-Individual freedom and power state has on individual

-rational justification of freedom of individual in opposition to state and society

-impose unlimited control thus defence of the rights of the individual against state

Mill views of the legitimate powers of the state are derived from his ideas about the importance of individual freedom and powers, that society should have over individual.

-outline mill harm principle/also know as liberty principle

which states "the sole end for which mankind can be warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any members, is self-protection".

Aim was to set limits, which ruler should exercise over community; this limitations =liberty

No restrictions should be placed purely on account of tradition, authority.

Mill attempts to draw distinction between actions, which are self-regarding and those, which affect other,

-state should only interfere when actions are affecting others in harmful way/serious harm enough to violate another's RIGHTS .(minor form of causing harm to others can be controlled by the public opinion). JC REES maintained that mill uses the notion of interests rather than effect.

Then as Macbeth and a servant enter the courtyard Banquo draws his sword would you do this in your friend's castle? - They talk about Macbeth still being awake and Banquo asks if he's (Macbeth) been having nightmares. Banquo says he dreamt about the three witches the previous night and how some of the predictions hav come true for Macbeth. Macbeth then says he hasn't thought about them (the witches) -yet we know that Macbeth has done nothing but think about them- and suggests that they (himself and Banquo) make time to talk about business and then tries to make Banquo say that he will support him (Macbeth) in the future, Banquo's response to this is

"So I lose none

In seaking to augment it, but still keep

My bosom franchised and allegiance clear,

I shall be counselled"

-Meaning he will act honourably. - Then Banquo and Fleance leave the courtyard.

Macbeth tells his servant to tell his wife to get his drink ready and when it is to ring a bell which we know is a pre-arranged signal to tell Macbeth that the guards have been drugged and are oblivious to what is about to happen- the servant exit to tell Lady Macbeth this.

Macbeth sees a hallucination of a dagger infront of him, he tries to clutch it, he then realises that its just an image and then draws his own dagger, the hallucination still appears to be there and it seems to be leading Macbeth to Duncan's room.

Danger in Disguise

The lavish house stood isolated on the mountain with the closest neighbours about a kilometre away. A wary woman, Mary, and her newborn baby occupied the mansion while her avaricious husband was on one of his usual business trips.

After rocking her child to sleep, the young mother decided to relieve her exhaustion by sinking into a therapeutic Jacuzzi. After an hour of relaxation, she decided to go to bed. As she vacated the bathroom and fastened her bathrobe, she sensed and unwanted presence overwhelm her remote household.

Mary had always been cautious and some-what paranoid. The sound of footsteps followed by a loud thud was all it took to put her into a state of panic. She instantly reached for her husband's rifle. She had company.

Order Custom Essay on DAnger in Disguise

Her heart was in her throat and her adrenaline level was peaking. She tiptoed from room to room in search of the prowler. When the terrified woman approached the kitchen, the sound of the footsteps loudened.

Not knowing what to do, she crept behind the kitchen door and watched to see if anyone passed by. Nothing. The footsteps had stopped. She shuffled through the passage and there was no one in sight. No more noises. She hesitantly decided to retire but kept the rifle in close reach.

Mary switched off her room light and tried to get some sleep with the hope that everything will be fine by the morning. After fifteen minutes of tossing and turning, she heard the rambling noises again. Only this time it was closer. Much closer. The intruder was in the room!

Trembling, she silently grabbed the rifle, turned on the lights and prepared to face her intruder. Mary examined her surroundings but there was no sign of life. At this stage she started to believe that the noises were an act of her imagination. Calming down slightly, she attempted to relax, but no sooner than she shut her eyes, she heard heavy breathing break the silence.

Agitated, she sprang out of bed, took the rifle and followed the sound of the breathing. She walked towards her wardrobe and could see the back of a dark, masculine figure fill the doorway. Mary noticed that the man was wearing a ripped skipper and scruffy jeans. This gave her the impression that he was after their wealth.

