Order your Feminism Embraced-Adrienne Rich paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Adrienne Rich's poetry is considered some of the most meaningful works in modern literature. All of her works are influenced by her political beliefs, social beliefs, and past experiences. Throughout her literary career, she has embraced feminism as one of the cornerstones of her work. Many of her works that take the feminist standpoint include "Living in Sin," "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers," and "A Woman Mourned by Daughters." From Feminism, to rape, to political statements, Rich covers a wide range of topics and I feel that she does it very well. She writes from past experiences and one can feel this as the poetry is being read. Her work not only contains the relationships between men and women, but also the relationships between women and other aspects of their lives. "Rich has a way of choosing images that fit the object she is trying to portray."(A Critical Analysis)

In "Living in Sin," she writes of a relationship between a man and a woman that, at that time, went against her religious and family values. She poetically embodies a woman who cannot come to terms with the fact that her relationship is failing. This woman, throughout the poem, tries to justify her love for this man that no longer exists.

"She had thought the studio would keep itself;

no dust upon the furniture of love.

Half heresy, to wish the taps less vocal,

The panes relieved of grime."(Lines, 1-4)

Within the poem, "writhe," "coldly," and "scraps" are abstract words used to describe the way that she feels in this relationship with this man. When she states "She had thought the studio would keep itself," she is feeling that the relationship would last. She thought there would be no work involved to sustain her love relationship. She dreamed of the fairytale life and now she is coming to the realization that this is not how her relationship is. She compares her love relationship to the upkeep of her household. She seems to be having second thoughts about her relationship with this man.

Meanwhile, he, with a yawn,

Sounded a dozen notes upon the keyboard,

Declared it out of tine, shrugged at the mirror,

rubbed at his beard, went out for cigarettes; (Lines, 15-18)

This is the first time in the poem that you actually hear about the man. One cannot tell if they are married or if they are not. The "sin" spoken about in this poem may not be actually living together out of wedlock. It may just be the "sin" of being together in a relationship and trying to endure being together and not being in love with each other anymore. He is obviously tired of the relationship and feels that the passion is gone in the relationship. Rich's descriptive language in this poem makes you feel the torment that the woman and man in this poem are feeling.

"While she, jeered by the minor demons,

pulled back the sheets and made the bed and found

a towel to dust the table-top,

and let the coffee-pot boil over on the stove."(Lines, -6)

Throughout the whole poem, the woman is attempting to find reasons to stay in love with this man. After the man leaves the home, she begins to clean the apartment to try to keep up the appearance that he and she are still in love. The cleanliness of their

home symbolizes her thoughts of their relationship. She feels that if her home is clean and lovely that her relationship will be too.

Adrienne Rich's poem "A Woman Mourned by Daughters" described two women who are speaking to their dead mother. The poem starts when the mother dies and moves back in time to when the daughters where little girls.

"Now, not a tear begun,

we sit here in you kitchen,

spent, you see, already"(Lines 1-)

The title of the poem implies that they are mourning for their mother but in reality they are emotionally drained from the pressure put on them by their mother before she died. Even though the mother has recently died, they feel more relieved than sad about her death.

"What rises in our throats

like food you prodded in?

Nothing could be enough.

You breathe upon us now

through solid assertions

of yourself teaspoons, goblets,

seas of carpet, a forest

of old plants to be watered"

(Lines, 1-6)

This passage discusses the daughter's feelings that even after the death of their mother, the pressure that their mother put on them is not gone and perhaps never will be. They are still haunted by their mother's words to them and her gestures towards them. They are remembering the way that their mother had treated the daughters while she was alive. Rich uses many descriptive words to describe the mother in this poem. She is compared with a "leaf" and also seen as "crisp as a dead insect." These words give the feeling that the mother was more feared by the daughters than loved by them.

"And all this universe

dares us to lay a finger

anywhere, save exactly

as you would wish it done.

(Line -)

The ending of the poem implies that if the daughters do not carry out their mother's wishes in the way that she would have wanted, even though their mother is dead, that they will still feel the repercussions of their actions.

In the poem, "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers," the quilt that she is making is representing the life that she wasn't able to have.

"Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen,

Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.

They do not fear the men beneath the tree;

They pace in sleek chivalric certainty. (Line 1-4)

The "tigers prancing across a screen" in this poem symbolizes the free and unrestrained life that she was unable to live. Because of her marriage, she is restrained by her husband and has lost the ability to fulfill her life dreams. Her husband is holding her back from all that she has ever wanted. Aunt Jennifer was never allowed to be herself and her husband was holding her back from her dreams.

"Aunt Jennifer's fingers fluttering through her wool

Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.

The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band

Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer's hand."(Line 5-8)

Describing that the ivory needle is hard to pull implies that her longing to be her own person is becoming harder and harder to deal with and it is tearing her apart inside day by day. "The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band" is a sad reminder of the life that she could have had if she had not married her husband.

"When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie

Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.

The tigers in the panel that she made

Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid." (Lines, -1)

Here Aunt Jennifer knows that there is no escape from her present life. She must endure her lack of fulfillment and suffer silently through the life that she has chosen. This is a sad poem but also an excuse for empowerment of women. Women have the power to make their own choices in life and should not have to settle with the life that, in the past, may have been chosen for them.

Adrienne Rich has been a source of empowerment for many women today. She has brought forth all of the issues that involve women and has made it known to all. She has been a pioneer in the feminist movement. "The images she uses throughout her work paint a clear picture in the reader's head, and without ever having to come right out and

say it, you can just see and feel the meaning of the poem. The images pull you in, and make you want to see deeper, further into what might be meant by the poem."(A Critical Analysis) Adrienne Rich is able to take everyday, ordinary life and turn it into a learning experience for those who take life for granted and never get to see the real meaning of life.

The two stories I will be comparing in this essay are Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl and The Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lamb to the Slaughter was written in 154 while The Speckled Band was written in 18. Already we see a difference, they were both written in different centuries. Lamb to the Slaughter is a far more modern story in contrast to The Speckled Band, therefore, we can relate to it more easily. The Speckled Band is a Victorian crime story with Sherlock Holmes, a detective who solves murders. Lamb to the Slaughter is a modern short story with a twist.

The two stories are similar because of their genre. They are both murder / crime stories. However, The Speckled Band is a traditional murder mystery while Lamb to the Slaughter doesn't fit that description. In Lamb to the Slaughter we find out who the killer is immediately, unlike in The Speckled Band, where we find out at the end.

In these stories, both murders take place in a house. But due to the time they were written, they obviously have different settings. Stoke Moran, the murder house in The Speckled Band, is described as being "very old" and that

Custom writing service can write essays on Wider reading

"The building was of grey, lichen-blotched stone, with

a high central portion, and two curving wings, like the

claws of a crab, thrown out on each side. In one of these

wings the windows were broken, and blocked with

wooden boards, while the roof was partly caved in, a

picture of ruin."

This gives us the idea of ‘Gothic Horror' such as Dracula or Frankenstein. The setting also changes in this story. We are taken from the streets of London to the exotic wildlife of India

"he has at this moment a cheetah

and a baboon, which wonder freely over his grounds."

