James West Davidson and Mark Hamilton Lytles' "From Rosie to Lucy" is a piece written to show the feminine viewpoint regarding women's role in life after World War II. Thought I feel that equality is an important issue, I also feel that Betty Frieden and other feminists may have been a bit neurotic about pointing out blame.

During World World I while the men were away fighting for the United States, women were forced to take a stand in the working world. After the world, women more-or-less went back to their original habits and men resided over their previous jobs. Betty Frieden thought this backwards-step was horrifying and "thought there was something wrong with me because I didn't have an orgasm waxing the kitchen floor" (1). I feel that Frieden had every right to have strong feelings about the restraints she felt on her by the male population, but I don't feel that every women felt that specific way. "Surveys showed that Americans, whether male or female, continued to believe that child rearing was a woman's primary job" (1). Frieden would argue this point by saying that commercials and other forms of mass media forced women to feel this way, but I believe that many women "wanted" to stay home and raise children. Women had the opportunity to work and if they wanted to take fulfill that option, they could. If they didn't want to, they didn't have to. This is shown by the following quote "Some .5 million women did voluntarily return home after the war and another million were laid off by 146. At the same time, .75 million women entered the job market by 147, leaving a net loss of only half a million." (1).

I think all the feminists during the WWII era and beyond had women's equality at the top of their priority list, I just think they might have grouped "majorities" together and "forced" things to look more grim than they actually were. Mass media does have an influential part on our daily lives by persuading our personal opinions greatly. But altogether, women "did" work during the war and "did" work afterwards. I'm sorry if Betty Frieden took it all too personally, I thank her for getting "the message" out there to the public, I venture to say she took feminism one step too far.

This thrilling book had two main plot lines. They were separated by part one and part two. The first part was a mystery and it had a lot of suspense, and the second part was mainly based on a court trial.

In the first half Harper Lee tries to keep us in suspense. She first explained where it took place, and who the characters were. "Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks and the courthouse sagged in the square." (Lee 5) "Set during the depression, the story is recalled from the distance of maturity by Jean Louise ("Scout") Finch, whose widowed father, Atticus, was a civilized tolerant lawyer in a backward Alabama town and a brother Jem." (Lemay 1) Jem and Scout try many different things to get Boo Radley to come out of his house, because no one has ever seen him before. Dill, one of their friends, views Boo as a turtle. He says you have to stick a lighted match under a turtles belly and he will come out. In the same way they needed to find ways to get Boo to come out. "First of all," he said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view." (Lee 0)

Harper Lee tries to combine two themes of southern fiction. The recollection of child hood, which describes the children, and how they play their games and get into trouble. That is what child hood is about. "And they watch with dismay and pain as the adult world betrays them." (Lemay ) The other part she tries to combine with it is how civilized white southerners treat Negroes.

Custom writing service can write essays on west nile

The second part is more interesting because it talks more about the case trial and the racism that is going on at the time. Racism is when people judge other cultures. Like blacks, Mexicans, and other religions. They do not like the way they look. In this story most of the people are racist against the black man. Many people are racist and they do not even realize it. Harper Lee states in the story, "We're so rarely called upon to be Christians, but when we are, we've got men like Atticus to go for us" (Lee 15) We all should have an attitude like Atticus.

These two parts of the book, do not really fit together well because the one part is about child hood and the other is about adult hood. That is what makes it interesting to some people. It is not like all the other books. This book did not flow together. It had its own characteristics. This one has its own fashion.