The man slowly turned around and Mary was face to face with the intruder. Not acknowledging the man's profile, she suddenly fired the rifle and shot him dead. Terrified but relieved, she found the courage to view her victim. To her horror it was her brother-in-law.

Only then she recalled her husband informing her that he had given his brother a house key and he would be coming to check on them. She realised that her brother-in-law must have been returning from one of his building jobs and decided to see on them.

In shock and denial, she felt her emotions spin completely out of control. She was horrified at the fact that she killed another human being and even more so because it was her husband's brother. Thoughts of her husband's reaction when he hears about the death of his only brother stirred through her mind. He would be furious.

In her state, she did not even consider her baby's life when she decided to take her own. She could not face her husband and could not live with herself knowing that she murdered an innocent man.

The morning after the two deaths, Mary's husband, Zak, had returned home. The scene was a mess. Blood seeped along the floor staining the plush carpets. The sight of the two dead bodies and the loud cried of his child was enough to make him weep.

Extremely devastated, he called the police. The reality of the situation had not sunk in, however, he felt a sense of guilt overwhelm him, as he should have been there for his wife and child. For months, the police tried to uncover the mystery of the two deaths but were unsuccessful.

Sorrowful and regretful, Zak cared for his child and cut back on his working hours to spend quality time with his son in order to make up for the family life that he had missed out on.

In Carver's short story, the characters discuss the ups and downs of love. Although Mel seems to dominate the conversation, the four characters, Mel, Terri, Nick, and Laura can all relate to their past failed relationships. The couples discuss many reasons as to why love can fail mistaking violence for love, creating barriers or safety nets, and carrying the baggage of past relationships into current ones. Terry talks about her previous relationship with a man named Ed. She was a target for his abuse, both verbal and physical. As though she was blind to the mistreatment she was receiving, Terri was convinced of his love for her. The others are in agreement that it was not a healthy relationship.

Mel spoke extensively about wanting to come back in a previous life as a knight, wearing armor. Mel states, You were pretty safe wearing all that armor and "But what I liked about knights, besides their ladies, was that they had that suit of armor, you know, and they couldn't get hurt very easy." This image of armor is a barrier that Mel wants, as protect against the emotional draining that comes with love. Nick tries to offer Mel a difference of opinion when he says, "But sometimes they suffocated in all that armor, Mel. Theyd even have heart attacks if it got too hot and they were too tired and worn out." Mel also seems to also use alcohol as a barrier. Terri says, "Mel, why dont you take a pill?" Mel shook his head as replies, "Ive taken everything there is."

The characters in Carver's story recall their previous relationships. Each of them can relate to divorce, heartache and what they think of the love that had existed at one time. They try to define what love is. However, I do not feel as if they even know the meaning themselves. Each of the characters has their own ideas, however none of them are superior.

However, one of her most famous speeches was, "Ain't I a Woman?" which focused on the rights and equality of black and whites women in the United States. Her deep voice, stern confidence, and strong faith in God all contributed to her success as a great speaker. She dedicated her life to her belief that men and women should have equal rights.

Baumfree was born a slave in Ulster County, New York. She was freed in 188 under a New York law that banned slavery. She was called to the ministry to preach in 184, which is also around the time she changed her name to Sojourner Truth. Her early speeches were based on the belief that people best show love for God by love and concern for others. She soon began directing her speeches toward the abolition of slavery (The African American Journey).

Advantages & Disadvantages of Sales Promotions

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Advantages & Disadvantages of Sales Promotions, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Advantages & Disadvantages of Sales Promotions paper at affordable prices! The biggest advantage of sales promotions are that, if they are done correctly, they can

stimulate and increase consumer purchases and develop or improve retailer or

middlemen efforts to stock and sell a product. A sales promotion can be coupons, gifts,

samples, in-store promotions, contests or sponsorship of special events (sporting events,

fairs, etc.) In markets where consumers may be hard to reach through regular

advertising channels, a sales promotion is necessary and very effective. Sales

promotions are generally seen as fun and can have long-lasting ifavorable mpressions on

consumers.

