5. a) Show that Laertes' cause parallels that of Hamlet?

Just like Hamlet Laertes is not easily or quickly controlled. This is shown when he questions Claudius about everything, until he is fully convinced that Hamlet, not Claudius, is guilty of murdering his father. Claudius then convinces Laertes to have a fencing match with Hamlet, in which the blade of Laertes will be left uncovered. Fearful he may not strike a death blow, Laertes suggests poisoning the tip of the sword so that a mere scratch will be fatal to Hamlet; it is obvious that he has no moral

scruples like the Prince. As well Hamlet and Laertes want revenge eagerly both of them want revenge for their fathers. Also they want revenge for the women in the play Laertes wants to revenge Hamlet for Ophelia and Hamlet want to revenge Claudius for Gertitude. Both of the care for Ophelia.

b) How do their reactions provide a contrast between them?

When both Hamlet and Laertes hear of the death of the close one and know that someone in the court yard has done that deed. They immediately want revenge to kill the person that has committed the murder. Furthermore in their conversations with the King neither of them seem to trust Claudius completely.

c) How do you account for the difference in their reaction?

The obvious and major difference is that Laertes takes the chance he has for revenge immediately, but Hamlet on the other side does hesitate to kill his enemy.

6. a) What qualities of Claudius are brought out in this scene?

The quality that is brought out in Claudius is his ability to manipulate people to come to his side. The plot to use poison on the unfoiled rapier and poison in the drink. The scheme is devious and deceitful which is typical of Claudius. It is also revealed that he is a cunning, power hungry and unscrupulous schemer who will have his own way at any price. Further more with that he is also intelligent and knows how to act in certain situations. During the play he almost never showed his weakness.

b) What qualities of Laertes are brought out in this scene?

In this scene the readers opinion of Laertes changes completely. His revengeful side is shown, when he is blood thirsty to get revenge on Hamlet. As well it is shown that he is easily manipulated, and this is proven when the king convinces him to murder Hamlet in the fencing duel. Laertes' soft side is also shown when he starts weeping over his sister's death. This showed that he truly did care for his younger sister Ophelia. Not only does Laertes readily fall in with the king's dishonorable suggestion that he could choose "a sword unbated", but in order to make victory and vengeance doubly sure, he further stains his knightly honor by tipping this sword with poison. He shows his contrast to his careless antagonist, who, "most generous and free from all contriving, will not peruse the foils"

c) What qualities of Gertitude are brought out in this scene?

Although the Queen is a devoted mother to Hamlet, she is a weak-willed woman who seems to walk blindly through life. She is always depicted as a passive being, never acting on her own. Her care for Ophelia is brought out.

Order your I just need an essay paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Poetry is an effective medium for the expression of issues, ideas, and the messages. This is to be demonstrated by a comparison of the poem Dulce Et Decorum Est and the song One by Metallica both being about war and its long-term effects both physical and mental. The various techniques used in these song and poems are to be discussed and analysed. Some techniques used were similes, metaphors, symbolism, onomatopea and personification.

Personification is a huge contributinfg factor to both the poem and song respectively. Personification is the basis, basically, of the song One. The song describes the feeling, the inner personal feeling of a soldier at war. The song describes the pains of being at war by stating that the landmine had taken my soul, basically his reason for life. This portrays the landmine, an inanimate, man-made object, was able to through its detonation, to remove this soldiers figurative soul. A landmine is incapable of physically reaching deep inside, in a figurative sence, a literal person and take thier actual soul away from them, but instead in its own way it destroyed the soldiers willingness to live, therefore his soul. As a consequence he felt he was reborn into a life of misery, hurt, dependance on authority, and sadness, this is shown by the symobls where it talkes about the womb, tubes and dependance on different figures of authority. The poem also makes reference to inanimate objects gaining animate features. In essence, the poem states that the war situation that the soldiers find themselves in is depressing, and downright hell. The soldiers are watching a man drown in his own organs and the weight of the situation is almost pressing on them pushing themdown. The issue in both of the poem and song is that it is not honourable, or pleasent to pay the ultimate sacrifice for your country and as the poems theme clearly indicates it is the age old loe told to the younger generation Dulce Et Decorum Est. This is presented by various techniques such as symbolism, and personification and other techniques. The reality of war is presented in this poem and is showing the younger generation exactly what is not involved in war as presented by media they may observe.

The second technique is metaphors. The poem especially was packed full of metaphors, but all clear and carefullypicked. A metaphor that stood out was the sentance where the poet is described as watching his fellow drowning in the green sea. This green sea that his mate is drowning in is describing the hydrogen gas being excreted. The gas has a green tinge to it, therefore the green sea. The drowning effect is there because the gas destroys and liquifies the internal organs and so they drown in their own organs. Metaphors are a complex medium to get a descrete message, view or idea across to an audience and it is used efficently in the poem. The poem states only the truth, and reality about war how it is really a horrible experience not one to be viewed as a holiday as many media influences describe it as rather than the lie about the honourableness to die for your country.

