Robert Henri an American painter and art educator was born in Cincinnati Ohio in 1865. He was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris. In 181 he began to paint and teach in Philadelphia, where he met the painters John Sloan, William Glackens and George Luks. He inspired them to paint American life with vigorous dramatic realism. The Group moved to New York City, they joined other painters to form the Eight or the so-called Ashcan school. Henri broke with academic tradition, especially in his portrayals of the crude vigor of city life. He was not content to paint portrait s of the Aristocrats but he paint portraits of everyday poor people living in the city.

Henri was known for his warm, vibrant portraits, particularly of children. In his painting the Portrait of Willie Gee, oil on canvas, 104, his robust, free brushwork and strong compositions can be seen. Willie Gee was a newspaper boy who delivered Henri's paper at his Sherwood Studio at Sixth Ave. and 57th street.

Willie Gee is a naturalistic portrait where in most of the outlines are blurred and the colors are muted. Dark colors are use throughout the painting with the exception of the apple that was painted red. The red apple could be seen against the dark tones of colors and these contrasts draw my attention to the significant of the apple. This apple according to the artist is an inexpensive form of nourishment given by a benevolent society to newsboy. White color was used to depict Willie's eyes and his tie. Henri captures Willie Gee form when he placed him against a dark background. He uses heavy strokes with his brushes and each can be seen on the painting. He subordinated the background by not placing any objects there, so that all the Emphasis could be focus on Willie's face and the red apple in his hand. These I believe were the focal point of the painting.

Cheap Custom Essays on THE PORTRAIT OF WILLIE GEE The painting is not detail except for Willie's face where Implied light was used. The source of light cannot be seen but from the way the shadows fall it catches Willie's face on the right side. Willie's eyes are bright and hold a lot of sadness not found often in children. The red apple in his hand, did not take the tired, sad look out of his eyes. The light that falls on Willie's face seems to fall on the apple in his hand. The hand holding the apple was not shown, the apple seems to be balancing on air. The top half of the painting is somewhat detail while the bottom half is not detail. Directional lines also play an important role in the portrait of Willie's Gee. The sad look in his eyes drew my attention first to his face and then to the apple. This links the painting together so that our eyes will look from his face to the apple and from the apple to his face.

What captured my attention about this painting was the look on Willie's face. The colors used give an emotional effect so I have a direct emotional response to it. This painting was a reality not a sense of someone posing for a picture but real life. Everything about the painting depicted the time and what was going on with poverty and the poor. Many artists did not paint the poor and poverty but they usually paint the rich.

Henri taught at the Art Students League and other schools in New York City, championed juryless exhibitions, and traveled widely. The Art Spirit, a compilation of Henri's lectures, was published in 1 and is still read. The Portrait of Willie Gee can be seen at The Newark Museum. The painting is 1 1/4x 6 ¼. He died in 1.

"A very Old Man with Enormous Wings"

by

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Magical Realism, is chiefly style or genre originating in Latin America that combines fantastic or dreamlike elements of realism. The term was first applied in the 10 to a school of painters, and is used to describe the prose fiction of originally Luis Borges, as well as writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Laura Esquivel. Both writers Marquez and Esquivel interweave, in an ever-shifting pattern, a sharply etched realism in representing ordinary events and descriptive details together with fantastic and dreamlike elements. Both writes use this technique to both tell a story and truly express feelings, like love. Magical Realism allows a writer to step beyond the boundaries of realism to express a feeling, without stepping completely over to fiction. Lets look at few pieces of literature that uses Magical Realism, first "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", by Marquez, and second "Like Water for Chocolate, by Esquivel.

Marquez's "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" fulfills every characteristic of Magical Realism. This short story was first published in 155, and includes man aspects, which may be described as magical. In the story, and old man with a very poor set of wings is found and kept as a pet for several years. These wings were described by the doctor as "…so natural on that completely human organism that he couldn't understand why other men didn't have them, too"(charters 0). Marquez does not stop with the man with wings, but goes on to add to the story, the tale of the lady spider. The lady spider had the body of a tarantula and the head of a young girl. She was transformed to this state after sneaking out of her parent's home to attend a dance. The lady spider takes away the mans mob of spectators, leaving him ordinary in that he is still around even after his fifteen minutes of fame are over. This story has other elements of magic elements. For example, the overabundance of crabs, an infestation so bad, that the smell alone makes the baby sick.

Early I mentioned the detailing words used to express magic and feelings. In this story Marquez's use of numbers also seems magical in a sense. The story itself takes place on the third day of rain, not simply when it is raining outside. Father Gonzaga arrives before seven o'clock in the morning, not just early. And Marquez express feelings by saying, "The world was sad since Tuesday" (Charters 04). This describes the mood of the people as not only sad, but extraordinarily sad and for a space of time as well.

In this story the magical elements are treated as though they are everyday occurrences or at least somewhat expectable. The characters reacts to the old man with wings as one reacts to an out of the ordinary person, however once the novelty has passed, the man becomes ordinary.

Magical Realism has two sides, the magic and the realistic. In this story it realistic that the family holding the angle sells tickets for admission to see the angle in order to better their financial standing. The mobs that abandon the old man are very fickle, just like Tennessee fans are in reality; they desert their team for another. The lady spider is the new better team. And the old man might have better luck next year.

Marquez uses many other examples of Magic and Realism in this story, but let's look at another story. Let's look at "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel. Esquivel published this story in 18, she is from Mexico, and this was her first novel. She uses a number a magical elements mixed with real to life feelings and problems. The real part first, in the story there are three daughters, the youngest being Tita. Tita falls in love with a man named Pedro, but isn't allowed to marry him. Pedro feels the same way about Tita, and will do anything he can to be close to her. So, Perdo decides to marry Tita's sister Rosaura. This might seemed far fetched, but it is not magically part of the story. The magical part comes in a little later, for example when Tita is making Rosaura's wedding cake while thinking of Pedro and begins to cry. She drops a single tear into the meringue of the wedding cake, and through her feels ruins the cake and makes everyone sick. Another quick mention of magical elements is when the girl Gertrudis was sweating pink sweat that smelled like roses, a lovely strong smell (5).

Both authors do a very good job of conveying the feeling of their characters using magical elements while present a true to life story. This style of writing is not a new genre, it has been around for nearly 85 years, and is now being used by much more that just Latin Authors. It is a strong way to express feelings while telling a story, and the style is being adopted by many authors throughout the world.