In addition, another advantage is that sales promotion activities may be narrowly

targeted to consumers and/or offered for only a short time before being dropped or

replaced with more permanent efforts. This flexible nature of sales promotions makes

them ideal for a marketing campaign tailored to fit local customs and circumstances. For

example, Philip Morris, British American Tobacco, & R.J. Reynolds competed in the

Taiwanese market by handing out free cigarettes, a practice not utilized in the U.S.

market. Both Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds built market share by offering Korean

consumers free cigarette lighters and desk diaries with the firms logos in return for

cigarette purchases.

One of the disadvantages is that the success of a sales promotion may depend on local

adaptation. Since cultures have an impact on any type of advertising/promotion,

marketers must ensure that the type of sales promotion they have selected for a

particular country is not a prohibited activity. Since some local laws do not permit free

gifts, coupons, premiums or discounts, marketers must thoroughly research the countries

before undertaking sales promotions. Another disadvantage may be the cost of sales

promotions. The up-front costs may be high; however successful sales promotions can

reap rewards many times over in the long run. Companies just need to be able to make

the investment in the up-front costs.

Please note that this sample paper on Advantages & Disadvantages of Sales Promotions is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. The following is poem that was written by an Alabama student before being identified and receiving services for ADD.

Teenage Empty

The complications of life are closing in,

Sitting here in the dark room.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Attention Deficit Disorder

Nobody can change what happend back then,

Sweeping away my life like a broom.

We see what weve done and truly regret,

Knowing we cant go back to before.

We try so hard but cant seem to forget,

Losing when you have no more.

We tried to laugh and we really cried,

We act toward others like nothing is wrong.

The pain is ripping on the inside,

To hide our feeling for much too long.

So off into the place called alone,

Weve been there already for years.

Where we are going is still unknown,

For we sit and drown in our tears.

Im going to discuss a very real but usually overlooked disorder of children called Attention Deficit Disorder, commonly known as ADD.

I want you to try and imagine two ditches--each ten feet long and two feet deep and exactly alike. One ditch was dug with a shovel and one was dug with a spoon. You point at the two ditches and say, Dont tell me you cant dig that ditch with a spoon. Theres the proof. You could do it if only you would! And, youre right. It can be done, but youve overlooked one small detail. How much time and effort it took to dig that ditch with a spoon.

This is like comparing a child with ADD to an average child. A child with ADD can do the work, but they have to push themselves twice as hard; thus leading to low self-esteem from years of failure.

ADD is a chemical imbalance affecting about 5 percent of all schoolage children and about percent of all adults. The symptoms are inattention, distractibility, trouble following directions, hyperactivity, mood swings, acting before thinking, losing things easily, depession, daydreaming a great deal, and acting meek or not speaking out in self-defence.

However, ADD is an hereditary physiological problem that can be treated successfully through medication. The most widely prescribed medications are Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Cylert (stimulants given for hyperactivity). Tofranil or Imipramine are the medications given to children who have reached puberty and to adults.

The best treatment for ADD is education. Learning about ADD and supporting yur child, not ridiculing him/her. Counseling for both child and parent is available. Parent training, to learn understanding and help in not denying the problem, is essential. Parents need to learn about the medication and the side-effects. Remember, medication is not a cure, only a help-mate.

Medication brings the brain to acceptable levels by increasing the production of a neurotransmitter in the brain, thus increasing attention. This enables the student to learn, but the school system has to do its part. Trained teachers are employed at each school to help children with learning problems. Parent/school collaboration is very important. Parents need to get involved and stay involved. Help educate the teachers, if necessary.

ADD is a real problem and it can be devastating to a child. These children are often misunderstood. They are quiet often made to feel dumb and are thought to be lazy or just not trying. In most cases, this is not true. The public schools are learning more and more about ADD. If your child has ADD, work with the school system. They are there to help. They are not your enemy.

