Social Obstacles

Music for social change is the outlook of transformation the common community. Through song lyrics, artists can convey on how they see the world. They are influencing the listeners to change the society, in a positive and constructive way, in order to better the society in which they live. Eliminating prejudices or reducing violence are common issues that are preached through songs pertaining to today's society. In the song "Changes", pac expresses the realization that the world has become an uneasy place to live. His messages need to start transforming the way we go about living life or it will take us down. "Waterfalls" by TLC also describes the life of young people who are being subjected to the streets. "Changes" and Waterfalls" have many positive points throughout the songs. Which give the idea of pursuing a better and more substantial way of life, by overcoming obstacles that stand in the way.

"Changes" shows the disadvantages of being a struggling African American in today's society. Pac goes on to express his opinion, "Im tired of bein poor & even worse Im black . . . Cops give a damn about a negro, pull the trigger kill a nigga hes a hero". The main message is that we need to start changing the way we treat each other in order to change where we can go in life as individuals and as a society. In these lyrics Pac tries to influence a positive outlook.

"Its time for us as a people to start makin some changes.

Lets change the way we eat, lets change the way we live

and lets change the way we treat each other.

You see the old way wasnt working so its on us to do what we gotta do, to survive".

Hostility and violence just leads to death and short triumph before someone else was dead or in jail. The friction between people in the same place leads to multitudes of failure. Working together, not against each other, is the change that will bring us together in order to rid the streets of violence and introduce success. The obstacle that we need to over come here is our vindictive actions against our inhabitants.

"Waterfalls" tells about the agony of a mother who knows that her son is involved in street crime, but has no power to stop him. The boy does not seem to appreciate his mother. TLC follows up with the result of a real life situation, "So he goes out and he makes his money the best way he knows how, yet ends up being, another body laying cold in the gutter. The listeners of this particular group commonly reside in such neighborhoods as depicted in the lyrics; it can spark an emotion and make the song one that they can never forget because they can relate to it on a day to day basis. Although it seems like the easy way to move up in the neighborhood is through crime, it is not only morally wrong but also dangerous. "Waterfalls" depicts the crucial life threatening realities of the street life. The hindrance in the boy's life is his relationships on the streets, not with his mother.

Getting the boy and its listeners on the right track is a strong premise that is being promoted for the duration of the song. TLC repeats throughout the song, "Dont go chasing waterfalls Please stick to the rivers and lakes that Youre used to." In this instance of the song the obstacle is not in the hands of the boy but the mother. She is doing all that she can to get into the boys head and show him that she is there for his benefit. It's his mom that has the answers, not the streets. The message trying to be portrayed is that the boy's mother should be more influential, and involved in her sons life.

In conclusion, everyday life may hand out all kinds of obstacles, both difficult and simple. It is up to us to know and choose the right or wrong of a situation. "Changes" and "Waterfalls" give relatively the same scenario of living in terms of our surroundings and everyday life. For instance, the songs go on to describe life on the streets, living the rough life of drugs, disease, hate and killing. "Changes" and Waterfall" are music for social change because they both are turning a negative situation into a positive. The songs influence people through the truth of its lyrics. The words in the songs can be looked at as societies push to wanting to achieve a better life.

"Affinity (Sexual Orientation) Discrimination There are no federal laws that cover sexual orientation discrimination at this time. However, under the Civil Service Reform Act of 178, employees may file a complaint with the Office of Special Counsel of the Merit System Protection Board if they are adversely affected by a prohibited personnel practice, such as discrimination based on political affiliation, marital status, sexual orientation, etc." (Dept. of Psychology, UOW).

- "Affinity Orientation Act A person attracted to those of his or her own gender. Affinity orientation is not a protected category under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Those who are terminated or not hired solely on the basis of affinity orientation have no claim for relief under that law. However, WI, CA, MA, HI, CT, NJ, MN, VT and over 15 municipalities have legislation extending employment protection and benefits to gays and lesbians." (Dept. of Psychology, UOW).

- There are no real laws affecting gays and lesbians in the workplace. However, with Sexual Affinity Orientation, employees can file complaints when they feel discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. As stated, they can file their complaints because of the Civil Service Reform Act of 178. Because there are no official laws set forth by the government, this act provides some security for homosexuals in the workplace.

- The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy affects military personnel. Under this policy, applicants are not asked about their sexual orientation and it prohibits the harassment of homosexual military personnel. However, "…homosexual conduct is grounds for discharge." (Dr. Osei Darkwa).

- The Anti-Defamation League "…is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry" (ADL, 001). They believe in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) legislation. This would provide legal protection to homosexuals in the workplace. They also believe

"…that employment decisions such as hiring, firing, promotion and compensation should be based on merit, performance, and ability and never on the basis of an individual's sexual orientation. No one should be dismissed from their job solely because of their sexual orientation.

Unfortunately, in the vast majority of states, it is not illegal to fire someone simply because that person is a gay man or a lesbian. Support for ENDA sends an important message to all Americans that sexual orientation discrimination will not be tolerated in the workplace" (ADL, 001).

