Doe Season Andys Epiphany

The process of finding out who one is can be very turbulent and confusing. Through growing up one goes through so many different changes in terms of ones personality and deciding who they are and what they want to be. The little girl in David Kaplans Doe Season goes through one of these changes, as do many other adolescents confused about who they are, and finds out that there are some aspects of a persons identity that cannot be changed no matter how hard he/she tries.

Andy is a nine-year-old girl who doesnt want to grow up to be a woman. When she talks of the sea and how she remembers her mother loving it and how much she hated it is a clue that she prefers to be a boy. The sea is symbolic of womanhood and the forest is symbolic of manhood. Andy expresses extreme distaste for the sea and a curiosity of the woods. She never really admits to liking the woods but the way she refers to it is always as if shes fascinated by it, but she doesnt know much about it. Therefore, she must go hunting as a test to see if she belongs. To contrast how she feels about the sea and the forest, she refers to the forest as deep and immense, while she refers to the sea as huge and empty. Andy sees the mans world as a wonderful, fascinating world while she sees the womans world as meaningless and empty.

Andy sees the changes into a woman on the horizon and she is scared by these changes because they are very confusing to her. This is why she trys to do man-type things such as hunting. To further confuse her, her father supports her striving to be part of the mans world. He refers to her as Andy even though her real name is Andrea and takes her with him to do manly things.

Custom Essays on Doe Season: Andy's Epiphany

The reader first gets a hint of the fact that Andy is unable to be a member of the male fraternity when she expresses her disliking of Mac. Mac is representational of the typical boy in this story. Andy thinks that Mac is stupid and is annoyed by all of the pranks and teasing he submits her to. This is an extension of her femininity, even though she doesnt quite grasp that fact. The next instance where she feels out of place in this man-world is, when at lunch, they are conversing about deer. She makes the comment that she sees a deer once behind their house and Charlie Spoon tells her that was because it is not hunting season. They then converse about how deer know when and when it isnt hunting season and start laughing about it. This whole conversation confuses Andy and makes her feel out of place. Later on, when they set up tents, she has to sleep in a tent with Mac. The things that Mac talks to her about before they go to sleep make her feel uncomfortable. First he asks her if shes ever seen someones pecker and that makes her feel uncomfortable. Mac then talks to her about gutting a deer and it makes her think about how it would feel if someone did that to her. Two times during the story Andy sees deer. One time when she is gathering firewood and another when she takes a walk on her own. The reason she is able to see these deer is because the deer dont think she poses any threat. Due to her feminine nature, the deer can tell that she is a girl and dont think she means to do them harm. This is what leads to Andy to ultimately realizing that she doesnt want to be part of the male society. The last time she sees a deer she leads everyone to it. Her dad then talks her into shooting the deer. When Andys father begins to gut the deer Andy has her epiphany. At that point she realizes that she cant become part of the male society. This causes her to go running from everyone as she is forced into her nature and forced to become part of the inevitable, female society.

Andys father takes her hunting as a test. The hunting trip is an initiation test to see if she has what it takes to be accepted into the mans world. She fails the test when she feels bad about shooting the deer and runs in the other direction when her father and Charlie Spoon go to gut the deer. The fact that she doesnt like shooting the deer, which is the main goal of hunting, is evidence that she doesnt like the male world.

In addition to her physical epiphany, Andy has an epiphany on a higher lever. The hunting trip leads Andy to the realization that even if she likes the male world, there are some aspects of who she is that she cant change regardless of how she feels about them and how hard she tries to change them. Andy embraces the male world as an attempt to escape from becoming a part of the female world only to be rejected by the male world through a humiliating experience that teaches her that she does not fit in. This rejection is what makes her realize that there are immutable changes about people. She cant be male material because of her nature and genetic makeup.

Andy is a girl who is scared of what a females world is and the confusion that goes along with becoming a female. This reaction to the female world drives her to try and be a part of the male world. Andy realizes at the end of the story that she doesnt want to be a part of the male world. She also realizes that no matter what she does, she cant deny her gender and that in some aspects a person must be satisfied with his/her identity.

The Meiji restoration reshaped the way of Japanese living, culture and industry. Clothes, buildings, labour, speech and military were all modernised due to the adapted Western influence. The vision of hope in war was given to the neighbouring Asian countries.

In the time of the Meiji revolution, Japanese culture was reformed to a large extent. The cultural ways of the Japanese society were completely changed when the country of Japan was forced to open its walls to the outside world. The cause of this was a letter from the US President sent via a US Naval Commodore, Matthew Perry. Perry also offered the country a mechanical toy train and industrial ideas that could help Japan modernise their country.

