The taming of the shrew is a plot derived from ‘the war of sexes', in which males and females seek dominance in marriage. In this play, marriage isn't the result of love but people are expected to take part in it and see how it ‘works out'. Gentlemen in this play are not about romance but are about how well they can suit their wives and keep them loyal. Marriage is like a game to the characters of this play, for example Hortensio says " He who runs fastest gets the ring.".

The play also reflects dominance in marriages. Baptista; father to Katherina and Bianca, wants both his daughters to be happily wed, but he is not letting Bianca wed until his oldest daughter Katherina is wed. This shows that the two girls did not have a choice to when they wanted to get married it was up to her father, this was all from the theme ‘a women was her fathers property until she wed, then she was property of her husband'.

The taming of Katherina is not because she is ‘ignorant' as a women but as the way she treats men, or how she should treat men in this case. Women are expected to do this as the male characters of this play are all bought up as in the way of their fathers, and their fathers are all important men for example Lucentio's father is Vincentio, who is an elderly authority figure.

Cheap Custom Essays on Examine the different ways in which Shakespeare presents issues connected with marriage and male and female relationships in the play, the taming of the shrew

In this period (Shakespearean) marriage was for wealth and social advancement, and not for love. The two main women Bianca and katherina, were seen and not heard, no matter how hard katherina rejected to this. The two girls were seen to be their fathers possession until they wed, than they were property of their husband.

A good case of what I meant by marriage was for social advancement is the story line of Petruchio and Katherina, the only reason why Petruchio wants anything to do with Katherina is because of a 'bet' with Lucentio, this shows that men did not show any romance about women but women were for show.

Age difference was also a quite blatant thing I noticed, it was that women were married in teenage years around about the age of sixteen and the men they married were as old as forty.

It is truism to say that change occurs all around us, in many diverse forms. It is a step further to say that these changes are inevitable, something which is a part of our lives and cannot be stopped.

The theme of reminiscence of past times is present in the story entitled Sky High by Hannah Robert. This anecdote retells a past experience of Hannah's from when her grandfather came to stay. In contrast with her current situation she underlies the physical and psychological changes that have taken place. The reader is drawn into the scene by descriptive imagery such as "a struggling sapling, surrounded by the patchy lawn like spectators." The use of alliteration gives a clearer picture of the landscape she is describing, and, combined with personification, the description of Hannah's backyard comes alive in our minds. At first, the washing line is said to have "silver skeletal arms", and then through the passage of time, it has physically changed. In the present it is "an older, more age warped washing line" with "sagging wires". Similarly, Hannah has also changed, overtime. As a young girl she would "swing upside down" on the washing line, yet now "it is unlikelythat the washing line could support" her. She remarks "There are too many things tying me to the ground". Hannah feels the weight of the ages upon her shoulders, she has changed, and the child-like innocence she once possessed is stunted and stagnant. Hannah accepts this physical change in her environment, which results in her understanding how she has personally changed through her reactions of this transformation.

In the park written by Gwen Harwood, has explored the changing of self due to lifes journey. The beginning of the poem portrays the mother wearing clothes that are out of date, this emphasises how the mother has little time for personal care and happiness now that she has bickering children to look after. The overall flatness in the poem emphasises the monotony in the mothers life, and highlights the boredom of plodding through life. But, when she unexpectedly meets a past lover, the dialogue starts How nice et cetera…But for the Grace of God. This religious reference is evidence that the man is thankful that he has not been part of this change, which has so obviously caused dramatic consequences in the womens life. At the end of the poem, the women says, they have eaten me alive whilst she is comforting the young child and is evidently comforted in return. This is a strange use of irony as the mother is tied down by her responsibilities, but seems to have been content with change. This contentment was only questioned by her reaction towards her past lover.

Erin Brockovich, directed by Steven Soderbergh, has depicted change through the main character, Erin, like the women in In the park, her physical appearance also suggests that she is of low socio economic status. Erin is also a struggling, single mother due to two failed marriages. Her life changes when her neighbour George enters her life asking for her number. She responds by saying How bout this for a number, six, thats the age of my daughter, eight, is the age of my son, two, is the number of times Ive been divorced and sixteen is the number of dollars I have in my bank account. Here Brockovich is trying to resist change in her life but later, when she accepts this change she learns that this change, in fact, reshaped her existence in a positive manner. The changes she underwent years previous to now aided her in her ability to connect with local citizens. This then lead to her being respected for the first time in her life. The respect she gained gave her an emotional strength which not only helped her reinvent her own life but it helped her change the lives of others by triumphing over insurmountable odds.