I feel that homosexuals should not be discriminated against in the workplace. They are human beings just like everyone else. It should be nobody's business who they choose to sleep with. Nobody should be put in a position to feel uncomfortable about being themselves. Everyone has to work and support themselves and everyone is entitled to work in an environment that is comfortable and "safe". They should not feel threatened and should definitely not feel like they are different than everyone else. They should also be represented just like everyone else. There are laws to protect people from discrimination, and this should just be a stipulation to that law. Just as there are laws to protect discrimination on race, gender and age, sexual orientation should be added to that list. I think this is important because then everyone gets the same message which is no discrimination at all.

In my workplace, there are no homosexuals that I am aware of. I know that if there were, my co-workers and I would be completely comfortable and able to work side by side with the individual. Just because they might have a different sexual orientation that I do, it does not mean that they are any less competent to do the job that I do. Therefore, I believe that there should be more laws to protect homosexuals in the workplace. I think the government should do a better job of assuring liberty and justice

Order your wild swans paper at affordable prices! Wild Swans is one of those astonishing books where the accolades carried on the dust jacket - heart-rending, masterpiece, extraordinary, mesmerising and so on - are all absolutely true. All convey the incredible achievement of the author, Jung Chang, as she traces her family over three generations from the early 100s to the epilogue in the 10s.

We are taken into an increasingly insane and surreal world, as the dark heart of Chinas Cultural Revolution in the 160s is gradually laid bare. Oppression oozes from every page. The godlike Chairman Mao infiltrates every aspect of daily life, literally down to each thought - and even breath.

Even before we reach the Cultural Revolution - the term first appeared in the Chinese press in 165 - we are launched into a society of custom and tradition at once venerated, yet also the source of depredation and violence; a society, as Chang points out, in which justice is arbitrary and cruelty both institutionalised and capricious.

Within a few pages we are confronted with the practice of foot binding, for instance. Jung Changs beautiful grandmother had her feet bound when she was two. They were regarded as her greatest asset and were referred to as three-inch golden water lilies. Chang explains that this meant she walked like a tender young willow shoot in a spring breeze. In the society of the time

Write my Essay on wild swans for me

The sight of a woman teetering on bound feet was supposed to have an erotic effect on men, partly because her vulnerability induced a feeling of protectiveness in the onlooker.

The description of how the feet were bound is painful to read, yet sets the tone for much of what is to follow the cruelty, the oppression, the deprivations of a whole nation at the hands of a ruthless and calculating tyrant.

Changs account never descends into self-pity, however. In its level-headed and fiercely intelligent rendering, it takes us not simply into the heart of darkness, but also that of understanding.

We learn how, incredible though it may seem, peoples spirit can be crushed, how millions can be coerced into a life they have no control over and how, when your every word and action are being scrutinized, it becomes impossible to speak out.

Yet there is also an uplifting of the spirit, a resilience that ultimately manifests itself in the fact that the book has been written at all, and in the lives of those who survived against the grimmest odds.

The book arouses a complex mix of emotions and disbelief, exposing not only a cultural aberration of the recent past, but also placing our own society and what we take for granted in a new light.

Yet, all the time, it reads like an incredible adventure story. Its lucid writing holds our attention from the outset. Once youve started, you simply have to read on to the end of the 700 or so pages.

American's fright to live in peace despite the fact that their environment is being destroyed from pollution. Time will only tell if the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment will be called pollution or criminal acts. Many problems develop from pollution ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. Society continues to tolerate pollution, and living in a world of filth. It is all among us and but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? Ignoring the problem that pollution creates from automobiles, post-consumer market, and industry waste is not the answer.

Automobiles are undeniable the greatest source of pollution. The noise pollution created by cars is immense. Another polluting effect of cars is the heat they create. This heat makes it unpleasant to be near the car while it is running. Beyond this, the most famous of the automobiles evils is the exhaust. Toxic fumes given off as a byproduct of the combustion engine are slowly deteriorating a persons lungs and one's atmosphere. Since exhaust is extremely toxic to human beings, why continue to drive these walking time bombs? Some people will say it is progress, but the majority drives automobiles for convenience. Why walk to the store for groceries four miles away in four hours, when one can drive the same miles in four minutes?

Another popular source of waste is the post-consumer market. American citizens throw away millions of tons of garbage each year, and this trash has to go somewhere. While there are projects underway to clean and reuse this refuse most of it gets dumped into huge landfills.

These landfills are disgusting festering blisters on our countrys landscape. People continue to consume and throw away more and more in the name of convenience. As they see it, when things get old, throw the old away and get new ones. People blame the government for the trash problem, but the truth blame should be placed on each individual. Supply and demand of these products generate more and more factory byproducts called "waste."

Contaminating one's environment by dumping industry waste into the Earth's soil, streams, lakes, rivers, and oceans is leading to its demise. This may seem like a relatively small occurrence that is really not one of anyone's concern, but that's why the human race is wrong. Each time one of these companies pollutes; there are horrible consequences to pay. Mutations, destroyed ecosystems, and human death have all occurred as a direct result of illegal dumping. Pouring industry waste into the soil causes the soil to be contaminated along with the drinking water. Stopping to think about this causes one to think, where is humanities food grown and how it is watered? It causes entire communities of humans (not to mention animals) to move to new places not to return for at least a century. Poisons dumped by industry are so concentrated that a single barrel can destroy an entire lakes ecosystem. Killing any lakes plant life, small bacteria, and other microorganisms starts a chain reaction with the lakes ecosystem, causing loss of food for fish, which means the ecosystem dies.

