and I’d like to welcome you to my Seventh Grade Language Arts class. I am a new teacher to Benjamin Stoddert Middle School this year, and I am very happy to be here. While I am new considered “new” to Stoddert this year, I am not new to teaching in Charles County. I spent six years teaching English for grades through 11 at McDonough High School, and taught 8th grade Language Arts here at Stoddert in the 15-16 school year.


This year we will be following Charles County Public Schools’ Essential Curriculum for grade 7 language arts as well as satisfying the Maryland State Department of Education’s requirements. Much of our work will reference the McDougal Littell The Language of Literature anthology, but we will read a variety of other materials including poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Self-selected reading material is an important part of our program, so it is essential that you choose materials you would like to read during class. Each of the four quarters in the seventh grade language arts program here in Charles County is assigned a theme Individuality, Expectations, Interdependence, and Imagination. Much of our reading and writing will be centered around these four themes. It is also important to recognize that we will be working toward satisfying the requirements that seventh graders pass the Maryland Functional Reading Test as well as the Maryland Writing Test.


MATERIALS


The following items are required for this class. These materials must be brought to class each time we meet. These items must be maintained EXCLUSIVELY for Language Arts class.

GRADING POLICY


All assignments are assigned a point value. Unit tests and major writing assignments and projects will be assigned a greater point value than smaller assignments (such as warm-ups or vocabulary definitions). CLASS POLICIES AND RULES


All school and county policies must be followed in this classroom.


Bring your required materials to class every day, including the novel you are reading independently.


Take your seat immediately upon entry into the classroom, and begin working on the daily warm-up. Do not wait for me to tell you to do so.


If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the warm-ups for the days you were absent from a student sitting near you. Warm-ups will be collected periodically for a grade.


Each student has an assigned seat and must sit in that assigned seat. If I assign you a seat from which you cannot see well, or if there is any other problem with your seat, see me privately and we will discuss it.


If your pencil breaks or you need something to write with for any other reason, you are welcome to borrow a pencil FROM ME. Please do not disturb class by sharpening pencils during class time. Please do not disturb other students by asking to borrow materials.


Turn in all assignments on time. Late assignments will be accepted only in extreme circumstances.


Homework will NOT be accepted late. You will not be permitted to go to your locker or to leave class to go anyplace else to get homework.


Passes to the restroom will be issued only in cases of emergency.


Treat all others the way you would like to be treated. Courteous and respectful behavior and speech are required at all times. You don’t have to like a person to treat them with courtesy. Tacit approval will not be given to those who are disrespectful to others.


Profanity is not acceptable in this classroom.


Personal responsibility is a key to success! Accept responsibility for your own action!