Also there is onomatopia in this poem and song. In the poem when the hydrogen gas is dropped the Gas! Gas! An ecstacy of... is the repetion of the S sound. This is also the sound of the gas being released therefore providing an aspect of imagery too. The song has a more subtle form of onomatopia going that it displays an almost Rat-a-tat-tat machine gun sound through the verse. The more the onomatopea is obvious the more meaning it has in it. This is demonstrated also by sound imagery and realism of war that again confronts the audience with the realism of war as opposed to the lie that was told Dulce Et Decorum Est.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on I just need an essay

Symbolism also is a strong technique used in the poem and song lyrics. The symbolism in the poem is all about showing the after effects of was and flashbakcs. The more symbolism the more realism created. Symbolism is almost a backdrop and creates a three dimensional field of view introducing the audience into the war time situation showing how real and horrible it really is and also the horrific circumstabces by which some of the soldiers have to di. In the poem it gives the symbolism of the green sea scene, explaining the effects of the terrifiying hydrogen gas. The symbolism created by the other techniques is a clear indication of what the author is trying to portray, the realness of the wartime situation.

In conclusion all of the devices used were an improvement on the effectiveness for the expression of issues, ideas and messages.

New equipment and products are being manufactured every day, many of which are contributing to the destruction of our environment. There are many ways in which our society could reduce the damage to our environment, but our desire for comforts and luxuries is too great. Cars pollute the air, generating electricity creates harmful fumes, and chemicals in many products are destroying the ozone layer. Our craving for comforts as demonstrated in our overuse of cars and electricity is leading to the destruction of the ozone layer, and is not only hurting our families but also other species and the environment in which we live.

Cars contribute greatly to the pollution of our world and we should be looking for energy efficient forms of transportation. It has been etched into our minds that cars are a necessity in life, but this mode of transportation is destroying our world. The environment would greatly benefit if we walked, biked, or car-pooled more often. Studies show that our personal transportation generates 6% of the world's pollution problems, creating contaminated water, air pollution, and greenhouse gases. The polluted water harms aquatic species, and greenhouse gases are slowing changing weather patterns which affect crops and species in all geographical areas. If people do not realize soon how our cars are affecting our environment, it may be too late to repair the problems.

Our large demand for electricity is another comfort that harms our environment. It is used for many luxuries in our homes, such as lights, air conditioners, and washing equipment. The plants that generate electricity work twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week to produce electricity for our busy and technological based lives. Pollution from coal energy plants cause acid rain and global warming, while nuclear power plants create hazardous waste that pollutes lakes and harms the environment. We need to start using less electricity, and find a better way of conserving it before our sky is filled with smog and our crops are ruined by acid rain.

The third problem being created by our luxuries and comforts is the destruction of our ozone layer. The ozone layer protects us from the sun's harmful rays, and without it, almost all life on earth would perish. This thin layer of atmosphere is very easily damaged, and the products we use everyday are creating harmful holes in it. Items we use today like refrigerators, air conditioners, and some plastics contain chemicals that when released into the atmosphere slowly wear down the ozone layer. Holes in the ozone effect plant life, and harm humans and animals. Our ozone layer is essential to our being, and we need to stop using unessential things that harm it.

In conclusion, our luxuries and comforts are contributing to the destruction of our environment. Our cars create greenhouse gases, we over use electricity, and unnecessary chemicals are damaging the ozone layer. We need to realize quickly what our technology is doing to our surroundings, and eliminate unneeded pollution and chemicals by changing the way we live our lives.

Both Arthurian legend characters, and Puritan settlers had a lot in common. They both had many hardships and milestones, however they also accomplished great advances for their kingdom or homeland. The most prominent of the similarities was, they were always seeking religion. Secondly, there was always a helping hand being lent to both groups of people.

Religion was a very important part to both groups of peoples. In Arthurian legend for example the search for the Holy Grail was a constant quest for better understanding of religion, in which only the purest of knights would succeed. Puritan literature took a rather different approach, but was persistent in the same manor as in Arthurian legend. They decided that the only way to worship their "Pure" religion was to migrate to a different land, no matter what the cost or outcome of their actions would bring. Mary Rowlandson was one such Puritan always dedicated to her Christian faith especially in times of crisis. Even when she and her family were abducted from their home village, she always had a bible quote or verse handy to comfort her during the situation.

A helping hand seemed to always be key to Arthurian legend and Puritan literature. Arthur became king when he pulled the sword from the stone and needed guidance from someone who was not new to the busyness. Merlin the wizard of the time was named caretaker and overseer of the new king. The puritans sailed to a whole new land where every thing was strange and foreign. Either Merlin was helping King Arthur, or the Native Americans were helping the Puritan settlers become aquatinted with there new land and living conditions.

A little knowledge and a strong religion equal a powerful combination as shown in Arthurian legend and Puritan literature. The point to be made is that with a little guidance, and a common faith, most any obstacle can be overcome.

Struggling through poor articulation, here's an attempt to argue against the dominant view of society on the subject of street vandalism--which I like to call habitat re-decoration--expressed nicely by an anonymous conservative web-site Graffiti is a crime. Graffiti is vandalism. Graffiti is not art. The same web-site went on to say that graffiti damages surfaces to the point of permanently changing the character of the surface and the character of the neighborhood. This restructuring of ones environment is at the heart of the appeal of graffiti. Without much of the usual, criminal anti-establishment rhetoric I'll discuss street art, focusing mainly on stencils, and it's validity as art. Of course how can one discuss illegal art without criticizing the system that makes it illegal? A good tag can be just as stimulating and moving as a Durer or Picasso and just as confusing as a Duchamp. And it's really the wondering why that moves me when I look at a piece. Why did the artist do this? What is he or she, this anonymous criminal, trying to tell me.