Pollution, like any other problem, can be solved, but this is a long process. Individuals can do their part to save the environment as well as themselves. Instead of driving, create a carpool or any method of mass transit. Decreasing pollution made by cars each year will add years to a person's life. When it comes to the trash problem, take the time to sort your trash and

place it in the appropriate recycling bins. Recycling our products reduces the amount of waste piled onto mankind's landfills. As for consumption, pay attention to how the products are manufactured and packaged. Avoid those products made in unfriendly ways towards our mother earth. Buy another product if it encourages the destruction of land, or is of completely no use do not buy it. Voicing one's opinion at the polls counts, not ever politician is equal concerning the environment. Saving the world from pollution, one step at a time, is as easy as doing one's part creating a better life for children yet to be born.

Since the fifties, television has become a major aspect in most Americans lives. Today there is cable, digital cable, and satellite. Brand names include Sony, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, and Sanyo. Television programs vary from game shows to reality T.V., from sitcoms to soap operas, all of which get their fair share of watchers. Although many would argue that T.V. rots influential minds and shortens attention spans, it inarguably has its positive elements.

Americans not only have the right, but the need to know whats happening in their society, and the fastest means is through television. Especially during a war, knowledge is in high demand. T.V. has made is possible for awareness about top criminals lurking the country through shows like Americas Most Wanted. Humans feel it necessary to know everything, and due to impatience, as fast as humanly possible, T.V. enables that to happen.

Capitalism, the true axis behind our country is fueled by commerce. In order to make the wheel of economy go round, purchases need to be made. People are inspired to make purchases through the art of commercials, Commercials inform Americans about things they never knew about but couldnt live without. The U.S. thrives on Darwins theory of survival of the fittest, where the weak get crushed and the monopolies become more powerful. This is made possible through the ability to advertise, especially on T.V. Its one million dollars per thirty seconds of airtime during the super bowl. That sum is gladly paid by giants of the telemarketing world. It may seem like fierce competition, but America is the most powerful country in the world for some reason, and it seems to work.

Lytton High School's 001 Shakespeare in Schools production.

The women's drama team at Lytton High School is this year performing a compilation of scenes from the Scottish play Macbeth .The setting is the 180's and the focal point is women and their power. Lady Macbeth is a power hungry feminist of the 180's, intent to unrid herself of all feminity to gain power and control. The witches, businesswomen with a mission, are determined to play with her vaulting ambition.

It is inevitable that with such a theme, lines have been borrowed from male characters and given where appropriate to the female counterpart. This has three intended purposes. Firstly to emphasise the central role women played in influencing the action in Macbeth. Secondly to highlight the marginalisation of women and the text they receive in the play. Lady Macbeth and the witches also speak their traditional allocated lines. However these lines are given at the end in a social context. The lines are making a statement that to be women and to want power can only end in madness, or alternatively can only be expressed through the supernatural.

The performance takes the audience through 4 short scenes. Initially, Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a formidable figure determined and focused. The witches begin as a backseat to Lady Macbeth, although an omnipresence on stage. As the performance develops so do the witches, their uprising is parallel with Lady Macbeth's demise. In the end the witches reign supreme and Lady Macbeth goes mad.

The audience is left with the impression that to be powerful women in this play (and therefore Shakespearean time) you must be derived from the supernatural. Lady Macbeth is an illustration of ambition gone mad, a lesson to be learnt for women who challenge existing structures and hunt for the power of a man. This lesson is a slap in the face for women and Lytton High School's performance is hoping to leave the audience not only entertained, but also thinking about these issues.

Eighteenth century and modern day poetry, while remaining independent in their own right, address similar issues relating to the loss of childhood innocence. In both eras, the magnitude and severity maybe experessed differently with respect to the issues concerning violence, safety, and spirituality. Dudly Randall in his 16 poem Ballad of Birmingham touches on the irony of the impetuous burdened mother trying to protect her child from the viciousness of the beast when, in fact, she sent her unkinowingly straight into the lions den. However, the message by William Black in his 178 poem Chimney Sweeper showa a parents more uncaring in nature. IN this polished work, the parent realizes the idea of death is distained but not devasting, whereas death is uncertain in Ballad of Birmingham.

R. Baxter Miller in his work of modern Americhan Poetry said thus, there is no sanctuary in an evil world...and one may face horror in the street as well as in the church. This statement best describes the relative impact of modern poetry like Ballad of Birmingham and 18th century poetry like Chimney Sweeper because the outcome in both is not the control of the child. Both poems give the reader a deeper look into the loss pf purity of children. All inadvertently touching the world upon their death. In the Ballad of Birmingham a young girl expresses to her mom the impact she wants to have on the civil rights movement. The Chimney Sweeper tells the story of a yount boy that faces the option of death every das as he labors in soot.

Randall offera a conversational tone in Ballad of Birmingam between a mother and a daughter. The girl attempting to convince her mother to allow her to walk in a march for the civil rights movement But mother, I wont be alone. Other childern will be with me and march the streets of Birmingham to make our country free And the imagery of a mother horrified becauade she lovingly trying to save her child from harm by sending her to church For when she heard the explosion, Her eyes grew wet and wild, She raced through the streets of Birmingham calling for her child. James Sullivan during his research of Randall conveys his belief of this poem being recovgnized as (using) the conventions of the traditional broadside ballad for contemporary polictical goals. This is important because it initated a literary revolt of Black Poems.

