"What's eating Gilbert Grape" Essay

"The film ‘What's eating Gilbert Grape' is about change, discuss."

Lasse Hallstrom's film ‘What's eating Gilbert Grape' is primarily about change, both within the Grape family and the whole town of Endora. In this film, in which nothing actually seems to happen and looks as thought it ends where it began, we see some clear changes within the characters. Some of them go through a long, hard journey to fight for their lives and encounter a change. The director implies that Becky is used as a catalyst, both for Gilbert and Arnie.

At the beginning of the film we see that Gilbert is ashamed of his family. When some kids try to sneak a look at Gilbert's fat momma, he gives them a boost so they can see. He also refers to his mum as a "whale", secretly re-enforces the floor because her obesity has caused it to nearly collapse and has to deal with the embarrassment of Arnie climbing the water tower. Gilbert feels trapped in Endora. He feels like he has no escape from this small town where everything he has ever known is. At the start of the film when Gilbert is narrating, he tells of his older brother who "got away" and you can almost sense jealousy in his tone of voice. Betty Carver quotes, "I knew you'd always be here" when she tries to explain why she wanted to be with Gilbert and not her husband. Arnie often says how they're "not going anywhere" which ultimately drives Gilbert to his wits end.

Write my Essay on "What's eating Gilbert Grape" The major change in Gilbert's life is the arrival of Becky and her grandmother. They arrive in Endora because their trailer breaks down. Becky becomes trapped in

Endora, much like Gilbert and his family. Becky is a very down-to-earth person who treats everyone as equals and she doesn't expect anything major from anyone. Becky and Gilbert often have quite deep conversations about life and the things going on around them. In one conversation Becky asks Gilbert what he wants. Gilbert's response is, "A new house for the family, Momma to take aerobics classes, Ellen to grow up, and a new brain for Arnie." Becky then insists on what he wants and he replies with "I want to be a good person." His response devalues himself and shows his need to do better.

A very important part in the film is where Gilbert "explodes" while trying to bath Arnie. Symbolism is used here where in a previous scene Gilbert is blowing up a red balloon (red representing anger/frustration) and it explodes, like Gilbert with Arnie. We see a clear difference in the way Gilbert handles this situation with Arnie, who refuses to get into the bath. Normally Gilbert is very passive but this time he shows pure anger. It is important to notice that both Gilbert and Arnie seek out Becky after this incident. They see her as comfort and warmth. Gilbert then returns home and makes peace with Amy, Ellen and Arnie. He then introduces Becky to Momma, assuring her that he is not ashamed of her.

When Momma decides to return to her bed upstairs, the whole Grape family get a shock. The conversation between Gilbert and Momma is one of reconciliation. Momma refers to Gilbert as her "knight in shimmering armour" and immediately they are at peace with each other. The burning of the old house represents a new life for the Grape family. Although Momma is no longer with them, it seems as though the family have re-united with one another Arnie helps move the furniture out of the house and Ellen seems to soften a bit too.

Arnie heavily relies on Gilbert at the beginning of the film. He needs Gilbert to bath him, dress him and get him into bed. A clear change in Arnie would be the way he looks at death. He dealt with the death of his father and the grasshopper very differently to the death of his mother (he over-reacted to the death of the grasshopper). He dealt with his mother's death a little bit quieter and more peaceful, almost to the extent that he wasn't totally aware of what was going on at first.

Arnie also became a lot more independent at the end of the film. Becky influenced this. Arnie isn't seen as a burden to Gilbert anymore in the furniture scene. Arnie helps move the furniture instead of causing havoc (like when he runs around the house and destroys his birthday cake) and getting in everyone's way. He also chooses to go and see Becky when Gilbert lashes out at him. This shows he is capable of making his own decisions of what to do in a situation like that, instead of just sitting in the bathroom feeling sorry for himself.

Maturity was another change seen in Arnie. He becomes more self-dependant and starts to understand the difference between right and wrong. In the party scene Arnie wears more mature clothes (shirt and tie) compared to, what seemed, quite childish clothes throughout the earlier parts in the film. When Arnie "makes up" with Gilbert he hits him because Gilbert hit Arnie when he lashed out. This shows that Arnie isn't as dependent on Gilbert anymore and can stand up for himself.