The term graffiti derives from the Greek graphein (to write) meaning a drawing or scribbling on a flat surface, originally referring to marks found on ancient Roman architecture. Although examples of graffiti have been found scattered across the globe from Pompeii to the Maya site of Tikal in Mesoamerica. Presently these marks range from simple lines on bathroom walls to complex, colorful, multi-layered compositions covering entire buildings. An important aim of street art is to reawaken a sense of wonder about our urban environment. Seemingly meaningless stencils or free-style graffiti attempt to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the art and their relationship with their surroundings. Can a wall be an empty canvass? A complex colorful tag provides a free, light-hearted counterpart to beer or car billboards, because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the product or motive is not obvious. Frequent encounters with graffiti provoke thought and possibly frustration, nevertheless revitalizing the viewers perception and attention to detail. Some street art has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the piece. The various reactions and interpretations of those who view it reflect their personality and the nature of their sensibilities.

Converting an act of petty vandalism into an act of artistic passion is another driving force of graffiti. Recognizing political or social injustices and desiring some form of social commentary, these "vandals"--without the dollar to buy space for expression of often times repressed viewpoints--must resort to bravely restructuring their environment. Street artists are individuals that see freedom of expression as an inherent right, not as a clause on an amendment on a scrap of yellowed paper. Their medium becomes the spray can, the jar of wheat paste, or the sticker. Their canvas, anything flat and visible. These politically motivated pieces often criticize the division between rich and poor. Injustices and inequalities abound and are waiting only for the artist behind the ski-mask to reveal them, without cover charge, to the eyes of the public. Of course, there are men and women out there with no political motivation.

This leads us back to the Rat series, done by an Englishman known as Banksy, who was the inspiration for this essay. I found his web site while surfing for information about a contemporary artist who was immediately forgotten when I saw Banksy's work. His stencils were creative, fun, and full of satire. His art shows that humor is also a large part of graffiti. "People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of a drainpipe to gain access."(Banksy) He attempts to slow people down or to get them to stop all together and have an extraordinary thought amongst the mundane drudgery of modern life.

Graffiti is an activity which conforms to no rules, no design by committee. True graffiti is just putting work you want out on the street for everyone to see without compromise. No censorship, no gallery owner to reject you. Its about a pure manifestation of your art and ideas whether people like it or not. Graffiti is about showing people that life isn't about Point A and Point B; it's about the space between. Nowadays the average person doesn't take time to appreciate his surroundings and the idea of being here now. It's about seeing the novelty and diversity of life from moment to moment. From the Eiffel tower to the gas-station restroom around the block. Graffiti is a desire for creativity, free expression and validation in life.

Order your Anerexia paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Society has us believing that beautiful women are thin women. Unfortunately, this belief causes many young women to be obsessed with thinness, obsessed to the point of illness, obsessed to the point of anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is an obsession with being thin even after excessive weight loss. It is the pursuit to reach ultimate thinness usually found among most teenagers and young women. This disorder is on the rise due to cultural, family factors, and emotional, which can also lead to serious threatening results in an anorexic's life.

Culture plays a significant role in developing this eating disorder. The value culture places on slenderness forces them to diet. Thin has been around for many decades in American culture. Women are bombarded with the message to achieve an ultra-thin body shape. Images of models are everywhere assuming that as the perfect figure. This causes many girls to starve themselves to be the "ideal figure.

Another factor contributing to anorexia is the need to obtain perfection. Perfection, for some families, is a must not only to strive for, but achieve. A perfectionist desires excellence in all aspects of their life. When they cannot achieve perfection, they "punish" themselves by restriction or starvation. They see the world has black and white with no shades of grey. Everything is good or bad, a success or a failure, thin or fat. Family conflict, parents who are critical of a child's weight, parental abuse, and childhood obesity are all causes of developing anorexia nervosa. Living with such individuals who overvalue physical appearance can unwittingly contribute to this eating disorder as well.

Help with essay on Anerexia

Other factors that may play a role are emotional causes such as personal relationship situations, difficulty in expressing emotions and feelings, and depression. It isn't much about the food and weight; it is how food is used to deal with the emotional problems. Low self-esteem, extreme self-criticism, depression, and deaths in the family are all believed to be potential triggers of anorexia.

The long-term effects of anorexia on the body and mind can be alarming and severe. The most fatal effect is death. If anorexia is not treated, those affected develop another type of eating disorder called bulimia. A Bulimic eats uncontrollably; anywhere up to 10,000 calories. Then it is followed by binge purging like vomiting, laxatives, and excessive excising. Encountering such behaviors usually leads to death. The anorexic or bulimic develop a mental illness. He or she becomes so obsessed even after losing so much weight, the only thing they think about is being so fat. Women with anorexia tend to find it more difficult to become pregnant, and there is the possibility of developing osteoporosis later in life. Fortunately, many of these effects from Anorexia can be reversed with proper treatment.

