Mrs Tilschers Class-A summary

Subject matter

• The poet is remembering a year in primary school when she was in the class of a teacher called Mrs Tilscher.

• She remembers a particular lesson (Geography) and a typical breaktime.

Help with essay on Mrs Tilschers Class by Carol Ann Duffey-A summary

• She preferred school to home because of the magic of enthralling books, sugar paper and coloured shapes which helped her to forget her fears of Brady and Hindley (the Moors Murderers who killed a number of children in the 160s).

• She describes details of other lessons and playtimes, especially one day when a rough boy told her the facts of life.

• At the end of the school year, when asked about how you were born, Mrs Tilscher didnt let on, but there is a sense of growing excitement with the coming thunderstorm

Language

Re-read the poem and examine the language carefully. What effects is the poet hoping to produce?

• She includes details to set the scene and help us imagine the classroom - chalky Pyramids (on the blackboard) / A window opened with a long pole.

• She uses similes and metaphors. Find some examples in the poem and explain why they are effective. Here are some ideas

• The classroom glowed like a sweet shop. This emphasises how special the classroom was to a child, since a sweet shop is a place full of treats and surprises for children.

• Brady and Hindley faded, like...a mistake. She uses a typical classroom image of rubbing out a mistake in your work to show how Mrs Tilscher helped the children erase their fears.

• Inky tadpoles. This description is very visual and helps us see the blots and dashes as the children learnt to use ink pens.

• The poet appeals to our senses to help us experience the classroom more fully

• There are vivid descriptions, as if the poets memory is like a photograph, so we can see the childrens fingers travelling up the Blue Nile.

• There are many sounds mentioned, so we can hear the classroom as well as see it. Mrs Tilscher chanted. The laugh of a bell.A xylophones nonsense

• We can also smell the classroom air - The scent of a pencil...- and almost taste the electricity of the end of term and feeluntidy, hot, fractious

Sound

The poet seems to be confiding in us and talks to us directly, so the poem sounds a bit like the patterns of everyday speech. The length of sentences is very varied. Look at some examples of one or two word statements Ethiopia. Khartoum. Coloured shapes. Compare them to longer sentences Three frogs / hopped in the playground... Can you explain this contrast?

Form

The first two stanzas are very innocent, the laugh of a bell swung by a running child, while the third and fourth are about gaining experience - the inky tadpoles changed...the heavy, sexy sky. Why do you think that the first two are made up of eight lines each and the third and fourth are made up of seven lines each? Do the shorter stanzas add slight tension?

Each stanza moves us through the school year, so the poem ends at the end of the summer term.

Ideas and attitudes

Now that you have read the poem carefully, consider what the poet wanted us to appreciate about her being in Mrs Tilschers class. Here are some ideas

• She obviously felt very safe and secure and happy in Mrs Tilschers class.

• She emphasises how Mrs Tilscher was ordered and organised.

• She values the things that Mrs Tilscher taught her (about the Blue Nile and commas and exclamation marks).

• She also values the things that she learnt during that year but were not specifically taught - she grew up a lot in that year.

Tone

What do you think are the poets feelings for her teacher and that year of her school life?

• She speaks very affectionately of Mrs Tilscher, emphasising all the personal touches that made her special - shed left a good gold star by your name.

• She also loved the special atmosphere in Mrs Tilschers classroom.

• She is grateful for all that she learnt and discovered.

• She generates excitement as she remembers the start of her adolescence.

There are many types of plastics. For example

Name Used for

Polythene Plastic bags and bottles, dustbins, ecling filmf

Cheap University Papers on Uses of plastics

Polystyrene Plastic cups, fats-food cartons, packaging foam

Nylon Rope, bristle for brushes, tights, carpet

Melamine eUnbreakablef dishes and mugs, ashtrays

Urea-formaldehyde Electric plugs and switches

Phenol-formaldehyde Door handles, saucepan handles

Plastics have these properties

1) They are all carbon compounds.

) Their molecules are long chains of atoms, made by joining lots of small molecules together. So they are called polymers. Poly means many. They are produced by a reaction called polymerization.

) Because they are molecular compounds, they do not conduct electricity. They are electrical and thermal insulators.

4) They are unreactive. Most are not affected by water, or oxygen, or other chemicals, which makes them very useful. But it also means they are difficult to dispose of. Unlike wood or paper, they do not rot away. (But biodegradable plastics will rot away.)

5) Some catch fire easily. When they burn, they may give out harmful gases. For example, PVC gives out choking fumes of hydrogen chloride when it burns.

6) Plastics contain mainly carbon and hydrogen atoms, which are light. So plastics are also light. But they are also strong because their molecules are so long. The longer the molecules, the larger the force of attraction between them.

(As you will see on the next page, the molecules in some plastics are cross-linked, which makes them even stronger.)

The Relationship of Othello and Desdemona

The relationship between Othello and Desdemona is one typical to the times. It is a relationship of power. Othello has complete and total control over Desdemona, which is why Othello becomes so enraged when he learns of Desdemona's infidelity. Othello is used to being in power and when an action was taken on behalf of Desdemona without his consultation and in his worst interest he lashed out.

As a General, Othello had command over many men, horses and townsfolk. He was the one who barked the orders and created the plans. Nothing was done without his approval and if it were, then the most extreme consequences were carried out.

Desdemona eloped with Othello because in her eyes he was the most perfect man. He was wise and noble. He was not only the physical but mental essence of a man. Othello saw Desdemona as the woman with esteemed feminine grace. They fell in love with each other based on the differences that

they perceive in one another. To Othello a woman is someone who succumbs to his every beck and call and does not resist power or his authority. Desdemona with her naïve nature is only willing to comply. Iago who cannot stand to see these two people so well in tune with each other devises a plan to ruin that relationship.