The Undiscovered Continent

The American beliefs of the 150s were much different from those held today. Racism was at its highest, the civil rights movement was just emerging, and Ralph Ellison made a statement about race relations with his 15 fiction novel Invisible Man. The first chapter of the novel depicts a young black man that faces ridicule and humiliation in order to improve himself. "Battle Royal" makes a powerful statement about American race relations during the time. Ellison uses symbolism to make his statement. Symbolism in Ellison's "Battle Royal" contributes to the story's themes of an America that suppresses and objectifies certain members of its society.

The narrator is a powerful speaker, and because of this gift, he is invited to speak at a town meeting that includes influential members of white society. He believes he is brought to the meeting to give a speech but upon arrival, he "discover(s) it was on the occasion of the smoker" (Ellison ). He is also told that a battle royal was going to take place and that he is to participate. Of course, "the battle royal came first" (). The smokers' meeting provides a subdued but commanding symbol for Ellison's story. The homogenous and elite group disillusions a young black man into coming to speak at their meeting, which demonstrates their desire to place him on display as something different and strange from them. The group places no value on the boy's time or dignity. The group literally beats him down and displays his place in society. They make him fight like an animal and take all human qualities from him. This group demonstrates the belief system that existed in America during the early fifties. The society is segregated and is afraid to be accepting of differences. A few groups make decisions and create the value system. The smoker's club symbolizes these elitist within 150s America.

During the meeting, Ellison introduces a female stripper who dons an American flag tattoo. This character is also dominant symbol within the story. She not only supports the themes of objectivity and suppression, but also introduces the idea that another part of society outside of race experiences this suppression. She does not speak but only dances, which makes her an object for the men to gawk. She is in the scene only for the visual pleasure she provides and exhibits no human qualities other than her body parts. Ellison demonstrates this dehumanization well with his description of her body "Her breasts were firm and round as the domes of East Indian temples, and I stood so close as to see the fine skin texture and beads of pearly perspiration glistening like dew around the pink and erected buds of her nipples" (4). The author describes her body with such detail that each part almost becomes separated from the girl. Each body part is an object; therefore, she is an object. This symbol, which ironically wears an American flag, continues to demonstrate the 150s society that dehumanizes and objectifies certain sections of the society.

As the story continues and the battle royal resolves, the teacher, who invites him to participates, hands him a leather satchel that contains a scholarship to the state college for Negroes. The teacher hands him the briefcase "I was so moved that I could hardly express my thanks. A rope of bloody saliva forming a shape like an undiscovered continent drooled upon the leather" (8). This drop of blood provides another powerful symbol in Ellison's story. He describes the continent as undiscovered. The journey the young black man was about to take could lead to undiscovered territory. The journey could take the boy to a land where everyone is treated equally and has the same opportunities. The student could find a place where people are not objectivities and are not forced to participate in dehumanizing activities such as the battle royal. This land, just as the undiscovered continent of blood, is uncharted and unexplored but is possible. Ellison's symbol makes this compelling statement.

Ellison's "Battle Royal" makes an eye-opening statement about not only American society in the 150s, but also today's society. Although great advancement has been made in race relations, the battle is not over. Everyday stories of race wars and hate crimes top headlines, which demonstrates the battle is never ending. The narrator faces a physical and brutal battle that would not likely occur in today's society, but minority groups fight the same battle daily through affirmative action cases and other race issues. Ellison uses symbols throughout his story to demonstrate these problems that plague society. His symbols demonstrate how individuals are objectified and dehumanized. They also demonstrate how society segregates itself into groups that look to exert some power. His symbols also give hope that a nation can change. The 150s undiscovered continent of blood is no longer undiscovered, but is still being explored today.

In The Things They Carried Tim O'Brien describes the world of the grunt. The story starts out with a fairly technical list of military equipment, rattling out weights of guns and ammunition. The descriptions give us a sense of the weight a soldier bears to war. However, as the story progresses O'Brien begins to draw attention to the weightless burdens of the soldiers. The soldiers have on their backs and shoulders memories from home, of love, or in LT Cross's case, the lack of love. They carried Vietnam itself, the air, the smells, the dirt, even the sky around them weighed down on their minds. In the end, we see that what weighs the grunt down is not the 0 clips of 7.6 ammunition, or the 0 pound radio, but the burdens that cannot be measured on a scale. The most painful of these burdens, we are told, were the fears, feelings of cowardice, embarrassment, and terror. As O'Brien describes it, the reason these young men went to war was not because they wanted to fight or be heroes, but because their fear of being cowards. The emotional burdens carried by the soldier in Vietnam outweighed the physical ones, but it was the also the emotional burdens that pushed the men forward along their pointless marches through the jungle.

What holds the men back the most is the fear of being seen as a coward. They made themselves tough, at least on the outside. They laughed at the ones that could not hide their fear, the ones that had shot themselves to escape Vietnam, even though in the back of their heads they were envious of the ones that flew away free. During firefights they would all lose the façade of composure, praying for their lives, but afterwards they would make themselves rise again. They felt ashamed of themselves but could not show it. They made themselves act normally, make jokes about the dead, and laugh it all off. But on the inside they all felt the same thing, the feeling of fear, and the immense burden of being alive in Vietnam. As O'Brien puts it, "They were afraid to die, but even more afraid of showing it."

The burden of love is what weighs down Lieutenant Jimmy Cross the most. He loved Martha so much that it hurt him. What hurt him the most was that he knew that she did not love him back He because lost in his mixed thoughts of love, lust, and jealousy. He wanted so much for her to be his, that he became paranoid about her. For this reason, Jimmy Cross inadvertently allowed the death of Ted Lavender. He blamed himself for it, feeling the guilt of being allowing himself to be blinded by his love. He burned the pictures of Martha, but realized that it was merely superficial, and did not change his thoughts about her. He hated her for loving her, and felt guilty about losing his sense of responsibility for his men over a girl. He forced himself to throw away love, and enforce strict field regulations; to forget his feelings, in order to save his men.

Help with essay on The weight of Feelings

The experiences of had by the men of A company shows that when they went of to war, they took with them not only guns and ammunition, but all their feelings of fear, love and loss. The feelings they carry with them are the things that make them fighters. Half the time, the actual equipment for military use is thrown away, or even if used, doesn't serve its purpose well, such as the mine detector. The fact that they have no physical purpose for being in Vietnam except for the fear of failure and embarrassment, and the arsenal of America cannot prevent Ted Lavender from getting shot while taking a piss shows the true futility of the entire war.