There are many causes and effects people experience suffering from anorexia. However, there's also a lot more help than there was decades ago. In our society, too many people are being told how to think and look and that is greatly damaging us. People should not change themselves for an imaginary perfect image. Hopefully, the more educated people become about eating disorders, the less we'll be hearing about the lives they claim.

Order your "Individual in society"(A Dolls House) paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! ENGLISH EXT TASK 1 - Individual and Society (A Doll House)

The word individual is used when referring to a single human being. In society, an individual is particular person, who is considered special, has a distinct character, and possesses a uniqueness that sets them apart from every other person. Although the concept of individuality seems to suggest difference and separation, all humans are influenced by their environment. Is there such a thing as an individual in society? Or are we all just products of our time, and the society in which we live? Henric Ibsen explores this concept through his play; A Dolls House. Ibsen's play was set in the 1th century, and reflects many aspects of the society at the time, one of the most important being, the role of women. Throughout my speech I am going to explore the role of women in 1th century society and its relation to the topic; The individual and society.

In the 1th century, British women were expected to marry and have children.

The laws were based on the idea that women would get married and that their husbands would take care of them. When a woman got married, her wealth was passed to her husband. If a woman worked after marriage, her earnings also belonged to her husband. Women would usually not work and had no say in matters of business or finance. The idea was, that upper and middle class women had to stay dependent on a man first as a daughter and later as a wife. In Victorian times, a woman's life wasn't her own, it was dedicated to her husband, children, and looking after the home.

Cheap Custom Essays on "Individual in society"(A Dolls House)

For a woman, marriage meant a life of subservience. They were expected to present themselves in a manner that was both visually pleasing and endearing to their husbands, and were not to do anything that would cause conflict or disharmony within the family. They therefore were unable to express opinions or interfere with the wishes of their husband in any way.

The expectations and role of women in 1th century society is very successfully portrayed in, A Dolls House, through Nora and Torvald's marriage. Nora illustrates the role that women played within a marriage and society in general. In the beginning, Nora accepts her respective role in the relationship, which is to please, and look pretty for her husband. He treats her like a possession; something to be played with at whim and she assumes her role as Torvald's trophy woman.

Nora, is in fact, what would be considered as the perfect 1th century woman, as in the beginning, she lives up to the expectations of the time; to be attractive, uncontroversial and subservient. These expectations of women were generated by the severe patriarchal society of the time. Women were almost forced to assume the role inflicted on them by society, or risk being socially outcast, and left destitute. Severe inequality existed in the 1th century, which suppressed women, making them vulnerable, and left them little choice but to conform. A woman's identity and status was based on the man that she married and she was judged according to him.

By today's standards this existence would be considered highly unjust and unfulfilling, but the fact remains that many 1th century women accepted this role imposed on them by patriarchal society, and didn't know any better.

Many of them were so concerned with social acceptance that they didn't even consider the concepts of independence and individuality. These women were but products of their time; their identities shaped by society and their lives lived according to its expectations.

Although most women conformed, some women did realise the injustice of being a woman and were unhappy with their existence. They knew that by living according to society's expectations that they were not being honest to themselves or anyone else for that matter.

Towards the end of the play Nora is made to realise that her marriage is false and that she is unfulfilled. This brings to light an internal struggle where her desire to be socially accepted, conflicts with her desire for freedom, truth, independence, and personal identity. This shows that all humans want independence and a feeling of individuality at some point in their lives but society restricts them.

The point that I raise is that no one can really be considered a complete individual in a society. People are but products of their time, influenced by the people around them. They want to be respected, liked and accepted within society and so conform, at the cost of living a lie and loosing their individuality.

The taming of the shrew is a plot derived from ‘the war of sexes', in which males and females seek dominance in marriage. In this play, marriage isn't the result of love but people are expected to take part in it and see how it ‘works out'. Gentlemen in this play are not about romance but are about how well they can suit their wives and keep them loyal. Marriage is like a game to the characters of this play, for example Hortensio says " He who runs fastest gets the ring.".

The play also reflects dominance in marriages. Baptista; father to Katherina and Bianca, wants both his daughters to be happily wed, but he is not letting Bianca wed until his oldest daughter Katherina is wed. This shows that the two girls did not have a choice to when they wanted to get married it was up to her father, this was all from the theme ‘a women was her fathers property until she wed, then she was property of her husband'.

The taming of Katherina is not because she is ‘ignorant' as a women but as the way she treats men, or how she should treat men in this case. Women are expected to do this as the male characters of this play are all bought up as in the way of their fathers, and their fathers are all important men for example Lucentio's father is Vincentio, who is an elderly authority figure.

Cheap Custom Essays on Examine the different ways in which Shakespeare presents issues connected with marriage and male and female relationships in the play, the taming of the shrew

In this period (Shakespearean) marriage was for wealth and social advancement, and not for love. The two main women Bianca and katherina, were seen and not heard, no matter how hard katherina rejected to this. The two girls were seen to be their fathers possession until they wed, than they were property of their husband.

A good case of what I meant by marriage was for social advancement is the story line of Petruchio and Katherina, the only reason why Petruchio wants anything to do with Katherina is because of a 'bet' with Lucentio, this shows that men did not show any romance about women but women were for show.

Age difference was also a quite blatant thing I noticed, it was that women were married in teenage years around about the age of sixteen and the men they married were as old as forty.