In the second half of the novel Atticus decides to defend an African American by the name of Tom Robinson. Tom was accused of raping a young white girl. "I shall be brief, but I would like to use my remaining time with you to remind you that this case is not a difficult one, … To begin with, this case should never have come to trial. This case is as simple as black and white" (Lee 0) She is trying to tell us that the court case shouldn't be judged upon knowing that Tom is a black man. They should treat him just the same as every other man. The jury went out and made their decisions. "When they arrived I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury Guilty…guilty…guilty…guilty …" (Lee 11) So Tom Robinson was charged guilty. Tom Robinson may have died, but Atticus sure did not give up or fail in any other way. He had faith in Tom. The case was through and things had started to go back to normal, until the night of the school play, when Bob Ewell attacked Jem and Scout. "This was not good enough for Jem. "No sir, they oughta do away with juries. He wasn't guilty in the first place and they said he was." (Lee 0) Heck Tate was the sheriff who was called when this attack happened. "I'm not a very good man, sir, but I am sheriff of Maycomb County…There's a black boy dead for no reason, and the man responsible for it's dead. Let the dead bury the dead this time, Mr. Finch. Let the dead bury the dead." (Lee 75-76)

Part two shows true adolescence by all the characters. Atticus was a great example not only the children but to the whole town. " To my way of thinkin', Mr. Finch, taking the one man who's done you and this town a great service an' draggin' him with his shy ways into limelight- to me, that's a sin." (Lee 76)

Harper Lee makes this story very unique and interesting. There is not a dull moment in the book. It is a thriller. In the Critical View chosen, there was an agreement with the author, because the book was poorly combined together. Racism was a good thing to add to this book. Many people do not realize they are hurting other people when they do not involve them in other activities just because they are a different race. Racism has a powerful meaning.

"The two worlds remain solitary in spite of Miss Lee's grace of writing and honorable decency of intent." (Lemay ) As for myself, reading is not a hobby worth looking forward to, but this book was enjoyable to read. The suspense kept it going, and it was worth reading. Finding myself agreeing with this author about the book was spontaneous. Everything he said was the same thing my own words came up with. This was an excellent view point to agree with.

Poems can portray various different messages throughout their context depending on the viewpoint in which you look at the meaning from. In W. H. Auden's poem he depicts two clearly diverse attitudes, one is of the clocks and the other is of the lover in the poem, he makes this clear through his use of such techniques as diction and imagery.

On the one hand, W.H. Auden portrays the attitude of the clocks through his use of imagery and diction. A first example is shown in the sixth stanza, when Auden writes, "O let not Time deceive you,/You cannot conquer Time." By saying this Auden shows that the speaking of the clocks is a way of warning the lover that he does not have forever, and that Time, in essence, rules all. No matter what you do to try to conquer Time you will not live forever. Furthermore, Auden shows the attitude of the clocks towards the end of the poem using mainly imagery. For example, he tells the reader to plunge their hands in water, in order to see what they have missed in life. This is mainly to allow the reader to realize that things are not always what they seem, in this case, he is speaking of the realization which must be made that Time does not necessarily last forever and you must make the most of what you have for now. Finally, Auden makes sure that the reader perceives his message undoubtedly. In the last two lines of his poem he writes, "The clocks had ceased their chiming,/And the deep river ran on." Evidently he is saying that life will go on, the clocks stood as a warning to spend your life doing things which you like to do, things you enjoy, because you only have a limited amount of time here. However, the river which was brimming in the beginning of the poem is still running, therefore proving that life goes on, even though sometimes you may think it won't. Through the attitude of the clocks Auden clearly proves his point that Time is everything, it rules all and you must live your life to the fullest.

On the other hand, while W.H. Auden clearly portrays the attitude of the clocks he also shows the ignorant attitude of the lover, once again using mainly diction and imagery. Unlike the clocks, the lover does not realize that Time cannot be defeated and it rules all. Initially, in the beginning of the poem where the narrator first acknowledges the lover's song, he speaks of a brimming river. The word ‘brimming' is used to describe the river but it can also be tied to the vivid description of his adoration for his lover. Another example of Auden's use of imagery is when he further describes how much he loves her, eternally, and says, "I'll love you till the ocean/Is folded and hung up dry,/And the seven stars go squawking/Like geese about the sky." In the stanza the amount of imagery used is incredible, Auden also incorporates alliteration to even further the reader's awareness for the lover's love. The lover believes that he has forever and that his love will be eternal, not aware that Time is not able to be overcome. However, the clocks begin to "whirr and chime" attempting to teach the lover a lesson and to allow him to become a little bit less ignorant, especially when it comes to love and life. Finally, when the lovers leave the river, it is still running and the clocks have stopped chiming clearly signifying that they have learned the lesson and their overall outlook and attitude towards life have been affected for the ages.