It is the experiences and how one reacts to that experience that shapes their change.

This cant happen to me!!! It just cant!! I screamed. I ran out of my English class, towards the guidance office, but there they were waiting for me. I quickly did a 180, and dashed out the side door. I ran as fast as I could towards the little woods behind Greenwood High School. I wasnt sure where I was going or when I was going to stop, I just needed some time to think. I found a big apple tree and slumped down on one of its big roots. It was here that I stayed until late at night. Millions of thoughts were going through my head all at once; how could this have happened? She was fine yesterday! I saw her last night! Why did this happen? She was only 16. Tears filled my eyes as I thought of how Stephanie looked last night. She is so beautiful, I thought, I just dont understand.

RING! The bell for my last class just rang. Great guys, were late again, I said to Kara. Yea, Mrs. Oaks is going to kill us. We slammed our lockers shut and sprinted to room 07. Maybe Steph will be in there, I thought to myself. She hadnt come to school today and I had tried calling her eight times during lunch, but got no answer. Kara must have been thinking the same thing, Hey, do you think Steph will be there? I just shrugged. It was really odd for her not to come to school without telling one of us first. As soon as Kara and me entered the room we expected to get the death look from Mrs. Oaks. The look that says if I wasnt so old and weak, I would kill you with my bear hands for being late, but we didnt get it. Instead, she looked at me with a sorrowful look and quietly shut the door. Then she went to the front of the room with a little piece of paper in her hands, sat on her bench, and didnt speak a word. The whole class became silent. Even though we sometimes think Mrs. Oaks is senile, this was a little bizarre for her. What the hell is goin on? Some kid asked from the back of the room. We all started snickering, but were interrupted when she stood up and said the words that will ring in my mind for the rest of my life; I have some tragic news. Then she read from the piece of paper, One of our fellow students was in a car wreck this morning. Stephanie Daprile was pronounced dead at 74 a.m. That was all I heard. I suddenly felt numb and dead to the world. People were talking all around me but I felt as if I was a million miles away. That is when I ran. I ran towards the guidance office, and I could see Mr. Gardner waiting for me with open arms. No! I didnt want to talk to him; I didnt want to talk to anyone.

Steph was like an angel. She even looked like one. If she looked at someone a certain way, she could get anything she wanted. Guys were always drooling over her brown curly hair or her big brown puppy dog eyes. I always asked her, why not take advantage of that? She would always reply with, We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from it. I never really understood that, but the more I sat underneath that tree, the more things Steph said became clear. I leaned back against the tree, closed my eyes and remembered my childhood.

All through middle school, my parents would have horrible fights. Sometimes they were so violent I was even terrified of staying there. In 8th grade one night, I woke up to a crashing glass sound. I opened my door to find my dad throwing glass jars at my mom. Both were screaming at each other and telling them they hated each other. Me, thinking I would be able to stop it, step

Michael Bean

George Bush Senior was elected president in 18. He was elected saying many things, such as having no new taxes and increasing military spending. His views were hardly his own, but seemeed to be borrowed from the prior president, Ronald Reagan. He seemed only to be an extension of the well regarded Ronald Reagan, and seemed like a good choice for the Reagan-lovers.

Like his siblings and family alike, he was given a fast track to political success and seemed to be taking full advantage of it. Despite the hardy appearance and well-projected image, Bush would later fold some of his promises under pressure.

Along with many people who questioned his perfect moderate appearance, Bush began to stray towards a conservative Texan and soon his policies changed. He was often regarded as a president who would work strictly for his own benefit.

Order College Papers on George Bush Sr., how will he be remembered? Bush' media advisors worked hard to project a tougher, firmer image, which was a success, but it was later shown that Bush would be a self-defining character throughout his presidency.

Once elected as president, and inaugurated on the 0th of Janurary, 18, Bush dropped the firm image for a while, and took people on tours on his first day as president. He left a looser, more informal atmosphere throughout the Government and White House.

At the time of his election, both Houses were controlled by democrats, so Bush had no choice to choose his fights moderately, and had a great deal of trouble making any sort of rash decisions.

