The story "Araby" taken from James Joyce's Dubliners is essentially about a young boy who is youthfully blind to the environment around him in love and life, and then roused by adulthood in his atmospheric surroundings. Everything about this story is sightless the streets, the houses, the people, and especially our young main character. The atmosphere surrounding him provides the young boy with un-truths and false dreams.

The short story begins with, " North Richmond Street, being blind"(15), blind is used here to mean dead end; the street in which the main character finds himself living on is described here as dead, unsighted. The houses are then described with animated qualities "Detached from its neighbors…conscious of decent lives within them…gazed at one another with brown imperturbable faces" (15). North Richmond Street is described allegorically and allows one a first glimpse into the world of the boy. Those who are aware, un-dead to the world, would feel dispirited and threatened by North Richmond Street, however the boys aunt and uncle do not feel in jeopardy, but are inconspicuously complacent.

The environment of blindness expands from a common view of the street and its residents to the boys own personal relationships. The uncles failure to arrive home in time for the boy to go to the bazaar while it is still open is due to a lack of understanding or empathy on the uncle' s part. The uncle has most likely been out drinking at a nearby pub, as Joyce reflects his characters doing throughout his stories, inattentive and unmoved by the boys restlessness and angst. The boy waits long into the evening in the imperturbable house. The house, like the aunt and uncle, is a reflection of people that are good, but constricted in their positions and in their principles. The consequence of such a setting is an atmosphere secluded and unsighted.

In this environment, the boy comes upon his first love, and begins to have sweet idealistic dreams. The boy sees not reality amid the curses of labourers(16), jostled by drunken men and bargaining women(16), as he carries his aunts parcels while she shops in the market place, he imagines that he carries not parcels, but a chalice through a throng of foes(16). The noises converged in a single sensation of life(16) and in a coming together of romantic and sacred symbols he creates for himself a spellbindingly perfect young woman. The setting in this scene depicts the harsh reality of life which the boy chooses to blindly ignore.

The boy finally wakes to the world around him. The cheap glitziness of the bazaar, which in the boy's mind had been an Oriental enchantment, rips his blindness away from him and leaves him facing reality, actual and cruel. The bazaar is now dark and bare; it flourishes by the same means as the market place (two men were counting money on a salver(1)); love is epitomized as a vacant, transient flirtation.

Araby is a story of first love; even more, it is a representation of a world that resist sight and reality. Although so much of the story points to "detached" "imperturbable" imagery, the boy saw more than this in his surroundings, in his love. Thus setting in this story becomes the true subject, personifying an atmosphere of paralysis for which the young boy's dreams are no match. Realizing this, the boy takes his first step into adulthood, just as many of Joyce's character's find themselves doing in Dubliners. "The Sisters", "An Encounter", and "Araby" all tell stories of childhood, and at the end the child in some way sees the atmosphere around him through new eyes, less blinded by dreams and fantasies of childhood, stepping forward toward life as an adult. In "The Sisters", death is an awakening experience for the young boy, as in "The Encounter" an environment filled with insecurity and fear opens his young eyes. Each of these stories shares the common bond of youthful blindness and an atmosphere that awakens, for the first time, truthful sight.

Transmitters have helped out mankind in many great ways. It is one of the most important parts of communication. Transmitters are found in many different thing, like radios. There are certain parts of a radio that allow these transmitters to do their job.

There are three essential parts of a radio transmitter. The oscillation generation, this converts electric power into oscillations of a chosen type radio frequency. Then there are amplifiers that are used for increasing the intensity of there oscillations. The final part is the transducer that converts all the information to be transmitted into continuous waves. An example of a transducer is the microphone, because it takes in the sounds, and allows them to enter the device changed into understandable waves.

There are other things like the antennas that fall into the category of a modulator, which receives waves transmitted from somewhere else allowing them to enter the device.

An oscillator consists of a quartz-crystal that vibrated to generate the transmission. These transitions are carried by tank or tuned circuits that have certain capacity for carrying these waves. Each crystal has its own shape to get the frequency required for the transmission. They must be near perfect to be acceptable, or they will not work. These crystals are for low frequencies that only go up to about 10 MHz. When needing higher frequencies magnetrons, and varying types of klystrons are required.

Custom writing service can write essays on I dont hav an essay

Modulation is the different way of transmitting these waves. This is where the choice of fm and am becomes important. Fm stands for frequency modulations, which means that there is a set frequency for the transmission. Am stands for amplitude modulation which a set amplitude for the transmission. These waves are transmitted to your radio to be received by you antenna, or some sort of a transducer. A simple for of modulation is the Morse code, where a continuous wave is interrupted by the machine that causes them.

All parts of the transmitter are important. If any of these were mission the transitions would never occur. The oscillator makes these transitions possible by conversion. Transducers that allow the signal to be carried and the receivers like modulators, and antennas that allow the signal to be received.