As parents, we have only a few goals for our childern; That they learn how to learn, how to communicate, how to concentrate, how to get information, how to feel deeply, and how to act wisely. Many people feel that parents of children with disabilities or problems have unrealistic expectations for their children. But like any parent, we only expect our children to be all that they can be.

Barbara Sanders.

I am writing to formally register our concerns regarding monetary loss of revenue suffered by this Club via the recent installation of your product ‘King Of The Nile'. Pittwater RSL Club has always been a strong and supportive customer of Aristocrat Leisure Industries. This support is evident by Aristocrat holding 87% of the Cub's total poker machine installation. I must at this stage point out that, we are more than pleased with their overall performance and subsequently, an look forward to a similar partnership in the future.

However, it is a matter of serious concern to us the amount of lost predicted revenue resulting from inaccurate information regarding this product. On Tuesday March 18, 00 this concern was verbally taken up with both yourself and our sales representative Steve Law. Your immediate action to reticify future similar results was greatly appreciated. I am aware that this option of change was only made possible by an approval being granted by the LAB on the day of the conversation. Further acknowledgement that prior warning of the uncertainty of the performance was given by Steve Law, however there was only ever mention of 1 or % variation. The tables attached to this report clearly demonstrates that the loss was far greater, averaging 5.1% for a period of months with the month of February resulting in a difference of 6.5%. In monetary terms this equates to an overall loss of $17,8.65 against the exceptive return for the duration of the machines installation.

The attached analysis concludes that the expected carding concern was far greater than predicted. Pittwater RSL Club has always operated their machines with a high player return. The minimum return to player being % up to a maximum of 6% for $1 and specialized machines. The player return for the ‘King Of The Nile' had a known unpredictability however the extent of this variance was unknown or not informed. The product was purchased with the unstated faith that suitable testing had taken place by Aristocrat and until a more certain option had been approved the Club was willing to run the machines 1 or % above carding.

As such, I am writing to request possible monetary compensation or the revenue lost by Pittwater RS Cub be given consideration

Please do not hesitate to contact me personally, so I can provide further information on this matter.

1. During the first act, the impression of Macbeth is that he is the "bravest" soldier, and the honorable Thane of Glamis. We are told that his rank and nobility are of great value, and he seems to be fit for his status. Unfortunately when he appears, this perception is altered. Macbeth seems to have a greedy impatient ambition. The original impression of Macbeth is that he is loyal and worthy of being honored by the king. It is almost ironic, because he ends up being a traitor, and murders the Duncan himself. Macbeth's character has been altered after his encounter with the Three Weird Sisters. It seems as though once their (witches) first prophesy (Macbeth being Thane of Cawdor) comes true, dark horrid images of murdering Duncan begin to cloud his mind. Even though Macbeth tries to remain loyal to the King, his greed and desire for power lead him to murder the King.

. The first act of the play ties Macbeth and Banquo together through battle. Both are serving under King Duncan. They stand together against an attack by the Norwegian king, and win another victory. Macbeth and Banquo also have alike situations because of their encounter with the Three Weird Sisters. Since both Macbeth and Banquo have this connection with the Three Weird Sisters, they question there morals and common knowledge about things, which causes them (mainly Macbeth) to do things which originally seemed out of his character. However, Macbeth tends to believe everything the witch's prophesize. Banquo on the other hand does not become so obsessed with the witches have to say, and he tries to warn Macbeth that "evil only speaks half truths to stir up trouble". Macbeth tells himself that he will not take evil action against the king, unless fate has it to be. Banquo knows that evil never speaks truth, and lets his common sense overpower the witches prophesies, and remains loyal to Duncan.