This gives us a variety. Lamb to the Slaughter is different from this. The murder house in Lamb to the Slaughter is described as follows;

"The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn,

the two table lamps alight"

Not only is this a far more modern house in the suburbs, it is also totally different from a traditional murder story. It is unusual and doesn't contain the stereotypical ‘creaky door' or ‘eerie lighting'. It is just a normal home belonging to a family. It is also the only setting in the story; the attention never leaves the house. Except for when Mary Maloney goes to the shop for a short period of time.

In The Speckled Band, Sherlock Holmes is the central character. He is a fictional detective who always solves the crimes. He uses a technique called ‘deduction' which is cleverly used to gain information from witnesses. He wears a ‘deer stalker' hat and smokes a pipe. He also plays the violin. As you can see, Sherlock Holmes is a very sophisticated man. Surprisingly, he is a drug addict, who is addicted to morphine. This could have been a device to make him seem more real. His accomplice, Dr Watson is also a fictional detective. The entire story is seen through his eyes, therefore, we, the audience, could be lacking in knowledge. However, in Lamb to the Slaughter we see the story through the all knowing third person view, looking in on the household. Sherlock Holmes is obviously the detective of the story. In comparison with the detectives from Lamb to the Slaughter he is professional, he thinks before he acts

"his hat pulled down over his eyes, and his chin sunk upon his breast, buried in the deepest thought."

He is always careful, serious and remains suspicious unlike the detectives in Lamb to the Slaughter. They are not as serious and they eat the murder weapon

"their voices

thick and sloppy because their mouths were full of

meat."

This is an example of ‘Black comedy' or ‘macabre'. It is when a serious situation has comical values. For example, the consumption of the murder weapon in this story.

Mary Maloney, the central character in Lamb to the Slaughter, the murderer, is a simple housewife. She has no accomplice or interesting secrets. At the beginning of the story she appears to be an innocent pregnant woman. You could even say that she could quite easily be a victim in another murder story, but not this one.

"Her skin for this was her sixth month with

child had acquired a wonderful translucent quality."

She is a complete contradiction to the murderer in The Speckled Band, Dr Grimesby Roylott. He is described as being an "apparition". Also he is described much clearer as apposed to Mary Maloney

"His costume was a peculiar mixture of the

professional and of the agricultural, having a black

top-hat, a long frock-coat, and a pair of high gaiters,

with a hunting-crop swinging in his hand. So tall was

he that his hat actually brushed the cross bar of the

doorway, and his breadth seemed to span it across

from side to side. A large face, seared with a thousand

wrinkles, burned yellow with the sun, and marked

with every evil passion"

He is a traditional, stereotypical character created for the sole purpose of evil. He is the obvious prime suspect in The Speckled Band. In Lamb to the Slaughter, Mary Maloney is a very plain wife who loved her husband more than anything else. We are told that

"She loved to luxuriate in

the presence of this man"

She also speaks to her husband with an immense amount of excitement and admiration

"I'll get it!' she cried, jumping up"

However, it is when her husband replies to her, that the reader begins to feel sorry for her. He answers her in one or two word sentences, with no affection at all.

"‘Sit down,' he said"

We feel as if Mary Maloney's love for her husband, Patrick Maloney is not mutual. The difference is you do not get this sympathy for Grimesby Roylott, the murderer in The Speckled Band. Instead, he is ‘guilty before proven innocent.'

In both stories, the roles of the women are played quite differently. Mary Maloney, the murderer, is the only woman in Lamb to the Slaughter. She keeps to herself, ‘bottling up' emotions, not asking for help. On the other hand, we have Helen Stoner. She comes straight to Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes for help. In this story, she is the innocent, helpless character. She is described as having

"restless frightened eyes, like those of some

hunted animal."

Strangely, in this story, she is in fact the hunted animal. The hunter is Grimesby Roylott, who missed his opportunity to kill her. She is the hunted animal because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is reflecting social attitudes at the time, portraying the woman as the helpless victim. Whereas Roald Dahl portrays the woman as the murderer.

While reading the stories, we notice that there is a difference in attitude towards the portrayal of women. In The Speckled Band we get the common woman in distress, Helen Stoner, seeking help from a man. Also we have a typical good vs. evil power struggle, Sherlock Holmes being good and Grimesby Roylott being evil. This is different from Lamb to the Slaughter, where good and evil are blurred, leaving the reader questioning their morals. As the reader sympathizes with the murderer, a pregnant housewife.

Men are also portrayed differently in these stories. In The Speckled Band, the man plays the role of a hero, who saves innocent people.

"The instant that we heard it, Holmes sprang from the

bed, struck a match, and lashed furiously with his cane

at the bell-pull"

However, in Lamb to the Slaughter the men come across as ignorant and naïve. Also, in The Speckled Band, the murderer is a man, when in Lamb to the Slaughter the man is the victim. This is another reflection of society in story writing; I believe that these stories have both been manipulated by the social attitudes of the time it was written. For example, when The Speckled band was written, in the Victorian era, men were seen as far superior to women. Women were considered weak and innocent. This differs from the social attitudes in Lamb to the Slaughter.

As we know, these stories were written 6 years apart. Obviously there will be a difference in language. In The Speckled Band long, descriptive sentences are used,

"in a pitiable state of agitation, her face all drawn and

grey, with restless frightened eyes, like those of some hunted animal."

Also, a complex sentence structure is used. It is called Parentheses. This is when a long explanation is used in between two commas. Here is one example

"for, working as he did rather for

the love of his art than for the acquirement of wealth,

he refused"

I have highlighted the text that is in Parenthesis. In Lamb to the Slaughter, these complex structures are not used at all. Instead, we find shortened, ‘idiomatic' expressions and phrases

"‘That's the hell of a big club the guy must've used to

Hit poor Patrick,"

The writing remains simple, with not much descriptive words.

In The Speckled Band, not only the language is complex, but also the plot. It consists of multiple twists and turns. The whole story is actually a report, given to us by Dr Watson. Throughout the story, clue after clue is given to us, but we don't get closure on who was the murderer until the end of the story. We are then told Sherlock Holms' conclusion in the form of a report

"I had come to these conclusions before ever I had

entered his room. An inspection of his chair showed

me that he had been in the habit of standing on it,

which of course would be necessary in order that he

should reach the ventilator. The sight of the safe, the

saucer of milk, and the loop of whipcord were enough

to finally dispel any doubts which may have remained."

Strangely after reading this conclusion, you could say that the audience start to become Dr Watson. These complexities are not present in Lamb to the Slaughter. Instead we are presented with a fairly simple plot. Unlike in The Speckled Band, we find out who the murderer is almost immediately. The only turn in this story is when Mary Maloney is told some disturbing news by her husband. This news triggers her to kill him. This news is actually so important that Roald Dahl has not told us.

"And he told her. It didn't take long, four or five

minutes at most, and she sat very still through it all,

watching him with a kind of dazed horror as he went

further and further away from her with each word."

This is a technique used to keep the audience in suspense. The Audience keep reading as they think that they will find out what it is later on in the story. But they do not.

To conclude, the main element of a detective story is that the villain is caught and justice is achieved. This happens in The Speckled Band, with Dr Roylott's death, but in Lamb to the Slaughter it doesn't, and the villain gets away with murder. Even if they had found her out, they wouldn't have any evidence. The main element is missing in Lamb to the Slaughter, but even so, that doesn't make the story any less exciting. We see both sides of the story. We empathize with Mary Maloney because we have seen her side of the story. But as for Dr Roylott, we remain with the impression of him being a criminal with no morals.