Like Dudley Randall, William Blake in Chimney Sweeper used rhyming stanzas and a coversational tone. He also uses reference to GBod as a saftey net. For example, as the young daughter was sent to church to sing in the choir as a precaustion, one of these young boys used a dream of God and His angels as motivation to continue in this death defying occupation. He explicitly shows the fear of children durning the late 1700s because of the risk they take every day cleaning the chimneys of all that request them in order to be the breadwinners of their families. The lack of parental concern for the safety of these young boys compels them to rely on their spirituality for comfor. Blake communicated this fear and distain as he discussed his young friends that were killed in the line of duty. The reader is left with the illustration of ...thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, and Jack, were all of them locked up in coffins of black. The image of tiny little boys dead due to the adult need of spotlessness is haunting.

It is becuase of thisy type literature that changes were able to be made benefiting the ones that were involved and powerless to vote. The young girl along with her three friends because martyrs to the Black community and gave them even more commitment to the civil rights movement. The duty allocation for which young boys sacrificed their childhoods in an effort to support their families was reformed and rebuked.

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $0.00 bill. In the room of 00, he asked, Who would like this $0 bill? Hands started going up. He said, I am going to give this $0 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple the $0 dollar bill up.

He then asked, Who still wants it? Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, What if I do this? And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. Now, who still wants it? Still the hands went into the air. My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $0. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE. You are special - Dont EVER forget it..

A common theme of attraction and repulsion between different individuals was common to many of the stories that we read. In "I Want to Know Why" these feelings occur between the narrator and a man by the name of Jerry Tillford. The narrator forms a sort of fatherly bond with Jerry. In "Ligeia" these feelings of attraction and repulsion are felt by the narrator as well, although the feelings are focused on his wife. Although these stories are drastically different they have the same underlying theme.

The narrator in "I Want to Know Why" has throughout his life lacked a true father. His father is a lawyer and seems to pay little or no attention to him. His father lacks interest in things his son does and even lacks disciplining him. When the narrator stole his fathers' cigar and ate half of it he didn't get punished. The narrator says, "when I told what I had done and why most fathers would have whipped me but mine didn't"(Anderson, 1). Due to the fact that the narrator felt he didn't have a father who cared about him he looked elsewhere for a role model. On the narrator's trip to the races when he was fourteen years old he realized he admired Jerry Tillford. The narrator says, "I liked him that afternoon even more than I ever liked my own father"(Anderson, 4). The narrator soon became attracted to Jerry and began seeing him as more than a fatherly figure. The narrator writes, "I wanted to be as near Jerry as I could. I felt close to him"(Anderson, 5). However, the repulsion enters this equation the minute the narrator saw Jerry go into the whorehouse. He couldn't understand why or how Jerry could do something as horrific as that. He idolized Jerry, but from that point on his feelings changed. He states, "all of a sudden, I began to hate that man. I wanted to scream and rush in the room and kill him"(Anderson, 6). The narrator had been let down once again.

In "Ligeia" the attraction and repulsion happens constantly in cycles. The narrator has very little recollection of the details of how he met Ligeia. However, the first act of repulsion apparent to me was when he stated, "I believe that I met her first and most frequently in some large, old decaying city near the Rhine" (Poe, 87). This shows that his recollection of her is not just good things, as shown by the old decaying city. This is imagery foretelling of the doom that will befall Lady Ligeia. Conversely, almost always when the narrator describes Ligeia he remembers her beauty and how he is attracted to her. He states, "in beauty of her face no maiden ever equalled her"(Poe, 88). He often idolizes her and puts her on a pedestal, above everything else. Another example of repulsion is when the narrator begins describing Ligeia, beginning with her forehead moving down her face. He then ends his description discussing her eyes. This effort by the narrator to be so meticulous about her description leads one to believe that she is in a morgue, lying dead. In many instances Ligeia both attracted and repulsed the narrator as shown by the statement, "…those eyes which at once so delighted and appalled me…"(Poe, 1). The same cycle of attraction and repulsion was shown again with his new wife, Lady Rowena. After reading the story, one realizes that the narrator has killed all of his previous wives, including Lady Ligeia and Lady Rowena, and is in a never-ending cycle of attraction and repulsion. Today, the narrator would be considered a serial killer and be classified as having some sort of mental disorder.

In both these stories there is an obvious example of attraction and repulsion, but in the case of "I Want To Know Why," there is only one cycle shown in the story. This fact is untrue in "Ligeia." In the story of "Ligeia" there is an almost constant repetition of the cycle of attraction and repulsion. The narrator appears to be in constant torment about his feelings, and in "I Want To Know Why" the narrator came to the almost immediate decision that he now hated Jerry. There was no prolonged torment involved in the case of Jerry. However, in "Ligeia" the torment came in a recurring pattern. Either way, the stories are linked by their displays of examples of attraction and repulsion. Despite the different ways in which these examples are displayed, these stories go hand in hand.

Order your Hitler- Friend or Foe? paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Hilter a name that was known to the world during one of the earlier centuries. Some of them saw him as a powerful and capable leader, the father of Germany while some thought that Hitler was a ruthless and the greatest enemy of world peace. What do you think?