. Lady Macbeth reveals her husband's character when she speaks of how he will deal with the murder. When Lady Macbeth scolds her husband, often times one thinks that she is just being mean, but she actually reveals certain flaws in Macbeth's character which cause his downfall in the end of this tragedy. Lady Macbeth consistently points out that Macbeth lacks the ambition to actually obtain what he desires. She tells Macbeth that he needs to be like a serpent with a flowering face. By this she means that he needs to be deceitful and like herself, morally courageous and daring. Lady Macbeth is an image of how Macbeth becomes after he murders Banquo and continues to use injustice to keep his crown and place in Scotland. Macbeth eventually lets go of all his morals which had originally kept him from murdering Duncan, and turns into an unmoral, ruthless King. He seems to develop an ambition for wanting to stay King; he has no other way to stay in power except to kill those who oppose a threat to him.

4. In the first act of the tragedy, Macbeth seems to be a glorified hero who is loyal to his king. Unfortunately, his good deeds and morals are attacked by the witches. In his moment of glory the witches deceive him, by telling him that he can be more powerful than what he is now, but he would need to carry out the deeds necessary to get him to that point (by this they mean killing Duncan). This is when the darkness of Macbeth's character is brought to the reader's attention. Instead of listening to his conscience, Macbeth lets his mind put out of the way any worries of consequences which would put him in danger, and acts on false prophesies which the witches and Lady Macbeth have persuaded him to listen too. Duncan on the other hand seems to bring a pure and noble mood into the tragedy. He trusts men, and is very gracious to those who are loyal to him. He is a fair King who rules with justice. When he is murdered, Scotland seems to plummet into darkness and sadness. The light dies (Duncan) and the darkness takes over (Macbeth).

Human cloning

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on human cloning. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in human cloning, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your human cloning paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! A total ban should be placed on human reproductive cloning aimed at creating a child.

This comment is backed by a National Academies report that considered only the scientific and medical aspects of this emotional and controversial issue. Based on experience with reproductive cloning in animals, the report concluded that human reproductive cloning would be dangerous both for the woman and the newborn and would more than likely fail. The study panel did not address the issue of whether human reproductive cloning, even if found to be medically safe, would be morally and ethically acceptable to individuals and society.

Currently, there are five species of animals that have been used in reproductive cloning studies, these are sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and mice. It is from the tests on these animals that the problems associated with cloning can be clearly identified. Data on the reproductive cloning of animals demonstrates that only a small percentage of attempts are successful with many of the clones actually dieing before birth. This occurs at all stages of gestation and those that survive frequently encounter severe birth defects. Newborn clones are often abnormal or die soon after birth. In addition, the female carrying the cloned unborn face serious risks, including death, from cloning-related complications.

The proposed ban on human cloning should be reviewed within five years. The ban should only be reconsidered if new scientific evidence indicates that the procedure is safe and effective and if all the social, religious, and ethical issues suggest that reconsideration is warranted.

Cheap University Papers on human cloning

Enforcing a ban that carries major penalties would be the best way to discourage human reproductive cloning experiments in both the public and private sectors. A voluntary measure is unlikely to be effective, because many of the technologies needed to accomplish human reproductive cloning, are widely accessible in private fertility clinics and other organisations that are not subject to federal regulations.

There are many arguments for and against human reproductive cloning. I along with most of society however, believe that it is both ethically, morally and socially incorrect. A ban on cloning should be put in place and strict penalties enforced on anyone breaking this ban.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is an engrossing tale told in different voices. It metes out to us pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that come together to show a community of individuals who lived in Depression era Alabama. They exist in an oasis of compassion and tolerance centered on the Whistle Stop Cafe and its two owners, the wild and wilful Idgie and the sweet, centered Ruth.

We see this community back and forth in time and through repeated tragedy, with a strong mix of humour in their daily lives. Its people deal with tough issues - prejudice and discrimination, abuse of women, maiming and murder - with wisdom and pragmatic justice. The picture evolves slowly through the eyes of Evelyn Couch, a middle aged wife and mother, who has always done what was expected of her and lost herself in the process.