Project Statement

We are Teamq and I'm Paul Nicholas we are doing a database project for the school of IT handeling marks from student coordinators and outputting to the student center. This database will also allow for some prequsite checking to allow students to know when they don't have the prequsites for a unit. It will identify students at risk and also those eligible for prizes.

Why do we plan for contingencies?

Time

• We plan for contingencies because time is usually the most precious resource we have.

• The quicker a project is completed the lest cost all parties involved have to bear

• If a project can be done as quickly as possible there is not only the financial benefit but the expedience of solving the problem.

• So planning for contingencies keep the project in motion a fluid project is a better project then one that comes to an abrupt halt or is sporadic in nature.

Resources

• We plan for contingencies because it allows us to keep out resources in a state of maximum productivity.

• Planning allows each member to act on a task at any given time and for the focus of those tasks to be the ones that produce the most good for the project

Quality

• We plan for contingencies so the quality of service meets our clients expectations

• We work in a service industry so it's important for clients to feel they are getting the best possible work by the best possible people. A client must feel assured that we are competent. Having contingency plans in place so even if things don't quite work out for the best scenario the client can feel assured that we know what we are doing.

What are the ways of Planning for Contingencies?

Critical Path

• By using critical path analysis

• By analyzing the critical path or the path of the longest possible dependent tasks we can see how long the project will take. This is the critical path anything along this path effects the overall duration of the project.

• So these tasks are more important to have contingency plans for. Another task may not have as much importance and as it is being done concurrently then it

• For example in out project the critical path

Being Prepared

• It's important to be prepared for all possible problems that may occur during the life of your project.

• In order to take this into account it is usually best to imagine your worse case scenario and do as much as you can to have a plan for what to do under those circumstances.

• So what are some basic things you can do to be prepared

• You can have standard practices that through which you can be equipped to handle unforeseen problems.

• Good practices involve things like always having backups, cataloging data, having a single point of contact and having methods of communication and planning in which everyone knows exactly what to do in any situation.

Issues

• It is important throughout the project to have a way in which problems can be raised and managed.

• Having an issue log allows you to deal with problems as they occur as well as monitor how they are being resolved.

• An issue log should include the time the issue was raised, who raised it and it should then be assigned to someone as their responsibility for resolving.

• Issues can be things that have happened to the project or things that are yet too happen.

• Planning and tracking such events means that the project is more likely to maintain its momentum.

When should contingency planning take place?

• It's important at the beginning of the project to put in structures that will facilitate the way in which the project will deal with issues and with problems as they occur but it is due to the very nature of the unpredictability of problems that contingency planning must be an ongoing process based on well defined guideline.

What happens if we don't?

• Some people may argue that planning for all these issues that might happen but probably won't is a waste of resources when the real focus should be on the task at hand

• If you don't plan for contingencies your project will inevitably reach a critical point on at least one occasion during its lifetime. When your project has reached a critical point this is not the time you want to think about planning and redefining the way the project is being executed. This is a point where you want to be able to fall back and reassess the situation but be carrying out a contingency plan which could be that work is redirected to another part of the project until the situation is resolved. Or having a plan in place that will allow for this problem in some way.

How did we plan for contingencies

• Team Q structured out project at the very beginning to allow us to have a communication channel that would facilitate the distribution of tasks and a single point of contact through our web site and a team email account.

• The web site that was deployed very early on in the project allow the team to see in one single view

o The members of the project including client and supervisor

o The project abstract, deliverables, milestornes etc

o It also allowed us to schedule meetings as it automatically dispatch emails to the relevant parties.

o The web site also incorporated a team log book that could be updated as well as the all important issue log which allowed the team members to raise or resolve an issue.

• The fact that we had task and their assignments and next meeting etc up on a web site a single point of contact meant that anyone could log on and see what the other members were doing as well as always have a clear idea of where we were in the project.

• The team email meant that if we emailed the client or third party that meant that anyone could follow up on a reply and that it wasn't solely reliant on one person to communication.

• We had our fair share of problems to overcome with every member of the group contracting some illness on at least one occasion our team and our project has not suffered because everyone just seemed to carry on. The reason we could just carry on without an apparent problem is that everyone had a clear understanding on where we were the members of our group concerned with the database new what was going on and if someone wasn't there then they could still carry on. The other members of our group focusing on reports and test data had clear defined tasks and there was never anyone without anything to do.

Progress Report

• We are currently approaching the end of the build phase for out project with fully functioning modules within the database the final task is to link is all together under one functional user interface.

• We are also looking into ways of modifying what we've already done to make it more user friendly call this tweaking if you will. Tweaking so that our end product is really user friendly.

• We have finished the prerequisite checking module as well as a student at risk where we identified students at risk as having more than one fail or a fail below a certain mark.

People often say, Theres nothing interesting in my life. Or, Nothing exciting ever happens to me. Most people underestimate themselves and I am one of those people. I never thought about my life and how interesting it has been, I only thought about the worst times I had been through. Now when I look back upon my life, the blurred memories awake and wait to be unfolded. Every one has their stories on their life about good and the bad things they have done. In my life I think I have done more bad things in my life than good things. I grew in a small town called Lahore located in Pakistan. While growing up my grandmother used to tell my mother that once grown up Hassan will be a very honest person. Even when I was very young I had the habits of a very obedient and an honest boy. My brother named me Hassan, which in Arabic means handsome, and always smiling.

While I was quite young I used to donate money out of my own pocket money so that poor people would live a better life. I remember this one time when my mother gave me my monthly pocket money and I gave it all to this homeless person who used to live close to my house on a street. I would always see him sitting on a stone just staring at the sky; I always wanted to know what he would be thinking. In my heart I wanted to help him because it seemed like life didn't play a fair game with him. So whenever I would get a chance I would give him money, food and even my clothes although, they wouldn't fit him but he used them for blankets. I think I am generous, I care too much about people and inside my heart I can't see people suffering. I make other peoples suffering my own, and try to help them in any way possible so when I was moving to Dallas, Texas I ask my dad to buy the homeless guy an apartment so his life would be a little better. My dad was so proud of me because I was young and I thought of someone else's comfort.

When I moved to Dallas it didn't take much time for people to know that I was a very honest person. I got very popular in high school because I never used to talk bad about people; I always kept everything to my self. People came to me for help, and they always used to share their secrets with me. My girl friend used to tell me that I was the best boy friend that she had ever been with. She always used to tell her friends how nice, sweet, honest and sincere I was. Her mother used to love me so much that she trusted me with her only daughter when before me she never used to life the idea of her daughter dating. I got my girlfriend anything and everything she wanted. She always used to tell me how she loves Paris, and she would want to go there with me someday. So, in the summer of 000 I surprised her with tickets booked for Paris. You can imagine the loving I got after that. I used to be very popular amongst my friends because they found me very easy to talk with. I never made fun of them if they ever wanted to talk to me about personal things. I think that was one reason why my girl friend liked me so much because I listened.

