Order your An Analysis Of Anne Bradstreet's "To My Loving Husband" paper at affordable prices! An extremely important part of the American identity is the Puritans. They sought to be simple, yet religiously and morally strict. Though defying several Puritan beliefs Anne Bradstreet shows her great love for her husband through the uses of imagery, poetic devices, and symbolism.

We can see from the poem the strong feelings Anne has for her husband. In the poem, she shows her devotion to her husband in a smooth and simple manner through imagery. Over and over again she expresses her devotion to him with a repetition of images. One such image is presented in lines 5-7. She states "I prize my love more than whole mines of gold or all the riches that the East doth hold. My love is such that rivers cannot quench…" She states here that she would accept nothing in return for the love that she shares with her husband and that nothing could destroy it. Also in line 1, we can see the togetherness Anne and her husband share as she says the two of them are one. Physically, this is paradox. No two people can be united as one. But spiritually, the two complete each other's life so that, in marriage, they are one.

Anne Bradstreet uses a lot of poetic devices in the poem. Throughout lines 1-, Bradstreet gives their relationship as an example to others with phrases like "If ever two were one," "If ever one were loved by wife," and "If ever wife was happy in a man." In lines 1 and , we see two sound examples of alliteration. The "w" sound is repeated in the phrases "two were one" and "ever wife was." In line 4, she seems boastful of her relationship (not very puritan-like). In lines 5-7, some may view as a hyperbole. In lines 7 and 8 the rhyme is not exact, like all the other lines. In line , there is an example of synaesthesia; there is no way to purchase or pay for true love. In line 11, when the author says, "while we live, in love let's so persevere," we see alliteration of the "w" sounds, alliteration and consonance of the "l" sounds, and alliteration and consonance of the "s" sounds. This allows for the words to flow well. Lines 11 and 1 contain pauses in the middle of the line making the statement more emotional. These pauses are called caesura? Other than poetic devices, words like "thee", "ye", "thy", and "doth" tell us that the poem was written in a 17th century, old-English style.

Last but not least, symbolism. In the th line, she says that his love for her can in no way be repaid. This can be seen as a symbol of how great her love is. In line 10, metonomy is seen with "heavens". When she speaks of the heavens repaying him, heaven is symbolic of God or life. Finally, in line 1 "Then when we live no more, we may live ever," she symbolizes that their love is eternal and after they die, they shall continue loving one another. One puritan belief is that one should not become too emotionally attached to anything. Throughout the poem, we can see that Bradstreet is attached to her husband. In line 4 she calls out to other women in a bragging manner, "Compare with me…if you can." But she later redeems herself in the last three lines. Here she prays to the heaven and speaks of the Puritan life. Maybe all of these symbolize that her love for her husband is greater than her love for God, and that God still remains in her life.

In conclusion, we can plainly see the great love Anne Bradstreet had for her husband; She expresses this through imagery, symbolism, and many other poetic devices. It is left to opinion whether or not she reflected the Puritan lifestyle, but one thing is for sure Anne Bradstreet had a love for her husband that could not be matched by anything on this world.