One of his most well-known blunders, the world realized that reading Bush' lips meant nothing, as Bush decided that raising taxes was an absolute necessity. This not only ruined his public image and made everyone question his every decision, but it lost his strong support with the few republicans left in the government at the time.

Soon after the president drew a blank on how to solve the deficit, he and Congress agreed on a budget package that would marginally raise taxes for the general public, and reduce high-paying exemptions. Folding again, Bush really hurt his image on keeping his word and also lost much of his support with the republicans.

Continuting the economic turmoil, unemployment rates rose sharply around 11. Attempting to remedy the situation, Bush decided he would raise benefits for the unemployed, and would make concessions with Japan, Austrialia and South Korea for exports. Although he did reach small agreements with Japan, the endeavor was considered yet another failure.

Soon after Bush' 1 State of the Union address, Bush made yet another questionable decision vetoing a bill that would raise taxes for the wealthy to lower the deficit. It was considered one of his tougher decisions regarding tax raises.

Despite all Bush' problems with following his word and keeping the economy running back at home, he was heralded for his handling of foreign affairs. He was praised for his handling of Nicaragua, unseating the leaders that had long bothered both Bush and Reagan.

Bush also did well in Panama, using force when necessary, as it was to remove Gen. Manuel Noriega from power. He was able to capture and charge the general with several charges.

One of Bush' best moves while in office, he made several agreements with Mikhail Gorbachev to reduce weapons and sign peace treaties. Soon after he also kept the agreements coming when signing with Yeltsin and Russia.

While handling his most serious issue as president, Bush' popularity rose to incredible highs. He managed to defend the defenseless Kuwait, and rid the country of all Iraqi soldiers with one of the quickest wars in world history, with battle lasting but 100 hours. The only downfall to the situation was the method in which Bush ended the war, with cease-fire before Saddam Hussein was removed from office in Iraq. Although this error seemed minute at the time, it has had it's share of consequences, leading to the recent Iraqi war.

Although Bush seemed to have an overall successful presidency, his image in history can be summed up in the way the 1 election went

Despite international successes, economic disaster and lack of trust were overwhelming to the public. The inconsistency of Bush' presidency would leave him in the cold, exactly as the election went, with an initial prediction of re-election, but would end with bitter defeat

All throughout his presidency, Bush seemed to be a real livewire, unpredictable and energized, but it would not be enough to remove the images cemented into the citizen's minds as a misleading, poor money handling man.

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Beowulf, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Beowulf paper at affordable prices! In the epic poem Beowulf it can be seen as a social commentary dealing with man's struggle to carve civilization out of a hostile, alien environment. In my own eyes Hrothgar and his crew might not have been as civilized if Grendel wasn't around, there would be no one to bring them together.

Beowulf is a great hero, separated by his acts of strength and courage. He was willing to risk his life for the life of the his community. At the beginning of when Beowulf first came in the Heorot Hall he wasn't accepted. People didn't think that they needed this outsider to come and resolve their problems. Until Hrothgar showed his people that he accepted and trusted Beowulf. To show his people he gave the hero a variety of gifts and treasures. So know that Hrothgar approved everyone started to like Beowulf and became grateful for the duties he was willing to do.

People were fearing Beowulf because they had no knowledge of this hero. Not knowing anything at all bout him increased the challenge of keeping the community civilized as time went on. Everyone was seeing Beowulf as an intruder. One person that wasn't helping with accepting Beowulf was Unferth. He was trying to bring down Beowulf to his own level. But in the end Beowulf showed Unferth who was the better

person.

Grendel was a monster that created problems and he was also was an entertainer for the community. He was characterized by being uncivilized and known as the outcast. The mead hall would not even be in existence if Grendel was not around. . This was a place for people to come together and to battle Grendel. This was Grendel's attack place, but every time that he attacked it seemed like the people would just come together.

There is something strange about the monster. He would only come to the Heorot Hall to attack if the victim was either sleeping or drunk. He would only attack if the other was unaware and not expecting anything. He waited and watched every move and when they were unable to fight he would attack. While waiting for Grendel the people would drink, tell stories all night just awaiting the arrival of the monster. These people were unaware that Grendel was there watching and waiting until those people are that their weakest point. He waited until the person could not fight back, that is why he only attacked those who were unaware because he was afraid of getting beat. By doing this he made the community be more afraid of this monster attacking them.

Due to all the commotion in the community they kept themselves secluded from what was going on around them. It made the people live with some kind of fear, that's exactly how Grendel wanted it to be. It kept the people from doing their usual activities.