The firm social structure of the Japanese people was completely eliminated and instead substituted with the law that all people were to be treated equally and demand equal rights. The Japanese adapted Western speech, clothes and foods that became standard behaviour of the people. The Samurais' were pulled down to the level of everybody else and were no longer being funded with rations.

Cheap Custom Essays on Meiji RestorationWith all the positives there was bound to be set backs for the nation. The land for the farmers was now dealt out evenly between them. This made work quite stressful as most of them had to cultivate more than they started with. All citizens soon realised that these sacrifices had to be made to improve their industry.

Upgrading the Japanese industry was the main objective of the Meiji and came with great expenses to the nation. Railways, electricity, textile mills and mines were created in conjunction with the background Western ideas. The Japanese became major manufacturers of silk and silk products. The earnings were then used to construct the railway that travelled from Tokyo to Yokohama. To achieve such things adults and children were forced to work a gruelling 1 hours a day in terrible mining conditions. The worst place known for this was Battleship Island. The circumstances were dreadful, with families having to live in octopus dens and share only a few beds between them. The miners were informed that any escape attempt would end in death.

One of the most common problems that immigrants faced when they arrive in their new country is how to assimilate into that country's tradition and values without losing your sense of identity. In the story "El Patron" Senor Matinez after immigrating to the United States wanted to instill the traditional Mexican values of war and the love for his country into his son Tito but Tito haven been born and raised in the United States have learnt America's value of individualism. The story deals with the conflicts between father and son and also cultural conflicts.

"El Patron" presents a common problem amongst immigrant families all over the world. Many families when immigrate to a new country would face problems of integrating and assimilating into society. For Senor Matinez, who settled in the United States and raised a family there still carry with him his Mexican belief in dying for one's country and the pride of going to war. For him going to war and following government orders are what he believe would make him a proud American citizen. To have his son go to war and fight for his new country is an honor and almost an act of gratitude to the United States for giving him and his family and new life and home. However, Tito, Senor Matinez's son does not think and feel the same way that Senor Matinez feels. Tito, born, raised and instilled by the true American tradition opposes the war and find no cause in attacking a country for the oil field. Raised in a country where freedom of speech and having a sense of individuality is most valued Tito finds himself in a precarious situation between his father's demand that he should serve his country and his own conscience of fighting in a war of lost cause. Eventually Tito stands by his own self-conscience. It may seem like the conflict between Senor Matinez and Tito are universal conflicts between father and son with different points of views and ideas in which it is, nevertheless, the conflicts reaches out to a greater conflict, which is the conflict between two cultures and two generations.

Even though Senor Matinez and his son disagree upon whether Tito should go to war or not, but in the end the conflict was resolved. Both parties were divided in their points of view and the only way they could resolve their difference was through a mediator. Both Senor Matinez and Tito expressed their points of view about the conflict and both understood each other's position and accepted and respected each other's decision. Through mediation, talking, exchanging ideas and a little understand cross-cultural problems can be resolved.

The story "El Patron" shows that assimilation, for first generation immigrants are not as easy as the children of the first generation because the children have more exposure to the cultures and ways of the American life where as the parents are pretty much still attached to the old and tradition values of the country. As much as Senor Matinez believes he is an American (through his act of sending his only son to fight for ‘his' country) Senor Matinez cannot let go of his original culture and beliefs. Ironically enough through Senor Matinez's patriotism for America it can perhaps be analyzed that Senor Matinez is more American than his American-born son. For Tito, as a man born of an immigrant family he is surely the infinitive definition for being an American as he holds many of the American values dearly to him and was willing to fight his family and his country for what he believed in his heart was right. The story "El Patron" also shows the differences in the two conflicting views that both cultures have towards the value of education. Senor Matinez feels that education does not instill the values that he wishes into his son.

Order Custom "El Patron'" and the Immigrant experience paper

Overall, the immigrant experience for Senor Matinez, Tito, and Lola are both positive and negative. For Senor Matinez the immigrant experience for him is rather a negative experience because he has lost the ability to instill his Mexican culture and heritage into his children. Because of this inability to pass on his cultural heritage to his children it causes a gap between him and his children leading to misunderstanding and conflict as seen from the story "El Patron". It seems like Senor Matinez is the least out of the three characters (Tito and Lola) to adapt and assimilate into American society. Senor Matinez still hold much of his old habits and cultural values from Mexico as seen from his treatment to his daughter Lola, no involving her into any of the family problems and sending her to the kitchen while the men talk in the living room. Again the concept of equality amongst men and women is a relatively foreign concept for Senor Matinez. On the contrary Lola, Senor Matinez's American born daughter feels differently because Lola demands that her dad treat her as equal to that of the way Senor Matinez would treat her husband. When we look at Lola and Tito, both American born children of an immigrant family, has assimilated into American culture pretty well. Tito has learnt to voice what he believed is right and wrong and is willing to go against all odds.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a young graffiti artist in New York. He was born in Brooklyn on December , 160. Ever since he was a child, he showed an interest in art which his mother encouraged. He grew up to be one of the most famous artists of our times, but also one of the most troubled. He died at the young age of 7 from a heroin overdose. I believe factors other than that of the drug overdose led to Basquiat's death. Those factors are The stresses of being an artist in the city, hereditary depression, and the death of his good friend and fellow artist, Andy Warhol.