Thus, it is unmistakably made evident that the attitude of the lover and that of the clocks as presented in the poem by W.H. Auden clearly contrast each other. However, in the end the attitude of the lover was affected immensely by the attitude of the clocks.

Geoffrey Chaucer was a narrative poet and one of the greatest English writers. The differences in society are important in understanding the actions and attitudes of Chaucer's pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales. The social structure of Europe in the 14th century was feudal. Society was organized in a hierarchical form, one's wealth and power determined the position one occupied. Each level of society had its rights and privileges, and each had its duties and obligations, as do the pilgrims Using the "General Prologue" as an example, Chaucer's skill as a teller of tales, his precision of characterization, comic tone, use of symbols, language, and metrical techniques all contribute to his unique style of writing.

The Canterbury Tales is a series of tales within a uniting framework, although it was never finished. In the "General Prologue," Chaucer uses the device of seven members of the feudal order, thirteen people associated with religious life, and fourteen townspeople telling one another stories while travelling on a pilgrimage. There is a significant difference between Chaucer's framework and other writers. The structure of visualizing the pilgrims telling one another stories is artificial. It is impossible for all thirty-four pilgrims to hear each other's stories while traveling along a narrow road.

A distinguishing feature of the "General Prologue" is its method of characterization. Each pilgrim is described in such great detail that we, as the reader, feel personally acquainted with the individual. The line, "And al was conscience and tendre

herte" (150), shows how the details are purposely used in creating a sense of intimate acquaintance with the character. The characterization's range from the Friar's sixty-two lines to the Cook's nine lines. "Not a word is wasted details of physical appearance, dress and equipment, social rank, and character evoke the whole man or woman by powerful suggestive strokes" (Wagenknecht 14).

Write your Chaucer research paper

Chaucer's idea of a pilgrimage as the occasion for the telling of a series of tales is a great device used in The Canterbury Tales. The use of the pilgrimage device allowed Chaucer's "General Prologue" to become a human comedy. The characters "contrast between what is and what men see - of themselves and of others - lies Chaucer's deepest vein of comedy" (Wagenknecht 5).

The "General Prologue" begins with details to describe the setting and serious nature of the pilgrim's journey. The season functions in a symbolic manner. Spring is a time of renewal for nature and man. The pilgrims express a desire for spiritual replenishment and rejuvenation in going on a pilgrimage to a holy place. The pilgrimage is seen as "an event in the calendar of nature, one aspect of the general springtime surge of human energy and longing" (Wagenknecht ).

The language that Chaucer wrote and spoke in his time is different from modern English. Scholars call the language of Chaucer's age, Middle English. A principal characteristic of Chaucer's style is its clarity. "Chaucer was, and remained until the appearance of Shakespeare, the most consummate master of language amongst English poets" (Kluge xxix). In terms of grammar, the ending es of nouns is pronounced with an s, not as in modern English dishes (dishez), with a z. There are also differences between Chaucer's pronouns and those used in modern English. The pronoun her(e) or hir(e) can mean either her or their. Chaucer's use of adjectives presents a dissimilarity between the absence of ending in the singular (yong) Squire and the presence of the final e in the plural (yonge) Squires. However, the final e appears in all situations in adjectives such as swete. The final e's are also to be pronounced. The past tense of weak and strong verbs used in Chaucer's English are still similarly used today. Most of Chaucer's words have survived into modern English and have not changed in meaning. However, some words have altered in meaning and must be reinterpreted.