Order your To Kill a Mockingbird: Real courage is not a man with a gun in his hand paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! "…Real courage is not a man with a gun in his hand…"1 This single statement, made by Atticus Finch mid-way through To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, summarises the core message of the book. If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is basically about a court case of a Negro in racist times, seen through the eyes of a child. However, the story strikes a cord with so many people not because of it's subject matter, serious as it is, but of the ideals of a central Atticus Finch. Like an American version of Confucius, peppered throughout the book is snippets of philosophy, and the aforementioned one about courage I believe is one of the key ideas the author wished us to remember.

So what is courage, exactly? It is more than a person's weapons or means of defence. A man with a gun is no more courageous than a man with a stick, or in the case of the novel, a good argument. Anyone can point a weapon and pull the trigger, but it takes true guts to stand up in front of a group of people and do or say something that conflicts with the norm, something most certainly would not agree with.

"…The courts appointed Atticus to defend him. Atticus aimed to defend him. That's what they didn't like about it. It was confusing…" Here is a clear example of how Atticus defied attitudes of the time. Through the narrative we can gather that in the past cases with negroes would be delegated to trainees needing practice. You weren't supposed to care what happened to your client if he was black. You weren't supposed to even try to win the case. To do otherwise was to be condemned to instant social isolation, and even resentment from the narrow-minded community.

If all these things were piled against him, why did Atticus do what he did? What inspired him to be courageous? Once again, the answer lies with his personal beliefs.

Do my essay on To Kill a Mockingbird: Real courage is not a man with a gun in his hand CHEAP !

"…Before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience…" As shown here, what was right and just was more important to Atticus than what others thought. Was it almost as though guilt drove him? That he simply could not live with himself if he had just gone along with what people expected of him?

For the children, especially early in the book, courage has a different meaning. Courage is to touch the feared Radley house, face up to unfair teachers, to pass Ms Dubose's house without responding to her cutting remarks. Yet in a sense, although these problems are seemingly insignificant it is very real to them, and they handle it the best they can. It takes more guts for Scout to stop fighting the other children at school to succumb to her rage. Anyone can hurl an insult at another, but not all can simply walk away, head held up high.

What is real courage, if not a man with a gun in his hand? From what is displayed from the text, real courage is standing up for what you believe in, being unswayed from your view even if it's the easy thing to do. Courage is not a physical thing but rather mental, an unshakeable part of one's psyche. In the court case, the outcome may have not changed had Atticus not acted courageously, but sometimes the effort, doing your best is just as important.

Real courage is not, and never has been, a man with a gun in his hand. Real courage is a state of mind, and in such war-torn times it is easy to forget. It is easy to start a conflict, but to prevent one from happening? Well, that takes real courage.

The Great Gatsby and the Jazz Age

Published in 15, The Great Gatsby is the definitive American novel of the Jazz Age, the prosperous years following the First World War. After two successful novels and dozens of popular short stories, Fitzgerald set out to write something "new," "extraordinary," "beautiful," and "simple." Few readers of The Great Gatsby would dispute that he achieved his goals. Gatsby was an achievement that placed Fitzgerald forever in the canon of American literature.

GatsbyStill a Sexy Story

While The Great Gatsby is representative of a particular time, which seems long ago, it is by no means an "historical novel". The book maintains the timeless elements of a great storyglamour, money, romance, and murder. Its characters are attractive, its setting romantic, and its plot thoroughly engaging.

Write your THe great gatsby research paper

The Great Gatsby recounts one man's effort to win the heart of his long lost love. Along the way we go from intimate luncheon to rollicking all night party, from the ash-gray valley of the working class to the glittering heights of the extremely rich. We meet a fascinating cast of characters and we hold our breath as the story reaches its inevitable, tragic climax.

The American Dream, Class Conflict and Disillusionment

Like all great literature, The Great Gatsby works on many levels. On the surface it reads as a tragic love story of the Jazz Age. But between the plot points, the book speaks to many important themes in American life including idealism, aspiration, and disillusionment with the American dream.

Jay Gatsby, the novel's protagonist, is often seen as an archetype of the American dreamer Self-made man sets out to achieve ambitious, seemingly impossible goals. Gatsby believes unconditionally in his dream and he pursues it with the energy, the enthusiasm, and the unabashed idealism that mirror those of the young nation. Through hard work and dedication, Gatsby has accumulated riches and status. But like America, the foundation of his wealth is not beyond reproach.

The book is also a study in class conflict. Fitzgerald carefully selects characters that represent different elements in society. We have old money in the form of Tom and Daisy Buchanan, the nouveau riche are embodied in Gatsby, Myrtle Wilson and her husband George symbolize the aspiring lower middle class and the working poor respectively. The drama of the story can be scene as a microcosm of American life.