It is not always the ones usually attributed with immigrants with people rushing over the border in order to get into our welfare system. Anyone who is a refugee from a foreign nation that has been bombed by war, such as people from Kuwait or ethnic Albania, they are people that come to this country and they are immigrants. They are refugees escaping oppression. They may not speak the language here, but that does that mean they do not belong here? They are fleeing their homes because their lives are in grave danger. For us to say, "Well, before we can let you in and save your lives, you have to take learn the English language and you have to pass a history test" would be blatantly wrong. The benefits of diversity are vast and usually overlooked when talking of such issues. Immigration increases our workforce. Many people born in America take things for granted and know their so-called personal worth and thus do not want the jobs they consider beneath them. We need people to fill those positions. And as the immigrants are growing, they must start at a low-level position. Someone needs to be paid minimum wage in order for our economy to exist or at the very least, function. There was a research conducted in Canada where people from America went to Canada and we tracked how they affected the Canadian economy. Now nearly half of those who went to Canada started up their own companies, a common trend in America. They come and they start a new business that might benefit their diversity. And they employ people. This creates more jobs. This creates a larger job market. This creates even more diversity in America. Now many people will argue that America is a melding pot, where all the cultures meld together as one. This image has become someone old-fashioned though. What makes America so special is that we don't have one large Anglo-German-Spani-Fren-Mexi-Russian group. I like to consider it a salad. We don't want everyone to be exactly the same, but instead contribute greatly to the betterment of our nation. It would be much better for all these separate diversities to obtain their natural languages. Let us look at Australia. Australia has seven languages as their national language. They print everything in those seven languages. This does not cause confusion, but instead causes diversity and builds intelligence, combating cultural ignorance. And let us not forget that this nation was built on immigrants. There are very few people who naturally lived here the Native Americans of course. So why are we not speaking Native American Indian? Could it possibly be because the Caucasian Americans killed them? Very few people who still naturally speak Native Americans Indian are alive. And do you know why? Because the Caucasian Americans killed them! Now, what we are saying is that even though we are all immigrants and at some point brought different languages from our native countries, that we are still the least immigrants? How is it fair to build a county on the principles of an open door and suddenly slam the door shut, saying that others are too much immigrant for us? Who are we to say what language is best? English is only the second most spoken language in the world, next to Mandarin Chinese, so why are we not speaking that instead? This bill does not even sate what "American English" is. Is American English "y'all" and "shucks"? Is American English "like, whatever"? Is American English "Wuzzup" and other Ebonics phrases? Even within America, many dialects of English are spoken, so which is the so-called American one? And how will we mandate that every government policy be printed in that form? Will our constitution now read "Us them peeps of the USA, in Order to, like, have a better Union and stuff…" Please! This bill should not pass.

Prejudice was once described by Senator George Aiken when he said, "If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and colour we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon." This quotation could not be more correct. People around the world will have prejudiced views even if there is not anything to discriminate against. This quotation also shows the ignorance and the stupidity that people demonstrate towards variety and diversity. When there are people who hate there is prejudice. Not only do prejudiced outlooks destroy people, they also cause many of conflicts between people, communities and countries. These small conflicts can then inflate and become worldwide issues that influence everybody. There are a great deal of prejudiced feelings in the novel The Chrysalids, and in the film The Power of One. In these works prejudice is a predominate issue and it creates many vital conflicts. After reviewing these works it is easy to see how bigotry leads to pain, sacrifice and hate. Prejudice in The Chrysalids and in The Power of One can be compared in terms of causes, effects and ultimate consequences.

Next, prejudice in The Chrysalids and in The Power of One can be compared in terms of effects. One effect of prejudice that occurs in The Chrysalids is defiance. It is obvious that defiance occurs quite frequently in The Chrysalids. One of the first incidences of defiance was when David did not turn in Sophie for her blasphemy. The inspector told David that "concealment of a blasphemy - not reporting a human deviation is a very serious thing" which shows us that disregarding the laws in Waknuk is unacceptable (51). Defiance occurred often in The Chrysalids because the laws in Waknuk were very difficult to abide by and many people disagreed with them. Consequently, because people disagreed with the laws they were more likely to break them. Similarly, defiance is also an effect of prejudice in The Power of One. An example of defiance in this film could be seen when PK began to teach the black people. During the time period that this movie took place black people were not allowed to learn how to read and write. PK along with a few other white people disagreed with the law. They felt that the only way that black people were ever going to be able to pass knowledge on to one another would be if white people taught them. As a result, PK set up an illegal program in which he would teach the black people how to read and write. This showed how unreasonable laws cause people to break them. PK disagreed with the law that was set so he broke it. Therefore, defiance of the government occurs when one has a strong opinion against the laws set. Another effect of prejudice in The Chrysalids is conflict. The people of Waknuk were prejudice towards anything that deviates from the true image. This causes many conflicts for David and the other telepaths. For example when David was having a conversation with his Uncle Axel about Anne his uncle says, "It is too dangerous Davie. Remorse, abnegation, self sacrifice, the desire for purification all pressuring upon her"(5). This quotation showed the struggle that David and the other telepaths were having with the fact that Anne wished to marry someone who is not a telepath. This meant that Anne would most likely tell her husband that she and the others are telepaths and then they would all be discovered. This conflict took place because of the prejudiced feelings that were directed towards anything that was different. If the people in Waknuk were not prejudiced, then David would not have been having such a problem with Anne marrying a norm. Likewise, conflict is also an effect of prejudice in The Power of One. An example of this was the fighting between PK and the boys at school. PK was the only English boy at his school full of Dutch students. When the war started, the English were fighting against Hitler. Unfortunately, the Dutch were in favour of Hitler. Therefore, because PK was English the Dutch boys picked on him. This example shows how prejudiced feelings cause conflict between people. If the boys were not prejudiced towards the English then PK would not have been harassed. An additional effect of prejudice in The Chrysalids would be dehumanization. Sophie depicted the dehumanization that transpired in The Chrysalids "You can't understand the awful emptiness that's waiting all around us here"(167). This quotation describes the Fringes, which was the place that people who were different were sent to. It proves how prejudice causes dehumanization through unfair treatment and abuse. In a similar manner, dehumanization is also an effect of prejudice in The Power of One. An example of the dehumanization that occurred in The Power of One would be when the black people were sent to camps, beaten and used as slaves. All of these acts demoralize people. They make them feel as if they are worthless and they separate them from the ordinary people. These acts are carried out because of prejudiced feelings towards the black people. In conclusion, prejudice in The Chrysalids and in The Power of One can be compared in terms of effects.