Hitler is a ruthless, cruel leader. Being a German, he did done his part to make Germany become strong again, bringing his people out of the suffering. He was able to aid Germany when the incapable government was unable to, he made Germany rose to power again. However, it was a great cost to pay for the world, for all he thought was only the welfare of the Germany only.

For a little background, Hitler was from a small party before he even came to power in Germany. He was managed to climb his way up from a small party to who he was at that time the leader of the Germany. From there, he made himself known to the world; he made his small party to become the largest party in German parliament. How did he come about doing all these? Ruthless is the word that is most suitable to describe what he had done.

The Germans gave him their support in hoped for a better living environment, with a strong government to solve Germany's economic problems. Even though he had gained some popularity in Germany and had become a Chancellor, he was still greed for power. He made sure that he had complete power in Germany. In order to have the complete power, he set up traps to stir up the parliament in Germany so as to take away the rights of the Germans. When dealing with his opposition, he killed them mercilessly. He did every evil thing just for himself, to gain complete power.

Do my essay on Hitler- Friend or Foe? CHEAP ! When Germany had finally become strong again, he was not satisfied. He broke the agreements in the Treaty of Versailles; he built his own army and laid the foundations to the World War Two. This deadly war had taken many innocent lives, leaving the people around the war to suffer. They were either killed or being starves to death. People lived in fear during the days of the war. All these sufferings would have been avoided if Hitler would have been more forgiving and forget about the revenges to the other countries. He was selfish and was always thinking of gain advantages for himself only.

Hitler may seem to be a powerful leader. However, behind all his leadership qualities, he was a terrible man and was listed as one of the most evil men in the world for all the sufferings he had given to the world. Indeed, without Hitler, there will be peace and World War Two might not even have happened. So if you would to ask me, is Hitler a friend or a foe to you and me? It definitely got to be a firm NO.

Mrs Tilschers Class-A summary

Subject matter

• The poet is remembering a year in primary school when she was in the class of a teacher called Mrs Tilscher.

• She remembers a particular lesson (Geography) and a typical breaktime.

Help with essay on Mrs Tilschers Class by Carol Ann Duffey-A summary

• She preferred school to home because of the magic of enthralling books, sugar paper and coloured shapes which helped her to forget her fears of Brady and Hindley (the Moors Murderers who killed a number of children in the 160s).

• She describes details of other lessons and playtimes, especially one day when a rough boy told her the facts of life.

• At the end of the school year, when asked about how you were born, Mrs Tilscher didnt let on, but there is a sense of growing excitement with the coming thunderstorm

Language

Re-read the poem and examine the language carefully. What effects is the poet hoping to produce?

• She includes details to set the scene and help us imagine the classroom - chalky Pyramids (on the blackboard) / A window opened with a long pole.

• She uses similes and metaphors. Find some examples in the poem and explain why they are effective. Here are some ideas

• The classroom glowed like a sweet shop. This emphasises how special the classroom was to a child, since a sweet shop is a place full of treats and surprises for children.

• Brady and Hindley faded, like...a mistake. She uses a typical classroom image of rubbing out a mistake in your work to show how Mrs Tilscher helped the children erase their fears.

• Inky tadpoles. This description is very visual and helps us see the blots and dashes as the children learnt to use ink pens.

• The poet appeals to our senses to help us experience the classroom more fully

• There are vivid descriptions, as if the poets memory is like a photograph, so we can see the childrens fingers travelling up the Blue Nile.

• There are many sounds mentioned, so we can hear the classroom as well as see it. Mrs Tilscher chanted. The laugh of a bell.A xylophones nonsense

• We can also smell the classroom air - The scent of a pencil...- and almost taste the electricity of the end of term and feeluntidy, hot, fractious

Sound

The poet seems to be confiding in us and talks to us directly, so the poem sounds a bit like the patterns of everyday speech. The length of sentences is very varied. Look at some examples of one or two word statements Ethiopia. Khartoum. Coloured shapes. Compare them to longer sentences Three frogs / hopped in the playground... Can you explain this contrast?

Form

The first two stanzas are very innocent, the laugh of a bell swung by a running child, while the third and fourth are about gaining experience - the inky tadpoles changed...the heavy, sexy sky. Why do you think that the first two are made up of eight lines each and the third and fourth are made up of seven lines each? Do the shorter stanzas add slight tension?

Each stanza moves us through the school year, so the poem ends at the end of the summer term.

Ideas and attitudes

Now that you have read the poem carefully, consider what the poet wanted us to appreciate about her being in Mrs Tilschers class. Here are some ideas

• She obviously felt very safe and secure and happy in Mrs Tilschers class.

• She emphasises how Mrs Tilscher was ordered and organised.

• She values the things that Mrs Tilscher taught her (about the Blue Nile and commas and exclamation marks).

• She also values the things that she learnt during that year but were not specifically taught - she grew up a lot in that year.

Tone

What do you think are the poets feelings for her teacher and that year of her school life?

• She speaks very affectionately of Mrs Tilscher, emphasising all the personal touches that made her special - shed left a good gold star by your name.

• She also loved the special atmosphere in Mrs Tilschers classroom.

• She is grateful for all that she learnt and discovered.

• She generates excitement as she remembers the start of her adolescence.