On another level, Fitzgerald addresses the more philosophical and disconcerting realization that our dreams are often illusions, founded on romantic ideals easily crushed by harsh reality.

First Person Narrator

Fitzgerald employed a limited, first person point of view to tell his story. The narrator's detached position gives him the chance to retell as well as comment on the characters and events. A mid-westerner in New York, Nick Carraway stands outside the society he observes. We witness the romantic affairs that form the core of the novel from a presumed impartial view.

Lyrical Prose Style

There is no doubt about Fitzgerald's gift for language his prose is polished and poetic. Nowhere is Fitzgerald's dedication to his craft and the evidence of his continuous re-writing more apparent. Here's one example of his lyrical prose style

…and orchestras which set the rhythm of the year, summing up the sadness and suggestiveness of life in new tunes. All night the saxophones wailed the hopeless comment of the Beale Street Blues while a hundred pairs of golden and silver slippers shuffled in the shining dust.

The Novel's Place in History

While Fitzgerald was disappointed in the sales of the bookhe expected to make much more money than he didhe was pleased with his work and its critical reception. Eventually he sold the film and theatrical rights. The true brilliance of this book was not fully recognized until after Fitzgerald's death in 140. It has since become one of the most analyzed works of American literature and continues to be a favorite among English teachers and students. A popular film version of the book was made in 174 starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.|An introduction to The Great Gatsby including the style, major themes, and overview.

The ideal of the American Dream is based on the fantasy that an individual can achieve success regardless of family history, race, or religion simply by working hard enough. Frequently, "success" is equated with the fortune that the independent, self reliant individual can win. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald examines and critiques Jay Gatsby's particular vision of the 10s American Dream. Though Fitzgerald himself is associated with the excesses of the "Roaring Twenties," he is also an astute social critic whose novel does more to detail society's failure to fulfill its potential than it does to glamorize the "Jazz Age."

As a self-proclaimed "tale of the West," the novel explores questions about...

The Great Gatsby, the first truly Modernist novel to find success in the United States, set the tone for the movement that defined American literature well into the present day. In Modernism, Fitzgerald found a way to define his world that would have been impossible in the Nineteenth-century Victorian style that still dominated American writing. In his style, portrayal of American morality and treatment of his characters, Fitzgerald left the Victorian era behind, creating a Modernist masterwork that still serves as a model for American fiction.

The gritty realism of William James and his contemporaries, and even the light-hearted tone of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, was too limited to allow Fitzgerald...

This database is designed for students in the SLIS who have taken LIBR0 for their continued use during their program. The students will use this database to further their knowledge of information retrieval. Students will be conducting formalized queries. At this level the students are able to articulate the problem clearly.

The types of queries the students will pose will be mainly that of topics and methods of information retrieval. The articles were indexed generously, due to the many ways the student will be researching. The facets of the articles that need to be indexed are terms that are synonymous with information retrieval and the aspects of information retrieval.

Subject Headings Rules

Cheap University Papers on Vocabulary

Our method of design for the 0 database involves the use of subject headings and subdivisions to combine a number of different topics. These combinations can be in no more than two terms a heading and subheading. All terms come from the controlled vocabulary of ERIC descriptors. Terms can be strung together according to the following rules

· The Heading will always be a topic

The heading of the precoordinate term will always contain a topic of the article

· Topics can be subheadings

· Subheadings can also contain topical descriptors in relation to the topic described by the heading if they provide further classification on the field

· A Heading can also be a subheading

Once designated as a heading, an ERIC descriptor can also be utilized as a sub-heading

· Form will always be a subheading, not a heading

The method of presentation of the information, and the way of gathering it, (form) will always be listed as a subheading, and cannot be the main topic of the article

· System names can either be a heading or a subheading

Names of systems mentioned in this database refer to methods of information retrieval, and can either be a heading, if it is the topic of the article, or a subheading, if it refers to a topic presented in the article

· Geography can either be a heading or a subheading

Similar to the LCSH rules on geographic subdivision, topical subject headings can be further delineated by geographic subheadings, or geographic headings may be linked to a topic subheading. A geographic term can only be in the heading of the precoordinate term if it is also the subject (topic) of the article.

There were eight articles in this database that were relevant to the terms cognition and cognitive processes. For precision see the above charts.

After creating the preco terms and searching some changes should be made. It is very difficult to create preco terms. In trying to be generous so that precision would be high almost every heading became a subheading and vice versa. In the three searches conducted on cognition, using a truncated version of cognitive (cogniti) provided the most precision. In addition using a truncated word was the only way in which abstracts were found in the preco field. This leads us to believe that when searching a preco field it is more beneficial to have more than one word to search since in this database the preco field is searched by term rather than words. Using a truncated version of a word left the rest of the phrase open to find abstracts in the preco field.