After the summer of 000 I had to move here in California. One of the worst things that ever happened to me was breaking up with my girl friend. I used to think about all the good things that I had done, and all the people that I had helped and in the end I was the one who was broken hearted. I couldn't understand it. After moving to California I realized that there were better things to do then to be an honest person or whatever they called it. I started caring less about people, I only thought my self and did what ever I wanted even if it was bad. I started racing on the freeways and didn't care about anything. I started getting jealous very easily I think this is the beast in me even now. I am a very jealous person, and once I start getting jealous I get angry easily as well. The anger in me and the frustrations in my life lead me to depression. People think that my life is a dream world, a perfect setting of heaven. But they don't know the insights to it. Outside I laugh and try to enjoy with everyone so that I can overlook my problems, but in the end of the night those are the problems that haunt me.

I think one of my good deeds that I did saved my life in the beginning of this year. On the 5th of the February, I was involved in a very dangerous car crash. Early morning me and my friends decided that we would all go to Stanford mall after getting done with our classes. So around three in the after noon we left, with around 5 people fitted in 5 cars. Going around 0 miles an hour having fun on highway 85, I suddenly started having this weird feeling inside me and I wanted my friend to slow down but I couldn't say the words because I didn't want them to think that I was scared. Suddenly one of my friends came into our lane and Beenish who was driving the car I was sitting got very scared and tried to get into the other lane so she could miss the other guy. While doing this she lost control of the car completely. I knew something bad was bound to happen and it did. The car went out of control, and hit the side curb, I tried shouting but nothing seemed to come out f my throat. Next thing I saw was the beautiful blue sky staring down at me, and then I saw darkness. When I woke up I was in the hands of the paramedic, he was asking me my name and the date so he could know if I was in my senses or no. Apparently I was pretty dazed and I had a concussion. Before all this happened, my friends told me that they thought I was dead because I was lying down in the car bathed in blood. Then they told me that I came out of the car, by myself and started asking everyone how they were and then I passed out. I have no memory of how I got out of the car and if I asked anyone about how they were. The paramedics cut my shirt and pants and wanted to check if I had internal bleeding inside, but it was fine. I had cuts all over my body and I was loosing blood very quickly. They put me on a stature and took me in the ambulance. The whole time I was in the ambulance I kept on shouting about how I seen this scene in my dream before, I couldn't believe it, I thought I was dying because the pain was practically killing me. I found out that I had broken my color bone, and 6 ribs. I was in so much pain that I couldn't even shout after a while because it would hurt too much. I came to the hospital not knowing about the other people who were with me at the time of the accident. I heard the doctor saying that there were four survivors and one fatality. I couldn't believe it, I was in shock the one of my friends died, and I passed out. When I woke up I was naked in the bed with tons or blankets resting on top of me. I couldn't move anything; there was this immense pain in my back and shoulders, it was unbearable. Next day when my friends came in to visit me told me that no one died and everyone is alive. One of my friends got seriously injured and was in the verge of loosing her life. After 8 surgeries on her brain she was finally out of danger. I stayed in the hospital for months and I had to drop out for the spring quarter. The memory of the pain that I had to go through and that time still haunts me. One day before the accident, I was in San Francisco partying with my cousins and I saw this homeless guy out on the streets begging for money for food. I talked to him for 10 minutes and asked him about his life and gave him around 100 dollars. He said he will pray for me so that I would have a long life, I think after that accident I was alive because of this prayers. I think one of my inner beauties saved me that day.

After the accident I realized how much life is worth living and it really changed me inside out. I stopped doing the bad things I had started. While I was growing up I got this habit of lying to people, I don't know where I got it from but I would lie so much to people, and in the end it became my weakness. Lying got me in so much trouble one time. One time I was grounded and I wasn't allowed to go to parties, and no one knew I had a girl friend not even my mother. So I left home telling my mom that I was going to the library to study with a bunch of people. Instead, I ended up going to San Francisco with my girl friend. Meanwhile, my mom went looking for me in the library and I was no where to be found so she got suspicious. She called me on my cell phone and I was stupid enough to tell her that I was still in the library, so she asked me where I was, and I told her what part of the library I was sitting in. she knew I wasn't there, so she got so mad at me. When I got home, I was in so much trouble I never imagined my mother would be angry with me to the extent of not talking with me for the whole entire day or the next. From that moment on, my mom wouldn't let me go anywhere and she wouldn't trust me with anything I was under watch all the time. I felt so guilty inside and from that day on I promised my self that I would never lie again. I learned my lesson, and since that day I haven't lied to my mom about anything because I know that whenever I lie, I would have to lie about another thing to cover it and eventually I will be caught and loose all the trust that mom my has on me.

One of the bad things about me is that I am a money waster. I have wasted so much money in the past few weeks that if my dad finds out he will kick me out of his house. Whenever I go shopping I always get unnecessary things and when I really need the money for something important I don't have any but with this, one of my beauties is to help others in their money problems. So I think that makes up for the bad things I do or have done in my life.

One of my beauties is that I am very dependable guy and people can always relay on me. I keep my word and I do anything people want me to for them if they really need me. Along with that my beast is that I am a very picky person, I don't usually get along with everyone. I have this certain types of people that I can really get along with. If in my heart I decide they I don't like a certain person no matter what he or she does, wouldn't change my decision. He or she will stay bad in front of my eyes and I would never get along with them. I think I should get rid of this habit because there are some good people whom I don't talk with and don't associate with. I think the good deeds that I have done in my life have had a great impact on the way I am living right now. I think over all I am very nice person, easy to get along, and can make an ideal friend

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a time of great change in America. In the mid-nineteenth century, Americans began to experience a shift in focus from the once stringent religious outlook to a more scientific view of the world and its natural wonders. Americans, however, did look at these new scientific discoveries with much hesitation, questioning their long-term effects on society as a whole. Hawthorne' s work, "The Birth Mark echoes these sentiments and combine natural faith with a confidence in science to make a very interesting tale. This tale and its morality convey a message to the reader that there is a price for tampering with the natural order of things. This story opens by explaining how educated and knowledgeable Aylmer is, and the narrator even suggests that he may have the power to alter nature. " We know not whether Aylmer possesses this degree of faith in man's ultimate control over nature (Birthmark, 16 )."As Aylmer tries to use science to alter nature, or in this case, the birthmark on his wife's cheek, his plan backfires and his wife dies. The death of Georgiana shows that knowledge is dangerous if used in the wrong way. The influence of the evolution of culture has caused men to educate themselves, and learn extensive amounts about science. However, some men like Aylmer take advantage of their intelligence and try to play the role of God. Aylmer allowed his mind to consume his heart, resulting in the senseless death of his beautiful wife. Culture teaches men that if they learn enough that they can manipulate nature; however, in the Birthmark, Hawthorne shows that intelligence still can't overcome nature and thus culture is self-destructive. The fact the whole story is about removing a physical flaw from Georgiana's face when she is already obviously beautiful demonstrates the degree to which Aylmer has allowed this pursuit of knowledge and culture to destroy his ability to perceive nature's beauty. In this text, Georgiana and her birthmark represent nature, and culture is represented by Aylmer. Culture has taught men to question the flaws of women that they once found intriguing, therefore Aylmer is challenging nature when he tries to remove it. Aylmer is so wrapped up in this culture that he treats Georgiana as property. Her opinion about the removal of the birthmark was of little concern to him. Therefore, culture asserts that it is not only a separate entity from nature but that it has superior qualities. Because of Aylmer's belief that culture is superior to nature, the Creator of nature and culture alike chose to punish him. The punishment was not in an effort to be vengeful, but to show him what should have been important to him was not the birthmark on Georgiana's face, but the beauty that she possessed both inside and out that made him desire to spend the rest of his days with her. "…he failed to look beyond the shadowy scope of Time, and living once and for all in Eternity, to find the perfect Future in the present (Birthmark, 17);" therefore, he was forced to spend eternity without the one that truly loved himunconditionally. Henry V

Is Henry V an anti-war play?