A change is also seen in Momma. When Gilbert introduces the viewers to his family and home, we see Momma just sitting on the couch not really aware of what it going on. Everything in the house must come to her; she does not go to it. Although, when Arnie is arrested for climbing the water tower she demands that she goes to the jail to bail him out. This comes as a shock to the Grape family but they agree. The reaction of the public at the sight of Momma was quite a shock to her. It made her realise that she has become something quite "entertaining" to people. When Momma walks up the stairs to what can be portrayed as her "death bed" you can almost imagine that she is giving her last ounces of energy into the steps up the stairs. Instead of not bothering to do anything she tries to show her family that she is strong and can do it, but she is also aware of the consequences that follow.

Endora also goes through some changes with the introduction of "Burger Barn." Endora is a town where not a lot seems to happen, much like the people that live there. There aren't many things to do, apart from perhaps have an ice cream or visit the grocery store where Gilbert works. Burger Barn shows a new lease of life for Endora, which is first seen as the "ENDora of the line."

So in this film that doesn't seem to resolve much but actually does, we can clearly see as viewers that many of the main characters go through quite drastic changes in the way they look and feel about life, even though they don't all survive at the end. Therefore it is also clear to see the Lasse Holstrom's film ‘What's eating Gilbert Grape' is primarily about change, both within the Grape family and the whole town of Endora.

So they had to face with the death by guns and bullets everyday. They also had to work to support the needs in family. At that time, husbandry was the most popular work to do. They tried to reach their own land to plant but it wasnt easy as they thought. The war destroyed everything but it did not make my ancestor given up. However, for their family and their own surviving, they just kept planting and hoped for the next harvest. Their belief really helped them in work and also gave them the hope, the strength for their children in future.

Coming after my ancestor, my father was also the great worker. Since the day his children were born, he had to work harder to feed them. He could do any kind of work like dresser, waiter, wheelwright, cobbling. He usually told his children, to be a good person, you have to work and work hard. Even when we came to US, a luxurious place, he did not stop working. I usually talked to him that he was getting old, so he just stopped working and let my brothers and me support the family. But he disagreed because he wanted to model and let his children to follow that model. It was the great precept, which made me always proud of my father.

I was born in a very big city of South Vietnam, but I did not have a chance to spend my childhood here. My father was a sergeant in the US army during the Vietnams war. When the communists conquered South Vietnam, all the people who were involved with the US were imprisoned and my father was not excepted. All my familys properties were confisticated by the communists, and we were all moved to the Place they called new economic zone. It was a wild forest with no school, no market, no hospital and no traffic. The entire scene you could see was mountain and forest. We had to start a new life with empty hands. We were rich and never had to do hard work before and life was terrible for all my fellow villagers who had the same background as my family. There were a lot of people who died of malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever or many kinds of wild diseases that we had never seen before. As a young boy, I did not have anything that other boys at my age had. I did not have the chance to play like most kids today in America. I had to work for a living. I had to go to the forest to find small bamboo shoots or the wild yams for food. We usually had rice, mixed with jackfruit seed, instead of plain rice. My meal at that time was a bowl of rice, including manioc or sweet potato and some small dry fishes. I did not know about pork, beef or chicken at my young age.

Order your Legalisation of cannabis paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Cannabis

We hear conflicting views about cannabis everyday. The government has plans to relax the laws on cannabis possession. It has been convinced by several expert bodies that there is nothing to be gained from exaggerating the harm of cannabis, so it looks set to be downgraded from a class B to class C drug. That means if anyone is found using it they are likely to escape with a caution instead of being prosecuted. However growing or supplying cannabis could still mean a prison sentence. Deputy Minister for Justice, Richard Simpson, emphasises this when he warned that those who use or sell cannabis should be in no doubt that they still run the risk of heavy fines or imprisonment.

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance has always argued that the law is too hard on cannabis users, arguing that it can be less harmful to health than alcohol or cigarettes. They say it should be a legal stimulant whose use is up to individuals of a certain age and they argue that arresting someone for smoking weed is an infringement of their freedom and it should be up to the individual to decide what they want to put into their body.

Pro-legalisation groups argue that cannabis can help cure stress, ease pain and improve the appetite. There are even pills and sprays on sale using extracts from the weed. They also assert that banning people from buying it is an invasion of their privacy.