The belief that the order of things in one's life is already decided and that people's lives are determined by this "greater power" is called fate. Many people called fatalists, believe in this and believe that they have no power in determining their futures. Others believe that coincidence explains the way their lives and the lives of others turn out. Although fate plays a big role in the forming of the plot in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy portrays chance and coincidence as continuously having more significant roles throughout the novel. Three such coincidences were quite influential and had large effects on Tess's future.

Right from the start of the novel, the theme of coincidences and chance is very evident. Upon returning to his home one evening, Durbeyfield meets a man named Parson Tringham who tells him that the Durbeyfield family is the "lineal representative of the ancient and knightly family of the d'Urbervilles, who . . . came from Normandy with William the Conqueror."(1) If Parsons had not have told Jack about his lineage, his life would have followed his same lazy habits and the events to follow may not have happened. This news causes Jack to tell his family and it changes his approach to the way his family will live. Joan Durbeyfield, John's wife, recalls that a man by the name of d'Urberville lives not far from their home and might be able to help them in their hard times, seeing as how he sounds related to them. The chance that somebody having the same last name and living close to the Durbeyfields is rare. If Mrs. Durbeyfield knew about these "relatives" living nearby, why had they not gone to visit them or ask for help earlier? Nonetheless, the Durbeyfields seek help from the d'Urbervilles by sending their eldest daughter Tess to visit.

Once Tess goes to seek help, chance and coincidence start to take control over Tess's life. The family sends their eldest daughter, Tess to see if the d'Urberville family would help them, with side hopes of Tess possibly marrying a gentleman and restoring their family's status. Had Tess stayed at home instead of going to the d'Urberville home, she would not have met Alec nor would she have bore his child out of wedlock and her life would have been completely different. Tess would still have her innocence and the chance at having a better life than the one she now has. Tess's shame of having a baby out of wedlock overtook her and she left her birthplace of Marlott to find work at a dairy called Talbothay's. Tess uses her escape for a much needed break from all the stresses and hardships in her life. This change in scenery seems to be what Tess needs in order to get away from the pain Alec has caused her. Her trip to Talbothay's represents a change for Tess and a new life.

The change Talbothay's brings for Tess is what she needs in order to bring order and control back into her life. But by chance Tess meets Angel Clare who she ends up falling in love with and she accepts his marriage proposal. The coincidence that Tess met the guy of her dreams while trying to get away from the relationship scene is ironic. This coincidence seems too good to be true to Tess and she realizes that her past is important for the success of this relationship. "Declare the past to him by word of mouth she could not, but there was another way. She sat down and wrote . . . a succinct narrative of those events of three or four years ago, put it into an envelope, and directed it to Clare."(164) By pure chance, her letter not only slipped underneath his door and into his room, but it also slipped underneath his carpet where he could not see it which causes some problems since the wedding is coming up. Had Angel seen the letter, the wedding would not have happened. Because Angel did not see the letter, the relationship is not a true one and Tess is haunted by her secret.