If you order your cheap essays from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Grown Up. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Grown Up, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Grown Up paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! To be grown up is not just a physical thing it is also mental actually it is all mental. What does being grown up actually mean, does it mean to act mature all the time? Does it mean to take care of responsibility? Does it mean you have authority, or does it mean you are watched and judged for all actions by all people every single time you go out in public? Well, being grown up means all these things and more but acting grown up is just the beginning.

When people talk about being grown up the talk about maturity and acting mature and doing nothing else except acting a certain age which actually is not definite. The means of acting a certain age is not definite because you can be grown up at any point in time in your life. If there was a 10-year old kid sitting around running the house and taking care of responsibilities in the house he might be considered grown up because he is taking care business. But, he might be acting his age like the kids in "Through The Tunnel" how they were pretty old but still acting like kids. Kids sometimes are justified as young, arrogant, selfish, spoiled, brats. There are some so-called "grown-ups" that act just as they do but with even less sense.

Grown ups have lots of responsibility especially when they are living on there own or with a family. The reason why they have so much responsibility is because they have to do a lot of things to become successful in life much like kids but not quite the same. Kids responsibility is to go to school and learn so that they can be successful. Being grown up is part of that responsibility by that meaning successful. So to be grown up people need to take care of all responsibilities and know how to maintain that status that person is at or improve where they are in life.

What it means to be grown up has no definite answer because you can be gown but not no how to be grown. Being grown up is basically though there is no true answer just means respect the inner you and take care of you and the things that come along in life in a responsible way. Although being "grown up" may sound easy it isn't it takes work and that work is knowing how to think smart and use intelligence to guide you down every path you take or there will be no being grown up.

Gilgamesh's and Mine Journey through Life.

Life can easily be understood as journey of understanding and growth. We are born, we grow and we learn, and come to understand the nature of life through our victories and our failures. Although my journey through life can be seen in a somewhat different light as Gilgamesh's, there are still many similarities within our two excursions.

A life filled with discontent and depression as well as my experiences in school shaped and changed my life. It was not until after graduation from high school that I realized there was a better place for me in this world. Early on, my Journey through life was filled with hard times and I had to go through prolonged states of depression. These adverse conditions unfortunately will stay with me for the rest of my life because they are brought about because of a chemical unbalance in my brain. Because of that chemical distortion, I had to be put on medication, medication that I am still taking. Now, thank goodness, the medicine allows me to remain free of my sadness and frustrations.

Also, I finished school, but this too was a hard time in my life. I had to study harder than most other students because of a learning disability. I have a reading comprehension problem, where I don't understand what I have read. I had to stay in remedial classes (LD) from age three until I was in tenth grade; when at last, the LD teacher told me I could transfer into regular classes. These regular classes where harder, but I found I could do the work expected of me with little problem. I stayed in school and I graduated. Consequently, I am now in college and am going to major in Accounting. I have been in college for about three years and now have earned fifty-two credits. At this time I am working on my fourth year and looking to transfer to UNLV. As a result of my educational experience, I have a far better life since moving to Nevada.

Write my Essay on gilgamesh

Gilgamesh's experience, his journey, also changed his life. When the citizens of Uruk were displeased with Gilgamesh's behavior and asked the gods for help, the Gods responded by sending a man named Enkidu. Enkidu was half man and half animal, created by Gilgamesh. The two were enemies at first; but eventually, they became the best of friends. The citizens treated Enkidu as if he was the king. Gilgamesh was the real king, but the citizens did not like him. They thought of him as a poor king.

The two men decided to go on a quest, a journey where they, together, conquered Humbana. Ishtar becomes frustrated with Gilgamesh because of her desire to become friends with him. So, she asks her father to send the Bull of Heaven to punish Gilgamesh, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu defeat the Bull of Heaven. At this point, Enkidu gets sick and dies, and Gilgamesh is very sad about the death of his friend. It is then that Gilgamesh recounts the wonderful experience he had with Enkidu and greatly praises his friend. As time passes, Gilgamesh becomes fearful for his own death and decides he wants to attain immortality from the Fountain of Youth. So, he goes on to Urshanabi to find the Fountain of Youth, where the god Utnapishtim gives him a choice to stay awake for seven days and seven nights to be immortal. He falls asleep before the seven days and seven nights is up, and discovers that every man must some day be taken from the natural world and experience the spirits of the afterlife. Gilgamesh said, "Me! Will I too not die like Enkidu? Sorrow was come into my belly. I fear death; I roam over the hills. I will seize the road; quickly I will go to the house of Utnapishtim, offspring of Ubaratutu. I approach the entrance of the mountain at night. Lions I see, and I am terrified. I lift my head to pray to the mood god Sin For…a dream I go to the gods in prayer …preserve me!" Gilgamesh has here looked death squarely in the face and defeated it. I too at one critical moment in my life took on and defeated my problems; and like Gilgamesh; I became a better person.

For both Gilgamesh and me, our differences are not all that far removed from how people look at and understand us. We both had to go through a journey in our lives that made each of us stronger. In the book our first view of Gilgamesh is the epitome of a bad ruler arrogant, oppressive, and brutal, where the people of Uruk complain of his oppressive adherence to the Sumerian gods. However, the citizens and Gods sent him on a journey that made him a hero. Gilgamesh begins with a cruel and arrogant character; nonetheless, he emerges as a strong, kindhearted hero. Now, Gilgamesh is a man with no equal, so he feels at least equivalent in stature to all those around him.

People will always complain that others are trying to bring then down. This obstruction can help us to become a better person because we might listen and think the things they have to say might be true. People always told me throughout my life I wouldn't amount to anything, that I wouldn't finish school, nor would I would even make it a semester in college. But I made it through school knowing I can do all that I set out to do. Like Gilgamesh, I too set out on a journey of understanding, and I too ended my journey knowing more of myself and my capabilities.

The Prioress tells a tale set in an Asian town dominated by the Jewry in which usury and other things hateful to Christ occurred. The Christian minority in the town opened a little Christian school for their children in this city. Among these children was a widow's son, an innocent seven year old who was, even at his young age, deeply devoted to his faith. At school he learned a song in Latin, the Alma redemptoris, and asked the meaning of it. According to his comrade, this song was composed about the Virgin Mary in order to greet her, and also to pray to her to be our help and succor when we die. The seven year old then said that he would learn the Latin song before Christmas. Day by day his comrade taught it to him secretly on the way home until he knew the song by heart. The seven year old would sing it twice a day, once on the way to school and once on the way home. The heart of the child was set on Christ's mother.