Throughout his writings, Chaucer shows a consistency in meter, rhyme, and verse. Early in his career, Chaucer departed from the limited verse form and adopted the combination of rhyme and fixed stress patterns. He became one of the first poets to introduce the five-beat line. For the first time in English poetry, Chaucer used a five-beat, seven-line stanza, rhyming ababbcc, known as the rhyme royal, in three tales of The Canterbury Tales. Although, Chaucer mainly used a five-beat couplet, the heroic couplet, throughout the tale. Chaucer's work on the evolution of metre and the development of language remains very important. "English poetry owes its classical metre to him, and, moreover, both directly and indirectly, more than one very important strophic structure" (Kluge xxxii).

In conclusion, Chaucer's work altered the entire aspect of English poetry and produced a new attitude towards it. As a narrative poet, Chaucer achieves a lyrical effect and demonstrates familiarity with his ideas and audience. This effect allows him to display philosophical material in a comic and serious tone. Thus, Chaucer is a maker of English poetry in his telling of tales, his precision of characterization, comic tone, use of symbols, language, and metrical techniques

Have you ever taken a bite out of your Big Mac and think what is really in here? well I have ever since I was a young girl. I could not seem to grasp how it was normal to eat another animal. When I was younger, I did not know much about being a vegetarian; honestly, I did not even know it was an option. Until, one day at a family party I overheard my mother speaking to my cousin who mentioned that she only ate white meat (known as a white meat vegetarian). Very curious at my age, I asked her what prompted her to make this choice and decided that I wanted to make a change in my life that I felt would make me a better person. My choice was eliminate meat altogether.

Being a vegetarian has shaped and redefined my life in so many ways. One way that vegetarianism has shaped my life is how it has given me the opportunity to become a very strong willed person. When I made my decision to be a vegetarian, my family was not exactly supportive of the idea. My grandmother being in particular did not like the idea one bit, she thought I was being silly and it was not a healthy choice. One of her concerns was that I would lose all of my energy and strength and would not be able to play in the sports that I excel in, tennis. After two years of being a vegetarian even my Grandmother reluctantly has to admit, I have proved her wrong. This year I am the captain of the Tennis team, playing my strongest game yet and am very proud of this accomplishment. I recently had all my blood work done and all levels across the board are great. I will admit learning to eat a well balanced diet and eliminating all meat was a learning experience and I had to do some research with the support of my Mother to get the right balance of protein from other sources, but I did it.

Being a vegetarian has shaped my life, especially with my family. I feel much closer to them. I feel as if I am contributing something to them in which they would like to know more about and that I have earned their respect by sticking to this goal for two years and doing it successfully. Preparing for our nightly family meal takes a little bit of thought and is a longer process than I or my Mother would like but the results are great. We have settled into a routine where I usually cook my own dinner, bring something in from a restaurant or my mother will prepare a vegetarian dish for all of us. I have found every possible vegetarian restaurant at least within a twenty-mile radius from my house. The all time favorite is Falafel, which is a Middle Eastern Restaurant. I have contributed to the health of my family as through me being a vegetarian my mother has cut down on the meat she serves at dinner and two nights a week removes meat from the meal altogether. In fact, Spaghetti Squash has become an all favorite. It makes me proud to be able to contribute to the health and well-being of my family and teach them about a way of life I very much believe in. Through my experience of being a vegetarian, my self-esteem has become higher. I feel as if I have a better self-awareness on the hierarchy of the so-called food chain. I believe that if the idea of vegetarism was taught throughout the world that we could me a change and help feed starving countries.

Being a vegetarian shaped my life and defined me as a person in many ways. I am more aware of what I put in my mouth and how it affects the mechanical workings of my body. I am strong willed and not easily swayed by other opinions when people do not agree with my choices. But of most significance I am proud of my judgments and capability to live a live as a non meat eater!