Custom Essays on Who's in Control of Your Life?

Tess's life is becoming more hectic again and she does not seem to have any control over it. When Tess finally does confesses to Angel, he does forgive her and leaves for Brazil, not allowing for contact between Tess and him. Tess took a chance in telling Angel the truth about her past and it backfired on her. Angel is acting selfish for not forgiving Tess when she forgave him for his earlier affair. Tess runs into Alec d'Urberville, while Angel is in Brazil, who notices her and pursues her for some time and to make matters worse, during the time of this coincidental run in with Alec, Tess's mother becomes ill and her father soon dies. This coincidence of Tess's father dying at just the right moment for Alec to marry her and Angel returning only a little after leads to the murder of Alec d'Urberville. It leads to Tess's murder of Alec because of the strife he causes in her life and, ultimately, her death.

Through each and every one of these coincidences, Tess's life changed quite dramatically. Each event that occurred by complete chance left Tess in a predicament where she was compelled to take control and do something to improve the situation. Some people may have believed that all of these incidents were Tess's fate, but Thomas Hardy does not believe so. He believes that life contains many coincidences that lead one to another. Every coincidence or occurrence that came along forced Tess to rethink her situation and draw up the courage to face her problems and overcome them. The consequences that came, due to her decisions were all ones that Tess brought upon herself.

During the past years education has played a great role in American politics. This is due to the fact that the performance of primary and secondary school students is far away from other countries in most of the subjects. Although a small improvement has occurred in test scores during the last 5 years, this slight increase has also urged demands for reforms in order to achieve a higher level of public education. In contrast with other countries, the United States has a decentralized educational system. This means that the government's role is to complement the state and local educational programs. A proper education reform would involve at least two steps. Firstly, all involvement should be ended in the issue by the federal government. The second change must be done at the state level, to improve the circumstances of local educational facilities and establish the same rights and opportunities for every student. President Bush's education bill deals with only the first point, and goes in exactly the wrong direction.

The federal government calls for an annual national test to determine what kids learn. The test is called the National Assessment of Education Progress. It measures overall scores within schools, not scores of individual students. The weakest among the students dictate the pace and method, so this system limits the performance of good students in order to raise the scores of the worst students. It also states that measuring by testing is the only way to know whether all children are learning. In his article, Karp states that certainly this is the case because there is information that says that standardized tests are not appropriate and there are other ways to measure children such as portfolios "Linking federal funds and sanctions to test scores will also turn more tests from diagnostic tools into high stakes exams. As happened in Texas, such policies will encourage narrowly-targeted test coaching and curriculum pollution." Schools must inspire children to be creative, responsible citizens. Test scores arent the only measure of success.

Bush's plan deals with the idea of vouchers. If the schools fail again and again, the students are permitted to take the equivalent of the federal subsidy and use it at private schools. From now on, the federal government will be giving direct aid to private schools via individual students. On the one hand this will allow the federal government to encroach in the affairs of private schools, skipping state laws and the independence that parents demand of these schools. On the other hand, taking away money from poorly performing schools will cause inequality. States that dont show improved test scores will risk a reduction in federal funds. Schools whose students perform poorly will lose resources instead of receiving badly needed funding for things that would actually improve both learning and test scores. A better plan would be to give money to these schools so that they can improve their education and all children have an equal opportunity to learn. By taking money away, they are hurting these children, not helping them.

The centerpieces of the Bush's educational program are annual state-wide mandatory testing and the idea of founding schools depending on these test results. Apparently, these sanctions will raise the inequalities between the poor and the wealthier students. Instead of trying to standardize the educational system more attention should be paid to educational infrastructures, such as smaller classroom sizes, better equipment, greater variety of school programmes and qualified teachers.