As he was walking home from school one day singing this song, he provoked the anger of the Jews of the city, whose hearts were possessed by Satan. They hired a murderer who slit the boy's throat and threw the body into a pit. The poor widow searched for her missing child, begging the Jews to tell her where her child might be found, but they refused to help. When she found him, although his throat was slit, he began to sing the Alma redemptoris. The other Christians of the city rushed to the child and carried him to the abbey. The provost cursed the Jews who knew of this murder and at once ordered their death by first dragging them with wild horses and after that he hanged them according to law.

Before the child was buried, he began to speak. The Virgin Mary had placed a grain on his tongue that allowed him to speak, despite his fatal wound, but when the grain was removed he would finally pass on to heaven. The story ends with a lament for the young child and a curse on the Jews who perpetrated this crime.

ANALYSIS

The Prioress' tale is overtly a religious tale centered around Christian principles and a devotion to the Virgin Mary, but within the warm affection that the Prioress shows for her Christian faith is a worrying anti-Semitism that will be immediately obvious to the modern reader. The tale is a stressed melodrama, filled with scenes of moral instruction. The tale is a courageous celebration of motherhood. The guiding figure of the tale is the Virgin Mary, who serves as the paradigm for Christian values and the intervening spirit who sustains the murdered child before he passes on to heaven. Her mortal parallel is the mother of the murdered boy, who dearly loves her son and struggles to find the boy when he is lost. The illustration of the mother is the most realistic section of the story, for the Prioress finds in the mother a legitimate fear and concern that transcends the more sentimental and guilty portions of the tale.

Yet surrounding the kernels of legitimate pain and suffering in the Prioress' Tale are sections that are nothing more than shallow sentimentalism and vicious prejudice. The child is angelic, at seven years old more devoted to Christian teachings than anyone in the story. The final moments of the tale in which the Virgin Mary sustains him after his throat is slit are a shameless exploitation meant to persuade false tears. The Prioress extends warmth and sympathy only to the mother and her child, while heaping unabashed wrath upon the Jews of the city, who are portrayed as nothing less than allies of Satan. The details of the murder are gruesome the child is murdered for singing the praises of the Virgin Mary and dumped in a pit. The logical conclusion of this tale is the Prioress' curse on the Jews for their actions.

With these simple steps, anybody can write an "A" quality essay. All it takes is a well-written introduction, body and conclusion. These steps are a lot easier than most people make them out to be.

The first, and most important, step to writing an "A" essay is the introduction. The purpose of the introduction is to get the reader's attention. The introduction should also let the reader know the contents of your essay. To get the reader's attention use a lead-in. a lead-in is a sentence or phrase that captures the interest of the reader. One way to do this is to appeal to the emotions or feelings of the reader. A lead-in can be in the form of a question, a shocking statement, a headline, or a statistic; as long as it gets the attention of the reader. A thesis statement should also be included in the introduction. The thesis should inform the reader as to the contents of the essay and how the essay is organized. The reader should be able to read the thesis statement and find a specific topic in the essay without having to read the entire essay. This can be done by organizing the body paragraphs in the same order as the items in the thesis statement.

Step two, in writing an "A" essay, is writing effective body paragraphs. In order for them to be effective, they must support the thesis sentence. The worst thing to do is to go off on subjects that have nothing to do with the essay. To avoid getting off the subject, try not to use stories as examples or to prove a point. Every body paragraph should have a topic sentence. The other sentences in the paragraph should support the topic sentence. The paragraph, as a whole, should support the thesis sentence.

The third and final step to writing an "A" essay is the conclusion. The conclusion should summarize the entire paper in a few sentences. To do this, cover the main points in the essay. One way of doing this is to reword the thesis statement. The conclusion should also influence the reader to use the knowledge he or she has received by reading your essay.

The electronic security industry can be described as the use of electronic coding and software programming for the creation of exclusive systems for security purposes. Today, information technology has created a "border-less world" with concepts such as the global network spearheading the way. The global connectivity offers a vast array of new possibilities to the users who have to be certain that personal information will not be misused. Therefore, privacy and authenticity would naturally be the two key concerns of the global network users. The solution to these issues is based on the science of cryptography where data encryption and digital signatures guarantee confidentiality and integrity. The technology then manifests itself to the user through smart cards applications. Smart cards form a platform from which providers are able to offer new services, enhancing payment or identification systems. This system provides added benefits to the users as the information can be tailored to the needs of the individual holder. Another facet of the electronic security system is the provision of hardware security equipment that we have been familiar with. This includes electrical equipment such as electronic safes, home alarm systems, fire alarm systems and others.

.1 Smart cards

Smart cards are secure and compact data carriers that are capable of processing, storing and safeguarding thousands of bytes of data. Smart cards with electrical contacts have a thin metallic plate just above the centre line on one side of the card. Beneath this plate is an integrated circuit ("IC") chip containing a central processing unit ("CPU"), random access memory ("RAM") and non-volatile data storage. Data stored in the smart cards microchip can be accessed only through the chip operating system ("COS"), providing a high level of data security. This security takes the form of passwords that allow users to access parts of the IC chips memory or encryption/decryption measures that translate the bytes stored in memory into information.

A smart card begins with a micro-controller produced by semiconductor manufacturers such as Siemens Inc., Motorola Inc. and Thomson Inc.. This integrated circuit chip is attached to an electronic module by inserting into a cavity on the module. Then, terminals between the chip and the electronic module are interconnected. Finally, the chip-embedded electronic module is glued to a plastic card.

. Smart Card Readers

Smart cards can be applied for electronic commerce, financial services, government, corporations, loyalty program services, network and Internet security, PC security, software copy protection and other varied applications. These applications are dependent on the ability to make a computer and a smart card communicator. Therefore, the smart cards are placed in a smart card reader, which is connected to the computer. Smart cards may be read by conventional card reader or by wireless terminals. New devices similar to a floppy disk allow smart cards to be read by PC disk drive.

Smart card readers are designed to read the magnetic stripe data on all chip card platforms. The application solutions normally come fully equipped with both standardised and certified hardware and software and are compliant with protocols for secured electronic commerce.

It can be summarised that the necessary requirements for the creation of smart cards applications are as follows-

§ A computer with application software that is able to generate commands for card reader, cards and the data recorded in the cards;

§ Smart cards as the physical item for execution and storing information;

§ A smart card reader that possesses the appropriate protocol to read the stored information; and

§ Data encryption and compression. This may be performed in the software, the card reader or the card itself.

