I can be considered lucky because I have almost fallen off a cliff, got chased out into oncoming traffic, fell out of a 50 foot bush, and jumped out of a moving car and still survived. Out off all those incidents I never got hit or near death. I also came out with only nd degree cuts and burns also. Many of those times I came close to getting seriously hurt or killed. None of those times though I got anything broken or needed stitches.


I am lucky because I survived almost falling off a cliff. My sister, Billy, and I decided to go slide down the cliff to swim. So we walked down to the area, we had noticed it said no trespassing, because it was dangerous. We went anyways and as usual we slid down the cliff. We got bored and decided to walk around the top of it. So we were walking around it and all of a sudden I slipped and started falling. My sister noticed and said hold on I will go get Billy.


So she went to go get Billy while I was hanging off the side. At the time I was only 8 and weighed very little, so when I slipped and caught a hold of a piece of weed sticking out of the ground it held me. So there I was dangling over the cliff. My palms were sweating so I couldn’t grip the weed very well. I waited there for five minutes but it felt like an eternity.


I looked down and there was nothing but green trees sticking up like little spikes. I started to slip because the weed had broken. Slowly like an antagonize dream I started to slip. I yelled for help. I managed to catch the edge nothing left but air around me. One hand slipped my heart pounding. I tried to yell for help again but I lost my voice. Suddenly I heard Billy. “Were is he Deidre,” he asked. She broke out in tears yelling “I don’t know I don’t know.” I managed to yell help.” Just as I let go of the side he grabbed my arm. He pulled me up making sure not to let go.

In addition to surviving almost falling off a cliff I am lucky because I didn’t get hit when I was chased into oncoming traffic. When I was ten I went with my cousin Nicole to watch my sister fight another girl. I had just come back from playing baseball with Nicole. As I watched my sister beat up the girl, the girl’s boyfriend showed up with his friends. After the fight the boys went after my sister and hit her. I didn’t know what to do, so I took my baseball bat and started swinging at their heads like they bop its. I beat them up with the baseball bat, then one of them managed to get it.





I saw them get up, and I ran. My cousin Nicole took down two of them. I took one of there bikes and started to ride it. They came out in front of me and I pulled the bike into traffic. I got up to the light and stopped but they were right behind me. So I took a chance and raced across almost getting hit at least 10 times. I rode for a mile down the street, and stopped at a Kroger’s. They seen me and I got chased around the store. Then I took the bike and once more got chased into traffic. A police officer saw them and got his car and chased them down.


I took the bike and dropped it right there on the in them middle of the main road. I ran back to where Nicole and Deidre were. They had left, and so had the people that got beat up. I walked home and saw them their. And told them what had happened. We all had a good laugh and went on.


Besides not getting hit when I was chased into oncoming traffic I survived a fifty-foot drop. I was climbing a bush that had grown as tall as a tree. My sister, my cousin Brittany, and I were climbing a tree. They always were able to get close to the top. So I decided I would climb to the top. They went into get a drink. Before they got in I stuck my head through the top and yelled, “ Hey I made it.” They laughed and walked in. As I climbed down a branch broke and I started falling headfirst. I had my hands extended and yelling as the wind rushed through my body.


As I started to fall I managed to get half way turned around. I hit a branch knocking the air out of me. It had felt as if someone took a slug hammer and hit me in the stomach. I had turned back to my feet. I hit the last branch breaking it. It took me a second to get my breath back. My back was all scratched up and bleeding. I crawl my way inside. Yelling for my grandma. She sees me on the floor bleeding. She picks me up and carries me up the stairs. She pores peroxide on it. It burns at first. But then I get better. I put my shirt back on and go back and play.


After falling out of a tree I am still lucky because I jumped out of a moving car. It was 10 at night. And I wanted to go back to the vocation house. But it was down the street and I didn’t want to walk. Some people my sister had met offered to give me a ride home. So I got in the car. Not know the driver was high or drunk.


They pulled out and hit the curb. Right then I knew there was something wrong and I said I wanted out. They said relax we will be there in a second. I thought about it and decided I should get out. By the time I realized it they were making there way around a tree surrounded by concrete. I figured if I was going to go it was now or never. So I opened the car door and jumped.


Since the car door was open it got smashed when it hit the tree. They hit the curb and thought they had ran over me. I was lying on the ground laying in blood because I rolled through rocks at 0 mph. I stood up, Soaked in blood. At first no one could see me because the car was blocking their view.


My sister though I was hit and open the passenger side beating the heck out of the driver. I walked around numb at first from shock. She said I needed to get home. She couldn’t go with me because she was scared what would happen to her if she were there with me when I walked in. So I walked and in five minutes the pain kicked in.


I crawled the rest of the way. I walked in and my grandma grabbed me and ran me up stairs. Rinsing the blood off me it wasn’t as bad as it had appeared. I had two big scraps on my shoulders, elbows, knees, and hands. Then next day I went with my brother and we played out in the ocean. The salt water burned like alcohol. But it helped by cleaning and scabbing it. I still have the scar on my right shoulder from it. And that’s why I consider myself to be lucky.