There are many types of plastics. For example

Name Used for

Polythene Plastic bags and bottles, dustbins, ecling filmf

Cheap University Papers on Uses of plastics

Polystyrene Plastic cups, fats-food cartons, packaging foam

Nylon Rope, bristle for brushes, tights, carpet

Melamine eUnbreakablef dishes and mugs, ashtrays

Urea-formaldehyde Electric plugs and switches

Phenol-formaldehyde Door handles, saucepan handles

Plastics have these properties

1) They are all carbon compounds.

) Their molecules are long chains of atoms, made by joining lots of small molecules together. So they are called polymers. Poly means many. They are produced by a reaction called polymerization.

) Because they are molecular compounds, they do not conduct electricity. They are electrical and thermal insulators.

4) They are unreactive. Most are not affected by water, or oxygen, or other chemicals, which makes them very useful. But it also means they are difficult to dispose of. Unlike wood or paper, they do not rot away. (But biodegradable plastics will rot away.)

5) Some catch fire easily. When they burn, they may give out harmful gases. For example, PVC gives out choking fumes of hydrogen chloride when it burns.

6) Plastics contain mainly carbon and hydrogen atoms, which are light. So plastics are also light. But they are also strong because their molecules are so long. The longer the molecules, the larger the force of attraction between them.

(As you will see on the next page, the molecules in some plastics are cross-linked, which makes them even stronger.)

The Relationship of Othello and Desdemona

The relationship between Othello and Desdemona is one typical to the times. It is a relationship of power. Othello has complete and total control over Desdemona, which is why Othello becomes so enraged when he learns of Desdemona's infidelity. Othello is used to being in power and when an action was taken on behalf of Desdemona without his consultation and in his worst interest he lashed out.

As a General, Othello had command over many men, horses and townsfolk. He was the one who barked the orders and created the plans. Nothing was done without his approval and if it were, then the most extreme consequences were carried out.

Desdemona eloped with Othello because in her eyes he was the most perfect man. He was wise and noble. He was not only the physical but mental essence of a man. Othello saw Desdemona as the woman with esteemed feminine grace. They fell in love with each other based on the differences that

they perceive in one another. To Othello a woman is someone who succumbs to his every beck and call and does not resist power or his authority. Desdemona with her naïve nature is only willing to comply. Iago who cannot stand to see these two people so well in tune with each other devises a plan to ruin that relationship.

Being a General when Othello was told of Desdemona's infidelity by Iago it was treason. He treated Desdemona as one of his troops. She was his wife, he was in charge of her, how dare she betray and commit treason against him and all that he stand for. More so how dare she show such disregard for his stature and position in society?

This is why Othello could not and for that matter would not show Desdemona any sympathy or forgiveness. He had to maintain his General status and demeanor. If he allowed just one person to betray him, then mutiny would occur.

The relationship between Othello and Desdemona is quite reflective of the emphasis put on women to be their man's property from birth until death. "O heaven! How got she out? O treason of the blood" (Brabantio, I.i.185) A daughter was the fathers property until marriage. "Sweet soul, take heed, Take heed of perjury; thou art on thy

deathbed." (Othello V.ii.60) From her birth and upbringing and later to her marriage and death, her father and husband controlled Desdemona. This woman was controlled by men her entire life, and suffered the consequence of not being able to be believed.

Each of the two men controlling her life accused her of treason. She disobeyed them and gave up her respect. To Othello the General and her father the Senator, treason was the worst possible crime committable. Her father gave up all communication and rights to his daughter, and Othello killed her.

The relationships in Desdemona's life were all about control and power. Both her father and Othello dominated her every movement and those that they didn't control were acts of treason.

"My mother had a maid called Barbary,

She was in love; and he she loved proved mad

And did forsake her. She had a song of "Willow."

An old thing ‘twas; but it expressed her fortune,

And she died singing it. That song tonight

Will not go from my mind. I have much to do

But to go hang my head all at one side

And sing it like poor Barbary."

Adams 4

(Desdemona, IV.iii.-4)

Desdemona tells a similar story of a maid whose love deserted her and the sad song she used to sing. At this time her naïvet nature shows when she asks if there are women who betray their husbands. Desdemona remains innocent with her only desire to comply with the men in her life.

Othello and his power are what does not save Desdemona. As he kills her he weeps, and his pain and love become more apparent as he learns the truth. His last words before his death show that true love and passion remained under the General exterior. " I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this Killing myself, to die upon a kiss." (Othello, V.ii.41)

I honestly feel that Othello loved Desdemona with all his heart but bound by the laws and emotions of a General and the society which he was involved in, forced him to kill her as consequence for her actions. Their relationship was one of love and passion second to power and control.

A Life Changing Event

One year ago this week was the worst event that has ever taken place in my life. I wrecked the car I had put five years of hard work into. This event changed my life for the better in a rough way. The crash caused the car to flip seven times at 85 mph and in the process it threw me from the car. After the crash I have realized my place in this world. I couldn't live my life based on materialistic things.

On October 1, 00, I had just gotten my 16 Chevelle back from the transmission shop after building the new motor for the car. I had saved for over a year to install the new drive-train in it. The sole purpose of the new motor was race only. Early on in the afternoon I fueled up and washed it at the car wash. It was there when I met up with a friend of mine who wanted to ride in the car with the new motor. So I took him to his house to show his parents my cool ride. There I showed off my most prized possession off to my friends parents. Then I proceeded to take him back to his car. It was then when I was showing out for him and an older lady pulled out as I sped down the narrow road. I lost control and the car rolled over seven times before flinging me and him both out of the vehicle.