Doe Season Andys Epiphany

The process of finding out who one is can be very turbulent and confusing. Through growing up one goes through so many different changes in terms of ones personality and deciding who they are and what they want to be. The little girl in David Kaplans Doe Season goes through one of these changes, as do many other adolescents confused about who they are, and finds out that there are some aspects of a persons identity that cannot be changed no matter how hard he/she tries.

Andy is a nine-year-old girl who doesnt want to grow up to be a woman. When she talks of the sea and how she remembers her mother loving it and how much she hated it is a clue that she prefers to be a boy. The sea is symbolic of womanhood and the forest is symbolic of manhood. Andy expresses extreme distaste for the sea and a curiosity of the woods. She never really admits to liking the woods but the way she refers to it is always as if shes fascinated by it, but she doesnt know much about it. Therefore, she must go hunting as a test to see if she belongs. To contrast how she feels about the sea and the forest, she refers to the forest as deep and immense, while she refers to the sea as huge and empty. Andy sees the mans world as a wonderful, fascinating world while she sees the womans world as meaningless and empty.

Andy sees the changes into a woman on the horizon and she is scared by these changes because they are very confusing to her. This is why she trys to do man-type things such as hunting. To further confuse her, her father supports her striving to be part of the mans world. He refers to her as Andy even though her real name is Andrea and takes her with him to do manly things.

Custom Essays on Doe Season: Andy's Epiphany

The reader first gets a hint of the fact that Andy is unable to be a member of the male fraternity when she expresses her disliking of Mac. Mac is representational of the typical boy in this story. Andy thinks that Mac is stupid and is annoyed by all of the pranks and teasing he submits her to. This is an extension of her femininity, even though she doesnt quite grasp that fact. The next instance where she feels out of place in this man-world is, when at lunch, they are conversing about deer. She makes the comment that she sees a deer once behind their house and Charlie Spoon tells her that was because it is not hunting season. They then converse about how deer know when and when it isnt hunting season and start laughing about it. This whole conversation confuses Andy and makes her feel out of place. Later on, when they set up tents, she has to sleep in a tent with Mac. The things that Mac talks to her about before they go to sleep make her feel uncomfortable. First he asks her if shes ever seen someones pecker and that makes her feel uncomfortable. Mac then talks to her about gutting a deer and it makes her think about how it would feel if someone did that to her. Two times during the story Andy sees deer. One time when she is gathering firewood and another when she takes a walk on her own. The reason she is able to see these deer is because the deer dont think she poses any threat. Due to her feminine nature, the deer can tell that she is a girl and dont think she means to do them harm. This is what leads to Andy to ultimately realizing that she doesnt want to be part of the male society. The last time she sees a deer she leads everyone to it. Her dad then talks her into shooting the deer. When Andys father begins to gut the deer Andy has her epiphany. At that point she realizes that she cant become part of the male society. This causes her to go running from everyone as she is forced into her nature and forced to become part of the inevitable, female society.

Andys father takes her hunting as a test. The hunting trip is an initiation test to see if she has what it takes to be accepted into the mans world. She fails the test when she feels bad about shooting the deer and runs in the other direction when her father and Charlie Spoon go to gut the deer. The fact that she doesnt like shooting the deer, which is the main goal of hunting, is evidence that she doesnt like the male world.

In addition to her physical epiphany, Andy has an epiphany on a higher lever. The hunting trip leads Andy to the realization that even if she likes the male world, there are some aspects of who she is that she cant change regardless of how she feels about them and how hard she tries to change them. Andy embraces the male world as an attempt to escape from becoming a part of the female world only to be rejected by the male world through a humiliating experience that teaches her that she does not fit in. This rejection is what makes her realize that there are immutable changes about people. She cant be male material because of her nature and genetic makeup.

Andy is a girl who is scared of what a females world is and the confusion that goes along with becoming a female. This reaction to the female world drives her to try and be a part of the male world. Andy realizes at the end of the story that she doesnt want to be a part of the male world. She also realizes that no matter what she does, she cant deny her gender and that in some aspects a person must be satisfied with his/her identity.

The Meiji restoration reshaped the way of Japanese living, culture and industry. Clothes, buildings, labour, speech and military were all modernised due to the adapted Western influence. The vision of hope in war was given to the neighbouring Asian countries.

In the time of the Meiji revolution, Japanese culture was reformed to a large extent. The cultural ways of the Japanese society were completely changed when the country of Japan was forced to open its walls to the outside world. The cause of this was a letter from the US President sent via a US Naval Commodore, Matthew Perry. Perry also offered the country a mechanical toy train and industrial ideas that could help Japan modernise their country.

The firm social structure of the Japanese people was completely eliminated and instead substituted with the law that all people were to be treated equally and demand equal rights. The Japanese adapted Western speech, clothes and foods that became standard behaviour of the people. The Samurais' were pulled down to the level of everybody else and were no longer being funded with rations.

Cheap Custom Essays on Meiji RestorationWith all the positives there was bound to be set backs for the nation. The land for the farmers was now dealt out evenly between them. This made work quite stressful as most of them had to cultivate more than they started with. All citizens soon realised that these sacrifices had to be made to improve their industry.

Upgrading the Japanese industry was the main objective of the Meiji and came with great expenses to the nation. Railways, electricity, textile mills and mines were created in conjunction with the background Western ideas. The Japanese became major manufacturers of silk and silk products. The earnings were then used to construct the railway that travelled from Tokyo to Yokohama. To achieve such things adults and children were forced to work a gruelling 1 hours a day in terrible mining conditions. The worst place known for this was Battleship Island. The circumstances were dreadful, with families having to live in octopus dens and share only a few beds between them. The miners were informed that any escape attempt would end in death.

One of the most common problems that immigrants faced when they arrive in their new country is how to assimilate into that country's tradition and values without losing your sense of identity. In the story "El Patron" Senor Matinez after immigrating to the United States wanted to instill the traditional Mexican values of war and the love for his country into his son Tito but Tito haven been born and raised in the United States have learnt America's value of individualism. The story deals with the conflicts between father and son and also cultural conflicts.

