over the next fiscal year is considered an asset and therefore taxable. Since inventory space is costly, poor inventory management can result in the need to expand warehouse storage and can result in a decrease of profit. The main benefit of keeping high levels of inventory is that it will ensure high level of sales and customer service. This is because a company will be able to meet customer demand.

A major part of financial reporting is the determination of the cost of the ending merchandise inventory. There are four methods that can be used and each method will generate a different outcome and each is used according to a businesses needs. A company that could use all four may be Costco. 1. Specific identification is practical when a company can positively identify which particular units were sold and which are still in ending inventory. Specific identification would be used for companies like auto dealers where they can keep specific records because each auto has a VIN number.

. The weighted average method means that the costs of sales are determined by the average cost of the items were purchased determined at the time of sale. The weighted average is mainly used by gas stations. When new gasoline is purchased it is mixed in the tank with the previous gasoline.

. First-in, first out, (FIFO) method assumes that the first unit making its way into inventory is the first sold. FIFO should be used where inventories (particularly perishables) are kept.

4. Last in-first-out (LIFO) is the opposite of FIFO. This method assumes that the last unit making its way into inventory is sold first. The outdated inventory is therefore left over at the end of the accounting period.

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $0.00 bill. In the room of 00, he asked, Who would like this $0 bill? Hands started going up. He said, I am going to give this $0 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple the $0 dollar bill up.

He then asked, Who still wants it? Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, What if I do this? And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. Now, who still wants it? Still the hands went into the air. My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $0. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE. You are special - Dont EVER forget it..

Count your blessings, not your problems.

Never be afraid to try something new.

And remember amateurs built the ark ...professionals built theTitanic.

If God brings you to it - He will bring you through it.

American poems can be considered social critics because of their references to the outside world. Robert Frost, Edwin Arlington Robinson, T.S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound can be referred to as social critics. In many of Robert Frost’s poems he talks about nature. Frost criticizes people in the world who ruin nature. An example of this would be in his poem Birches were he states, “Like girls on hands and knee that throw their hair before them over their heads to dry in the sun,” he makes the girls seem as if it is not necessary for them to “throw their hair” because it changes their image and helps us understand the poem better. Ezra Pound showed that he was a social critic in his poem A Pact since he talks about the hatred that he had for Robert Frost. Pound is the speaker of the poem and he tells Frost how he feels about him, he criticizes Frost and makes it clear that he does not like him. An example of how T.S. Eliot can be considered a social critic is in his poem The Hollow Men were he states, “this is the dead land this is cactus land here the stone images are raised, here they receive the supplication of a dead man’s hand under the twinkle of a fading star,” you would consider this statement very negative and a criticism to our land that we live on. He states that our land is dead and that you see the entry of a dead hand under the shine of a fading star. Throughout this whole poem Eliot uses death, dying, sightless, empty, distant, fading and other negative words. These words do not have a positive effect on our land and the world before us. America has many poets that criticize the social aspects and the outside world.

Is demand in the school kiosk decreasing due to the sudden rise of prices of certain products?

For as long as I have been in this school, there has always been a kiosk and a dining room, plus the presence of vendors down at the entrance at the morning and afternoon. The dining room has change almost every year since my first year in this institution in 4th basic, but the kiosk has never changed of being in charge of the parent directive, at least until this year. This year, the school board decided to change the control of the kiosk to the same company that runs the dining room, Eurest. In this essay, I will try to review the problems that the new kiosk has had to put up with, specially the problem that involves demand.

Indeed there have been many changes this year, and for the best, since new products have been introduced, such as ‘sopaipillas’, ‘calzones rotos’, and many others. Everything seemed good through the first half of the year, but nothing is perfect. Problems started to appear. Products started to disappear, whilst other were introduced, such as the ‘calzones rotos’. Also prices gradually started to rise. This has decreased demand, especially during the lunch break, since that is the time were the kiosk has more competition, because during this time, the dining room is selling lunches to students and because a man in a trolley goes to the entrance of the school to sell snacks, known to everyone as Juan Carlos. Maybe this doesn’t concern to Eurest, since they run the dining room also, so still, they have a majority in the market shares that is Saint John’s food vendors, but clearly is not as much as it is during the first to breaks, when they have a monopoly. The decrease in demand has been very clear, because during the first half of the year you could see easily that many students went to the kiosk to buy some food, and you could see really long queues, most of the times the students had to run to avoid these queues, during all breaks, even during the lunch one. But, from half of the second trimester and on, these queues have been shortening down, every day a little bit more, especially during the lunch break, although you can say that for some products is a bit of a strategy, like soda can’s. The price of these rose only twenty pesos, making a change of only 6.6%, but since we are in summer, and we are experiencing some hot weather now, the demand for any kind of drink would go, but I think that for this to work, they have to raise every single liquid products’ price up, which they haven’t. So maybe it is only a coincidence.

The change on demand has been clearly notorious, but I thought it might be pertinent to make a little questionnaire to several students, to get their opinions on this matter (To see the questionnaire go to annex 1). A total of four simple questions were asked to thirty students from first, second and third medio. Considering that there are more than a thousand students in this school, and that between those three levels there are at least two hundred and fifty students, the results are pretty insignificant, but they are very good to have an idea of what I am talking about.

live paper help

Basically, twenty five out of thirty (8.%) told me that they are very displeased with the sudden rise of prices, whilst the other five (16.6%) told me that they were unconcerned about this. But, later when I asked them the second question all 0 answered that they were still buying at the kiosk. This is funny, since they are unhappy about the prices, but they still buy the products. This clearly shows us, that the price elasticity for these products is very inelastic, since there is a less than proportionate decrease in quantity demanded. This can be seen in the next graph.

After the third question, sixteen out of the thirty students (5.%) answered that if their income increases they would buy more of the products, and the remaining fourteen (46.6%), said that they would spent the same as before and the rest of their income would be saved. This, tells us that the income elasticity of demand is also inelastic, meaning that if there is an increase in income, there would be a more than proportionate increase in quantity demanded. This, also, can be seen on the next graph.

And finally for the final question, nobody could say to me why the kiosk chose to raise its prices.

Clearly we have somewhat of a situation here, since there is an increase in demand due to the income raise for some students, but this increase is lower than the decrease in demand that have regular students. We can see, that the kiosk in this case is like a restaurant after its first week of opening, since during the first week the restaurant does everything possible to win their clients, but after they have settled down, their only concern is to keep these clients, instead of worrying to have more customers. The same happens here during the first half of the year, the kiosk, was almost perfect, but then, from the half of the second trimester and on, they stopped worrying about the costumers, thus the stop worrying about the students. Just like a restaurant, they stopped worrying about us, and started to worry about themselves, so they raised prices to have more profits. My only advice to the school directive, is to find someone that starts worrying about the students, since we are in a school were the most important thing is us.