It is truism to say that change occurs all around us, in many diverse forms. It is a step further to say that these changes are inevitable, something which is a part of our lives and cannot be stopped.

The theme of reminiscence of past times is present in the story entitled Sky High by Hannah Robert. This anecdote retells a past experience of Hannah's from when her grandfather came to stay. In contrast with her current situation she underlies the physical and psychological changes that have taken place. The reader is drawn into the scene by descriptive imagery such as "a struggling sapling, surrounded by the patchy lawn like spectators." The use of alliteration gives a clearer picture of the landscape she is describing, and, combined with personification, the description of Hannah's backyard comes alive in our minds. At first, the washing line is said to have "silver skeletal arms", and then through the passage of time, it has physically changed. In the present it is "an older, more age warped washing line" with "sagging wires". Similarly, Hannah has also changed, overtime. As a young girl she would "swing upside down" on the washing line, yet now "it is unlikelythat the washing line could support" her. She remarks "There are too many things tying me to the ground". Hannah feels the weight of the ages upon her shoulders, she has changed, and the child-like innocence she once possessed is stunted and stagnant. Hannah accepts this physical change in her environment, which results in her understanding how she has personally changed through her reactions of this transformation.

In the park written by Gwen Harwood, has explored the changing of self due to lifes journey. The beginning of the poem portrays the mother wearing clothes that are out of date, this emphasises how the mother has little time for personal care and happiness now that she has bickering children to look after. The overall flatness in the poem emphasises the monotony in the mothers life, and highlights the boredom of plodding through life. But, when she unexpectedly meets a past lover, the dialogue starts How nice et cetera…But for the Grace of God. This religious reference is evidence that the man is thankful that he has not been part of this change, which has so obviously caused dramatic consequences in the womens life. At the end of the poem, the women says, they have eaten me alive whilst she is comforting the young child and is evidently comforted in return. This is a strange use of irony as the mother is tied down by her responsibilities, but seems to have been content with change. This contentment was only questioned by her reaction towards her past lover.

Erin Brockovich, directed by Steven Soderbergh, has depicted change through the main character, Erin, like the women in In the park, her physical appearance also suggests that she is of low socio economic status. Erin is also a struggling, single mother due to two failed marriages. Her life changes when her neighbour George enters her life asking for her number. She responds by saying How bout this for a number, six, thats the age of my daughter, eight, is the age of my son, two, is the number of times Ive been divorced and sixteen is the number of dollars I have in my bank account. Here Brockovich is trying to resist change in her life but later, when she accepts this change she learns that this change, in fact, reshaped her existence in a positive manner. The changes she underwent years previous to now aided her in her ability to connect with local citizens. This then lead to her being respected for the first time in her life. The respect she gained gave her an emotional strength which not only helped her reinvent her own life but it helped her change the lives of others by triumphing over insurmountable odds.

It is the experiences and how one reacts to that experience that shapes their change.

This cant happen to me!!! It just cant!! I screamed. I ran out of my English class, towards the guidance office, but there they were waiting for me. I quickly did a 180, and dashed out the side door. I ran as fast as I could towards the little woods behind Greenwood High School. I wasnt sure where I was going or when I was going to stop, I just needed some time to think. I found a big apple tree and slumped down on one of its big roots. It was here that I stayed until late at night. Millions of thoughts were going through my head all at once; how could this have happened? She was fine yesterday! I saw her last night! Why did this happen? She was only 16. Tears filled my eyes as I thought of how Stephanie looked last night. She is so beautiful, I thought, I just dont understand.

RING! The bell for my last class just rang. Great guys, were late again, I said to Kara. Yea, Mrs. Oaks is going to kill us. We slammed our lockers shut and sprinted to room 07. Maybe Steph will be in there, I thought to myself. She hadnt come to school today and I had tried calling her eight times during lunch, but got no answer. Kara must have been thinking the same thing, Hey, do you think Steph will be there? I just shrugged. It was really odd for her not to come to school without telling one of us first. As soon as Kara and me entered the room we expected to get the death look from Mrs. Oaks. The look that says if I wasnt so old and weak, I would kill you with my bear hands for being late, but we didnt get it. Instead, she looked at me with a sorrowful look and quietly shut the door. Then she went to the front of the room with a little piece of paper in her hands, sat on her bench, and didnt speak a word. The whole class became silent. Even though we sometimes think Mrs. Oaks is senile, this was a little bizarre for her. What the hell is goin on? Some kid asked from the back of the room. We all started snickering, but were interrupted when she stood up and said the words that will ring in my mind for the rest of my life; I have some tragic news. Then she read from the piece of paper, One of our fellow students was in a car wreck this morning. Stephanie Daprile was pronounced dead at 74 a.m. That was all I heard. I suddenly felt numb and dead to the world. People were talking all around me but I felt as if I was a million miles away. That is when I ran. I ran towards the guidance office, and I could see Mr. Gardner waiting for me with open arms. No! I didnt want to talk to him; I didnt want to talk to anyone.

Steph was like an angel. She even looked like one. If she looked at someone a certain way, she could get anything she wanted. Guys were always drooling over her brown curly hair or her big brown puppy dog eyes. I always asked her, why not take advantage of that? She would always reply with, We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from it. I never really understood that, but the more I sat underneath that tree, the more things Steph said became clear. I leaned back against the tree, closed my eyes and remembered my childhood.