Write my Essay on Legalisation of cannabis for me In addition, illegally sold cannabis can be mixed with anything from rat poison to detergent to increase its hallucinogenic effects and make it cheaper to produce. Thus, it can be argued that legalising cannabis would stop cannabis and hard drugs being sold with no control over quality or protection for the consumer.

Legalising cannabis would also mean that, like alcohol and tobacco , the selling of it could be taxed, bringing in valuable income to the governments of poorer countries around the world, instead its sale has created a massive black market which makes huge profits, free of taxation and control, and is suspected of financing criminal and terrorist activities.

Rather than agreeing to with reports which link cannabis to lung cancer, pro-legalisation groups say it's the tobacco definitely deadly poisonous and highly addictive- that you mix with the cannabis to create a spliff which gives it a bad name. Legalisation would mean it could be sold in different forms such as tablets to avoid tobacco consumption.

Nevertheless although there are no figures proving anyone has ever died from smoking it, no-one has proved that smoking it definitely isn't harmful, the long term effects can be very serious. The latest findings show that people who smoke cannabis before they are fifteen are eleven times more likely to develop depression and schizophrenia as early as their twenties. The cost of long term mental illness could cost the NHS millions.

Additionally, its not just your brain that's affected by cannabis, the lungs are too. Lung cancer is Britain's biggest killer, claiming more than thirty four thousand lives each year. A recent report has revealed a strong link between cannabis smoking and lung cancer to the point where one joint can contain four times as much tar as a cigarette.

If you add this to the fact that cannabis is often smoked with tobacco, without a filter and is often inhaled deeper and for longer, the effects on the lungs can be devastating, and not only on the user but on the NHS.

It seems people still see cannabis as the cool ‘soft' drugs it was believed to be in the sixties and don't realise it can have negative side effects. However the social implications are no concern as due to new improved cultivation methods the fact is that cannabis is now fifteen times stronger than it was in the sixties, this makes it hard to determine what harm it could be doing the user as long term studies have yet to be undertaken.

It's enough to concern medical organisations BLF and drug charities like Drugscape as Dame Helena Shovelton, chief executive of the BLF explains, there's a myth that cannabis is ‘safe' especially amongst young people, but the truth is that cannabis cigarettes contain fifty percent more cancer causing agents than tobacco. She asserts that we need to get a clear message across that cannabis really does do harm.

Dr David Regis, the director of the School Health Education Unit (SHEU) believes the government is partly to blame for the availability of cannabis and the rise of its use amongst teenagers as mixed messages are being given to young people about cannabis because of the governments focus legalisation issues and reclassification of the drug. Relaxing cannabis laws is giving younger people greater freedom to smoke, and makes it easier for them to get cannabis on the streets. There needs to be a crackdown on the sale of cannabis to convey the message that it is a drug and, as such, is still illegal.

In my opinion, the government should wait until more research has been done to discover its long term effects before legalising it. Moreover downgrading cannabis to a class C drug could lead to the downgrading and use of harder more dangerous drugs such as heroin and ecstasy that are known to be fatal. In fact, legalisation of cannabis may well open up a Pandora's Box of problems for future generations.

There Should Be No Restrictions On the First Amendment

Today, many people are pondering over the choice whether or not to change or put some restrictions on parts of the Constitution due to some outstanding circumstances. One of those parts of the of the Constitution is the First Amendment, where it states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redess of grievances" (www.dictionary.com). I personally feel that everybody should be able to say and express how one feels as long as it doesn't endanger others in any way, and I think both the authors, Paul McMasters and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., would agree with me. These two authors wrote articles defending the First Amendment, "Free Speech Verse Civil Discourse," written by McMasters (17), and "Let Them Talk" written by Gates(18).