FedEx Case

1. Federal Express’ strategy for competing in the overnight delivery industry was inventive as compared to the competition. The founder, Fred Smith, shared a vision of an express distribution service by capitalizing on the need of businesses for speed and reliability of deliveries. FedEx focused on creating a next-day service that was reliable and timely. It took losses in the first three years, but saw an increase in the years following. Also, part of the company’s strategy was to acquire their own means of transportation, technology, and warehousing. FedEx did not believe that contracting or leasing would help its quest for low costs. Recently, FedEx emphasized technology as their competitive advantage over the other delivery companies. It has embraced the Internet as an excellent way of communicating with customers one-on-one and gives them easy access to company information. Federal Express is currently using the strategy of focusing on low-cost, while producing the highest quality and satisfaction for the customer.

The strategy truly evolved since Fred Smith first started the company in 17, but still holds onto the foundation upon which it was built. Technology and competition has forced FedEx to brand themselves not only as an express delivery service, but now a multipurpose company. It reorganized into several subsidiary companies that function independently, but compete collectively under the FedEx name. This move helps each subsidiary to make their own improvements and become the best in the industry without sacrificing other parts at the same time. Its strategy has also expanded more into the global market, finding new markets and cheaper resources. Because FedEx determined that speed is the most important service for most customers, it decided to take hold of the opportunity and fought to be the “Speedy Gonzales” of the industry. Beyond improving their customer service, FedEx also found that this shortened order payment cycles, improved cash flow, and beat all competition.

Federal Express changed their business model to include e-business solutions by putting it as part of the subsidiary companies and making it a priority in their business strategy. The company could see that the market was evolving due to the increased use of the Internet. Therefore, they created an opportunity for customers via the Internet. In the year 000, FedEx went through a reorganization phase, part of that reorganization included changes needed to include e-business solutions. By reorganizing and placing e-business in a subsidiary while maintaining the FedEx name, there was growth and opportunity. Fed Ex is still undergoing some changes to make sure that it stays on top in e-business solutions.

livepaperhelp.com

. Changing industry conditions have dramatically shaped FedEx’s strategy in more than one way. Three main trends (1) the globalization of businesses, () advances in information technology, including the Internet, and () and the application of new technology to generate process efficiencies. As more American businesses expanded past the national boundaries of business, the demand for increased foreign services in transportation and delivery became greater. Thus, the need to refocus the strategy became apparent. Further, advances in technology created a larger demand for services because more businesses and individuals had greater and more efficient access to requests for services. Again, this change created a need for a new, more updated strategy. Finally, as the new technology was being used, customers could place more orders efficiently, the company could run more efficiently, and the demand for service was greatly enhanced because of efficiency. These three trends “paved a road” for the need for a new strategy. This new strategy had to be up-to-date, focusing largely on the increasing use of the Internet and also the world-wide market.

Specific changes that created new opportunities for the company include the following government deregulation of the airplane and trucking industries, trade deregulation in Asia Pacific, technological breakthroughs and applications innovations which include package tracking and more efficient opportunities for customer ordering, and rising inflation and global competition.

. The role information technology has played in FedEx’s strategy is exciting. By using IT as a major part of its business, FedEx has reached an almost entirely new group of people. It has maintained its reputation and increased its business at the same time. IT has created a greater opportunity for customers in the global market. They can now request service, pay for that service, and track the package online. Customers no longer need to speak to FedEx. They are now free to order as they need, twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week. Because of this, FedEx’s strategy has changed. It is now focused on the use of the Internet and other technological advances. Because this is such a critical aspect of the strategy, the implementation of the strategy had to be almost immediate. To compete with other major businesses in the industry, FedEx had to provide a service to customers that could be accessed using technology. They also had to provide a package tracking service. As they developed this service, their reputation and business grew.

Information technology has become an important aspect of FedEx’s operations because of increasing demands in service. As information technology improved, so did FedEx’s focus on its use in operations. The use of IT increased the efficiency of operations and lowered the cost of operations. It provided a marvelous opportunity for FedEx. The company recognized this and soon focused on the use of the Internet for customers for ordering, tracking, and paying for services rendered. In doing so, FedEx immediately found an increase in business, while enjoying a decrease in the demand of cost in operations. Technology creates a way for businesses to be successful; FedEx is a paramount example in this area.

4. FedEx has done several things with its value chain to develop new business. First they have always recognized the need to have technology and IT work to communicate the logistics that they run. They have developed internet technologies that work simply and efficiently to enable customers and sellers to use FedEx as a go between. This has enabled many companies to integrate FedEx technology into their own web sites for customers to use. However, up until January 1, 000 the organization of FedEx was very broad and tried to cater to too many customers without centrally organizing efficiently its information technology. After January 1, 000 FedEx performed a reorganization within the company to develop and initiate new businesses. These new businesses were organized to try and capture more of the logistics and transportation market. FedEx used their established name and brand and applied it across the board for the different silos they have within the organization. It was a smart move to integrate the FedEx name everyone recognizes. They are now centralizing their business and enabling customers to come to one site to get all the services they need.

5. It seems that FedEx is making good efforts and strides to adapt to the changing market. They seem to have a firm grasp on what IT can do to create business. Some possible things FedEx could do would be to continue with its consumer home delivery service. In the future the internet and shopping online will increase among end level consumers and more middle men will be out of the loop. This is an enormous opportunity for FedEx if it develops an efficient infrastructure to support these transactions. It is also important that FedEx continue to develop technologies that make shipping and logistics more convenient and efficient for customers. The industry is very competitive and FedEx must use its image and confidence of its customers to develop and implement new technologies to create the efficiency customers want.

Basic Elements Can Have Advanced Effects On Interpretation

A poem is only appreciated as well as it is interpreted. Poets apply and use different elements to affect the interpretations of a particular poem. In “Mirror” and “To A Daughter Leaving Home,” the poets of each of these poems use the elements of imagery, tone, and symbolism to mold the way their reader decodes the message of their poems.