Due to the severity of my injuries, I had to be hauled in the back of a pick up truck to the emergency room. It took 150 staples to close the open wound on my head. Luckily my friend sustained no injuries. The wreck was painful but what hurt more was the fact the my friend didn't come see me in the hospital. He and I haven't spoken since the accident. On the other hand, numerous amounts of other close friends went to the hospital that night and waited until the could come see me after I was in stable condition.

I had to deal with numerous amounts of personal dilemmas in my life after that day. The car was everything that I had lived for, for so long. I worked on it for five years of my life. Suddenly, I lost it and a good friend too. My dad despised me for wrecking my car and wouldn't help me purchase another. I was enrolled at BSCC, and yet I couldn't finish my semester up. My life went from almost completely perfect to almost completely ruined.

I had lost everything precious to me yet I had everything to gain. I was at a stage in life where I had to make the decision to quit playing and start working. I had a future to think about instead of a car. The wreck almost killed me, but it gave me a new life. It was time to give up the materialistic aspect of my life and concentrate on getting a fulfilling education.

"Capitalism and Gay Identity," John D'Emilio

Gays and lesbians have become increasingly accepted by society. There are many more gay communities, facilities, and organizations than ever before and the number is rising. When did gay activity evolve into a lifestyle? John D'Emilio pondered this very question when he formulated his essay, "Capitalism and Gay Identity." D'Emilio argues that the development of capitalism, and its free labor system, has allowed gays and lesbians to create a "homosexual identity" (), opposing the belief that this identity has always existed for them. D'Emilio makes his points clear and convincing, although he omits many other factors that led to this revolution. The reader can then argue that although capitalism is one of the factors delineating a gay identity, others are overlooked in D'Emilio's attempt to make a clear correlation between capitalism and gay identity.

D'Emilio makes a clear distinction between homosexual behavior and gay identity. He admits that there have always been homosexuals, but the identity he speaks of comes from a society that allows them to exist. He points out that in colonial years, society lacked the terms to even acknowledge homosexuals. They referred to this activity as "sodomy among men" () and "lewdness among women" (). In certain states, laws forced unmarried adults to live in "family units" () and they were unable to make a way of life through their attractions.

Moreover, D'Emilio goes on to say that capitalism was the cause of gay identity through the breakdown of both the family's monetary independence and its interdependence on each other. Before capitalism, families were able to support themselves by their own means. As D'Emilio puts it "…husbands, wives, and children worked together to produce the goods they consumed"(8). They could rely on themselves to be self-sufficient so long as they had a family. In this way, sex was a means of procreating.

Custom Essays on Capitalism and Gay Identity

With technological advances and free labor, individuals were forced out of their current lifestyles, and into the work force. People were therefore more able to make same sex relationships with people in the workplace, encouraging gay activity to progress into an everyday life, rather than an unspoken activity. Family units were no longer necessary for survival, and people had the option of being single for the first time. Slowly but surely, the role of sex in people's lives began to change. Relationships turned away from the need to procreate and "became a means of establishing intimacy, promoting happiness, and experiencing pleasure" (). Although it had always been a pleasurable experience, the main concern was having children. This was no longer the case. People could have sex for only the enjoyment they obtained. In this way, people were encouraged to find mates who enjoyed the same things as them. D'Emilio reasons that this supported those who were gay to express it, and gave them an outlet to form a life in society. It gradually became more acceptable to have a mate of the same sex.

However, D'Emilio's insinuation that capitalism was the only cause of the breakdown of family life, and his presumption that this breakdown was the sole reason for homosexual existence in society is inaccurate. He makes many claims that seem absurd to the reader. For example, he claims that "college educated white women…could survive more easily without intimate relationships with men" (1). He gives no recognition to any other factors that may have been involved. Just because these women may be more able to support themselves, they become lesbians? Why does D'Emilio single out white women? In another example, D'Emilio claims World War II "freed men and women from the setting where heterosexuality was normally imposed" (1). How can a war account for all gays and lesbians coming out? This seems to be a flimsy argument at best.

As one can easily see, capitalism did influence the societal changes that account for today's gay identity, but it was not the only factor in this transformation. Progression from all aspects of life is the true motivator of social change. As D'Emilio says, gay identity is "a product of history"(7), but no one segment can fully explain its formation or its solidity. Gays and lesbians can now coexist with society, and find their role in it, based on this newfound identity.

Response Paper #5

Write my Essay on Frankenstein for me While at the university in Ingolstadt Victor Frankenstein became consumed with the desire of discovering the secret of life. During Victors quest for and the eventual discovery of the secret of life he undergoes many physical and psychological changes.

After becoming intrigued with the idea of creating life, Victor began searching for the secret to the re-animation of lifeless body parts. At first Victors research was fluctuating and uncertain (5). As Victor continued his quest he became so eager that the stars often disappeared in the light of the morning (5), while he was searching for his answer. While engaged in his research Victor stumbles upon the secret of creating life.