Jean-Michel's career as an artist started when "he left high school a year before graduation, and sold hand-painted postcards on the streets. He also started spraying cryptic aphorisms on subways and around Brooklyn with the signature SAMO" (Parker). "In June of 180, Jean-Michel's art was publicly exhibited for the first time in an art show sponsored by Colab" (Parker). After this, Jean-Michel's art career boomed. The movie Basquiat showed many of his gallery showings where he sold art for thousands of dollars. Jean-Michel faced much racism in the powerful white art world. In the movie, "His admirers said "This…is the real voice of the gutter!" At another point he is described as the "Pickaninny of the art world." He hears "There has never been a black painter who was considered important" (Ebert) Jean-Michel later signed on with his first full-time dealer. Annina Nosei cleared out her gallery basement for Jean-Michel to use as his studio. While Jean-Michel was painting, Nosei would bring down clients and disrupt him. She would also sell his unfinished works without his permission. This upset Jean-Michel and he ended up leaving Nosei. Afterwards he went through a number of other galleries and dealers, but he had problems with almost all of them (Brain-Juice).

Jean-Michel suffered from hereditary depression. There is a scene in the movie where he goes to visit his mother. She doesn't even respond to him. She just stares with a sad and blank look on her face. Even though Jean-Michel was surrounded by people, he still felt himself to be alone. Throughout the movie you rarely see Jean-Michel happy. He always has a distant look on his face, like he wants to escape reality. In multiple parts of the movie, Jean-Michel looks up into the sky and sees figures surfing in the ocean. He even mentions, in the last scene, of going to Hawaii (Basquiat). I feel that the need to escape reality was the ultimate reason for his drug abuse. The final straw was pulled when his friend, Andy Warhol, died.

Write my Essay on Basquiat and His Death for me Jean-Michel's and Andy's relationship was definitely an odd one. They first met when Jean-Michel strode up to Warhol's studio and tried to sell him some painted postcards (Basquiat). They later encountered each other at art shows where they developed a good friendship. "Apparently Basquiat was the first African American that Andy ever befriended (AXE). In Basquiat Andy and Jean-Michel were portrayed as good friends. "Warhol supplied the younger artist with introductions to wealthy clients as well as serving as a surrogate father figure" (AXE). When Jean-Michel found out about Andy's death, it was as if the whole world shattered around him. Jean-Michel is seen walking the streets in pajamas, lost to the world (Basquiat). He abused his drugs more but "attempted to kick his heroin addiction by leaving the temptations of New York for his ranch in Hawaii. He returned to New York… claiming to be drug-free. On August 1, Basquiat died as the result of a heroin overdose. He was 7.

Drug usage was the ultimate, but not the only factor leading the Jean-Michel Basquiat's death. He will forever be known as a landmark artist of the 0th Century. His life was a classic tragedy, but his art will live on forever.

The initial population of the island of Nfld came as a result of the fishery. Organized attempts to populate the island but a few scattered souls remained each year and eventually the island's population grew.

Migratory Fisherman

I leave England on the journey to Newfounland in early March, and in some years in the middle of April. This is due to the weather which must be just right for the often dangerous crossing of the Atlantic. We land on the northern or eastern areas of the island four weeks later, although some years it has taken us up to six weeks to make the crossing. The ship is crewed by other poor laborers like myself who have made the trip several times before, but also among the crew are young teenage boys on their first trip to the island. They will mainly stay ashore and cure the fish we catch.

Before we can go fishing, however, we must find a safe harbour close to the fishing grounds, where there is also sufficient forest from which we can get the material to build our flakes and stages, along with every other structure we need, such as the cookhouse. We must also make sure that there is enough flat land where we can cure our fish, if not we will have to clear some. This work can usually take 6 or 8 weeks to do before we can go fishing.

When we finally are ready to fish we are placed in smaller boats, maybe 16 to 0 feet in length, along with or other men. We begin fishing with our hand-lines at dawn and continue until our boats are full or just before the sun sets. We then land our catch and the shore crew, usually the same number as those aboard the boats split and clean the fish and lightly salt it, then pack it away until the morning when it has to be placed on the flakes to dry. We grab our supper and go to bed so that we can rest and repeat the same thing tomorrow. Only more months of this and we will be heading home.