Although HawthorneÕs Young Goodman Brown was written during the end of the PuritanÕs grasp on American culture, their beliefs are shown throughout the story. HawthorneÕs insights come not from his own beliefs but those his ancestors had towards obedience, religion and conventional morality. Young Goodman Brown gives insight to the cultural values of the early 1800s and the authorÕs own struggle with his faith. Such a term as religious freedom, for example, did not mean for Puritans the unrestricted choice among varieties of worship or non worship as we take for granted today. Rather it meant the opportunity to enforce in a whole community, unchallenged by the English Church or king, their particular forms of Puritan worship ( Porter, Terrie, Gordan 18).

The Puritans held many religious beliefs dealing with obedience, morality, and hierarchy but they truly focused on three blue laws (laws based on church ideas). The Absolute Sovereignty of God says that the Puritans believed that God is all - mighty and asserts His influence in every part of human life. Original Sin and Total Depravity says that Puritans believed man to be naturally evil and depraved. Each child was taught that man was born evil from the New England Primer, In AdamÕs fall/We sinned all. The last of these Puritan beliefs is Predestination and Unconditional Election which says that manÕs fate, through AdamÕs fall, is now predestined by God. Man canÕt achieve his salvation by doing good; he must instead wait, hoping that God will choose him for salvation from other flawed souls.

Puritan belief was centered around these three laws conforming the early American culture into their own. When Young Goodman Brown was written, Hawthorne chose to question those laws that had been instilled in his family for generations. He suggests to the readers of the that time that maybe they arenÕt born in sin and that what they do in life does matter. During the time it was written, around 186, America was going through major changes

as a culture. Minority groups of women and blacks were fighting for civil and legal rights, the

railroad had become an important tool for travel and Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe and Ralph Waldo Emerson were important writers of that time, who spoke for the new ways of transcendentalism.

America was also moving out of an instilled tradition of Puritan belief. Due to this change of values, Hawthorne seized an opportunity to wake up New England with Young Goodman Brown. Through this story Hawthorne is able to show readers the innocence of a man who after witnessing evil in the flesh is no longer able to even squeeze joy out of life. The author dared to write of a fate of a man that was not textbook. From beginning to end the reader witnesses that Goodman Brown is starting to lose whatever faith that he had to begin with. In the beginning Brown is asked by the devil why he was late and he replied, Faith kept me back awhile (Clayton 76). The underlining of this quote could easily say that not his wife Faith but instead his conscience and his own faith in God kept him. Later, after meeting with Goody Cloyse and the minister and Deacon Gookin, he screams into the forest for his faith and proclaims, My Faith is gone! There is no good on earth, and sin is but a name. Come, devil! for thee is this world given. (80) In the end Brown cries Faith! Faith! Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One! (8) Whether or not his Faith betrayed him or not, young Goodman Brown will never know. What now lies in his heart is opposite of every Puritan manÕs upbringing that through GodÕs forgiveness, man can be saved. Goodman Brown believes now that he is eternally damned to hell. His innocence was lost, and he was not able to save his own fate. HawthorneÕs view of life in this story focuses more on the effects of a personÕs decisions. W hat you do in life is important, you are judged by your actions.

Hawthorne used the changing times of America to express his own feelings towards Puritanism when writing Young Goodman Brown. The story dares to focus on topics that the

respectful, industrious scholars of 17th century Puritans would have never thought of.

Conditioned of the three blue laws of Puritanism, many Americans had the same mind set about religion as Hawthorne. He then chose to breakaway from this conditioning and showed a new way to get to God. Young Goodman Brown is a story about the never-ending battle of good and evil and one manÕs journey into the unknown. Before the story was written, many New England natives had not yet taken this journey due to the constricting values of Puritanism. With the changes America was going through, the break from Puritanism and this haunting tale these natives begun to question their fate and the fate of their fatherÕs. Young Goodman Brown will forever challenge the mind of anyone who calls themself a religious person and the worldÕs current battle of religion can only add to its power.