"El Patron" presents a common problem amongst immigrant families all over the world. Many families when immigrate to a new country would face problems of integrating and assimilating into society. For Senor Matinez, who settled in the United States and raised a family there still carry with him his Mexican belief in dying for one's country and the pride of going to war. For him going to war and following government orders are what he believe would make him a proud American citizen. To have his son go to war and fight for his new country is an honor and almost an act of gratitude to the United States for giving him and his family and new life and home. However, Tito, Senor Matinez's son does not think and feel the same way that Senor Matinez feels. Tito, born, raised and instilled by the true American tradition opposes the war and find no cause in attacking a country for the oil field. Raised in a country where freedom of speech and having a sense of individuality is most valued Tito finds himself in a precarious situation between his father's demand that he should serve his country and his own conscience of fighting in a war of lost cause. Eventually Tito stands by his own self-conscience. It may seem like the conflict between Senor Matinez and Tito are universal conflicts between father and son with different points of views and ideas in which it is, nevertheless, the conflicts reaches out to a greater conflict, which is the conflict between two cultures and two generations.

Even though Senor Matinez and his son disagree upon whether Tito should go to war or not, but in the end the conflict was resolved. Both parties were divided in their points of view and the only way they could resolve their difference was through a mediator. Both Senor Matinez and Tito expressed their points of view about the conflict and both understood each other's position and accepted and respected each other's decision. Through mediation, talking, exchanging ideas and a little understand cross-cultural problems can be resolved.

The story "El Patron" shows that assimilation, for first generation immigrants are not as easy as the children of the first generation because the children have more exposure to the cultures and ways of the American life where as the parents are pretty much still attached to the old and tradition values of the country. As much as Senor Matinez believes he is an American (through his act of sending his only son to fight for ‘his' country) Senor Matinez cannot let go of his original culture and beliefs. Ironically enough through Senor Matinez's patriotism for America it can perhaps be analyzed that Senor Matinez is more American than his American-born son. For Tito, as a man born of an immigrant family he is surely the infinitive definition for being an American as he holds many of the American values dearly to him and was willing to fight his family and his country for what he believed in his heart was right. The story "El Patron" also shows the differences in the two conflicting views that both cultures have towards the value of education. Senor Matinez feels that education does not instill the values that he wishes into his son.

Order Custom "El Patron'" and the Immigrant experience paper

Overall, the immigrant experience for Senor Matinez, Tito, and Lola are both positive and negative. For Senor Matinez the immigrant experience for him is rather a negative experience because he has lost the ability to instill his Mexican culture and heritage into his children. Because of this inability to pass on his cultural heritage to his children it causes a gap between him and his children leading to misunderstanding and conflict as seen from the story "El Patron". It seems like Senor Matinez is the least out of the three characters (Tito and Lola) to adapt and assimilate into American society. Senor Matinez still hold much of his old habits and cultural values from Mexico as seen from his treatment to his daughter Lola, no involving her into any of the family problems and sending her to the kitchen while the men talk in the living room. Again the concept of equality amongst men and women is a relatively foreign concept for Senor Matinez. On the contrary Lola, Senor Matinez's American born daughter feels differently because Lola demands that her dad treat her as equal to that of the way Senor Matinez would treat her husband. When we look at Lola and Tito, both American born children of an immigrant family, has assimilated into American culture pretty well. Tito has learnt to voice what he believed is right and wrong and is willing to go against all odds.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a young graffiti artist in New York. He was born in Brooklyn on December , 160. Ever since he was a child, he showed an interest in art which his mother encouraged. He grew up to be one of the most famous artists of our times, but also one of the most troubled. He died at the young age of 7 from a heroin overdose. I believe factors other than that of the drug overdose led to Basquiat's death. Those factors are The stresses of being an artist in the city, hereditary depression, and the death of his good friend and fellow artist, Andy Warhol.

Jean-Michel's career as an artist started when "he left high school a year before graduation, and sold hand-painted postcards on the streets. He also started spraying cryptic aphorisms on subways and around Brooklyn with the signature SAMO" (Parker). "In June of 180, Jean-Michel's art was publicly exhibited for the first time in an art show sponsored by Colab" (Parker). After this, Jean-Michel's art career boomed. The movie Basquiat showed many of his gallery showings where he sold art for thousands of dollars. Jean-Michel faced much racism in the powerful white art world. In the movie, "His admirers said "This…is the real voice of the gutter!" At another point he is described as the "Pickaninny of the art world." He hears "There has never been a black painter who was considered important" (Ebert) Jean-Michel later signed on with his first full-time dealer. Annina Nosei cleared out her gallery basement for Jean-Michel to use as his studio. While Jean-Michel was painting, Nosei would bring down clients and disrupt him. She would also sell his unfinished works without his permission. This upset Jean-Michel and he ended up leaving Nosei. Afterwards he went through a number of other galleries and dealers, but he had problems with almost all of them (Brain-Juice).

Jean-Michel suffered from hereditary depression. There is a scene in the movie where he goes to visit his mother. She doesn't even respond to him. She just stares with a sad and blank look on her face. Even though Jean-Michel was surrounded by people, he still felt himself to be alone. Throughout the movie you rarely see Jean-Michel happy. He always has a distant look on his face, like he wants to escape reality. In multiple parts of the movie, Jean-Michel looks up into the sky and sees figures surfing in the ocean. He even mentions, in the last scene, of going to Hawaii (Basquiat). I feel that the need to escape reality was the ultimate reason for his drug abuse. The final straw was pulled when his friend, Andy Warhol, died.

Write my Essay on Basquiat and His Death for me Jean-Michel's and Andy's relationship was definitely an odd one. They first met when Jean-Michel strode up to Warhol's studio and tried to sell him some painted postcards (Basquiat). They later encountered each other at art shows where they developed a good friendship. "Apparently Basquiat was the first African American that Andy ever befriended (AXE). In Basquiat Andy and Jean-Michel were portrayed as good friends. "Warhol supplied the younger artist with introductions to wealthy clients as well as serving as a surrogate father figure" (AXE). When Jean-Michel found out about Andy's death, it was as if the whole world shattered around him. Jean-Michel is seen walking the streets in pajamas, lost to the world (Basquiat). He abused his drugs more but "attempted to kick his heroin addiction by leaving the temptations of New York for his ranch in Hawaii. He returned to New York… claiming to be drug-free. On August 1, Basquiat died as the result of a heroin overdose. He was 7.

Drug usage was the ultimate, but not the only factor leading the Jean-Michel Basquiat's death. He will forever be known as a landmark artist of the 0th Century. His life was a classic tragedy, but his art will live on forever.

The initial population of the island of Nfld came as a result of the fishery. Organized attempts to populate the island but a few scattered souls remained each year and eventually the island's population grew.