All through middle school, my parents would have horrible fights. Sometimes they were so violent I was even terrified of staying there. In 8th grade one night, I woke up to a crashing glass sound. I opened my door to find my dad throwing glass jars at my mom. Both were screaming at each other and telling them they hated each other. Me, thinking I would be able to stop it, step

Michael Bean

George Bush Senior was elected president in 18. He was elected saying many things, such as having no new taxes and increasing military spending. His views were hardly his own, but seemeed to be borrowed from the prior president, Ronald Reagan. He seemed only to be an extension of the well regarded Ronald Reagan, and seemed like a good choice for the Reagan-lovers.

Like his siblings and family alike, he was given a fast track to political success and seemed to be taking full advantage of it. Despite the hardy appearance and well-projected image, Bush would later fold some of his promises under pressure.

Along with many people who questioned his perfect moderate appearance, Bush began to stray towards a conservative Texan and soon his policies changed. He was often regarded as a president who would work strictly for his own benefit.

Order College Papers on George Bush Sr., how will he be remembered? Bush' media advisors worked hard to project a tougher, firmer image, which was a success, but it was later shown that Bush would be a self-defining character throughout his presidency.

Once elected as president, and inaugurated on the 0th of Janurary, 18, Bush dropped the firm image for a while, and took people on tours on his first day as president. He left a looser, more informal atmosphere throughout the Government and White House.

At the time of his election, both Houses were controlled by democrats, so Bush had no choice to choose his fights moderately, and had a great deal of trouble making any sort of rash decisions.

One of his most well-known blunders, the world realized that reading Bush' lips meant nothing, as Bush decided that raising taxes was an absolute necessity. This not only ruined his public image and made everyone question his every decision, but it lost his strong support with the few republicans left in the government at the time.

Soon after the president drew a blank on how to solve the deficit, he and Congress agreed on a budget package that would marginally raise taxes for the general public, and reduce high-paying exemptions. Folding again, Bush really hurt his image on keeping his word and also lost much of his support with the republicans.

Continuting the economic turmoil, unemployment rates rose sharply around 11. Attempting to remedy the situation, Bush decided he would raise benefits for the unemployed, and would make concessions with Japan, Austrialia and South Korea for exports. Although he did reach small agreements with Japan, the endeavor was considered yet another failure.

Soon after Bush' 1 State of the Union address, Bush made yet another questionable decision vetoing a bill that would raise taxes for the wealthy to lower the deficit. It was considered one of his tougher decisions regarding tax raises.

Despite all Bush' problems with following his word and keeping the economy running back at home, he was heralded for his handling of foreign affairs. He was praised for his handling of Nicaragua, unseating the leaders that had long bothered both Bush and Reagan.

Bush also did well in Panama, using force when necessary, as it was to remove Gen. Manuel Noriega from power. He was able to capture and charge the general with several charges.

One of Bush' best moves while in office, he made several agreements with Mikhail Gorbachev to reduce weapons and sign peace treaties. Soon after he also kept the agreements coming when signing with Yeltsin and Russia.

While handling his most serious issue as president, Bush' popularity rose to incredible highs. He managed to defend the defenseless Kuwait, and rid the country of all Iraqi soldiers with one of the quickest wars in world history, with battle lasting but 100 hours. The only downfall to the situation was the method in which Bush ended the war, with cease-fire before Saddam Hussein was removed from office in Iraq. Although this error seemed minute at the time, it has had it's share of consequences, leading to the recent Iraqi war.

Although Bush seemed to have an overall successful presidency, his image in history can be summed up in the way the 1 election went

Despite international successes, economic disaster and lack of trust were overwhelming to the public. The inconsistency of Bush' presidency would leave him in the cold, exactly as the election went, with an initial prediction of re-election, but would end with bitter defeat

All throughout his presidency, Bush seemed to be a real livewire, unpredictable and energized, but it would not be enough to remove the images cemented into the citizen's minds as a misleading, poor money handling man.

Please note that this sample paper on George Bush Sr., how will he be remembered? is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Beowulf, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Beowulf paper at affordable prices! In the epic poem Beowulf it can be seen as a social commentary dealing with man's struggle to carve civilization out of a hostile, alien environment. In my own eyes Hrothgar and his crew might not have been as civilized if Grendel wasn't around, there would be no one to bring them together.

Beowulf is a great hero, separated by his acts of strength and courage. He was willing to risk his life for the life of the his community. At the beginning of when Beowulf first came in the Heorot Hall he wasn't accepted. People didn't think that they needed this outsider to come and resolve their problems. Until Hrothgar showed his people that he accepted and trusted Beowulf. To show his people he gave the hero a variety of gifts and treasures. So know that Hrothgar approved everyone started to like Beowulf and became grateful for the duties he was willing to do.

People were fearing Beowulf because they had no knowledge of this hero. Not knowing anything at all bout him increased the challenge of keeping the community civilized as time went on. Everyone was seeing Beowulf as an intruder. One person that wasn't helping with accepting Beowulf was Unferth. He was trying to bring down Beowulf to his own level. But in the end Beowulf showed Unferth who was the better

person.