Imagery is a widely used literary tool in all forms of poetry. A reader can appreciate imagery because it is a representation of something they can recognize using one of the five senses (Sagan ). Imagery is a very basic concept to comprehend in literature, and that is why it is easy for the reader to recognize an object, a taste, smell, or sound and attribute meaning to it. Poets can use imagery to either define a concrete meaning in their poetry, or to perhaps entail a hidden meaning lying in a simile or metaphor. In “Mirror,” the poet uses metaphors to directly relate what the mirror is saying about itself (Plath 74). In the first stanza, the mirror claims to be the four-cornered eye of a god, something that reflects not cruelty, but truth; the mirror states in the second stanza that it has become a lake. The reader may associate a relationship in the first stanza that the mirror is an idol that is worshipped, and therefore is like a god, or in the second stanza, when it states ‘I am now a lake,’ a mental image of a vast body of water surges in the reader’s mind, perhaps used to drown something in. In “To A Daughter Leaving Home,” the poet uses the entire poem (as in a mental image or snapshot) as a memory of a happier time (Pastan 4). Imagery is very important in this poem because it is told as a fond memory; the reader actually gets to see what the poet is thinking because the poet puts the reader into her own unique mindset. The images used bring very concrete meanings to the forefront of the reader’s mind; the only ‘hidden’ meaning found in this poem is a simile found in the last five lines, “the hair flapping behind you like a handkerchief waving goodbye,” and the poet makes sure that not only is this simile easy to understand, but it correlates well with the title of the poem as well, and interconnects the meaning of both the title and the memory. Imagery is a powerful tool that can bring meaning to almost every word in a poem.

Symbolism is also a powerful tool used by many poets, and can incorporate multiple meanings with images to create deeper interpretations. The reader should not necessarily define symbolism as the use of similes or metaphors (Miller 4). Symbols not only make comparisons of two dissimilar things, but the association established in the two dissimilar things yields a meaning that is both literal and figurative (4). The double entendre presented here usually is obvious to the reader, but sometimes is meant for a select few, as in a specified audience. Symbols can be used in terms of making various points to the reader throughout the poem, or simply using the poem as one large symbol for the reader to associate a meaning to. Quentin Miller, of Suffolk University, sums up the function and meaning of symbols as thus,

A symbol works two ways It is something itself, and it also suggests something deeper. …No symbols have absolute meanings, and, by their nature, we cannot read them at face value. Rather than beginning an inquiry into symbols by asking what they mean, it is better to begin by asking what they could mean, or what they have meant. (4)

In “Mirror,” the mirror states that in her, a woman “…has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman rises toward her day after day…” (Plath 74). The mirror uses the previously stated lake metaphor as a means to create a symbol of the aging process. The process is showed as being slow and gradual, in terms of occurring day by day, but still shows the aging of a young girl maturing into an old woman. In “To A Daughter Leaving Home,” the girl in the poem leaves her mother behind for the first time as she rides solo on her bicycle (Pastan 5). The memory in the poem is used to create a past symbol of what is occurring at the present time of the writing of the poem, the daughter is now grown up and leaving home. The analogy of the bicycle ride is very important in its symbolic nature of what is occurring at the time of the poem’s writing; mother and daughter were riding together on the park path until the daughter realized she could be just fine on her own, and now she is leaving her mother’s protection to live her life out on her own. Symbolism is an effective literary tool in that it gives a very important figurative meaning to what would otherwise be considered a literal interpretation.

Tone is also a powerful tool in conveying the correct interpretation to the reader. Tone, in essence, is the attitude of the poet, or speaker, about the subject. When the reader reads the poem, the implied tone used to write the words on the page will become apparent by creating a mood in the mind of the reader (Hammer 75-6). Poets, like actors or singers, can write or say the same phrase in many different ways to get across different meanings (Kennedy 11). The meaning of the literature can be totally lost if either the wrong tone is used, or the correct tone did not get across to the reader. In “Mirror,” the speaker is the mirror itself, reflecting on what it has done over the last several years in the house it has been hung in (Plath 74). The tone of this poem is reflective (just like a mirror) and somewhat sad, but not regretful. The tone used by the mirror produces the idea to the reader that the mirror has feelings, but does not let them affect what the mirror believes is the truth, that the mirror refuses to be biased towards anything. In “To A Daughter Leaving Home,” the speaker is the mother, reflecting on a memory of her and her daughter together (Pastan 4). The tone of this poem is also reflective, sad, and not regretful either. The mother is in essence reminding her daughter that she is ready to leave her mother’s side and begin her new independent life away from home, and the tone used conveys a message of a sort of “remember when” style. The tone used in a poem can have a direct effect on what the reader determines is the meaning of the poem.

Tone, symbolism, and imagery are all integral parts of the interpretations of both “Mirror” and “To A Daughter Leaving Home.” Combining these elements together allows the reader to understand the meaning of the poem that the writer had originally intended. Unlocking the writer’s true meaning of the poem is the reader’s key to appreciating all of the intricacies found therein.

Boeing is faced with a set of decisions that are critical to the health and ultimately survival of the firm. The issues they face are both short and long term. Their strategy regarding the 7E7 market requires that decisions be made and that tactics be defined which propel the company in the short run. Longer term, Boeing must enact a strategy that truly defines its existence as a diversified multi unit firm. On the surface, the framework of the ‘develop versus diversify’ debate is positioned as a mutually exclusive decision that implies little room for compromise. However, this paper will propose a potential strategy that seeks to mitigate this constraint.

Boeing should define a strategy to fund the development of the 7E7. The company has thrived in the past by successfully gambling on cutting edge jet design. This strength in profitably bringing innovative commercial planes to market indicates a prospective competitive advantage that customers, analysts, and some board members feel Boeing should leverage. In some ways, this skill may also be viewed as a core competence that could prove fruitful if they further pursue diversification.

McDonnell and Stonecipher’s conservative approach to development was partially blamed for McDonnel Douglas’ historical demise. Even though their apparent focus on short term stock appreciation is curious given their large personal stakes, the fiscal disciple they seek to institute could have a positive effect on Boeing’s global position.

live paper help

From a ‘comparative’ standpoint, Airbus may have the advantage given the government subsidies, but from a ‘competitive’ standpoint Boeing could reap massive global rewards if they could find inventive ways to develop planes for less. In light of McDonnell and Stonecipher’s very aggressive development savings goals, it’s likely infeasible that the 7E7 could be introduced for less than 40-60% of the 777. Therefore, Boeing should strive to find the answer that is somewhere in between. The key to their short term strategy is to find a way to fund the jet for less. If they are able to do so, they will have funds available for new ventures longer term.

Although typically reserved for business unit rationalization, the growth share matrix provides a useful structure to evaluate Boeing’s existing fleet of jets. The matrix ignores various industry and unit characteristics obviously evident in this case, but with some analytical liberties, it helps frame some key concepts. Specifically, if Boeing does not develop the 7E7 into a star, than it is very difficult to envision a strong financial future in commercial jets. So, if the 747, 757, and 767 are than dogs apt to be naturally divested via superior replacement planes, than the 77 and 777 can be viewed as quasi cash cows in light of the low growth rates of the existing lines.