Migratory Fisherman

I leave England on the journey to Newfounland in early March, and in some years in the middle of April. This is due to the weather which must be just right for the often dangerous crossing of the Atlantic. We land on the northern or eastern areas of the island four weeks later, although some years it has taken us up to six weeks to make the crossing. The ship is crewed by other poor laborers like myself who have made the trip several times before, but also among the crew are young teenage boys on their first trip to the island. They will mainly stay ashore and cure the fish we catch.

Before we can go fishing, however, we must find a safe harbour close to the fishing grounds, where there is also sufficient forest from which we can get the material to build our flakes and stages, along with every other structure we need, such as the cookhouse. We must also make sure that there is enough flat land where we can cure our fish, if not we will have to clear some. This work can usually take 6 or 8 weeks to do before we can go fishing.

When we finally are ready to fish we are placed in smaller boats, maybe 16 to 0 feet in length, along with or other men. We begin fishing with our hand-lines at dawn and continue until our boats are full or just before the sun sets. We then land our catch and the shore crew, usually the same number as those aboard the boats split and clean the fish and lightly salt it, then pack it away until the morning when it has to be placed on the flakes to dry. We grab our supper and go to bed so that we can rest and repeat the same thing tomorrow. Only more months of this and we will be heading home.

This is due to the weather which must be just right for the often dangerous crossing of the Atlantic. We land on the northern or eastern areas of the island four weeks later, although some years it has taken us up to six weeks to make the crossing. Unlike the others aboard I am not a hired hand, but rather my own boss. I have paid for myself and my small crew's ( or other men) voyage across and already have my boat and supplies there, awaiting my arrival. I hope no damage has come to it or else I'll have to spend the first month repairing it. Quite often the Indians or those pesky settlers have destroyed my gear.

Once we get to the island there will be some preparation for us to do before we begin fishing. We must rebuild our flakes, and at times even our stages, as well as do repair on the shack which will be our home for the next five months. I will sell our catch to the trade ships that come up from the Mediterranean or from jolly old England.

Settler

I worried a few years ago when I moved my family to this rugged place. Back then I thought that I could make a decent living and return my family back to jolly old England before I died. Now I don't know if that is possible. I figured I would at least do better then when I use to come here and fish on those migratory boats. At least I own a fair sized piece of land, but it is awfully lonely here, especially during the long winter months, when there are only a few other families here.

I own my own boat and trade the fish I catch to the trading ships that come from England and the American colonies. But this fishing is hard work and the wife and family has got to be helping me at it all day long, they don't get much rest. In the winter we survives on the fish I manages to catch and the few vegetable we have left from our small garden. I go into the woods and cut all the firewood I need and I also cut some other logs in hopes that the migratory fishermen will trade me for them next spring. I also does a bit of hunting to supplement our diet of fish, which can lose its taste after you eat it all year round.

The migratory fishermen aren't too bad, since they trades me a great deal of goods that I can use each year, but they think they owns the land. So while they are gone back to England I am going to move my stage and flakes closer to the shoreline. There's sure to be a fuss about this, because it happens every year, between us few that stays here and them. I can't wait until I goes back home, but I guess now that this is only a dream and I'll never see my homeland again.

Parking Lot Controversy

Campus Issues are common at many colleges. At Monmouth University, one main concern is parking. Many people try to resolve the issues, but these problems still occur. Students know that there are not enough parking spaces on campus, and to get to their classes, takes longer to walk than to drive. One solution is that something should be done with the parking lot. The parking lot should be made bigger for those who live on campus or the commuter lot should be split in half. If the commuter lot was split in half, then half would be for the commuters and half would be for the residents.

Many people pay an enormous amount of money to attend Monmouth University. Students should be able to park closer to classes. It is not fair for students to walk in the freezing cold weather. Commuters only walk from the parking lot to their classroom. When residents walk to their classes, it takes about ten or fifteen minutes. They walk in the cold weather and then walk into a warm building. This results in the students getting sick. When there is rainy weather, many students do not go to their classes, because they do not want to walk in the rain. By making a bigger lot closer to classes, or splitting the commuter lot, students will attend many more classes. If the commuter lot was split, then there would have to be another lot for the rest of the commuters. Therefore, the residents have a chance to park closer to classes.

Another reason why a bigger lot or splitting the commuter lot should be put into effect is the commuter students obliviously do not have to drive very far to get to school. Why do they get to park closer? There are some complaints that people are parking near the dorms that should not be, but not nearly as much as students parking over near their classes. The commuters do not pay as much money as residents students do to attend school. It would be a lot easier if residents were able to drive to classes. If there were another lot, or the lot were bigger, then students would make it to class on time. Many students do not even bother to go to class if they are late. If the commuter lot was split in half, then half would be residents and half would be commuters. It would give a chance for many residents to drive to the other side of campus, which they do not have that opportunity for now. It is not fair when a resident student has class until 1000 p.m or a student is in the gym and has to walk back late at night in the freezing cold weather. It is not safe. It is too cold in the middle of winter. This winter has been an exceptionally cold winter. Building a bigger lot where resident students could park would be a great thing for many students.

As of now, many of the resident students try to park in the commuter lot closer to their classes. Although they are getting tickets, they continue to park there to get away from walking in the cold, rain, and snow. Building another bigger lot or splitting the lot in half, would help the Monmouth University Police. They patrol the lots and have to write an enormous amount of tickets because students are parking in the wrong place. It would be an easier job for them. If there were spots for the resident students, the amount of tickets that were written would be reduced.

Campus Issues are problems that colleges experience every year. A problem that occurs every year is with the parking lot. Many students feel that it is not fair to have to walk back and forth to classes in weather conditions. One proposal is to build another bigger parking lot or split the commuter lot in half. Doing such things would resolve the issue of parking on campus.

Viola of Twelfth Night

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Viola of Twelfth Night, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Viola of Twelfth Night paper at affordable prices! Viola is the main character from the Shakespearean play Twelfth Night. Viola has many characteristics that add complexity to her character. In the following, three of her many characteristics are mentioned and described, her physical characteristics, her emotional characteristics, and finally her moral.

At the beginning of the play, we meet Viola. She is shipwrecked off of the coast of Illyria. She talks to the captain of the ship. When she asks he tells her that Illyria is run by a noble Duke By the name of Orsino. Viola decides to disguise herself as a man so she can work for the Duke.

"Conceal me what I am and be my aid

For such disguise as haply shall become.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Viola of Twelfth Night The form of my intent I'll serve this Duke".