Custom Essays on There Should Be No Restrictions On the First Amendment Paul McMasters directs the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University and is President of the Society of Professional Journalists. He opposes any attempts to regulate or ban speech on college campuses. He first touches on how speech codes have not stopped hate speech yet, and how all it is doing is prosecuting and persecuting those whom they are supposed to protect. McMasters also mentions that instead of encouraging and educating, censorship enforces a form of ignorance by taking focus from the actual dialogue, and it could risk an increase of racial tention rather than trying to decrease it. He also says, "They have failed to draw a definite line between acceptable speech and unacceptable speech" (McMasters 17). McMasters begins to pick on the speech code advocates saying how they are unable to see the irony and contradictions in their own positions, and accusing them that by doing this, they are putting on the titles such as racist, sexist and other-ist. In the closing of his article, he says, "No doubt, there are many other constructive and creative ideas for adressing hurtful acts and hateful speech on campus. Before we can tap those ideas, we will need to agree that speech codes are a mistake and that we must move on to the larger and more critical social issues that comfort us now. It is time to abandon the Quest for the Quick fix. It is time to step into the circle of common ground and halt the dangerous dance at the fringes, hurling invective and watching the common ground disintegrate. It is time to devote our energy to tearing down barriers instead of erecting them. It is time to declare an end to the speech code debate and move on to the larger question of eliminating bias and bigotry in all of society" (McMasters 175). McMasters basically wanted to be shown that the First Amendment does not take sides, all sides can march under its banner, all sides must heed its mandate for tolerance, understanding, and search for common ground. He ends his passage with this quote, "In it, there is hope, it may be the only hope" (McMasters 176).

Henry Louis Gates Jr. is an African American Literary scholar at Harvard Universary. Among his published books are Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex, Hate Speech, Civil Rights, Civil Liberties, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man, and The Norton Anthology of African American Literature. A lot of the things he says are reminiscent of Paul McMasters and Susan Gellman. He first touches on the fact that now the black intellectuals are no longer the political imperative to protect free speech (Gates 18). Gates says that the term "hate speech" is an ideology in spansule form, that it is the term-of-art of a movement (Gates 18). Just like McMasters, Gates says that speech codes may be more narrow and responsibly tailored, also carefully drafted by tailors (Gates 18).

Both Mari J. Matsuda and Charles R. Lawrence III do not agree with McMasters and Gates. They both belive that there should be a sencorship and limatations of freedom of speech. Mari J. Matsuda is a law professor at Georgetown University and frequently contributes to law journals. She strongly advocates regulating speech on college campuses. She uses the terms "assaultive speech" and "hate speech" to strongly bring out her points(Matsuda 150). Now, Charles R. Lawrence III is a professor of law at the Stanford University Law School, which played a major role in the debate whether to regulate or ban racist speech on college campuses. He favors doing so. Lawrence supported the speech regulations drafted by a fellow law professor. He presents those regulations and uses them as the basis of arguing that minority-group students need this kind of protection(Lawrence 155).

There are many situations in society today where the words "hate speech" and "fighting words" are taken out of control. In the situation of Suit Forces U.S. Riverside to Rescind Fraternity Penalty, the University took things way out of hand. The Fraternity had a South of the Boarder party, and to promote this party the frat made t-shirts with cartoon people drinking beer. The animated people on these shirts resembled the appearance of Mexicans, and the University considered that rasist, and the frat was disbanded. How strange, a Mexican at the South of the Border wow, that is really racist com'on! The school's inter-fraternity council fought for the frat and finally got them reinstated (Ralph Frammolino 111-114). Another ridiculous situation is the case of Chaplinsky vs. New Hampshire, where a man named Walter Chaplinsky, a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, was out doing his preaching work on the streets of Rochester, New Hampshire, one Saturday morning. People started to complain to the point where a police officer had to approach the man and tell him to leave. Walter responded to the officer saying, "You are a God damned racketeer and a damned facist and the whole government of Rochester are facists or agents of facists." The man was arrested on the account of violating New Hampshire law 78. The court said that it was irrelevant, but it should have never been a case in the first place (U.S. Supreme Court 16-18). These are just some of the many examples that prove that people are just overreacting and that as long as you aren't physically harmed or threatend by words, then stop being so sensitive and let people talk.

Emerson, considered the father of the American Literary Renaissance, wrote many essays to ultimately change the societal values surrounding him. In "Self Reliance," Emerson conveys his philosophical idea that every individual has their own individual genius speaking universal truths. However this tends to be a hard to achieve with society imposing conformity, traditions, and institutions on society. "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, -that is genius"(1). Emerson values individuality and believed that thinking for one's self and trusting original ideas, help reach a universal truth that will ultimately benefit society as a whole. Thoreau, Whitman, Dickson, and Frederick Douglass, and Hawthorne's writings all have an "Emersonian" essence of self-reliance and individual genius by conveying themes of individuality and non-conformity.