To cheat death is to cheat god to cheat god is to prove to be supreme and more powerful than god. The image of an everlasting youthful life is one that humans toy with. The fantasy whets the appetite of any person eager to achieve eternality. Human beings are not gods; human beings inevitably encounter death and lose the game of immortality. The Epic of Gilgamesh narrates the story of the naïve human being who thought that if clever enough, could prove to be one of the few who conquered death.


This heroic poem is named for its hero, Gilgamesh, a tyrannical Babylonian king who ruled the city of Uruk. According to the myth, the gods respond to the prayers of the oppressed citizenry of Uruk and send a wild, brutish man, Enkidu, to challenge Gilgamesh to a wrestling match. When the contest ends with neither as a clear victor, Gilgamesh and Enkidu become close friends. They journey together and share many adventures. Accounts of their heroism and bravery in slaying dangerous beasts spread to many lands. When the two travelers return to Uruk, Ishtar (guardian deity of the city) proclaims her love for the heroic Gilgamesh. When he rejects her, she sends the Bull of Heaven to destroy the city. Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the bull, and, as punishment for his participation, the gods doom Enkidu to die.


After Enkidus death, Gilgamesh seeks out the wise man Utnapishtim to learn the secret of immortality. The sage recounts to Gilgamesh a story of a great flood (the details of which are so remarkably similar to later biblical accounts of the flood that scholars have taken great interest in this story). After much hesitation, Utnapishtim reveals to Gilgamesh that a plant bestowing eternal youth is in the sea. Gilgamesh dives into the water and finds the plant but later loses it to a serpent and, disconsolate, returns to Uruk to end his days. The Ninevite version of the epic begins with a prologue in praise of Gilgamesh, part divine and part human, the great builder and warrior, knower of all things on land and sea. In order to curb Gilgameshs seemingly harsh rule, the god Anu caused the creation of Enkidu, a wild man who at first lived among animals. Soon, however, Enkidu was initiated into the ways of city life and traveled to Uruk, where Gilgamesh awaited him. Tablet II describes a trial of strength between the two men in which Gilgamesh was the victor; thereafter, Enkidu was the friend and companion (in Sumerian texts, the servant) of Gilgamesh. In Tablets III-V the two men set out together against Huwawa (Humbaba), the divinely appointed guardian of a remote cedar forest, but the rest of the engagement is not recorded in the surviving fragments. In Tablet VI Gilgamesh, who had returned to Uruk, rejected the marriage proposal of Ishtar, the goddess of love, and then, with Enkidus aid, killed the divine bull that she had sent to destroy him. Tablet VII begins with Enkidus account of a dream in which the gods Anu, Ea, and Shamash decided that he must die for slaying the bull. Enkidu then fell ill and dreamed of the house of dust that awaited him. Gilgameshs lament for his friend and the state funeral of Enkidu are narrated in Tablet VIII. Afterward, Gilgamesh made a dangerous journey (Tablets IX and X) in search of Utnapishtim, the survivor of the Babylonian flood, in order to learn from him how to escape death. He finally reached Utnapishtim, who told him the story of the flood and showed him where to find a plant that would renew youth (Tablet XI). But after Gilgamesh obtained the plant, it was seized by a serpent, and Gilgamesh unhappily returned to Uruk. An appendage to the epic, Tablet XII, related the loss of objects called (perhaps drum and drumstick) given to Gilgamesh by Ishtar. The epic ends with the return of the spirit of Enkidu, who promised to recover the objects and then gave a grim report on the underworld. Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic poem, the most important work of Old English literature. The earliest surviving manuscript is in the British Library; it is written in the West Saxon dialect and is believed to date from the late 10th century.

New equipment and products are being manufactured every day, many of which are contributing to the destruction of our environment. There are many ways in which our society could reduce the damage to our environment, but our desire for comforts and luxuries is too great. Cars pollute the air, generating electricity creates harmful fumes, and chemicals in many products are destroying the ozone layer. Our craving for comforts as demonstrated in our overuse of cars and electricity is leading to the destruction of the ozone layer, and is not only hurting our families but also other species and the environment in which we live.


Cars contribute greatly to the pollution of our world and we should be looking for energy efficient forms of transportation. It has been etched into our minds that cars are a necessity in life, but this mode of transportation is destroying our world. The environment would greatly benefit if we walked, biked, or car-pooled more often. Studies show that our personal transportation generates 6% of the world’s pollution problems, creating contaminated water, air pollution, and greenhouse gases. The polluted water harms aquatic species, and greenhouse gases are slowing changing weather patterns which affect crops and species in all geographical areas. Our large demand for electricity is another comfort that harms our environment. It is used for many luxuries in our homes, such as lights, air conditioners, and washing equipment. Pollution from coal energy plants cause acid rain and global warming, while nuclear power plants create hazardous waste that pollutes lakes and harms the environment. Is Henry V an anti-war play?

