is. That consists of recreating events in order to illustrate a thesis, or, in the face

of certain events, to let one thing go in order to accentuate another. I found myself, me, at the heart of an event which was the reality of a certain time and a certain place.

My film is composed of what stemmed from that.”

It cannot be denied that “Triumph of the Will” is a record of an event. It is a film

of an actuality and happened when and where the film says it did. In an account of the making of the film, Riefenstahl writes that she was involved in the Rallys

planning - and conceived the event with filming in mind. As Susan Sontag (a revered novelist and director) reiterates in her article entitled ‘Fascinating Fascism’ “The Rally was planned not only as a spectacular mass meeting, but as a spectacular propaganda film.” However, by 1 in The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl, Riefenstahl claimed that she was not involved in the design of the

Rally - I just observed and tried to film it well. The idea that I helped to plan it is downright absurd.

The film was financed by the Nazi Government, commissioned by Hitler himself, completed with the full cooperation of all involved, with huge resources at her disposal - an unlimited budget, crew of 10 and between 0 and 40 cameras. It stands as a powerful artistic representation of the ideas in Hitlers book Mein Kampf - work, extreme nationalism, and belief in corporative state socialism, a private army, a youth cult, and the use of propaganda and the submission of all decisions to the supreme leader, i.e. himself. The film, however, reached and influenced far more people than the book ever could. Riefenstahl claimed in The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl that it was Not a documentary but a work of art, [there was] no commentary in the normal sense of the word. Theres no commentator to explain everything. Thats the way it differs from a documentary or a propaganda film. If it were propaganda, as many say, theyd be a commentator to explain the significance and value of the occasion. This wasnt the case.

In contrast, Susan Sontag in ‘Fascinating Fascism’ claims that it is the

“most successful, most purely propagandistic film ever made, whose very conception negates the possibility of the film-makers having an aesthetic or visual concept independent of propaganda.”

Just as there are critics who argue that “Triumph of the Will” is the filming of an actual event and, as such, is a documentary, there are others who speak

of the sensationalist and propagandist techniques used to promote the event in the film. Images such as the opening scenes, where Hitler’s plane is flying through the clouds, giving a sense of divinity and being “above it all”, and the clever filming

of the crowds watching Hitler’s procession on the streets which give the impression that every street Hitler drove on was packed with adoring people illustrate the use

of these techniques and indicate more suspicious aspirations from the director.

Of course, there are critics who choose a point of neutrality, favouring each side

of the argument equally. They argue that propaganda is a part of all film. Paul Rotha (a famous writer and director of Riefenstahl’s time) said, “In one form or another, directly or indirectly, all films are propagandist. The general public is influenced by every film it sees. The dual physio-psychological appeal of pictorial movement and sound is so strong that if it is made with imagination and skill, the film can stir the emotions of any audience.” Or as Robert Flaherty (often proclaimed as one of the founding fathers of documentary film) so eloquently declared, “Sometimes you have to lie. One often has to distort a thing to catch its true spirit.”

Many can argue the different options regarding “Triumph of the Will”, saying

it is a documentary, it is propaganda, or it became propaganda unintentionally. However, three points which cannot be refuted indicate that Leni Riefenstahl intentionally made the film propaganda. The fact that she was chosen and funded

by Hitler to make the event “appeal to the masses” would immediately let her know that she needed to produce a film which gave the people the impression Hitler wanted. The angles of Hitler above the adoring crowd as he speaks and the scenes of his plane coming out of the clouds are obvious propagandist techniques to elevate and deify Hitler. Finally, the camera angle manipulation in the film, which made the crowds seem even larger than they were, would not be present in a true documentary which sought to produce the facts. This is obvious evidence of conscious propaganda

on the part of Riefenstahl. As such, it is safe to conclude that “Triumph of the Will” was an intentional piece of propaganda meant to persuade the people to follow

certain values.

The following is poem that was written by an Alabama student before being identified and receiving services for ADD.

Teenage Empty

The complications of life are closing in,

Sitting here in the dark room.

Nobody can change what happend back then,

Sweeping away my life like a broom.