Because of the fear they were unable to live their life to the point that they wanted. Everything changed when Grendel entered the poem. No one was the same person.

Yes, people have fears but Grendel was the main fear of the community. These people were not doing much to try and over come this fear, that is why I don't understand why all these people were upset when Beowulf came around to try and help. He was willing to do what needed to be done and no one else was.

In conclusion, Beowulf was the one the kept the community strong and civilized. He shows how a man is struggling and how he carved civilization out of a hostile, alien environment. Everyone had to come and work as one to defeat the thing that caused everyone to be scared. The community as a whole could defeat Grendel not just Beowulf.

Order your Lord of the Flies Speech paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Good morning Ms Barr and fellow students, I will be speaking about the ways in which the novel Lord Of The Flies by William Golding illustrates that human experience, attitudes and values are shaped by their environment.

These thoughts are conveyed through the boys who are abandoned on an island after their plane crashes while evacuating from England during WWI. Golding tries to shows us that when humans are left in the natural environment, their attitudes and values will change, as they do not have the rules and regulations of society inflicting on their actions.

Golding uses his characters very effectively. The two sides of man's personality are represented by Jack and Piggy. Jack represents the evil side of man. He is the leading advocate of anarchy on the island and is the leader of the savage group that hunts the pigs. Jack is the kind of person which Golding believed everyone would eventually become if left alone to set one's own standards and live the way one naturally wanted.

Piggy however represents the law and order of the adult world. He is the part of man's personality which attempts to act according to an absolute set of standards. Its no coincidence that Piggy's nickname is such; the overwhelming emotion Jack and his hunters have to kill the pig is an indirect and clever author metaphor to suggest the boys are also killing a part of Piggy. In fact, while Jack and his gang continue to kill more pigs, the logic and reason which Piggy symbolizes progressively diminishes with the pigs.

Write my Essay on Lord of the Flies Speech cheap

This links with Robert Gray's poem ‘The Meatworks'. The way in which Jack and his group of savages develop a disregard to the pigs and slaughter them is similar to that of the workers at the meatworks. Gray's use of unpleasant adjectives such as "bellowing" and "stench" gives us the impression that he doesn't want to be there but is obligated to, because "the only work was at this Works". This is the same for the boys on the island, as they do not wish to be on the island but have no choice, and the only reason they kill the pigs is because it is the only way they can survive. Also Gray uses personification, describing the machine he works with as having a "chomping, bloody mouth", to help create the distasteful image of the meatworks and to try and make us dislike the meatworks as he does. His experiences in this environment change his attitudes towards the meatworks, as well as his values of the pigs, as not just pieces of meat, but living creatures that experience the same type of emotions as humans.

Another technique used by Golding is symbolism. There are several important symbols throughout the novel. The Beast, the Lord of the Flies, is the evil part of man. The boys believe it is a real object that frightens the boys, but is really just something internal; it is in the mind and soul of the boys.

The conch symbolizes the law and order of the old adult world which Piggy tries so desperately to protect. The conch represents all the authority which the boys are so used to obeying. When Jack destroys the conch, anarchy quickly ensues because any hope of strong, central leadership has been abandoned. The island society collapses into chaos.

The other important symbol is the parachute man. This symbolizes the end of adult supervision of the boys on the island. While the parachute man is flapping back and forth on the island, conjuring up a powerful image of its prolonged death, the Beast, or Lord of the Flies, is prospering under its new control over Jack and most of the other boys on the island. So while the law and order of the adult world is waning, childish chaos is growing exponentially.

As the boys adjust to their new environment their attitudes towards the rules and regulations of their old environment change. They disregard them and become uncivilized and savage. Their becoming savages begins with their first successful hunt. This is the beginning of the anarchy that is to occur.

The boys divide into two groups, Jack and his hunters, and Ralph with his followers. Ralph is still concerned with getting off the island and remaining civilized, whereas Jack is mainly concerned with hunting and just having fun. Jack and his followers values have changed. At first they desperately wanted to get off the island, and back to society, but they are now quite happy with staying on the island and having fun. Their values and attitudes have been shaped by their new environment that is without rules and adults that were apart of their old environment.

In conclusion, I believe that Golding conveys how human experience, attitudes and values are shaped by their environment very effectively in his novel Lord Of The Flies.