You could refer in your answer to the Olivier and Branagh films and the contexts in which they were produced, as well as the context of the play's original composition.

At the time when Shakespeare wrote Henry V Queen Elizabeth was the country's monarch and the nation had just witnessed England defeat the Spanish Armada and become the world's strongest naval power. Therefore the 16th Century and original perception of the play is that it's celebrating England's supremacy in battle and shows this again by the production of Henry V and England's victory over the much stronger French. It's unifying the country through war and celebrating the country's pride. Henry V was also related to Elizabeth, so it's not only a celebration to the country but also to the Queen and her deceased relative.

Throughout the play there is a strong sense of patriotism, not only from Henry V and the battle that lies ahead and the fight for the country but more importantly and significantly the patriotism of the troops and their love for him. Part of this can be accounted for the some of the troops relationship with the then Prince Hal in Shakespeare's Henry IV. This makes their battle more personalised, they're not just fighting for the King of England but for the King of England who used to have a drink with them in their local pub. This means that for the play Shakespeare shows a sense of admiration and awe that the troops have for Henry as he was once one of them, and now he's standing side by side with them ready to fight the battle.

‘The Kings a bawcock, and a heart of gold,

A lad of life, an imp of fame;

Of parents good, of fist most valiant.

I kiss his dirty shoe, and from heartstring

I love the lovely bully

(Pistol IV.1 lines 44-48)

There is then of course great patriotism from Henry and in particular in many of his long speeches which take up one third of all the written text. Shakespeare's aim was to glorify Henry as in the shows first production there was Queen Elizabeth in the audience. Again after the defeat of the Spanish Armada the nation would have been in a very patriotic mood and this is expressed in the text by Shakespeare. Henry's speeches are most significant for the fact of him being able to rally his troops ready for battle; they're very complex in their nature and use numerous animal metaphors and rhetorical questions to get his intensity and passion for war over to the audience. Quite importantly Henry identifies with his troops, showing he is a man and not just a king and this identification with the troops gives the play a huge feel of self belief and patriotism.

‘We few, we happy few, we band of brothers

For he today that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother'

(Henry IV. lines 60-6)

In this particular speech Henry uses ‘we' three times, each time with it meaning more and it shows the brotherhood of war, that they're in this together, will fight together and die together. Henry is glorified through his speeches in particular by Shakespeare. This show of glory shows how the audience can interpret the play as a pro-war production with the King of England fighting along side his people for the good of his people. Shakespeare also evokes a great sense of honour from Henry and this is particularly important with how Henry's made his claim to the French throne through the Salic law. His fight for this and the fact that he truly believes his claim is just, and is willing to sacrifice his life for the cause shows emphatically that from this view point the production must be seen as a pro-war one. References to God also appear quite often, this emphasises that the cause for war is just and by using the Lord's name its how Henry believes he's fighting alongside him.

‘Follow your spirit and upon this charge

Cry, ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

There is also the only instance in the play where Henry is alone, and this is his Soliloquy when Henry's at his lowest ebb. (IV. 1 lines 18-77.) His prayer to God I feel can be interoperated in two ways. He asks for his help because he needs it, the French are stronger than him and this can be seen as a pro-war or anti-war message. Pro-war as he's asking God for help on the battle field and his men isn't as strong as the French. Or anti-war as he needs the help of God which could show that war isn't justified and he maybe doubting his claim and is looking to God for answers and if he wins the battle that will be the answer that God was on his side, but what's the price he'll have to pay?

Henry V has been adapted to the big screen on two occasions with each of these being different from the other, respectively. There was the Lawrence Olivier version produced as anti-Nazi propaganda which its effect was said to be ‘Stiffened our sinews, summoned up our blood and gave us the determination to bash Hitler'. It was used to raise the moral of troops is the Second World War by showing the strength of the English when faced in battle. The second production was directed by Kenneth Branagh and this had an anti-war message to it. Still fresh in peoples minds were both the Vietnam and Falklands war and Branagh went about showing how horrific war can be. Olivier left out completely the traitor's scene with Cambridge, Scroop and Grey as this was a particular anti-war message of mistrust and treachery by those very close to the king. Branagh tackles the situation in a very emotional style, with tears in his eyes and a great deal of sadness of what his close friend Scroop had done to him.

‘What shall I say to thee, Lord Scroop, thou cruel,

Ingrateful savage, and inhuman creature?

Thou that dids bear the key of all my councels,

That knews't the very bottom of my soul'

(Henry V II. lines 4-7)

This was further more shown in the Warwick Arts Centre production in which the audience could really feel the pain Henry was suffering when he confronted Scroop and it really gave the sense of the bitter side of war and how one can be betrayed through the greed of wealth.

The play by Shakespeare also portrays the gruesome side of war and this can be seen distinctly as an anti-war message. Over time the original interpretation of the play may have changed due to world events and the 1st Century's point of view may be that of anti-war. The scene at the siege of Harfleur (III.) portrays a very anti-war message with the manner of Henry's speech. ‘If your pure maidens fall into the hand/ Of hot and forcing violation? And, ‘Your naked infants spitted upon pikes/ Whiles the mad mothers with their howls confused'. This shows the darker side of Henry and is at the other end of the spectrum compared to his morale boosting Band of Brothers speech. This part of the speech is left out in the Olivier version but shown to its full effect in Branagh's screen play. It's very much an anti-war message as it shows the gruesomeness of war and what it can do to the innocent peoples involved. What I feel is a strong anti-war message is when the battle's over and the death toll is read to Henry. Where there are ten thousand French dead yet only twenty-five English dead. But with the French soldiers it's the amount of nobles that have died, including people that have appeared in the play like the High Constable of France. This leaves a bitter taste as it shows the price of war with so many men of high quality lying slain in the field. But it could be interoperated as pro-war for the English as not as many have died and only a few nobles, nothing compared to the numbers of French.

Finally when the play comes to the end there is the Epilogue which was wrote in the form of a sonnet and tells of what happened after the victory at Agincourt, which has a strong anti-war message to it. Henry V dies and he leaves it to his son, Henry VI, who then lost France through bad management of his estate.

‘Whose state so many had a managing

That they lost France, and made his England bleed'

The Epilogue I feel has an anti-war message to it because it shows how everything was lost after the soldiers and Henry's brave battles. It was what Henry believed in and he eventually lost his life to it only for it to be lost within months of his death.

So is Henry V an anti-war play, originally when Shakespeare wrote it but over time this perception has changed with different interpretations and ways to view it with different contexts in mind.

Is Richard III a study of how to structure a play, or is it a study of how to gain political power?

For different minds, Richard III could be percieved as a fine example of both how to structure a play and how to gain political power. Critics would probably be more intersted in the construction of Richard III than a person seeing the play for the first time. In my opinion, the configuration of Richard III is of equal importance as the plot.

Shakespeare uses several succesful devices in structuring the play, that make the audience feel like insiders. Dramatic irony, for example, allows the audience to know something that the other characters dont, to be in on the plan. Another of these is parralel scenes, where the audience sees events that are happening simultaneously, but to different people. This creates dramatic tension int the play.