We see what weve done and truly regret,

Knowing we cant go back to before.

We try so hard but cant seem to forget,

Losing when you have no more.

We tried to laugh and we really cried,

We act toward others like nothing is wrong.

The pain is ripping on the inside,

To hide our feeling for much too long.

So off into the place called alone,

Weve been there already for years.

Where we are going is still unknown,

For we sit and drown in our tears.

Im going to discuss a very real but usually overlooked disorder of children called Attention Deficit Disorder, commonly known as ADD.

I want you to try and imagine two ditches--each ten feet long and two feet deep and exactly alike. One ditch was dug with a shovel and one was dug with a spoon. You point at the two ditches and say, Dont tell me you cant dig that ditch with a spoon. Theres the proof. You could do it if only you would! And, youre right. It can be done, but youve overlooked one small detail. How much time and effort it took to dig that ditch with a spoon.

This is like comparing a child with ADD to an average child. A child with ADD can do the work, but they have to push themselves twice as hard; thus leading to low self-esteem from years of failure.

ADD is a chemical imbalance affecting about 5 percent of all schoolage children and about percent of all adults. The symptoms are inattention, distractibility, trouble following directions, hyperactivity, mood swings, acting before thinking, losing things easily, depession, daydreaming a great deal, and acting meek or not speaking out in self-defence.

However, ADD is an hereditary physiological problem that can be treated successfully through medication. The most widely prescribed medications are Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Cylert (stimulants given for hyperactivity). Tofranil or Imipramine are the medications given to children who have reached puberty and to adults.

The best treatment for ADD is education. Learning about ADD and supporting yur child, not ridiculing him/her. Counseling for both child and parent is available. Parent training, to learn understanding and help in not denying the problem, is essential. Parents need to learn about the medication and the side-effects. Remember, medication is not a cure, only a help-mate.

Medication brings the brain to acceptable levels by increasing the production of a neurotransmitter in the brain, thus increasing attention. This enables the student to learn, but the school system has to do its part. Trained teachers are employed at each school to help children with learning problems. Parent/school collaboration is very important. Parents need to get involved and stay involved. Help educate the teachers, if necessary.

ADD is a real problem and it can be devastating to a child. These children are often misunderstood. They are quiet often made to feel dumb and are thought to be lazy or just not trying. In most cases, this is not true. The public schools are learning more and more about ADD. If your child has ADD, work with the school system. They are there to help. They are not your enemy.

As parents, we have only a few goals for our childern; That they learn how to learn, how to communicate, how to concentrate, how to get information, how to feel deeply, and how to act wisely. Many people feel that parents of children with disabilities or problems have unrealistic expectations for their children. But like any parent, we only expect our children to be all that they can be.

Barbara Sanders.

Questions to Ask When Hiring

For this concept assignment, we were to choose a position to hire for a center. I have chosen to hire for the assistant teacher position. The reason why I have chosen this position to hire for is that I think a director could get a wide range of people in to apply for the job. Some could be very well qualified while others may not have ever been around children. This of course would have a lot to do with the location of the center, what type of pay was being offered, and what benefits, if any, were tied to this position. There would have to be a very specific type of person that could thrive in an environment such as a child care center. First of course being that they love being around, interacting, and watching children.

I would place an ad in the paper and also on the CORRA website stating that an assistant teacher is needed for full time employment. I would request experience but the right person may be trained. Some of the qualities that I would put in the paper for people to consider before calling or coming into an interview would be an enthusiastic person with creative thoughts on how one might go about difficult or hard situations. Some other types of qualities that would have to absolutely necessary would be that the person has to consistent. They must be consistent in their attitude at work and they must also be consistent with their punctuality as well actually being at work. I would be sure to check all references when hiring before a second interview is even considered. If a

person does have a good record with their past jobs than why would I risk putting children in a situation where they would get to know someone for a week and then not show up anymore. (Please remember that this is in the most perfect world that I am talking about.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Questions to Ask When Hiring in ECE

Some question that I would ask the hiree would include past experiences with children. I believe that you can pick up in people by there gestures and voice, if they are interested in really working with children. You can also tell if someone is applying for all the wrong reasons. I would also ask questions about their most recent job and what problems, if any, they had with that job. The reason why I would ask these types of questions is because I think it is important to know if there were any problems with the past job. If there were any problems I think it is important to know what the potential employee considers as obstacles in the workplace. Then as a the director I could either make a decision on rather this environment would be a good place for the person applying to work or if we needed to discuss further some of the policies that would be expected to follow.