[Act 1 sc. (II) l. 5-55]

In the quote, Viola is asking the Captain to help disguise her feminine appearance and help her to act like a man. If she can accomplish this she will be able to serve the Duke. This is a very interesting point in the play because it is when she gets into the disguise and it starts all of the confusion that goes on between the characters during the play. Her physical characteristics defiantly make Viola a complex person, because with her disguise she looks like a man, but is actually a woman.

In the play Viola expresses a lot of emotions. One of the emotions she goes through is fear. When this happens Viola (disguised as Cesario) has just been to visit Olivia to try to convince her to love Orsino. She gets a ring from Malvolio who says that Olivia claims that it is hers. Viola realizes that Olivia has fallen in love with her. This is not good because Viola is supposed to get Olivia to fall in love with Orsino.

"O time; thou must untangle this, not I

It is to hard a knot for me t'untie".

[Act sc.(II) l. -40]

In the quote the knot she refers to is the situation that has started because of her disguise, Orsino loves Olivia, Viola loves Orsino (but can not express that love because of her manly appearance), and now Olivia loves Viola (but Olivia thinks Viola is Cesario). Viola shows the emotion of fear in the quote because she is afraid of the outcome of what she started might be, and she thinks that she can not change it and only time will tell. Emotions add complexity to any character in any story, fear makes Viola complex because now she is scared and fear can cause people to mess up or give something away (in this case Viola may give away her true identity).

During the play Viola goes through a major moral conflict in which she must choose to either help Orsino to get the woman he loves even though she loves him, or she could choose to take a chance and show Orsino that she is a woman and hope that he will fall in love with her.

"To woo your lady. [Aside] Yet, a barful strife!

Whoe'er I woo myself would be his wife".

[Act 1 sc. (IV) l. 4-4]

In the quote Viola is confessing her love for Orsino. She does not know what the right thing to do is. Any one can see the conflict here, and nobody would ever want to go through this. This adds a complexity to Viola's character because she now has a choice, she could choose the wrong thing and end up in a lot of trouble.

Viola's Physical, Emotional and Moral characteristics defiantly make Viola a complex person. Her appearance confuses people into thinking she is a man, her emotion of fear could make her give away her disguise, and the moral decision she has to make could get her into a lot of trouble if she does not choose the right thing. Shakespeare was a very creative man, in his plays he made his characters very complex, in the case of Twelfth Night, the most complex of his character line-up is defiantly Viola.

I have read "The Eagle of The Ninth" by Rosemary Sutcliff .Roman history has always had a particular appeal to me , especially the mysteries of its era . When I discovered that it was about a lost Roman Army - The Ninth Legion , i was pleasantly surprised not only from the historical point of view , but the fact that the story would not be set in some unfamiliar , far off foreign country but in Northern England and Scotland . Some parts of the novel are in lands only a stone's throw away from our school .

The main character in this novel is a quite young and in-experienced soldier named Marcus Aquila . He is the son of a high ranking Roman soldier , who was second in command of the Ninth Legion .

Throughout the novel , Marcus has shown that he has a very ambitious and determined . He seems to have his entire life , from the next day till his retirement all planned out .

" ... one day , when he had finished with the Eagles when he had made an honourable name and become prefect of his Egyptian Legion , he would go home to the Etruscan hills , and perhaps buy back the old farm ... to retire to ."

Order custom research paper on Eagle of The Ninth

However , even though all of this ambition does appear to be a healthy attitude , it often leaves him rather disappointed when he cannot progress or improve himself any further. This happened after a serious injury after which he was no longer able to be a soldier . This left him very depressed . Marcus achieved the rank of Second Cohort , which left him in charge of a fort on a northern frontier near Carlisle . Unfortunately , not long after he arrived it was attacked by the native tribes . He was very badly injured in the attack , and was unable to walk for weeks .

" Marcus lay in his bed for hours on end , staring at the ceiling and listening to the wind blowing through the window , but the pain in his leg was drowned out for the anguish of his lost career was too great ."

In this way the author compels you to pity Marcus , in one night , in a split -second , he had lost all that had been dear to him .However , Marcus had not lost all of his ambitions and dreams , his prime motivation was to find the eagle of his father's lost legion , and despite this huge set back , he is still determined to go north of Hadrian's Wall to retrieve it and restore the Ninth Legion . In a sense that takes a lot of bravery to do that , considering an entire legion was lost going north , and he is only bringing his slave along with him . He has already shown his bravery in the way he conducted himself on the battlefield , in more ways than one . The best example of his bravery in the novel is when him and Esca are confronted by the tribe members who , at that time , knew they had stolen the eagle . Marcus wittingly manages to dissuade them by lying point blankly to their faces . Fortunately for him and his companion Esca , his lies worked , and soon the tribe members were no longer pursuing them .

"We do not have your worthless idol , but if you are so sure we have stolen the Red Crests' god , you have but to search our gear , and you will surely find it . Search , then ."

Another aspect of Marcus' character is his compassion , and the way he can begin to trust a person quickly and with ease . This appears to happen on more than one occasion , but in a couple . At the beginning of the novel , when he is in command of the fort , he befriends a local tribesman , Cradoc , and goes hunting regularly with him . However , during the night of the attack , Marcus sees the hunter and is obviously very disappointed in him for betraying his trust .

"Marcus looked up , and met the cold , grey eyes of Cradoc and suddenly ceased to move.......his eyes pin-pricked in shock ."

Marcus display again , that he is a character who can be very easily befriended . During his recovery time , he meets a girl called Cottia . The girl hates Roman rule in Britain , and she hates the constrictions that Roman rule brings upon her people . Marcus' very roots are in these principals that she hates , and yet they form such a good friendship .

"'Can i come and see you again Marcus?'

‘Of course you can .' "

However the most profound example of Marcus' friendly character is found when Marcus employs a slave who lost an arena game . Marcus , saved the slave's , Esca's , life , although Roman tradition would have him killed for it . After a few days together , they both find each other compatible , and make good friends . Esca is always there to help Marcus with the healing of his leg , and to offer very helpful advice . A very shocking and surprising moment comes in the novel when Marcus states to Esca that when they return from Scotland with the eagle , he would grant Esca his freedom . By anyone's standards , this is a very compassionate thing to do .

"After we return home with the eagle , i shall grant you your freedom , Esca ."

The overall impression of Marcus' character is a honourable one . From the beginning of the book , he can come across as being rather arrogant , and doing only what is in his best interests , personally , i even thought he was a selfish person . However when you progress further into the novel , you discover that this is not the case. You discover that he is a caring , deep and passionate person . His crusade for his father's eagle and to find out what happened to the Ninth defines Marcus as someone with unbelievable sense and courage .