Another device is dramatic irony, especially when Richard relates his plots to the audience. When Richard says

Dive thoughts, down to my soul. He lets the audience know what he is thinking, but means to keep his thoughts hidden from the other characters. These aside speeches and soliloquys are particularly fascinating because they are the only parts of the play when we see Richards true nature. The fact that Richard has to be very cautious as to whom he discloses his real nature is very important. Even Buckingham does not know Richards mind throughout the play. Richard only shows his true character to those who he feels pose no threat, and those who do see it, are usually disposed of soon afterwards. However, it should be most detrimental to his reputation should someone of importance to his plots see his character for what it really is.

The play is structured around several important themes. These are Richards ambitions, -his aspiration to the crown, irony, -how he decieves everybody and yet no-one suspectshim, fate, -Justice being done to Richard, good triumphing over evil, and morals, -that teach the audience a lesson about good and evil.

At regular intervals, Richard discloses his intentions to the audience in soliloquys. In the first scene, Richard reveals his plots to drive a wedge between his brothers, King Edward and Clarence, to play them off one another, then to have Clarence imprisoned and quietly murdered. Plots

to set my brother Clarence and the King in deadly hate the one against the other, and if King Edward be as true and just as I am sublte, false and treacherous, this day should Clarence be closely mewed up, about a prophesy which sais that G of Edwards heirs the murderer shall be.

This exemplifies to the audience Richards mercenary and remorseless nature, his willingness to kill anyone who interferes with his political pursual, regardless of his relationship with them.

Irony plays an important role in the play in many ways. For instance, dramatic irony, when the audience know something the other characters dont. Also when Richard drops hints of his villainy and plots to unsuspecting characters and when other characters oblivious words or actions prophesise outcomes, for example in Act Scene , Stanley tells Hastings of a dream he has had of Richard revealing his true nature, and endangering Hastings. Hastings dismisses this entirely and mocks Stanley for believing in dreams. He reassures Stanley wrongly of Richards kind and virtous disposition. This ties in with another theme fate, as Elizabethans were particularly intersted in the idea of interpreting dreams and omens.

Margaret, Hastings and the Duchess of York all prophesise Richards nemesis

Margaret Sin, death and hell have set their marks upon him.

Hastings I prophesy the fearfulst time to thee.

Duchess Bloody thou art, and bloody will be thy end, Shame serves thy life and doth thy death attend.

Fate also is an important theme of the play. The Medieval idea of the Wheel of Fortune that supposedly controlled ones fate suggests that Richards luck rose and fell in large fluctuations. It appeared to climax when Richard became King, but fell sharply almost as soon after he was crowned. The audience of the day would have identified with this, as Elizabethans were very superstitious.

Richards plight is supposedly parallel with the ancient Greek dramas. For example, the Greek tragedy of Phaedra, a young man who had an affair with his Fathers lover, and paid with his life as a consequence.

Though in my opinion, the fundamental, most crucial theme of the play is morality. Elizabethan people either were, or liked to appear very pious and devout, so plays with ethics or a moral lesson appealed to them.

Although Richards behaviour is scandalously immoral, the outcome is favourable to the audience of the day, because Richard is punished and good triumphs over evil. Richard certainly does not soften as the play progresses. He is willing to kill anyone who steps in the way of his political aspirations, including his own brother. He is willing to force his niece into an incestuous marriage with him, so as to secure his political gains.

The play appears to be of two halves. The first half, Acts One, Two and Three are focused on Richards success. The second half, Acts Four and Five, are centred around Richards plight. Richard seems to lose his power in the second half of the play, the audience see his weakness when people start to lie to him.

Elizabeth appears to aggree to woo her daughter for him, but secretly plans to get her daughter quickly married to Richmond

Shall I go and win my daughter to thy will? and

I go, write to me very shortly, and you shall understand from me her mind.

Stanley also lies to Richard about his loyalty

Most mighty sovereign, you have no cause to hold my friendship doubtful, I never was, nor never will be false.

Whereas once, Richard was able to command the devotion of his courtiers, he now feels that he has to blackmail Stanley with his nephews life, in order to keep Stanley loyal to him.

Not only is Richards downfall historically correct, but Shakespeare has enforced this with reccurring themes of right and wrong in the play. This seems so because Shakespeare knows this is what the audience wants to happen. However, it is true to say that Richard III is a biased play because

Elizabeth I was of the opposing Lancastiran family and Shakespeare embellished the truth to please her by diminishing Richards character, qualities and appearance. Although it has never been proven to be true, it is thought that Richard murdered his nephews. This was another point on which we cannot be sure of its testemony. His deformity in the play, was also not true to life.

I also believe thatRichard III is a study of how to gain political power.

The play closely narrates Richards ambitions and success in acquiring and maintaining his power. Richard appears to have a deep inferiority complex throughout the play. I think that this unprovoked bitterness stems from his deformity. Richard feels that his disfigured looks leave him unsuccessful in sexual exploits. He therefore states that

Since I cannot prove a lover, to entertain these fair and well spoken days, I am determined to prove a villain and hate the idle pleasures of these days.

Richards psychological acrimony is supported in his hatred towards the Woodville family, as he has no motive to justify his resentment.

Richard loses what little moral sense he has due to his political ambitions and is completely remorseless, unimpressed and almost amused by the way people are manouvered and manipulated by him...

Relenting fool, shallow changing woman. Richard mutters to himself after he thinks that he has successfully persuaded Elizabeth to woe her daughter for him. Richard knows exactly how to behave honourably and virtuously when trying to win peoples good favour.

For instance, in Act Three, Richard has to impress the Mayor with his piety, ironically because he masks his corruption and evil with unnervingly convincing performances.

In fact, throughout the play, Richard appears amiable and charming on the surface, concealing his true nature; a ruthless and bitter disposition completely devoid of feeling, though he is able to affect sentiments of sanctity and compassion when fooling others, which is unusual in a villain.

Richard, despite his deformities, is a proud character. Because he cares for no-one, he fears no-one. His arrogance dismisses Richmond as a threat, therefore Richanrd is defeated when he underestimates Richmonds strength. Fundimentally, Richards pride condemns him.

Although Richard appears to be composed 100% villain, he has some attractive qualities which would appeal to the audience; his humour, charm, wit, intellect and dramatic skills are all highly admirable. In terms of politics, I think that Richard would make a successful, clever King. His major flaw is that he would need to control his conceit. If he could overcome that, I think he would be able to easily outwit enemies with tactical ruthless actions.

However, he would probably be harsh and obstinate with his subjects as he is not compassionate, though his eloquent performances would prove successful in debating, persuading and in situations where he is required to behave diplomatically.

Though the construction and characterization of Richard III are of equal importance, I believe that the sequence of events has more initial impact on the audience. It is Richards success and eventual downfall that is of dominant interest in the play, but Richards intricate character is something to analyse on reflection.

A contemporary audience would find the play harder to perceive due to circumstances, such as the difference between the authority the monarchy had in Richard IIIs day, than today. Also, certain topics, such as witchcraft, have been provenand dismissed as irrational superstition.

However, an audience today would probably have a much more light hearted approach to the play because society today is much less restrained, where dysfunctional families and personalities are discussed a lot more freely and psychological disorders are researched treated and accepted today.