McDonnell and Stonecipher’s goal of developing 77 and 777 derivatives as the next product offering may not be the best choice. The limited case data indicate the chances of “wowing” the market and redeveloping these lines into stars is bleak. This makes the question mark status of the 7E7 a critical point.

When Boeing merged with McDonnel Douglas, the company took a giant step towards diversification. In this context, Boeing has already broached many of the ‘new business for the firm’ and ‘firm for the new business’ questions. Therefore, the pending issues than relate to the success they can reap from their diversified firm, the degree to which they should continue to diversify, and with the luxury of hindsight, the evaluation of their original motivations to merge and diversify.

In order to justify diversification efforts, the incumbent venture should be gauged against three important criteria revenue & earnings growth, risk reduction, and the repositioning of a core business. In terms of corporate growth in revenue alone, the historical addition of McDonnel Douglas was a wise choice. Although the immediate earnings impact is suspect, the merger immediately impacted the top line by contributing over half of the 00 projections. But what else can the McDonnell Douglas units add?

Stonecipher and McDonnell, key proponents of diversification, have pushed for continued expansion into less volatile areas. Because this motivation alone is insufficient to justify diversification, the duos true motivation is determined by semantics and interpretation. Since cash conservation appears to be their key goal, it is doubtful they seek the relatively expensive option of investing in new units solely to reduce their financial risk. Instead, they probably wish to shift their capabilities to less expensive units with more stable cash flows; which is different than reducing systematic portfolio risk.

Boeings diversification dilemma is ripe with pros and cons. The combined company has a powerful skill set that could add a lot of value to the growing units. For example, many similarities exist between commercial and military planes, and both economies of scope and scale may exist. Scale economies could materialize with the introduction of bigger plants producing common materials with a lower per cost unit. R&D efforts could also benefit from scope economies if certain research could be shared resulting in lower costs than two independent efforts.

However, pursuing diversification and shifting their focus away from their primary product could also have devastating effects. Boeing currently owns 50% of the commercial jet market and halting development of the 7E7 may send a negative message. This perception of sacrificing jets for new ventures may indicate a form of surrender to the competitors and stockholders, especially those interested in the commercial sector. .

Although savings generated from not developing the 7E7 could also position them to win price wars on existing jet lines, Boeings established core competence in bringing innovative commercial planes to market is forgone. This unknown opportunity cost is the essence of their dilemma.

Boeing is faced with an extremely difficult situation. The “catch ” scenario of choosing one option, which effectively closes the door on another option, is precisely what they must combat. The upside of further diversification, coupled with a stellar new product offering, could enable Boeing to soar to new heights. Since pursuing both choices may seem infeasible, the plane development, albeit a cheaper one, should take precedence with residual funds shifted towards new ventures.

The strategy required to make this happen will require tremendous thought and precision execution. The keys to success include pioneering development processes to introduce products for less; continuing to leverage their competence in designing industry leading commercial planes; defining the minimum seed investment for new ventures; effectively applying their managerial competence to new markets; and continuing to develop the management structure and transfer policies for the expanding new ventures.

Free Will and AThe Story of an Hour@

What is freedom?

Freedom is an independent person=s greatest gift freedom to dream, to assert oneself, to drink the Aelixir of life@ Kate Chopin reveals in AThe Story of an Hour@ how relationships and marriage in specific can suffocate one=s freedom and ability to live life with the liberating impulse of their own being. Mrs. Mallard=s free will is stifled by her dull marriage to Brently Mallard. Mrs. Mallard suffers not only from a physical heart ailment , but also from a broken heart as a result of an imprisoned free spirit. By depicting Mrs. Mallard as a broken, weak and imprisoned women, Chopin suggests that marriage can chain down the Astrongest impulse@of an independent women her free will.

livepaperhelp.com

Chopin characterizes Mrs. Mallard as a passive (broken)women with a heart so weak that it could stop beating at the slightest shock. (The first indication that Mrs. Mallard is broken and weak occurs in how Chopin sets the mood of a nursing home. ) AKnowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband=s death.@ Her sister Josephine and her husband=s friend Richards view Mrs. Mallard as weak and broken down and they worry that all the news at once might be too much for her to handle. AIt was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences, veiled hints that revealed in half concealing.@ Josephine is tantalizing with her hints because she believes Mrs. Mallard is too weak and feeble and that the initial shock may be too much for her. Richards Ahad only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message.@ Richards cares for Mrs. Mallard greatly and he feels that he has to be careful and tender in the way he bears the sad message. He=s afraid that if a more careless friend lets Mrs. Mallard know, she may not be able to handle the sad news. However, Mrs. Mallard does not respond to the news of her husband=s death like most typical women would Ashe did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister=s arms.@ Chopin is suggesting that Mrs. Mallard did not love her husband as much as people would expect. In fact , her sudden wild abandonment points more to a buoyant release from a heavy weight than an immobilizing shock of grief . Mrs. Mallard did not react in a traditional way because her love was not completely real Ashe had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not.@ In short, Mrs. Mallard=s actions and reactions following the news of her husband=s death imply that her spirit and will to live have been imprisoned behind the bars of her marriage. Her will has been bent Aby the powerful will of another@ , and now the news of his death has set her heart free.

(The second indication that Mrs. Mallard=s will is chained down occurs in how )Chopin uses the imagery of springtime to symbolize new life for Mrs. Mallard after she has heard the news of her husband=s death. The suggestion is that Mrs. Mallard was not free before her husband=s death, and now as she looks out the Aopen square@ before her, she sees the Atops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life.@ Symbolically, this Anew spring life@ represents the new and free life that Mrs. Mallard begins to birth out of her Avacant...fear A of the unknown. Her senses begin to awaken and her Ahaunted@ physical exhaustion begins to Aquiver@ with new sights and sounds. She surrenders to her heart=s A sound of a distant song@ and she begins to drink in Aa delicious breath of rain@. Furthermore, Mrs. Mallard sees Apatches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds.@ Her will to be free is beginning to appear like the heavenly blue patches of sky , uncovered from the clouds of her life. (Also, the image of blue sky appearing through the clouds implies that Mrs. Mallard=s own will used to be covered up like the clouds that cover up the blue sky. )