Similar to Emerson, Thoreau dislikes institutions and promotes non-conformity. He believes the government stands in the way of individuality because the majority, instead of the individual thinker, makes decisions. Thoreau takes Emerson's "Self Reliance" philosophy further by becoming an activist while following his conscious or individual thoughts. An example is Thoreau protesting slavery using Civil Disobedience, "If one HONEST man, in this State of Massachusetts, ceasing to hold slaves, were actually to withdraw from this co partnership, and be locked up in the county jail therefore, it would be the abolition of slavery in America"(). Thoreau encourages disobeying unjust laws in order to change them. Eventually, he stops paying his poll tax for six years and is imprisoned. Acting as an individual by disobeying unjust laws is what will change the laws. When the individual follows its conscious, or what Emerson would call "individual genius," the universal truth would be apparent that unjust laws should not be followed. Thoreau refuses to let the system of government define the individual and supports individual genius through individual action and protest against unjust laws.

Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman's poetry contains the same themes of Emerson but writes in a more concrete way opposed to abstract theories. Dickinson writes mainly of the self-reliant, private individual. Many of Dickinson's poems such as, "I Died for Beauty" and "Because I Could Not Stop for Death," deal with immortality. She views death as private thing that everyone goes through alone, isolating everyone. In contrast, Whitman portrays a more democratic side of the universal self. He differs from Emerson believing that society is inspirational to the individual opposed to drowning out the individual thought. The Poem, "Song of Myself" says everyone is an individual but differences should not separate everyone. "My tongue, every atom of my blood, form'd from this soil, this air, Born here of parents born here from parents the same and their parents the same." Whitman believes the differences between each individual are not important because the same universe created everyone. However he does realize the importance of not conforming to everyone when saying, "I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard"(6). Whitman speaks through is individual genius even if what he says is not agreed upon. Emerson's Self Reliance influenced both poets to speak their universal truths through their poetry.

Frederick Douglass' autobiography was not knowingly written with the influence of Emerson but is living proof of the philosophy of self-reliance. Douglass lived a much different life from Emerson, being born into slavery and witnessing humanity being stripped away from fellow slaves. Slaves would be whipped, beaten, and sometimes even shot. After witnessing his own aunt beaten as a young boy, Douglass comes to the realization, more similar Whitman, that everyone shares a universal human nature. This is more democratic compared to Emerson's more individualistic idea, believing all men are equal. Douglass determined to dedicate his life to the emancipation of all slaves does also compare with Emerson later on in his life. By befriending other boys in his neighborhood, Douglass learns to read and write. He finds this as a necessity to speak universal truths and express his own genius and be credible to others. Douglass compares with Emerson through his actions but differs in the life that he lived.

"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles"(). These last two lines from "Self Reliance" essay represent Emerson's individualistic concepts. Emerson values the equal individual that is in touch with their universal genius. Thoreau promotes this individuality and non-conformity through civil disobedience. Through poetry, Dickinson and Whitman speak their own genius. Whitman thinks more democratically while Dickinson values the private individual. Fredrick Douglass is proof of finding his own genius and universal truths and uses these concepts to help free himself and fellow slaves of the deprivation of universal humanity that all men deserve. Though these writers may ultimately be trying to convey different messages, all contain the theme of self-reliance and influence of Emerson.

The Joy Luck Club

Setting

There are many settings that create a certain mood and atmosphere. One of which can be found in The Twenty-Six Malignant Gates under Rose Hsu's account. Rose was describing her relationship with Ted. How their relationship started and how it was coming to a close. There was a sense of tension, frustration and confusion in that segment of the book. It reveals the truth in the saying that "love is blind". From the beginning, Rose felt that this man, Ted, swept her off her feet and carried her into paradise. Ted had always been the dominant of the two. He was always making the decisions on everything. Rose just stood by and agreed with whatever he thought was best. After Ted's one fatal mistake, he started to change. He wanted Rose to make the decisions for him. As one would think, this sudden change would be like a culture shock to her. It's difficult for one be accustomed to certain styles and certain rules then one day is forced to change them.

This part of the book is significant because it can relate to many people. Teenagers can relate to this kind of situation. For most of their childhood, students have been in the same environment with the same friends. Once high school hits, their lives turn away from their normal way of life. It's a culture shock to them. They're used to being in their own closed environment when suddenly they have learn a new way of life and adjust/adapt to their new surroundings. Change is a part of life, without it no one can survive.