Grendel was a monster that created problems and he was also was an entertainer for the community. He was characterized by being uncivilized and known as the outcast. The mead hall would not even be in existence if Grendel was not around. . This was a place for people to come together and to battle Grendel. This was Grendel's attack place, but every time that he attacked it seemed like the people would just come together.

There is something strange about the monster. He would only come to the Heorot Hall to attack if the victim was either sleeping or drunk. He would only attack if the other was unaware and not expecting anything. He waited and watched every move and when they were unable to fight he would attack. While waiting for Grendel the people would drink, tell stories all night just awaiting the arrival of the monster. These people were unaware that Grendel was there watching and waiting until those people are that their weakest point. He waited until the person could not fight back, that is why he only attacked those who were unaware because he was afraid of getting beat. By doing this he made the community be more afraid of this monster attacking them.

Due to all the commotion in the community they kept themselves secluded from what was going on around them. It made the people live with some kind of fear, that's exactly how Grendel wanted it to be. It kept the people from doing their usual activities.

Because of the fear they were unable to live their life to the point that they wanted. Everything changed when Grendel entered the poem. No one was the same person.

Yes, people have fears but Grendel was the main fear of the community. These people were not doing much to try and over come this fear, that is why I don't understand why all these people were upset when Beowulf came around to try and help. He was willing to do what needed to be done and no one else was.

In conclusion, Beowulf was the one the kept the community strong and civilized. He shows how a man is struggling and how he carved civilization out of a hostile, alien environment. Everyone had to come and work as one to defeat the thing that caused everyone to be scared. The community as a whole could defeat Grendel not just Beowulf.

Order your Lord of the Flies Speech paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Good morning Ms Barr and fellow students, I will be speaking about the ways in which the novel Lord Of The Flies by William Golding illustrates that human experience, attitudes and values are shaped by their environment.

These thoughts are conveyed through the boys who are abandoned on an island after their plane crashes while evacuating from England during WWI. Golding tries to shows us that when humans are left in the natural environment, their attitudes and values will change, as they do not have the rules and regulations of society inflicting on their actions.

Golding uses his characters very effectively. The two sides of man's personality are represented by Jack and Piggy. Jack represents the evil side of man. He is the leading advocate of anarchy on the island and is the leader of the savage group that hunts the pigs. Jack is the kind of person which Golding believed everyone would eventually become if left alone to set one's own standards and live the way one naturally wanted.

Piggy however represents the law and order of the adult world. He is the part of man's personality which attempts to act according to an absolute set of standards. Its no coincidence that Piggy's nickname is such; the overwhelming emotion Jack and his hunters have to kill the pig is an indirect and clever author metaphor to suggest the boys are also killing a part of Piggy. In fact, while Jack and his gang continue to kill more pigs, the logic and reason which Piggy symbolizes progressively diminishes with the pigs.

Write my Essay on Lord of the Flies Speech cheap

This links with Robert Gray's poem ‘The Meatworks'. The way in which Jack and his group of savages develop a disregard to the pigs and slaughter them is similar to that of the workers at the meatworks. Gray's use of unpleasant adjectives such as "bellowing" and "stench" gives us the impression that he doesn't want to be there but is obligated to, because "the only work was at this Works". This is the same for the boys on the island, as they do not wish to be on the island but have no choice, and the only reason they kill the pigs is because it is the only way they can survive. Also Gray uses personification, describing the machine he works with as having a "chomping, bloody mouth", to help create the distasteful image of the meatworks and to try and make us dislike the meatworks as he does. His experiences in this environment change his attitudes towards the meatworks, as well as his values of the pigs, as not just pieces of meat, but living creatures that experience the same type of emotions as humans.

Another technique used by Golding is symbolism. There are several important symbols throughout the novel. The Beast, the Lord of the Flies, is the evil part of man. The boys believe it is a real object that frightens the boys, but is really just something internal; it is in the mind and soul of the boys.

The conch symbolizes the law and order of the old adult world which Piggy tries so desperately to protect. The conch represents all the authority which the boys are so used to obeying. When Jack destroys the conch, anarchy quickly ensues because any hope of strong, central leadership has been abandoned. The island society collapses into chaos.

The other important symbol is the parachute man. This symbolizes the end of adult supervision of the boys on the island. While the parachute man is flapping back and forth on the island, conjuring up a powerful image of its prolonged death, the Beast, or Lord of the Flies, is prospering under its new control over Jack and most of the other boys on the island. So while the law and order of the adult world is waning, childish chaos is growing exponentially.

As the boys adjust to their new environment their attitudes towards the rules and regulations of their old environment change. They disregard them and become uncivilized and savage. Their becoming savages begins with their first successful hunt. This is the beginning of the anarchy that is to occur.

The boys divide into two groups, Jack and his hunters, and Ralph with his followers. Ralph is still concerned with getting off the island and remaining civilized, whereas Jack is mainly concerned with hunting and just having fun. Jack and his followers values have changed. At first they desperately wanted to get off the island, and back to society, but they are now quite happy with staying on the island and having fun. Their values and attitudes have been shaped by their new environment that is without rules and adults that were apart of their old environment.

In conclusion, I believe that Golding conveys how human experience, attitudes and values are shaped by their environment very effectively in his novel Lord Of The Flies.

Racism is one of the main themes of Black Boy . Throughout the story we can see how black people lived and suffered , just for being different .