Depressed and overweight, Evelyn encounters Ninny Threadgoode while visiting her mother-in-law at an old folks home in the 180s. At first she listens politely but soon looks forward to regular accounts of life and times at the Whistle Stop Cafe. These reminiscences are interspersed with third person accounts of the same events and with delightful tidbits from the Whistle Stop weekly bulletin, that make the characters feel like neighbours.

Evelyn is changed and empowered by Ninnys stories of Idgies exploits. At first, while fighting the hormonal surges of menopause, she develops a fantasy life as Towanda the Avenger (some of whose ideas have a definite appeal) but Evelyn eventually achieves a balance and a strong gratitude towards Ninny, who treats her as a daughter. This is one of the best messages of the book, what the old and seemingly powerless still have to offer us.

Classical Greece falls into three categories. The first category lasted from 47 B.C. to 404 B.C. This key time period excelled in Athenian power, and made cultural advancements in Athens. Myron and Phidias were well known sculptors, and created the classical form of realism and idealism. Music impacted this time period, and played an important role. Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripides were well-known artists, and created masterpieces. In 44 B.C the Athenian Acropolis was beginning to build, while being planned by Pedicles. Pedicles was a strong ambitious Athenian leader. The Parthenon and the Propylaea were completed, which created drama between Corinth and Sparta.

In 41 B.C., the Peloponnesian war began. Athens and a few of their allies were against the remaining of the Greek world. Pedicles died from a plague that spread like wildfire in 4 B.C. Without Pedicles strict leadership, the Athenians started a campaign against Sicily. Eventually the Athenians were overpowered and surrendered to the Spartans in 404 B.C.

The war in Athens affected the cultural developments. In the fifth century, sculpture and vase painting show funerary subjects and most of the art reflected dark thoughts. As of the theatre, Euripides plays reflected the horrors of war, and Aristophanes blames the turmoil on the political leaders. Thucyclides wrote History

The second key time period lasted from 404 to B.C. Athens no longer had control over Greece, in fact, there was no successor at all. This was the first example in Western tradition to express female nudity. Aristotle wrote on political theory as well as various other topics.

Philip II ruled the Northern Kingdom of Macedon. In 5 B.C. Philip became successful in uniting Greece and Corinth. The only important remaining city was Sparta. Alexander took over Philips reigning after he was assassinated in 6 B.C. Alexander set out campaigns across Asia which led him to India. In B.C. Alexander died of fever on the long journey home.

The Reality of "Miss Brill"

In "Miss Brill," Katherine Mansfield introduces us to a woman who lives in her own world rather than come face to face with the reality that she is poor, alone, and old. Today is special to Miss Brill, the beginning of the autumn "Season has begun" (18) and "the band [sounds] louder and [more cheerful]" (18). Miss Brill goes to the park every Sunday and listens to other people's conversations. She talks about old people not including her and about how they look as if they did not come out often. "They were odd, silent nearly old, and from the way they stared they looked as though they'd just come form dark little rooms or even--even cupboards" (18-184). While sitting there and looking around she thinks that she is an important part of a theater company. "They were all on stage. They weren't only the audience, not only looking on; they were acting. Even she had a part and came every Sunday. No doubt somebody would have noticed if she hadn't been there she was part of the performance after all" (185). For how long can Miss Brill pretend rather that seeing her own reality?

Miss Brill is a poor, old woman who comes to the park because she has no money to go anywhere else; she comes "Sunday after Sunday" (18). On this particular Sunday she decided to put on her old fur. Since she cannot afford a new one, she plans on putting wax on it "when it becomes absolutely necessary" (18). After her stay in the park, Miss Brill usually only buys herself a piece of honey cake, and if she is lucky and almond might in the slice.

Help with essay on The Reality of "Miss Brill" Every Sunday she comes to the park like clockwork because she has no one to be with and is lonely. "[Miss Brill] made such a point of starting from home at just the same time each week" (185). Miss Brill, sitting in her special seat, listens to other people's conversations and pretends to be them because she appears to have no family or friends. " She had become quite expert, she thought, at listening as though she didn't listen, at sitting in other people's lives just for a minute while they talked round her" (18). She may even feel shamed that all she does in Sunday is spent her afternoon in the park. "She had a quite a queer, shy feeling at telling her English pupils how she spent her Sunday afternoons" (185).