Though the different audiences over the years have different reactions to the play, the most common attitude towards Richard has stayed the same. Most viewers think that Richards ruin was a punishment for his wrongdoings.

Order your The Problem with Affirmative Action paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Affirmative action is a controversial subject. While some support the view by suggesting that it helps to level the playing field, the opposing view promotes that such programs are unfair. The point is that affirmative action is something that will not be settled just as the abortion dilemma will always have two sides. While the ideas behind affirmative action is perhaps ideal, it has dangerous implications that white males have experienced. Although affirmative action tries to level the playing field, it is not fair.

Affirmative action does not include the ever-changing face of the average American. No longer are people black or white. There is more and more intermarriage and in effect, offspring surface who cannot describe themselves as one race or another.

Also, most people go against the concept. Americans oppose racial preference in most every form, and have recommended this strongly in many opinion polls, some of these including a large number of African Americans. You would think that in a democracy, the popular vote would rule. This is also consistent with the utilitarian point of view. Central to Utilitarianism is the premise that it is ideal to achieve the greatest happiness for the greatest number (McLeish).

Another point is that affirmative action, while once important, is an obsolete concept. Things have changed. Affirmative action might have been necessary decades ago, but things are different now.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The Problem with Affirmative Action

Critics of affirmative action also claim that it results in reverse discrimination against white men who are passed over in favor black men who may not be as qualified. This is a common problem and perhaps the best case as to why affirmative action does lead to negative consequences. There have been numerous law suits filed in a variety of situations including the educational and business realms.

Although many minorities and women do support affirmative action strategies, a majority says its benefits are not worth the effects that go with it. This is a significant problem today. Many people look at minority doctors and lawyers and in the back of their minds wonder if they are really up to the job. The very bright minority member, who might have surpassed most others, is second guessed and therefore held back to an extent. An individual would be far better off with the governments mandates.

Finally, affirmative action programs create low self-esteem. The programs not only hurt the competitor who is not a minority member, but also those who are being helped. Affirmative Action is supported by individuals with good intentions, who realize that school systems around the nation are not equal. In order to help minorities who have come from poorer neighborhoods, programs to give them a push into college or a job are endorsed. While affirmative action is a good idea, the reality is that the programs do have more bad effects than positive features.

Which Brand of Paper Towel Works the Best?

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Description

I plan to test four different brands of paper towels to see which brand is the strongest and which brand absorbs liquid the best. The brands that I will use in my experiment are Amway, Bounty, Brawny, and Green Forest (a recycled paper towel.)

B. Why I chose this project

My parents bought a case of paper towels from some friends of theirs who are Amway distributors. My grandma kept complaining that those paper towels were very cheap and tore easily. My parents claim that all paper towels are about the same. I decided to see who was correct.

C. Hypothesis

I think that Brawny will outperform the other brands in both the strength and in the absorbency categories. I think this because it feels thicker than the others and they advertise that their "Thirsty O's" make them stronger and more absorbent.

II. METHODS AND MATERIALS

A. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION

How Paper towels are made

The process of making paper towels is the same way that all paper is made. Wood and other plant materials are ground up until they have separated into microscopic plant fibers. These fibers can come from brand new trees, sawmill scraps left over when larger trees are made into lumber, or from recycled fiber. When making paper towels, they typically use chemically pulped softwood fibers or recycled fibers. After the fibers are ground up, they are bleached white. The fibers are then pressed into thin sheets and dried out. Paper products can be recycled about five to seven times. After that, the fiber becomes too weak to become effective. When making two-ply paper towels, each ply is made separately and then combined using a process called embossing. This makes indentations on surface of paper towels and enables it to pick up more water.

How Paper Towels absorb water

There are two reasons why paper towels absorb water. The first is capillary action. Paper towels are loosely woven and have many spaces between the fibers. These spaces act like a sponge and trap the water. Water tends to travel up narrow channels even against gravity.

The second reason is that paper is made of cellulose. Cellulose is hydrophilic. This means it has the ability to become hydrated and, in fact, is attracted to water. The cellulose molecules can form weak bonds with water.

Researching Brands

In researching this project I went on to the Internet and read the ads for different brands of paper towels. Based on the advertising, I saw that paper towels are used for two main purposes. One purpose is to clean mirrors, glass, and counter tops. When paper towels are used for cleaning, strength is very important so that they do not tear while they are being used. The other main purpose of paper towels is to clean up spills. When paper towels are used for this, their absorbency is very important. In reading the various claims of paper towel manufacturers, each brand claims to be stronger and more absorbent than the competition. Each has reasons while they are they are better. Some focus on their strength, and their quilting or special designs. Some brands also stress how attractive they look. Several brands also claim that they absorb more quickly then the other brands. When paper towels are mainly used to clean up a spill, it is important that the paper towel can absorb a lot of liquid quickly so that less damage is done. In that case, absorbency is more important than the strength. I decided that for my experiment, I would test both strength and absorbency.

B. MATERIALS

v Paper towels Amway, Bounty, Brawny, Green Forest

v Scissors

v Water

v Medicine dropper

v Rubber band

v Glass bowl

v Pencil

v Paper

v Four rolls of quarters

v Ruler

v Large basin of room temperature water

v Stopwatch

v Two chairs

v Clothespins

v String

C. METHOD

For both the absorbency testing and the strength testing, I filled a basin with water and let it sit overnight so that it would be room temperature. I did this so that all of the water I used in testing would be the same temperature in case it made a difference. I selected three sheets of paper towel from each roll. I spaced them out at least 10 sheets apart in case there was any difference in how they were manufactured. I then began to cut each individual paper towel exactly to 5 x 7.5 cm. I did this because this was the smallest size of the paper towel and I didn't want one paper towel to be smaller because this might affect the outcome.

For the absorbency testing, I placed a sheet of paper towel on the top of a glass bowel and secured it with a rubber band. This would keep it from moving. I then filled my dropper with the room temperature water that was inside of the large basin. I held the dropper about 5cm from the paper towel. Then I dropped a drop of water onto the paper towel every two seconds to make this accurate. My mom watched to see when the first drop would fall as I counted the number of drops it took to leak through the towel. I repeated this experiment times for each brand of paper towel making sure to be as consistent as possible. I recorded my result with a pencil and paper and then I took the average of each brand of paper towel to determine which paper towel was the most absorbent.

For the strength testing, I tied two pieces of string between two chairs. The chairs were 60cm apart from each other and the string was 0cm apart. Then I took a paper towel and wet it with exactly 15ml of room temperature water. I made sure that the water completely moistened the paper towel. I attached the corners of the paper towel to the string with four clothespins. I then put quarters one at a time onto the center of the dampened paper towel. I counted how many quarters it took to finally break through the paper towel. I repeated this three times and recorded my results as well as the average number of quarters that it took to break through.

III. B. GRAPHS

IV. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS

Absorbency Testing

As far as absorbency, Bounty was the best paper towel. Out of three trials, it took an average of 18 drops of water before it finally leaked through. I was surprised to see that Green Forest came in second with an average of 170 drops. If a person is looking for a paper towel with good absorbency and also wants to protect the environment, then Green Forest is a good choice because it uses all recycled materials. I was surprised to see that Brawny came in third with an average of 77 drops. It is a lot less absorbent than Bounty or Green Forest. My grandma was right about Amway. It came in last with an average of 51 drops.