It is almost eight o’clock and you are going to be late for school. You rush to your classroom and set your bags down in time for the pledge of allegiance. Now, imagine that after the pledge has been said and before the principal lists the announcements, the principal asks you to bow your head and prepare to pray. Then, he begins to recite the Lord’s Prayer, you ever so slightly raise your head to look around and observe the other students reciting the prayer along with Mr. Principal. You begin to notice that you are the only one wearing a yarmulke or the girl behind you is wearing a yashmac (a Muslim head piece that covers the face of a female while out in public); however, you see another student wearing a Christian cross around her neck and the little boy across from her is wearing a WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) bracelet. It is only then that you begin to notice the vast variety of religions in your classroom. Suddenly you ask yourself “Why do I have to recite a Christian prayer when I am Jewish and she is Muslim (or vice versa)?” School prayer is a choice and should not be made mandatory for all to take part in.

The diversity of religions in our country is vast, and continues to grow. It is virtually impossible to accommodate all religious groups present in school systems. If prayer is made mandatory, it is only fair that accommodations be made to support all existing religions. Prayer inside school has been a controversial issue for over a century. During the 1th century, there were continual conflicts between Protestants and Catholics over which version of the Bible should be used in schools. During the 0th century, there were conflicts over the precise text of school prayers. This debate has been an on-going issue for many, many years.

In 178, the first of ten amendments were written to the Federal Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment reads

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

Write my Essay on School Prayer cheap

This is a crucial part of our freedom in this country. The foundation that our forefathers built is the seams that hold our country together. If we tear at those seams, they will begin to unravel. Every individual has the right to choose what religion they take part in and when and where to exercise this freedom. United States law prohibits public schools to pray within the classroom. The courts view prayer in the classroom as one example of the government approving one religion over another. The separation of church and state principle is extended to Public Schools as an arm of the government. As interpreted by the courts, the Constitutions First Amendment requires that public school teachers, principals, and boards be religiously neutral they may not promote a particular religion to be superior to any other; they may not promote religion in general as superior to a secular approach to life; they must neither advance nor inhibit religion. In some states, students are allowed to leave the classroom and step into the hall to pray. These students run the risk of being harassed by other students who witness this action. If we allow school prayer to be exercised within in the school as a whole, then we are taking away the freedom of every student to choose which religion he or she wants to take part in. The Constitution does not forbid prayer within the school. A student can come early to class, sit quietly, and pray silently if he or she wants to pray. Students are allowed a moment of silence to meditate or pray quietly to themselves and for those students who are interested they are allowed to gather outside the classroom to pray as a group. If the school has as few as one extra-curricular student-led and student-organized group, then students have a legal right to organize a Bible or other religious club to meet outside of classroom time. There are many different ways to incorporate prayer into one’s school day without involving the school as a whole. Not every student will want to take part in prayer because of different reasons, whether if the reason is that the student is not praying a prayer that is incorporated into their religion or simply because they choose not to pray.

Students have the opportunity to attend one of the over 50,000 places of worship in the United States. School is a place for education; it is a center for learning. If a student wants to pray on a daily basis within a school then parochial schools are the answer. If the issue is money, many of these schools offer scholarships. It is not the school’s place to deprive students of valuable education time by taking time out of the day to pray.

It is time to take action and protect the freedoms that our government has given us. The school is not a place to reinforce someone’s religious beliefs. That is the job for a place of worship. The United States is in dire need of increasing the educational ability of its students. Prayer should be the last thing on their minds. We need to look at the bigger picture as Americans. Freedom is our motto. Why should we take a freedom that we have fought so hard for away by enforcing school prayer? Our main concern, as adults and caregivers to the children of our future, is that we protect them from any injustice that might take away their freedoms.