(The third indication that Mrs. Mallard=s free will has been chained down by marriage comes from the diction the Chopin employs in describing Mrs. Mallard after the news of her husband=s death.) Chopin highlights Mrs. Mallard=s new gift of freedom by sequencing words such as Aopen@ , Aabandoned@ and Aescaped@. First, she uses the word Aopen@ in describing the window. It is important to note that this diction is applied immediately following the news of Brently Mallard=s death. It can be inferred that Mrs. Mallard=s will was always closed and suffocated inside of her as a result of her obligations in marriage to Mr. Mallard. After the news of the death, Mrs. Mallard=s life begins to change. Everything she sees and experiences is open and full of life like the Acountless sparrows (that) were twittering in the eaves.@ AOpen@ symbolizes that Mrs. Mallard is beginning to open up her heart to this new Aelixir@ of life she is experiencing. In addition, Chopin uses the word Aabandoned@ to imply that Mrs. Mallard is abandoning all the physical boundaries that have been pressing in on her. In the ephiphany of an hour, Mrs. Mallard is abandoning herself to her imagination, and she begins to dream of what it is like to be free and full of life AWhen she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath Free, free, free!=@ Lastly, Chopin uses Aescaped@ to suggest that Mrs. Mallard is escaping from the physical boundaries of her marriage and from her weakened body Ashe saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.@ The use of this specific diction takes the reader into the imagination of Mrs. Mallard during her hour of freedom as she realizes that Athere would be no one to live for during those coming years@ but herself and that Athere would be no powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow creature.@

AStory of an Hour@ (demonstrates how a free will can be smothered by marriage and it) offers ironic twists regarding freedom and marriage. Mrs. Mallard=s freedom and joy in her new free will lasts only an hour. As she walks downstairs Alike a goddess of victory@ the physical door opens and her physical husband walks in. Her heart cannot take the shock of her old physical reality because she had been imagining her new spiritual freedom for an hour. It is ironic that when faced again with her physical reality, she has to die to truly experience the freedom she had been imagining for an hour. (Chopin is implying that 1th century marriages can chain down an independent women=s freedom and ambition so drastically that death is the only way to discover true freedom. ) Mrs. Mallard=s brief ephipnay lit is poignantly echoed by the Romantic poet William Blake To see the world in a grain of sand/and Heaven in a wild flower/To hold infinity in the palm of your hand/And eternity in one hour.

WASHINGTON (Nov. 1) - Supreme Court justices with an average age of nearly 70 wrangled Wednesday over whether workers in their 40s can sue employers for offering better benefits to older colleagues, a type of reverse age discrimination.

It already is clear that people over 40 can sue under a federal age discrimination law when younger colleagues get preferential treatment because of age. Justices will resolve before next summer whether workers over 40 can sue when older employees get better treatment such as cheaper health care or choice work hours.

Some justices joked about their own senior citizen status, but then more seriously focused on company efforts to help older workers stay on the job longer. Many seemed skeptical of allowing the reverse discrimination lawsuits.

Justice Antonin Scalia warned that if the midcareer workers win in this appeal, a law meant to aid older workers ... ends up harming them, a very strange consequence of this legislation.

About 00 General Dynamics Corp. workers in Ohio and Pennsylvania brought the case, claiming they were discriminated against because they were too young to get benefits being offered to older colleagues.

An appeals court ruled that they could sue under the 167 Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Some 70 million U.S. workers, about half of the nations work force, are at least 40

Comparison of two newspapers

In this essay I intend to compare two newspaper front pages. One from ‘The Sunday Times’ and the other from ‘The Mail On Sunday’. Both papers contain the same story as their main article and the journalists describe the stories in full, on the 6th April 00. The stories are about American tanks moving in on the Iraqi capital city, ‘Baghdad’. Although I intend to focus on the stories, I will also discuss the differences in the layout between the broadsheet and tabloid front pages. There are many more similarities than differences between broadsheet and tabloid newspapers, yet each type does tend to have certain characteristics.

Before I begin to compare the two newspapers, I will tell you about the newspapers’ format. ‘The Mail’ is a tabloid newspaper which is a smaller size format than ‘ The Times’, it is written on A paper whilst ‘The Times’ is twice as big as that. ‘The Mail’ is written for a lower socio-economic group, it contains simpler language and very short sentences. This type of language is called Journalese. Journalese is a way journalists shorten vocabulary to produce punchy headlines, rather than headlines that can take up a great deal of space. Most of this vocabulary is rarely used anywhere else and involves unusual use of nouns, verbs and adjectives,“US tanks strike into Baghdad”

Here the journalist uses journalese, by using the word “Strike”. He does this to play with the readers’ emotions. “ Strike” here is also an example emotive language. Whilst the journalist could have used the word ‘go’, he has chosen a word which has a much greater affect

live paper help

‘The Times’ and ‘The Mail’ are national papers that cover the whole of the United Kingdom. ‘The Mail’ is sometimes called the popular tabloid, whilst ‘The Times’ is sometimes referred to as the quality or serious press. This is clearly shown when you look at the two papers.

These papers were released on the same day, April 6th 00 and show pictures of American and English soldiers closing in on Baghdad.

As soon as you look at the two papers you notice a number of differences. ‘The Mail’ is appealing to a mass market, while ‘The Times’ is a slightly more serious looking paper. This is evident because half of the front page of ‘The Mail’ contains a DVD advert and the other half has the paper’s main story. This is done because DVD’s are popular and will attract everyone from children to adults. Whilst on ‘The Times’ three quarters of the page is its main story and the other quarter has an advert about investing, this is done to attract the working population, people such as businessmen.

Also, ‘The Mail’ has a more colourful front cover than ‘The Times’. This again is probably done to attract children and adults of all ages, and to appeal to a mass market.

The title is a very important part of a newspaper article. There is fierce competition to sell newspapers. To attract busy commuters, the front page has to be clearly set out, instantly recognizable as belonging to that particular newspaper and striking enough to catch the eye. Also it is the first thing the reader sees, which sways the readers in their decision on whether they want to read the story or not. The titles from the two papers are completely different. “BloodBath” is the title of ‘The Mails’ article whilst “Us Tanks Strike Into Baghdad” is the title of ‘The Times’. ‘The Mail’s title reinforces the point that this paper is written to attract a lower socio-economic group. “Us Tanks Strike Into Baghdad” is a more descriptive and serious title. It makes it very clear what is going on in Baghdad. The title “BloodBath” on the other hand is a less serious title. It sounds very exciting and the way it is written in block capital letters, sensationalises the story. The title “BloodBath” dosen’t really describe what is going on, so what it is really doing is making the reader want to read on. Also, the size and the way the title is written adds to the impact. Emotive language is used in both titles, but in ‘The Mail’ it is used to create emotion and an idea of dead people, “BLOODBATH”.