They were treated as animals and humillated by people . They didn't have rights and had to support the injustices of life at that period of time.

Since little , Richard knew but didn't understand that white people were different to black people , he thought that they were the same but still knew that white people were more powerful than black people , for example when he said in page ¨ And when a word circulated among the black people of the neighborhood that a black boy had been severy beaten by a white man , I felt that the white man had the right to beat the black boy. Richard refer to the black person as a boy , and to the white person as a man , by this difference we can see that he wasn't really concerned about the differences between whites and blacks , but he knew in a very innocence way that white men were more powerful than black men.

Do my essay on Racism in Black Boy CHEAP !

As time goes by Richard realizes that many of the hardships of his life , such as poverty , hunger and lack of education , were the results of racial discrimination .

Another example of racism is shown in chapter eight ,when a black man , who was a classmate of Richard's brother , was killed by whites for visiting a white prostitute . This event made Richard realized how afraid he was of the white terror that could assault him at any time , and so he had to be very careful in whatever he did so that he would not be killed by whites . However black people were always in danger from whites.

One of the main problems that Richard had was that he treated white men as his equals. In chapter nine Richard was beaten with a whiskey bottle by some white boys whom he forgets to called them " sir." This also happened in the same chapter when a white man offered him a ride into town but he beated Richard because he forgets to called him "sir" . This clearly show us that white men had the right to beated and killed black people if they wanted to . We can also see that Richard did not want to accept the superiority of white peole , and that he have not learn how to live as a black man in the South, he should hide his true feelings and act different in front of white people , and also he has to think before he speaks to whites.

Another example or racial discriminations related to humillation is shown in chapter twelve when a black worker called Shorty earned money by being a clown and by humillating himself , in order to make whites laugh ,and give him some coins . For example one day he asks a white man for a quarter and in return lets the man kick him in the pants . To Richard this event was disgusting , but other black workers cared more about bread than about dignity .

The last example of racism is related with education . In Chapter thirteen Richard is interested in reading a book from H.L Mencken , but black people wasn't allowed to borrow books from the public library and so he asked a catholic man , if he could borrow his card and he accepted .Not letting black people to read books from the public library was unfair , people should always have the right to learn , but obviously black men were consider as people with no intelligence , and also very few wanted to improve their situation , they were only interested in survival.

Karma (deeds) and results of Karma are the basis of our lives. Knowing that good karma will bring good results and vice versa, our lives can be guided towards fruition of Salvation termed as Moksha. Karmas are of various levels and will effect a soul for short or long time depending upon its gravity. A simple act will bring a simple and short term reward , whether it be good or bad. More serious karma can bring a longer lasting reward and yet still some karmas are so good or bad that they last for some lifetimes. The result or the fruit of a karma cannot be escaped. This is hard and fast. As for bad karma when one gets realized, begins to do good deeds and takes the path towards God then fortunately the punishment of any past bad deeds only Here we can see that Hinduism claims to have the truth in regard to its belief in karma and salvation. To Hinduism, Christianity and Islam do not have the truth and are in error regarding the doctrine of condemning people to hell. Hinduism has the truth. As pointed out in earlier chapters, this can be termed implicit intolerance. Also we see the similarity with Buddhism in that another person cannot be used as a propitiation for your sins or bad deeds [karma], this is something one has to do himself through his own self-reliance.

Hindus believe in the repetitious Transmigration of the Soul. This is the transfer of ones soul after death into another body. This produces a continuing cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth through their many lifetimes. It is called samsara. Karma is the accumulated sum of ones good and bad deeds. Karma determines how you will live your next life. Through pure acts, thoughts and devotion, one can be reborn at a higher level. Eventually, one can escape samsara and achieve enlightenment. Bad deeds can cause a person to be reborn as a lower level, or even as an animal. The unequal distribution of wealth, prestige, suffering are thus seen as natural consequences for ones previous acts, both in this life and in previous lives.

helps one reroute to God. That is the best part of it.

Many of our hero's are famous, whether in sports, movies, or music. Then we have heroes such as family members or close friends. But what exactly is a hero and what are the main qualities of a hero. One dictionary describes a hero as a man/woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his/her brave deeds and noble qualities. There are many different definitions for a hero/heroine. We may not be able to express in word what exactly we think a hero is. There are many different things that make us select people as our hero or heroine. It may be the courageous deeds they do for people, the strange or hard jobs that they perform, or maybe it's their talents (such as actors, singers, and athletes). Whatever it may be, there is something special about the people we chose to be our hero.

We can say that most of our heroes/heroines are brave, determined, and audacious. Take for instance Batman. Many consider him to be a hero because he shows bravery when it comes down to protecting the citizens of Gotham City from the bad people there. He's determined to keep the city safe no matter what obstacles he are forced to face. Then, he's very audacious or bold when he does these heroic acts.. He never lets anything scare him or keep him from doing something he's determined to do. And he shows his caring attributes towards all in the city. And some look up to him and consider him a hero for things like that. Then we have parents that are considered hero's to some of us. What makes parents heroes? Many of us would say it's because they're devoted, hardworking, and loving. Many admire their parents for the things they've done or even the things that both you and your parents have been through together. Through it all they've remained devoted, hardworking, and caring. Our heroes must also have strength and creativity.