Strength Testing

Once again, Bounty came in first. It was the strongest paper towel as it took an average of 15 quarters to break through the paper. Brawny did much better in the strength testing. It took an average of 178 quarters before it broke through. However, Bounty is still quite a bit better. Amway was a lot weaker than the first two brands as it took an average of 15 quarters until breaking. The weakest paper towel was Green Forest. On average, it broke through after only 55 quarters. This is probably because it was recycled. When I was doing my research, it said that paper could be recycled five to seven times before it becomes too weak to be used again. If you plan on using a paper towel mainly for scrubbing and cleaning, then Green Forest is not a good choice.

In conclusion, my hypothesis was incorrect. Bounty was the best overall paper towel as it came in first in both tests. Even though Brawny advertises "thirsty O's", these were not very effective in absorbing water. This shows that you should not believe in everything that is advertised.

V. FUTURE PLANS

In the future, I would like to test other brands of paper towels to see how the measure up to my other observations. It might also be interesting to try different types of liquid to see if that makes a difference. I also might like to use colored water to see the absorption pattern.

Imperialism started in the latter part of the nineteenth century, which was triggered by the Industrial Revolution. Ever since the Industrial Revolution has started, competition among European countries has increased. In order to be the strongest among the rest of the countries, a nation had to be able to adapt to the new era and to be able to compete for survival, otherwise it was viewed as the weak and would eventually be defeated by the others. Mother countries such as Britain, France, and Germany began to develop new interests for the places which met their desires. Such desires included a dependable source for raw materials, and a large army to protect its possessions and the country itself. If all of these desires were met, higher standards of living could also be obtained, as well as prestige and the continuous prosperity of the mother country. Nations began to seek places which had a good geographical location and plenty of natural resources. Once they discovered these areas, they made them their colonies. By having colonies, a large army could be established to protect the mother country and its investments; raw materials could be transported from the colonies to the mother country and thus increased production. Imperialism benefited some aspects of the colonies, but was harmful in other aspects. Some colonies gained benefits such as better transportation as a result of new built roads and railways; better education for the people in the colony as schools were built; better shelters as new houses were built to replace mud huts (in the colonies in Africa in this case) (Mitchner & Tuffs. 17. P.17). However, not all the things that happened were beneficial. As a mother country came into power and took control of a colony, the colony could lose what she originally had, such as control over her own issues. After investigating the benefits gained and the harm done to the colonies, the evidence shows that the harm done due to imperialism outweighed the benefits. For example, as India became one of Britain's colonies, the lives of the Indians were in the hands of the British and they no longer had control over their own affairs (History of India, n.d.). Britain took advantages of India as much as possible and at all cost. People who lived in the colonies of Africa were forced to adapt to a new culture, thus losing their identity (History of Africa, n.d.). Therefore, imperialism was not beneficial to the colonies for the most part.

India was one of Britain's colonies. The main reason for having India as a colony was because it had the raw materials that Britain needed to help its industrial growth. The British law forced India to supply raw materials such as tea, indigo, coffee, and silk, they also forced India to change from growing wheat to growing cotton to help Britain's own economy (History of India, n.d.). As all the materials that Britain wanted were provided by India, profits were made mostly by the British and the Indian manufacturing was forced out of business. This shows the lack of consideration for the Indians on Britain's part. They did not care about the economy of India and they only cared about the economy of Britain. Everything that the British did was for the their own good and did not think of the consequences to their actions. Imperialism was not beneficial to the colonies when most of what they had to run the economy was taken away. It was bad enough that the British destroyed the local Indian businesses, but they also made the Indians pay taxes. Since the British had control over the Indian government, the people in India could not do anything to change their own taxation system. One third of India's annual revenue was spent in Britain for Britain's own benefit and the people in India had no choice but to stand aside and let it happen. As local businesses in India were out and the people in India were taxed at the same time, it was not surprising that food shortages started to occur in India, which caused the death of over 0 million Indians (History of India, n.d.). As a result of British imperialism, harmful things were done to the Indians. Not only did the British deprive the Indians from having control over their own government and local affairs, the British drained money from India and did whatever it took to benefit herself only. The British took advantage of the fact that the Indians were defenceless against them.

Although the British who settled in India made it seem like they were trying to improve the lives of all Indians by giving them the western civilization and providing education, not all of the people in India had the same privilege. In 181, only the Indian elites were taught how to read, which was only 10 percent of the total population, and the other 0 percent of the people remained as illiterates (History of India, n.d.). The result of imperialism was not as beneficial to the people in India as the British made it seem, in a way, they provided education to Indian elites in an attempt to make them have the same beliefs and values as the British, since those privileged Indians were most likely going to become leaders in the future. By providing education to these people, Britain could make eventually English become the dominant language in India, so that the multi-lingualism of the Indian culture would slowly fade away. The attempt to change culture did not only happen to the Indians, but to most colonies in Africa as well. After the Berlin Conference in 1885, most parts in Africa were claimed by Britain, France, and Germany, the people in the colonies also had to adapt to western's way of life even when they already had their own culture (History of Africa, n.d.). Imperialism caused the people in the colonies to lose their unique way of life. The construction done in Congo by Belgium is also an example that shows a mother country did certain things to benefit herself. Belgium built new railways and roads because they needed new routes to transported the raw materials taken from the colonies, such as gold, ivory, diamonds, etc, as efficiently as possible to increase the production and the number of trades that could be made (Mitchner & Tuffs. 17. P.185). Belgium made it seem like the constructions were done to make the conditions in the Congo better, but actually, they only benefited themselves as the new routes increased the amount of trade made, which helped Belgium's economy. Congo, however, did not benefit from the new form of transportation as she did not get a share of the wealth. It was Belgium who benefited from it.

Invading foreign countries was how imperialism worked, as this was the only way to colonize a place. Britain usually ended up getting the colony that she aimed for, which was a gain for her, but the process of seizing the colony was usually not pretty. An example would be Britain's invasion in Zululand in 1877 (Mitchner & Tuffs. 17. P.188). The Zulus had no choice but to fight the modern army of Britain when they invaded, and as a result of that, most of them were killed and their own nation was divided into occupied districts. This did not only happen to the Zulus, but to the Boers who died in the Boer War too. In the Boer War, the British troops were supported by the troops from Australia, Canada and other parts of the British Empire, thus they overpowered the Boers. Because of this war, over 7000 men and 8,000 innocent women and children died (Mitchner & Tuffs. 17. P.18-10). In the history of imperialism, some colonies were stripped of culture, others were stripped of materials and money, but nothing could be worse than being killed by the mother countries that invaded their land.

Buy cheap harm done to colonies due to imperialism term paper

In conclusion, imperialism was not beneficial to its colonies for the most part, although sometimes the mother countries made it appear otherwise. It seemed like new facilities such as new buildings and roads built to improve the living conditions in the colonies, but in reality, the mother countries were only attempting to benefit themselves so they could become wealthier. They also did things without considering what could happen to their colonies, such as taking materials from them and creating larger industries than the ones that the colonies have, which resulted the closures of the colonies' businesses. The culture of the people who originally lived in the colony has been invaded as imperialist nations took control and attempted to spread their western ideas. The result of that was the loss of identity for the people. Not only that, they were always being treated as second-class citizens in their own country due to the cultural differences between the mother country and the colonies. Worse of all, the innocents were killed in the process of claiming a colony.