The pictures illustrating the articles for each page are different. On ‘The Mail’ there is a picture of scared soldiers in close combat, whilst the one on ‘The Times’ is a picture of soldiers putting out a fire on a US tank. Again the pictures appear to be used to attract their target, economic group and again the picture on ‘The Mail’ is more eye-catching, and dramatic. Design is used both to attract readers and to present material in intresting, effective and eye-catching ways.

The caption under the picture in ‘ The Mail’ is an example of emotive language, “In Iraq’s smouldering capital”.

This is emotive because “smouldering” suggests it has been badly burnt. In ‘The Times’ the caption under the picture describes the story in more detail, “Troops from the rd Infantry Divison battle to extinguish a fire in an Abrams tank in Baghdad yesterday”.

Although in ‘The Times’ the story is described in more detail, I think that ‘The Mails’ article is more effective because the journalist uses dramatic pictures and headings.

Out of the two papers, ‘The Tmes’ has the more writing on it, this is because it is written in more detail. This again raises the point that ‘ The Mail’ is written for a lower economic group.

These are all the differences I found between the two papers. I have learn’t a lot from this essay . The things I learn’t from writing it were what Journalese meant and the differences between Broadsheet and tabloid newspapers, also I learnt that colours, headings, size of writing, etc, are all features that play a majour role in attracting different socio-economic group .

Romeo and Juliet

The characters of Romeo and Juliet are much the same, because they are intelligent, rebellious, they have a lot of things in common, and they have a pure and deep love with each other.

Romeo is a young man of about sixteen. Romeo is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. At first sight he falls in love with Juliet, the daughter of his family’s worst enemy, Capulet. Though he is capable of a very intense love, Romeo is no pretty boy. However he proves himself to be a fine swordsman. He is a passionate, extreme, excitable, and moody young man, well-liked and admired throughout Verona. He is loyal to his friends, but his behaviour is somewhat unpredictable.

Juliet is the daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. She is a very beautiful thirteen year old girl. Juliet is perceptive, with her quick tongue. She can manipulate people well. Juliet never really thought about love or marriage. Then she grew up quickly, and fell in love with Romeo. She demonstrates her love for Romeo very openly. She is an innocent girl, a child at the beginning of the play, and is startled by the sudden power of her love for Romeo. Guided by her feelings for him, she develops very quickly into a determined, capable, mature, and loyal woman who tempers her extreme feelings of love with sober-mindedness.

As you can see there is not much they don’t have in common. They are both good looking, intelligent, and both very caring and sensitive people. So their love for one another is a very deep infatuation love. And their love sees no barriers. The attraction between Romeo and Juliet is immediate and overwhelming, and neither of the young lovers comments on or pretends to understand its cause. Each mentions the others beauty, but it seems that destiny, rather than any particular character feature, has drawn them together. Their love for one another is so undeniable that neither they nor the audience feel the need to question or explain it.

Robert Maynard once said, “Human rights rest on human dignity. The dignity of man is an ideal worth fighting for and worth dying for.” The meaning of this quotation is exhibited in both the novels Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time by Charlotte Culin as well as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. These two novels are both amazing books, communicating to us the tales of two heroes and their struggles. Although these two stories are very different from each other, they also share a great number of similarities. Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest both involve characters who escape their deplorable surroundings, eventually gaining freedom in the real world. As well, both novels involve characters who deal with their problems passively, but eventually make friends and overcome their fears. However, aside from these similarities, both books exhibit many differences. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest portrays a hero able to deal strongly with his surroundings, perceiving the situation for its best. Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time, on the other hand, portrays the main character as a weak individual, subject to frequent break downs due to her frail personality. Also, Charlotte Culin’s narrative ends happily, with the protagonist finally achieving her well-deserved freedom, while One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest ends with the death of the main character. Apart from these topics of comparison, both novels communicate to us a number of strong messages, which reflect upon our lives in the real world.

Both Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest exhibit the theme that although we may fight a battle and lose, we must never give up for victory is only awarded to the strong. Both novels involve characters who face a great many obstacles ahead of them. But rather than give up, the characters of both stories defeat the obstacles, gaining strength along the way. In Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time, Claire constantly faces abuse, from both her mother as well as her grandmother. However, Claire continues living her life, and meeting new friends, who help her to conquer her fear of people and defeat the barrier that prevented her from pursuing her much loved pastime of drawing. Throughout the book, Claire never gives up, and although her mother never does abandon drinking, Claire doesn’t let that discourage her, but keeps fighting, resulting in new surroundings, a new home, and a loving guardian. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, McMurphy arrives at the mental hospital, expecting better conditions than those in jail. However, McMurphy finds himself facing the overwhelming control of Nurse Ratched. Unlike the other patients, he doesn’t conform to her ways, but instead, challenges her authority, devoting himself to getting the patients the privileges they deserve. Although he is overwhelmed by the events which take place, and the injustices that occur, he perceives the situation for its best. Instead of getting discouraged by the new conditions which he faces, he applies himself to improving life for the patients. When McMurphy discovers that his behaviour will determine how long he must spend in the mental hospital, he doesn’t give up. Instead, he uses the time he has to make a difference. He defeats Nurse Ratched’s overpowering authority, establishing a reputation as a hero, or messiah. Although he is eventually sentenced to lobotomy, Nurse Ratched finds herself able to destroy him, but unable to defeat him. McMurphy’s existence provides hope for the patients, and although he died a martyr, the victory was still his.

Both Chief Bromden, the narrator of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Claire belong to dysfunctional societies, and are victims of abuse. They feel oppressed by society, and are prisoners in a world in which they don’t belong. Chief Bromden, as well as his fellow patients at the mental hospital, belongs to a society in which justice and equity are nonexistent. Claire faces similar conditions within her own home. She is the victim of constant abuse, a part of her life that she has never been without. Both Chief Bromden and Claire were taken away from their homes at young ages, their surroundings replaced with deplorable conditions. They are prisoners in their own homes. To aid them in their struggles, both Claire and Chief Bromden develop a means of escape. Claire avoids contact with other people, never making friends. Chief Bromden takes a similar approach, never uttering a word, establishing the impression that he is both deaf and mute. As well, both Chief Bromden and Claire develop protective shields; Claire’s art and Chief Bromden’s fog provide each of them with a temporary haven. However, both Claire and Chief Bromden still have to face the inescapable realities that surround them. Over time, Chief Bromden and Claire make new friends, helping them to break through this barrier. Claire develops close friendships with both Clyde Bowman and Mr. Beasley, who help her to overcome her struggles with her mother and grandmother, enabling her to conquer her fear of people. Chief Bromden befriends McMurphy, and finally overpowers his fears, which were preventing him from pursuing a normal life in the real world. By acquiring new friends, Claire and Chief Bromden receive the support they need to finally escape their cages, and start new lives elsewhere.