After Victor discovers the secret, he begins the process of creating a life by gathering limbs and body parts. After realizing the complexity of working with small body parts Victor resolves to make the creature stand eight feet tall and proportionally wide. At this point Victor began to feel god-like and wanted the creature that he created to bless me as its creator and source ().

Victor began his search for the necessary body parts by searching dissecting rooms and butcher houses. During this time, Victor began to experience moments of guilt but would suppress them with the eagerness of seeing the results of his work. While Victor arduously dedicated himself to his task he began to isolate himself from his family, friends and all other aspects of his life. Victor became so enamored with his goal that he lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit (). Physically, Victor became pale and emaciated due to his isolation ().

Later, after learning that the monster was responsible for the murder of his brother and sees Justine executed for the crime Victor becomes even more withdrawn and guilt ridden. This pattern of his waning physical health in relation to the monster is a result of the secret guilt that he endured. By killing his brother and causing him to become isolated, the monster is able to make Victor experience the isolation that he has endured since his creation.

Frankenstein takes a different view of the scientific progress of the Enlightenment. While the Enlightenment thinkers of the time were excited and optimistic about what was being discovered, Shelley forces them to take a look at the negative aspects of the unchecked pursuit of knowledge. Although Victor was successful in creating a life that creation was eventually responsible for the deaths of two of the people that were the most important to him.

This idea of the danger of wanton pursuit of knowledge is again demonstrated later in the book after Victor meets Robert Walton. Waltons goal is to surpass previous human accomplishment and reach the North Pole. Walton eventually considers Victors story and gives up on his goal of reaching the North Pole.

Experiences and Emotions in The Things They Carried Three Works Cited Tim OBriens The Things They Carried is not a novel about the Vietnam War. "It is a story about the soldiers and their experiences and emotions that are brought about from the war" (King 18). OBrien makes several statements about war through these dynamic characters. He shows the violent nature of soldiers under the pressures of war, he makes an effective antiwar statement, and he comments on the reversal of a social deviation into the norm. By skillfully employing the stylistic technique of specific, conscious detail selection and utilizing connotative diction, OBrien thoroughly and convincingly makes each point. The violent nature that the soldiers acquired during their tour in Vietnam is one of OBriens predominant themes in his novel. By consciously selecting very descriptive details that reveal the d...

The Heroes of The Things They Carried Eight Works Cited The word hero is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someones life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim OBriens novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraw...

Multicutural education has been a growing debate within school systems for many years. This has been a problem because their are so many students with diverse backgrounds are coming to school expecting to see some of their own culture being brought in the curriculum. The debate is that when students of different cultures come to school and do not relate well with the traditional curriculum they don’t do well in that school. They end up being called â€culturally disadvantage”. When middle class white students are not doing well, it is often thought that there is a problem with the teaching method. This problem undermines the confidence of diverse groups. Teachers and society assume that the only thing wrong with diverse children is the environment that they live in. The problem rest with the school systems. They need to put different cultures within the schools curriculum..

The word â€multiculturalism” is define as being, †a general desire or need for students to have something in the curriculum that relates to their own ethnic traits, if these exists, or to those of their parents ancestors”. Culture is define in a way where †a particular group is categorized reality in terms of language, beliefs, values, customs, kinship patterns, skills , and dietary customs”. This means that culture with it’s different practices, and beliefs help diverse people make sense of the world. Culture and our whole outlook of the world are put together by our attitudes, values, opinions, and concepts. Also affect on how we think, make decisions, behave, and define events. For people to understand people from other cultures they need to understand their attitudes, values, and beliefs, and where they come from. They need to understand how racism and oppression effects them and how they cope with it. The education system has a responsibility to recognize and respect diversity because it’s not going away.

The goal of multi cultural education is to teach students different cultural backgrounds so they can function in a diverse, cultural world, which is reality. The debate over multiculturalism is how to define the content and practices, along with what groups would benefit from it. Some researchers view multi cultural education as †specifically addressing bilingual, bicultural education, race and ethnicity”. Multi cultural education shouldn’t be categorized to fit one group, mostly the more oppressed or the most talked about minorities. Multi cultural education should be for all diverse and oppressed groups. The problem is that most teachers are not familiar with different cultures, so it starts with teachers. They need to be educated themselves. All the teachers not just the white one’s need to be taught different cultural. A lot of teachers don’t even know their own background. When the teachers are caught up with their education, then a multi cultural curriculum and can be created, which won’t be easy. It requires sensitivity, respect, understanding and acceptance for ethnic social and cultural diversity. It also requires †an understanding that variations in learning experiences have an effect on a students achievement and performance outcomes”. Students should benefit from this, to where it boost their self-esteem and academic and personal achievements. This program should be used to minimize stereotypes and prejudices, understanding one’s attitudes in order to understand where that person is coming from.

Some states are already starting a multi cultural education program, such as New York. Teachers reported teaching materials on minorities and women. Others dealt with the Holocaust. †A survey of in-service workshops completed by New York State teachers in 10-1 showed that far more had taken workshops on African History, black studies, ethnic studies, multi cultural education, and cultural diversity than of American and European History”. As I said before it starts with the teachers education. How are they suppose to teach a multi cultural education program if they don’t know anything about other cultural. You learn about Euro- American history starting in the 4th or 5th grade till your finish with school all together. The most you learn about other cultural, mostly deals with slavery, war , and protesting, which are all important no doubt, but it doesn’t explain everything.