Characters

There are many characters that I could choose to analyze. One of them is June Woo. June was the daughter of Suyuan Woo. In the novel she is confronted with her mother's death. Before her mother's death, June never thought much about her mother. She never got the chance to know what was inside her mother's heart. She never got the chance to know her hopes and dreams. It was not until after her mother's death when she realized whom her mother really was. Her mother would spend hours trying to find a certain talent that would make her a prodigy. That talent was never found. June feared that she was a failure to her mother. She never knew until after, that she was her mother's long-cherished wish. June seems to be one of those characters that have a humble heart. An example of this was in the crab dinner celebrating the Chinese New Year. June was second to the last to choose a crab. Even though one crab was better than the other, she chose the worse one. Her mother later said, " Only you pick that crab. Nobody else take it. I already know this. Everybody else want best quality. You thinking different." (p.4)

Another character I would like to analyze is Ying-Ying St. Clair. She has been through a long and tiresome life. She has a strong belief in Chinese superstition. She was born the year of the tiger and so she inherited its characteristics. A tiger has two colors, orange-gold and black. The orange represents Ying-Ying's headstrong and independent side. She used this part of herself before her first marriage. The black represents how she was after her first marriage, reserved and secretive. Her first marriage collapsed before her. She married a crude man whom she learned to love. Before their child was even born, her husband left her for an opera singer. She has undergone many tragedies that have left her with hurtful scars. It is these scars that she will finally open to her family. Ying-Ying said that, "when my daughter looks at me, she sees a small old lady. That is because she sees only with her outside eyes. She has no chuming, no inside knowing of things. If she had chuming, she would see a tiger lady. And she would have careful fear." (p.8)

Theme

One major theme of the novel is how difficult it is for immigrants to pass on their heritage and culture to their American-born children. This novel has many themes that teach the readers a lesson. In this novel, the mothers have endured many hardships for the sake of their children. Their hopes and dreams have been given to their children, though they don't realize it. The mothers in this book struggle to keep their family heritage alive so that their children would have something to be proud of and pass on to their children. However, their children seem to have little interest in learning about their heritage. They would rather be more "American" than be more "Chinese." As the novel progresses, the children learn about what hardships their mothers had to confront and it is until then that they learn to accept their culture.

Quotations

"…I knew at exactly what point their faces would fall when my seemingly simple and childlike strategy would reveal itself as a devastating and irrevocable course. I loved to win." (p.187)

This quote reveals a lot from Waverly Jong. It not only reveals her expertise on chess but it also reveals her character. Through this quote the reader can sense that Waverly is a character of power. She likes to be in control of every situation. The reader later finds out that Waverly becomes a successful tax accountant. Her character seems to be strong-willed and selfish. While growing up, her mother has struck her down numerous times with words. As a "ricochet" to it, she strikes other people down with words to make herself feel better.

"And on that day, I showed Second Wife the fake pearl necklace she had given me and crushed it under my foot. And on that day, Second Wife's hair began to turn white. And on that day, I learned how to shout."(p. 7)

An-Mei Hsu is the mother of Rose. She has always shown great strength of character. This quote took place at An-Mei's mother's funeral. Her mother had killed herself by eating too much opium. Others thought that she wanted to stage her death like Second Wife did, but An-Mei knew that that wasn't the reason. She believed that her mother purposely killed herself to give An-Mei strength. After her mother's death, she asserts her identity and is able to raise her voice against being used by others. She is one of the few characters that understood their place in life. This quote is one of many that show An-Mei's strength and courage.

"Of course you can be prodigy, too," my mother told me when I was nine. "You can be best at anything. What does Auntie Lindo know? Her daughter, she is only best tricky." (p.141)

This quote reveals the rivalry between two best friends. Lindo and Suyuan are constantly using their daughters to compete against each other. It's as if they were long-time competitors in a boxing match. Except now their older and using their daughters to fight for them. Lindo is the type of person who thinks highly of herself. She likes to stay in control and is a dominant character in this novel. Suyuan is the type of person who doesn't want to give up. She is very ambitious and learns that even if her daughter may not be a prodigy she has a good heart.