While Claire and McMurphy face similar situations, they represent completely different individuals. McMurphy is a strong character, who ends up, by choice, in an insane asylum, under the authority of Nurse Ratched. It was his decision to assume the cover of a mentally insane man, and leave jail for a mental hospital. However, he makes light of the situation, turning it into a game. He improves the conditions, earning the patients more privileges, and destroying Nurse Ratched’s overwhelming control. No longer does she have complete authority over the patients. McMurphy, rather than blaming himself for the present situation, and giving up as the other patients have, decides to perceive the situation for the best. McMurphy sees the glass half full, accepting his current state. He does everything he can to improve the circumstances, both to the advantage of himself and of the other patients. At no time in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, does McMurphy break down. Instead he stands tall, conquering those in the way of his attempts to better the world for his fellow inmates. Although Nurse Ratched is able to destroy McMurphy, by sentencing him to lobotomy, she does not receive the final victory. Though his live ended unfulfilled, his courage as well as dignity lived on, seen through the changes he had made in Ratched’s ward. Claire, on the other hand, is seen as a weaker, much more sensitive character. Like McMurphy, Claire carries a heavy burden having to take care of an unloving mother while at the same time dealing with her harsh beatings. However, Claire is unable to deal with the callous realities that surround her. Often, she can no longer contain her feelings, bursting out in tears. Claire repeatedly runs from those she loves and desperately needs, unable to deal with her mixed emotions. Unlike McMurphy, Claire is not mature enough to understand and cope with her situation. It is only with the help of Clyde and Mr. Beasley that Claire is able to communicate her feelings, and set free her emotions, which had been building up inside of her. With their help, Claire is finally able to trust, a key element that allows her to make sense of her life.

It is interesting to note that Claire and McMurphy dealt with their obstacles in different ways. In the novel Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time, Claire’s emotions accumulate within her, over time, since she is unable to see the situation for what it really is. She does not realize that it is her mother and grandmother who are at fault, rather than herself. Instead of letting society take its course, she defends her family, protecting her unworthy mother from the justices that she deserves. McMurphy, on the other hand, challenges the figures in his way. He challenges Nurse Ratched and the black boys, standing up for his cause, exhibiting both the bravery and courage essential in a true hero.

While both novels are excellent pieces of literature, I find that One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is of greater literary value. Although Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time seems like a wonderful book, in my opinion, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest conveys to us a greater message. While Charlotte Culin’s novel does sound very interesting, it seems to lack the originality and emotional involvement found in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. This book was full of hidden messages, forcing you to make your own judgments about the characters. Ken Kesey’s novel communicates to us the challenges faced in a society of overpowering authority (Nurse Ratched) which stifles humanity and individuality, forcing conformity and estrangements from ones emotions. The novel tells us of the struggles faced by the patients of Nurse Ratched’s mental ward to overcome this authority. While Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time communicates to us a similar message, it is not as strong nor as meaningful. I do, however, think that this book would be worth reading, and although it seems like the commonly told Cinderella-type story, I think it would be very interesting to read.

In the epic poem Beowulf it can be seen as a social commentary dealing with man’s struggle to carve civilization out of a hostile, alien environment. In my own eyes Hrothgar and his crew might not have been as civilized if Grendel wasn’t around, there would be no one to bring them together.

Beowulf is a great hero, separated by his acts of strength and courage. He was willing to risk his life for the life of the his community. At the beginning of when Beowulf first came in the Heorot Hall he wasn’t accepted. People didn’t think that they needed this outsider to come and resolve their problems. Until Hrothgar showed his people that he accepted and trusted Beowulf. To show his people he gave the hero a variety of gifts and treasures. So know that Hrothgar approved everyone started to like Beowulf and became grateful for the duties he was willing to do.

People were fearing Beowulf because they had no knowledge of this hero. Not knowing anything at all bout him increased the challenge of keeping the community civilized as time went on. Everyone was seeing Beowulf as an intruder. One person that wasn’t helping with accepting Beowulf was Unferth. He was trying to bring down Beowulf to his own level. But in the end Beowulf showed Unferth who was the better

person.

Grendel was a monster that created problems and he was also was an entertainer for the community. He was characterized by being uncivilized and known as the outcast. The mead hall would not even be in existence if Grendel was not around. . This was a place for people to come together and to battle Grendel. This was Grendel’s attack place, but every time that he attacked it seemed like the people would just come together.

There is something strange about the monster. He would only come to the Heorot Hall to attack if the victim was either sleeping or drunk. He would only attack if the other was unaware and not expecting anything. He waited and watched every move and when they were unable to fight he would attack. While waiting for Grendel the people would drink, tell stories all night just awaiting the arrival of the monster. These people were unaware that Grendel was there watching and waiting until those people are that their weakest point. He waited until the person could not fight back, that is why he only attacked those who were unaware because he was afraid of getting beat. By doing this he made the community be more afraid of this monster attacking them.

Due to all the commotion in the community they kept themselves secluded from what was going on around them. It made the people live with some kind of fear, that’s exactly how Grendel wanted it to be. It kept the people from doing their usual activities.

Because of the fear they were unable to live their life to the point that they wanted. Everything changed when Grendel entered the poem. No one was the same person.

Yes, people have fears but Grendel was the main fear of the community. These people were not doing much to try and over come this fear, that is why I don’t understand why all these people were upset when Beowulf came around to try and help. He was willing to do what needed to be done and no one else was.

In conclusion, Beowulf was the one the kept the community strong and civilized. He shows how a man is struggling and how he carved civilization out of a hostile, alien environment. Everyone had to come and work as one to defeat the thing that caused everyone to be scared. The community as a whole could defeat Grendel not just Beowulf.

An extremely important part of the American identity is the Puritans. They sought to be simple, yet religiously and morally strict. Though defying several Puritan beliefs Anne Bradstreet shows her great love for her husband through the uses of imagery, poetic devices, and symbolism.

We can see from the poem the strong feelings Anne has for her husband. In the poem, she shows her devotion to her husband in a smooth and simple manner through imagery. Over and over again she expresses her devotion to him with a repetition of images. One such image is presented in lines 5-7. She states “I prize my love more than whole mines of gold or all the riches that the East doth hold. My love is such that rivers cannot quench…” She states here that she would accept nothing in return for the love that she shares with her husband and that nothing could destroy it. Also in line 1, we can see the togetherness Anne and her husband share as she says the two of them are one. Physically, this is paradox. No two people can be united as one. But spiritually, the two complete each other’s life so that, in marriage, they are one.