Miss Brill does not consider herself old she talks about the other people, "the old people sat on the bench, still as statues" (18). She calls her seat "special" because she has been coming to that place for a very long time. Miss Brill enjoys her time spent in the park even if there are not always interesting things to see and hear. "Last Sunday, too, hadn't been interesting as usual" (18) In her arms and hands she feels a tingling of old age but she discharges that comes from walking. Perhaps when Miss Brill sees the scene of the woman of the ermine toque it touches a core that she too was once a young woman, and like this woman she too had bought her fur "when her hair was yellow. Now everything, her hair, her face, even her eyes, [were] the same color as the shabby [fur]" (184). Even though Miss Brill never acknowledges being old, she is mentioned in the the story by the young boy as being old. "Because of that stupid of thing at the end there?" (186).

In the end Miss Brill realizes how her life truly is, when the young boy call her old and says that no one wants her there why does she come to the park. The Young boy says, "Why does she come she come here at all--who want her? Why doesn't she keep her silly old mug at home?" (186). This statement even changes the usual routine of Miss Brill because this Sunday on her way home she did not go to the baker to buy her usual piece of honey cake. Miss Brill finally sees that she is like those old people who looked like they came out of a cupboard. Perhaps she would have been better off in continuing in her fantasy world instead of feeling the pain of reality.

The basic premise of this model is that more is better, meaning that more people inhabiting the planet will directly lead to an improved living environment for them all. More people will provide more intellect, hence more inventions and scientific break-throughs, which will by far outweigh any negative consequences of the sheer number of people in apparent competition with each other.

Even if I shared Mr. Simon's position on the outlook of future population growth, I do not think that he presents a scientifically sound argument to support his view. The most notable flaws of his already weak argument are

Buy custom Environmental Crisis term paperIn spite of the fact that he presents quotes and statistical data from other mentioned sources, none of them are referenced. His position immediately loses credibility in the absence of such important links;

The lack of reference material also makes it very hard to distinguish between apparent facts and Mr. Simon's own opinions;

The fact that Mr. Simon is an economist by training adds further heavy bias to his position, especially when many economists like to take the position that the market is sufficient and strong enough to deal with all problems, including environmental ones. Mr. Simon may not be the ultimate authority on the issue of population growth as his views are business oriented; and

He does not even attempt to present the position of environmentalists, scientists, or population growth experts, which would enable the reader to make his or her own judgement of the situation. Such a complex issue as the one being discussed cannot be solved simply by the market. As we know, everything on the planet is interconnected one way or another, hence solutions are a combination of many inter-related factors.

In summary, Mr. Simon's essay is presented in such a way that it appears to convey to the reader that his position, and a very subjective one at that, is absolutely correct. I think that this bears a hint of arrogance. He does not give the reader all the facts or even sufficient references to backup his own position. He takes the liberty of discarding the other side's position, which is not good science. Every situation has two sides and the reader should have insight to both. A credible article would have presented both sides of the argument and allowed the reader to draw his own conclusions.

To be, or not to be is probably the most famous line in all of literature. What does it mean? Why are these words, and the words that follow, special?

One reason is that they are a stunning example of Shakespeares ability to make his characters seem three-dimensional. The audience senses that there is more to Hamlets words than meets the earthat there is something behind his words that is never spoken. Or, to put it another way, the audience witnesses signs of something within Hamlets mind that even he isnt aware of. Hamlet is a fictional character who seems to possess a subconscious mind. How does Shakespeare manage to accomplish this?