Although first published almost 00 years ago, the novels of Jane Austen have retained their popularity around the world. It is not difficult to find the reasons for their enduring appeal. Miss Austen wrote about universal themes, such as the joy and pain of love, the pursuit of happiness, and the need to be accepted by society. Her first novel published was Sense and Sensibility in 1811, but her best-known work, Pride and Prejudice, was written around fifteen years earlier. Although originally rejected for publication, the novel, and its intelligent heroine, have come to hold a place among the great classics of English literature.

I. Life Experience of Jane Austen

Jane Austen was born on the 16th of December 1775 at the parsonage of Steventon in Hampshire, a village where much of the inspiration for her novels was found and most of her life-long friendships were cemented. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. Her father, Reverend George, was a rector and her mother, Cassandra Leigh, was a dry humorist, and for fifty years master of Balliol, Oxford. Her childhood was happy. Austen's closest relationship, one that would endure throughout her life, was with her beloved only sister, Cassandra. In 178, Jane and Cassandra went briefly to be taught by a Mrs Cawley (the sister of one of their uncles). They were brought home after an infectious disease broke out in Southampton. In 1785-1786 Jane and Cassandra went to the Abbey boarding school in Reading, England, which apparently bore some resemblance to Mrs. Goddard's casual school in Emma. This was Jane Austen's only education outside her family. Within their family, the two girls learned drawing, to play the piano etc. Her home was full of books and she and her family were all avid readers. Many friends and her parents encouraged both their children's intellectual interests and their passion for producing and performing in amateur theatricals.

From about the time she was twelve years old, Austen began writing spirited parodies of the popular Gothic and sentimental fiction of the day for the amusement of her family. Chock-full of stock characters, vapid and virtuous heroines, and improbable coincidences, these early works reveal in nascent form many of her literary gifts particularly her ironic sensibility, wit, and gift for comedy. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. Jane wrote her Juvenilia from 1787 to 17; they include many humorous parodies of the literature of the day, such as Love and Friendship and are collected in three manuscript volumes. Attempts at more sustained, serious works began around 174 with a novel in letters¡ªa popular form at the time¡ªcalled Lady Susan, which was later revised and entitled Northanger Abbey, and in the years immediately following with two more epistolary novels¡ªone called Elinor and Marianne, the other First Impressions¡ªthat would evolve into Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.

In late 1800 her father, who was nearly 70, suddenly decided to retire to Bath. In 180 Jane Austen actually sold Northanger Abbey to a publisher, for the far-from-magnificent sum of ¡ê10; however, the publisher chose not to publish it. It was probably toward the end of the Bath years that Jane Austen began The Watsons, but this novel was abandoned in fragmentary form.

After her father's death in 1805, they moved from Bath, first to Southampton, and then in 180 to Chawton. She resumed her literary activities soon after returning into Hampshire, and revised Sense and Sensibility, which was accepted in late 1810 or early 1811 by a publisher. It appeared anonymously on October. There were at least two fairly favorable reviews, and the first edition eventually turned a profit of ¡ê140 for her. Encouraged by this success, Jane Austen turned to revising First Impressions, a.k.a. Pride and Prejudice. Between the time Pride and Prejudice was accepted for publication and the time it actually appeard, she wrote Mansfield Park and Emma.

Though all her novels were concerned with courtship, love, and marriage, Austen never married. There is some evidence that she had several flirtations with eligible men in her early twenties, and speculation that in 180 she agreed to marry the heir of a Hampshire famil but then changed her mind. Austen rigorously guarded her privacy, and after her deathm her family censored and destroyed many of her letters. In 1816, as she worked to complete her novel Persuasion, Austen's health began to fail. She continued to work, preparing Northanger Abbey for publication, and began a light-hearted, satirical work called Sanditon which she never finished. She died at the age of forty-two on July 18, 1817, in the arms of her beloved sister, Cassandra.

In her own way Austen's work signified break with the Gothic and sentimental novels that had long been fashionable, in which heroines were always virtuous, romance was always sentimentalized, and unlikely but convenient coincidences and acts of God always occurred to bring about the dramatic climax. Instead Austen represented the ordinary world of men and women as it ¨Csometimes mundanely¡ªwas a place where love and romance were constrained by economics and human imperfecton; where women had distinct and often sparkling personalities; where characters were never simply food or evil but more complicated amalgams, reflecting both their own moral nature and the virtues and failings of the families and society that shaped them.