If this exercise had to be done over, I would choose to have someone other than myself create the preco field. The errors in this section came from me trying to create my preco terms so that my search would be successful, rather than being concerned with the other people would search this database. As we learned in this class, this can be a problem. When the creators of the preco fields take into account what they would be looking for rather than the user model.

English essay Muriel's Wedding

In the film Muriel's wedding film techniques are used to express the themes of the film. Muriel's wedding portrays traditional themes such as relationships between family and friends, the need to belong and the transformation or coming-of-age through classic film media; music, costume, camera angles, actors cast and setting. The film was designed as a comedy, but with serious moments to keep the story down to earth. P.J. Hogan, the director of Muriel's wedding has succeeded in creating a humorous yet meaningful movie, winning best film of 14 from the Australian film institute.

Music is used as the main film device in this movie. The main character, Muriel Heslop, has a childish obsession with the 80's pop group ABBA. This music occurs frequently and addresses the theme of Muriel's transformation into a better person. At the beginning of the movie, when Muriel is at her lowest, she listens to ABBA in her room as an escape from reality. Her bedroom is covered with bridal pictures and ABBA posters, with a child's pink tape player blasting out "dancing queen" as Muriel sings solemnly along.

As the movie goes on ABBA's music is played in times of anticipation of change or to represent Muriel's longing for her transformation. Standing outside the bridal shop Muriel looks up at the wedding dresses, with a look of desire, as an orchestral version of "dancing queen" is played. It creates the mood of Muriel's awe at the majestic scene of the bridal gowns for the audience. Again at Muriel's wedding to David Van Arkle ABBA's music is used to give the audience a taste of Muriel's absolute ecstasy in regards to her marriage. Before Muriel enters to walk down the isle, a women sings "Ave Maria" an older, religious song. As Muriel enters this calm, beautiful scene the music stops, then sounds "I do, I do, I do", a very poppy song by ABBA. David's reaction to Muriel's song choice is "oh Christ, oh god" but Muriel doesn't seem to notice his distain for her as now, in her eyes, she is a real person.

The actors cast and the acting style used all represent the characters being portrayed. Muriel who is a loser in the beginning is overweight with yellow teeth and limp hair. Her mother also is overweight, showing her status in the family and her pathetic character. The four girls cast are thin and attractive, with faces lacking in individuality, with exception of the main girl, Tania. They're acting style is over the top and very stereotypical of that kind of superficial person.

Costume used in this film is very relevant to the time. The four "friends" of Muriel in the beginning of the movie; Tania, Cheryl, Janine and Nicole, are good looking and dressed very fashionably. Muriel however is dressed in large, printed dresses, not hiding her weight problem, with high pony tails and bright red lipstick. She is dressed at the height of bad fashion and stands out from the crowd, especially among her friends. This addresses the theme of Muriel's need to belong and friendship; the importance of friendships to Muriel and how superficial the four girls are.

Nicole and Cheryl comment on her clothes in scene 11, where the girls have decided to tell Muriel she is not welcome to hang out with them anymore "…It's you. We've told you a thousand times how to wear your hair but you never listen", "You never wear the right clothes" and "You embarrass us". Muriel, feeling that she is the one who is lacking something and wanting to belong, replies "I know I'm not normal but I'm trying to change. I'm trying to become more like you…" This shows how important it is to Muriel to have friends and belong to a social group, thinking she is not "normal" for not being liked by these girls.

The costumes of Muriel's mother, Betty in comparison to Muriel's father's mistress, Deidre shows Muriel's father, Bill, breaking away from his family to a more presentable lifestyle. Betty is dressed in track pants and big shirts, while Deidre in tight high collared dresses with too much makeup. Throughout the movie, Muriel's costume changes, showing her transformation. In the first scene she is very overweight, wearing a short leopard print dress and gold hoop earrings. She stands out from the crowd as very unattractive and ever more so from the four girls, who are all dressed in fluffy, pink bridesmaid dresses. As the movie goes on she loses weight and begins to dress better, especially after her new friendship with Rhonda.

She moves to Sydney with Rhonda, changes her name to Mariel and loses some weight. She is soon asked out on her first date by Brice Nobes, an equally clueless boy who asks her out at the video store while she is working. She believes this to be a sign that she has changed and is not worthless anymore. As the movie goes on, Muriel becomes more honest with herself, gets over her bridal obsession and realises the true value of her and Rhonda's friendship. By the end of the movie she is significantly thinner, wearing a well fitting blouse and skirt and looking much more attractive, in comparison to the four superficial "friends" who are dressed in hot pants, tight singlets with teased hair and too much makeup.

The costume also portrays Muriel's individuality. Throughout the whole film she stands out from the crowd, while the four girls all dress and look very similar. By the end of the movie and Muriel's transformation she is far more attractive as an individual than the girls are.