This is due to the weather which must be just right for the often dangerous crossing of the Atlantic. We land on the northern or eastern areas of the island four weeks later, although some years it has taken us up to six weeks to make the crossing. Unlike the others aboard I am not a hired hand, but rather my own boss. I have paid for myself and my small crew's ( or other men) voyage across and already have my boat and supplies there, awaiting my arrival. I hope no damage has come to it or else I'll have to spend the first month repairing it. Quite often the Indians or those pesky settlers have destroyed my gear.

Once we get to the island there will be some preparation for us to do before we begin fishing. We must rebuild our flakes, and at times even our stages, as well as do repair on the shack which will be our home for the next five months. I will sell our catch to the trade ships that come up from the Mediterranean or from jolly old England.

We then land our catch and the shore crew, usually the same number as those aboard the boats split and clean the fish and lightly salt it, then pack it away until the morning when it has to be placed on the flakes to dry. Settler

I worried a few years ago when I moved my family to this rugged place. Back then I thought that I could make a decent living and return my family back to jolly old England before I died. Now I don't know if that is possible. I figured I would at least do better then when I use to come here and fish on those migratory boats. At least I own a fair sized piece of land, but it is awfully lonely here, especially during the long winter months, when there are only a few other families here.

I own my own boat and trade the fish I catch to the trading ships that come from England and the American colonies. But this fishing is hard work and the wife and family has got to be helping me at it all day long, they don't get much rest. In the winter we survives on the fish I manages to catch and the few vegetable we have left from our small garden. I go into the woods and cut all the firewood I need and I also cut some other logs in hopes that the migratory fishermen will trade me for them next spring. I also does a bit of hunting to supplement our diet of fish, which can lose its taste after you eat it all year round.

The migratory fishermen aren't too bad, since they trades me a great deal of goods that I can use each year, but they think they owns the land. So while they are gone back to England I am going to move my stage and flakes closer to the shoreline. There's sure to be a fuss about this, because it happens every year, between us few that stays here and them. I can't wait until I goes back home, but I guess now that this is only a dream and I'll never see my homeland again.

Parking Lot Controversy

Campus Issues are common at many colleges. At Monmouth University, one main concern is parking. Many people try to resolve the issues, but these problems still occur. Students know that there are not enough parking spaces on campus, and to get to their classes, takes longer to walk than to drive. One solution is that something should be done with the parking lot. The parking lot should be made bigger for those who live on campus or the commuter lot should be split in half. If the commuter lot was split in half, then half would be for the commuters and half would be for the residents.

Many people pay an enormous amount of money to attend Monmouth University. Students should be able to park closer to classes. It is not fair for students to walk in the freezing cold weather. Commuters only walk from the parking lot to their classroom. When residents walk to their classes, it takes about ten or fifteen minutes. They walk in the cold weather and then walk into a warm building. This results in the students getting sick. When there is rainy weather, many students do not go to their classes, because they do not want to walk in the rain. By making a bigger lot closer to classes, or splitting the commuter lot, students will attend many more classes. If the commuter lot was split, then there would have to be another lot for the rest of the commuters. Therefore, the residents have a chance to park closer to classes.

Another reason why a bigger lot or splitting the commuter lot should be put into effect is the commuter students obliviously do not have to drive very far to get to school. Why do they get to park closer? There are some complaints that people are parking near the dorms that should not be, but not nearly as much as students parking over near their classes. The commuters do not pay as much money as residents students do to attend school. It would be a lot easier if residents were able to drive to classes. If there were another lot, or the lot were bigger, then students would make it to class on time. Many students do not even bother to go to class if they are late. If the commuter lot was split in half, then half would be residents and half would be commuters. It would give a chance for many residents to drive to the other side of campus, which they do not have that opportunity for now. It is not fair when a resident student has class until 1000 p.m or a student is in the gym and has to walk back late at night in the freezing cold weather. It is not safe. It is too cold in the middle of winter. This winter has been an exceptionally cold winter. Building a bigger lot where resident students could park would be a great thing for many students.

As of now, many of the resident students try to park in the commuter lot closer to their classes. Although they are getting tickets, they continue to park there to get away from walking in the cold, rain, and snow. Building another bigger lot or splitting the lot in half, would help the Monmouth University Police. They patrol the lots and have to write an enormous amount of tickets because students are parking in the wrong place. It would be an easier job for them. If there were spots for the resident students, the amount of tickets that were written would be reduced.

Campus Issues are problems that colleges experience every year. A problem that occurs every year is with the parking lot. Many students feel that it is not fair to have to walk back and forth to classes in weather conditions. One proposal is to build another bigger parking lot or split the commuter lot in half. Doing such things would resolve the issue of parking on campus.