There is then of course great patriotism from Henry and in particular in many of his long speeches which take up one third of all the written text. Shakespeare’s aim was to glorify Henry as in the shows first production there was Queen Elizabeth in the audience. Again after the defeat of the Spanish Armada the nation would have been in a very patriotic mood and this is expressed in the text by Shakespeare. Henry’s speeches are most significant for the fact of him being able to rally his troops ready for battle; they’re very complex in their nature and use numerous animal metaphors and rhetorical questions to get his intensity and passion for war over to the audience. Quite importantly Henry identifies with his troops, showing he is a man and not just a king and this identification with the troops gives the play a huge feel of self belief and patriotism.

In this particular speech Henry uses ‘we’ three times, each time with it meaning more and it shows the brotherhood of war, that they’re in this together, will fight together and die together. Henry is glorified through his speeches in particular by Shakespeare. This show of glory shows how the audience can interpret the play as a pro-war production with the King of England fighting along side his people for the good of his people. Shakespeare also evokes a great sense of honour from Henry and this is particularly important with how Henry’s made his claim to the French throne through the Salic law. His fight for this and the fact that he truly believes his claim is just, and is willing to sacrifice his life for the cause shows emphatically that from this view point the production must be seen as a pro-war one. References to God also appear quite often, this emphasises that the cause for war is just and by using the Lord’s name its how Henry believes he’s fighting alongside him.

There is also the only instance in the play where Henry is alone, and this is his Soliloquy when Henry’s at his lowest ebb. (IV. 1 lines 18-77.) His prayer to God I feel can be interoperated in two ways. He asks for his help because he needs it, the French are stronger than him and this can be seen as a pro-war or anti-war message. Pro-war as he’s asking God for help on the battle field and his men isn’t as strong as the French. Or anti-war as he needs the help of God which could show that war isn’t justified and he maybe doubting his claim and is looking to God for answers and if he wins the battle that will be the answer that God was on his side, but what’s the price he’ll have to pay?


Henry V has been adapted to the big screen on two occasions with each of these being different from the other, respectively. There was the Lawrence Olivier version produced as anti-Nazi propaganda which its effect was said to be ‘Stiffened our sinews, summoned up our blood and gave us the determination to bash Hitler’. It was used to raise the moral of troops is the Second World War by showing the strength of the English when faced in battle. The second production was directed by Kenneth Branagh and this had an anti-war message to it. Still fresh in peoples minds were both the Vietnam and Falklands war and Branagh went about showing how horrific war can be. Olivier left out completely the traitor’s scene with Cambridge, Scroop and Grey as this was a particular anti-war message of mistrust and treachery by those very close to the king. Branagh tackles the situation in a very emotional style, with tears in his eyes and a great deal of sadness of what his close friend Scroop had done to him.

Ingrateful savage, and inhuman creature?


Thou that dids bear the key of all my councels,


That knews’t the very bottom of my soul’

This was further more shown in the Warwick Arts Centre production in which the audience could really feel the pain Henry was suffering when he confronted Scroop and it really gave the sense of the bitter side of war and how one can be betrayed through the greed of wealth.


The play by Shakespeare also portrays the gruesome side of war and this can be seen distinctly as an anti-war message. Over time the original interpretation of the play may have changed due to world events and the 1st Century’s point of view may be that of anti-war. The scene at the siege of Harfleur (III.) portrays a very anti-war message with the manner of Henry’s speech. ‘If your pure maidens fall into the hand/ Of hot and forcing violation? And, ‘Your naked infants spitted upon pikes/ Whiles the mad mothers with their howls confused’. This shows the darker side of Henry and is at the other end of the spectrum compared to his morale boosting Band of Brothers speech. This part of the speech is left out in the Olivier version but shown to its full effect in Branagh’s screen play. It’s very much an anti-war message as it shows the gruesomeness of war and what it can do to the innocent peoples involved. What I feel is a strong anti-war message is when the battle’s over and the death toll is read to Henry. Where there are ten thousand French dead yet only twenty-five English dead. But with the French soldiers it’s the amount of nobles that have died, including people that have appeared in the play like the High Constable of France. This leaves a bitter taste as it shows the price of war with so many men of high quality lying slain in the field. But it could be interoperated as pro-war for the English as not as many have died and only a few nobles, nothing compared to the numbers of French.


Finally when the play comes to the end there is the Epilogue which was wrote in the form of a sonnet and tells of what happened after the victory at Agincourt, which has a strong anti-war message to it. Henry V dies and he leaves it to his son, Henry VI, who then lost France through bad management of his estate.

The Epilogue I feel has an anti-war message to it because it shows how everything was lost after the soldiers and Henry’s brave battles. It was what Henry believed in and he eventually lost his life to it only for it to be lost within months of his death.