Anne Bradstreet uses a lot of poetic devices in the poem. Throughout lines 1-, Bradstreet gives their relationship as an example to others with phrases like “If ever two were one,” “If ever one were loved by wife,” and “If ever wife was happy in a man.” In lines 1 and , we see two sound examples of alliteration. The “w” sound is repeated in the phrases “two were one” and “ever wife was.” In line 4, she seems boastful of her relationship (not very puritan-like). In lines 5-7, some may view as a hyperbole. In lines 7 and 8 the rhyme is not exact, like all the other lines. In line , there is an example of synaesthesia; there is no way to purchase or pay for true love. In line 11, when the author says, “while we live, in love let’s so persevere,” we see alliteration of the “w” sounds, alliteration and consonance of the “l” sounds, and alliteration and consonance of the “s” sounds. This allows for the words to flow well. Lines 11 and 1 contain pauses in the middle of the line making the statement more emotional. These pauses are called caesura? Other than poetic devices, words like “thee”, “ye”, “thy”, and “doth” tell us that the poem was written in a 17th century, old-English style.

Last but not least, symbolism. In the th line, she says that his love for her can in no way be repaid. This can be seen as a symbol of how great her love is. In line 10, metonomy is seen with “heavens”. When she speaks of the heavens repaying him, heaven is symbolic of God or life. Finally, in line 1 “Then when we live no more, we may live ever,” she symbolizes that their love is eternal and after they die, they shall continue loving one another. One puritan belief is that one should not become too emotionally attached to anything. Throughout the poem, we can see that Bradstreet is attached to her husband. In line 4 she calls out to other women in a bragging manner, “Compare with me…if you can.” But she later redeems herself in the last three lines. Here she prays to the heaven and speaks of the Puritan life. Maybe all of these symbolize that her love for her husband is greater than her love for God, and that God still remains in her life.

In conclusion, we can plainly see the great love Anne Bradstreet had for her husband; She expresses this through imagery, symbolism, and many other poetic devices. It is left to opinion whether or not she reflected the Puritan lifestyle, but one thing is for sure Anne Bradstreet had a love for her husband that could not be matched by anything on this world.

The Aftermath of a Good Party

My parents had three children and she and my father decided to get away for a few days. It was decided that Linda and I were old enough to watch over my baby sister Cathy and take care of things around the house. They had planned a romatic weekend trip to Florida, their first trip alone since the children happen. Linda and I felt like grown ups because they trusted us to take charge things. My parents were to catch a four forty five flight that evening so Linda and I anxiously the clock because we wanted to make sure our parents did not miss their flight. We has everything worked out, we would put Cathy to bed as soon as they left, than brake out all the goodies. We had been planning for a party for weeks after we heard they were going out of town.

We helped our parents load up the car then we kissed them good by and off they went to the airport. Linda picked Cathy up and we ran back into the house. Let’s make sure everything’s in its place. I stood in the middle of the living room and looked around, the house was nice and clean. I Cathy form Lind and took her up to her room. I knew Cathy always fall fast asleep after a good story. So I read the three bears to her and went to sleep before I got to the middle of the book. I kissed her good night and slowly tipped out of her room while gently closing the door behind me. I then walked to my parent’s bed room door and locked it. Linda was in the kitchen popping pop corn, heating up pizzas and making punch. Now all we had to do was waiting for our quest to arrive. I ran down stairs and yelled to Linda what time is it? She said you have one hour, so what ever it is you’re going to do, do it now. I took the vacuum cleaned out of the closet and re-vacuum the carpet. I was very careful in making sure my vacuum line in the carpet was straight. Lind had waxed all the wood furniture and it sparkled like stair lights, expectedly when the street lights reflecting through the living room window hit the tables. All the furniture was aligned perfectly with the balance of the room. My mother had a beautiful display of crystal figurine inside a tall oak cabinet that she collected during the years she and my father were dating. Lind brought up a plastic crate that was full of tapes from the basement. She had hid them there days ago from my parents. She put them on a glass table near the entertainment center. We looked the house over one last time. Every thing was nice and clean and our baby sister was fast a sleep. Then the doorbell rang and our friends start pouring in.

We all had a really good time at the party, and Linda and I were feeling mighty proud, that we pulled it off. The next morning I got out of bed and checked on Cathy, who was still fast a sleep. As I was walking from Cathy’s room, I heard some gagging sounds coming form the bathroom down the hall. It was Linda; her head was down in the toilet, and she throwing up. I asked if she was Okay, she said she was fine and that it must have been something she drank. She then took a deep breath, stood up and went to the sink and washed her face. She walked from the bathroom and headed down stairs, so I followed behind her. We had no ideal of the aftermath that was waiting for us. The closer we got to the bottom of the stairs; we could smell the aroma of stale cigarette smoke. Linda began to cough and my eyes were tearing up from some smoke that was hovering in the air. Linda and I stood in the middle of the living room with our mouths wide open. For three minutes neither one of us said a word. I think we both wanted to die! There were foot prints all over the walls, and next to the front door, there was a trash can, only the trash was on the floor. The carpet had a long trail of wet dirty, that lean from the living room to the kitchen . It looked as if everyone had mud on their shoes and decided to dance on carpet. My mother’s coffee-table was covered with cigarettes butts, spilled beer and punch. It appears that someone tried to write there name in it. The couch had been moved to another side of the room. And the recliner for some reason ended up in the kitchen. My mothers crystal collection cabinet was still standing, but there were hand prints of tomato sauce all over. The entertainment center doors were all open and our tapes were thrown all over the floor. Some of the tapes were not in their cases; I believe some of our guest walked off with them. The kitchen was so bad it should have been labeled off limit to the public. There was pizza and pop corn every where. Half eaten pizza crust was thrown all over the kitchen counter, paper plates were in the sink. And the kitchen floor was red and sticky. For some reason there were three lawn chairs at the kitchens table and the kitchen chairs were skater threw out the house.

Linda and I began to blame each other for letting the party get out of control. All I could say was it didn’t look like this last night. We knew we were both to blame. We rolled up ours sleeves and started cleaning the houses. We clean that house for the next two days. Most of the time was spent scrubbing the stains out of the carpet and washing the prints off the walls. I know that Linda was praying the same pray I was, to not let out parents find out.

Six hours before my parents were to arrive home, Linda and I looked the house over one more time. We took a deep breathe and looked at each other and we both said together “Alright”! The house looked like it did before my parents left, and that carpet was even cleaner. Finally, my parents had arrived home. They gave us all a big hug and compliment us on how nice the house looked. We felt so released that they could not detect we had a party. Linda and I promised each other that we would never plan a party with out our parent’s knowledge, and we never did. Yet to this day, my parents in no way found out about the party.