In the first place, Hamlet doesnt talk directly about what hes really talking about. When he questions whether it is better to be, or not to be, the obvious implication is, Should I kill myself? The entire soliloquy strongly suggests that he is toying with suicide and perhaps trying to work up his courage to do it. But at no point does he say that he is in pain or discuss why he wants to kill himself. In fact, he never says I or me in the entire speech. Hes not trying to express himself at all; instead, he poses the question as a matter of philosophical debate. When he claims that everybody would commit suicide if they werent uncertain about the afterlife, it sounds as if hes making an argument to convince an imaginary listener about an abstract point rather than directly addressing how the question applies to him. Now, its perfectly ordinary for characters in plays to say something other than what they mean to other characters (this suggests that they are consciously hiding their true motives), but Hamlet does it when hes talking to himself. This creates the general impression that there are things going on in Hamlets mind that he cant think about directly.

While were on the subject of whats going on inside Hamlets mind, consider his encounter with Ophelia. This conversation is closely watched by Claudius and Polonius and is, in fact, a test. Its supposed to establish whether Hamlets madness stems from his lovesickness over Ophelia. Before we, the audience, see this encounter, we already think we know more than Claudius does we know that Hamlet is only acting crazy, and that hes doing it to hide the fact that hes plotting against (or at least investigating) his uncle. Therefore, it cant be true that hes acting mad because of his love for Ophelia. But witnessing Hamlets encounter with her throws everything we think we know into question.

Does Hamlet mean what he says to Ophelia? He says that he did love her once but that he doesnt love her now. There are several problems with concluding that Hamlet says the opposite of what he means in order to appear crazy. For one thing, if he really does love her, this is unnecessarily self-destructive behavior. Its unnecessary because it doesnt accomplish very much; that is, it doesnt make Claudius suspect him less. His professions of former love make him appear fickle, or emotionally withdrawn, rather than crazy.

Is Hamlet really crazy or just pretending? He announced ahead of time that he was going to act crazy, so its hard to conclude that he (coincidentally) really went mad right after saying so. But his behavior toward Ophelia is both self-destructive and fraught with emotional intensity. It doesnt obviously further his plans. Moreover, his bitterness against Ophelia, and against women in general, resonates with his general discontentedness about the state of the world, the same discontentedness that he expresses when he thinks no one is watching. There is a passionate intensity to his unstable behavior that keeps us from viewing it as fake.

Perhaps it is worthwhile to ask this question if a person in a rational state of mind decides to act as if he is crazy, to abuse the people around him regardless of whether he loves those people or hates them, and to give free expression to all of his most antisocial thoughts, when he starts to carry those actions out, will it even be possible to say at what point he stops pretending to be crazy and starts actually being crazy?

Order your What was the Most Serious Problem Faced byThe Rump of the Long Parliament? paper at affordable prices! After the execution of the King a new form of government was needed and the Rump was the name given to the Parliament who ruled after the execution of the King. Firstly it only consisted of the Member's of Parliament (MPs) who had agreed to the trial and execution of the King and it was also a small part of an elected party, which gave the Rump some legitimacy. Their position was not strong and in 164 they had many problems, as they had much opposition from most political and religious groups in England and abroad.

Pride's purge in December 1648 had done far from guarantee the loyalties of Parliament, but instead served only to raise suspicion against the army, through its use of force against them. In spite of this fear of the army, the rump was very dependent upon them for protection both internal and external. Army mutineers led by Levellers uprisings were soon put down by Cromwell, reducing the political threats towards the Parliament. The rump had been left there to make a change. To create a social and legislative reform. The very reasons that had led to a decade of civil war and political dithering half-heartedness were still evident in the Rump however. As soon as the Rump came to power its most obvious threats came from problems abroad.

Disputably the Rump's biggest threat came from within the United Kingdom. There had been rebellion in Ireland for almost ten years and the Scots had continuously invaded England in the civil wars, both could provide a strong base for Charles II to establish a foothold. Cromwell was sent to stop the rebellion in Ireland in March 164, not arriving until August. This delay may well have been due to his desire to remain in the country for as long as possible, casting a watchful eye over Parliament. Cromwell returned in May of the following year, having put pay to the Irish resistance.