Being a General when Othello was told of Desdemona's infidelity by Iago it was treason. He treated Desdemona as one of his troops. She was his wife, he was in charge of her, how dare she betray and commit treason against him and all that he stand for. More so how dare she show such disregard for his stature and position in society?

This is why Othello could not and for that matter would not show Desdemona any sympathy or forgiveness. He had to maintain his General status and demeanor. If he allowed just one person to betray him, then mutiny would occur.

The relationship between Othello and Desdemona is quite reflective of the emphasis put on women to be their man's property from birth until death. "O heaven! How got she out? O treason of the blood" (Brabantio, I.i.185) A daughter was the fathers property until marriage. "Sweet soul, take heed, Take heed of perjury; thou art on thy

deathbed." (Othello V.ii.60) From her birth and upbringing and later to her marriage and death, her father and husband controlled Desdemona. This woman was controlled by men her entire life, and suffered the consequence of not being able to be believed.

Each of the two men controlling her life accused her of treason. She disobeyed them and gave up her respect. To Othello the General and her father the Senator, treason was the worst possible crime committable. Her father gave up all communication and rights to his daughter, and Othello killed her.

The relationships in Desdemona's life were all about control and power. Both her father and Othello dominated her every movement and those that they didn't control were acts of treason.

"My mother had a maid called Barbary,

She was in love; and he she loved proved mad

And did forsake her. She had a song of "Willow."

An old thing ‘twas; but it expressed her fortune,

And she died singing it. That song tonight

Will not go from my mind. I have much to do

But to go hang my head all at one side

And sing it like poor Barbary."

Adams 4

(Desdemona, IV.iii.-4)

Desdemona tells a similar story of a maid whose love deserted her and the sad song she used to sing. At this time her naïvet nature shows when she asks if there are women who betray their husbands. Desdemona remains innocent with her only desire to comply with the men in her life.

Othello and his power are what does not save Desdemona. As he kills her he weeps, and his pain and love become more apparent as he learns the truth. His last words before his death show that true love and passion remained under the General exterior. " I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this Killing myself, to die upon a kiss." (Othello, V.ii.41)

I honestly feel that Othello loved Desdemona with all his heart but bound by the laws and emotions of a General and the society which he was involved in, forced him to kill her as consequence for her actions. Their relationship was one of love and passion second to power and control.

A Life Changing Event

One year ago this week was the worst event that has ever taken place in my life. I wrecked the car I had put five years of hard work into. This event changed my life for the better in a rough way. The crash caused the car to flip seven times at 85 mph and in the process it threw me from the car. After the crash I have realized my place in this world. I couldn't live my life based on materialistic things.

On October 1, 00, I had just gotten my 16 Chevelle back from the transmission shop after building the new motor for the car. I had saved for over a year to install the new drive-train in it. The sole purpose of the new motor was race only. Early on in the afternoon I fueled up and washed it at the car wash. It was there when I met up with a friend of mine who wanted to ride in the car with the new motor. So I took him to his house to show his parents my cool ride. There I showed off my most prized possession off to my friends parents. Then I proceeded to take him back to his car. It was then when I was showing out for him and an older lady pulled out as I sped down the narrow road. I lost control and the car rolled over seven times before flinging me and him both out of the vehicle.

Due to the severity of my injuries, I had to be hauled in the back of a pick up truck to the emergency room. It took 150 staples to close the open wound on my head. Luckily my friend sustained no injuries. The wreck was painful but what hurt more was the fact the my friend didn't come see me in the hospital. He and I haven't spoken since the accident. On the other hand, numerous amounts of other close friends went to the hospital that night and waited until the could come see me after I was in stable condition.

I had to deal with numerous amounts of personal dilemmas in my life after that day. The car was everything that I had lived for, for so long. I worked on it for five years of my life. Suddenly, I lost it and a good friend too. My dad despised me for wrecking my car and wouldn't help me purchase another. I was enrolled at BSCC, and yet I couldn't finish my semester up. My life went from almost completely perfect to almost completely ruined.

I had lost everything precious to me yet I had everything to gain. I was at a stage in life where I had to make the decision to quit playing and start working. I had a future to think about instead of a car. The wreck almost killed me, but it gave me a new life. It was time to give up the materialistic aspect of my life and concentrate on getting a fulfilling education.

"Capitalism and Gay Identity," John D'Emilio

Gays and lesbians have become increasingly accepted by society. There are many more gay communities, facilities, and organizations than ever before and the number is rising. When did gay activity evolve into a lifestyle? John D'Emilio pondered this very question when he formulated his essay, "Capitalism and Gay Identity." D'Emilio argues that the development of capitalism, and its free labor system, has allowed gays and lesbians to create a "homosexual identity" (), opposing the belief that this identity has always existed for them. D'Emilio makes his points clear and convincing, although he omits many other factors that led to this revolution. The reader can then argue that although capitalism is one of the factors delineating a gay identity, others are overlooked in D'Emilio's attempt to make a clear correlation between capitalism and gay identity.

D'Emilio makes a clear distinction between homosexual behavior and gay identity. He admits that there have always been homosexuals, but the identity he speaks of comes from a society that allows them to exist. He points out that in colonial years, society lacked the terms to even acknowledge homosexuals. They referred to this activity as "sodomy among men" () and "lewdness among women" (). In certain states, laws forced unmarried adults to live in "family units" () and they were unable to make a way of life through their attractions.

Moreover, D'Emilio goes on to say that capitalism was the cause of gay identity through the breakdown of both the family's monetary independence and its interdependence on each other. Before capitalism, families were able to support themselves by their own means. As D'Emilio puts it "…husbands, wives, and children worked together to produce the goods they consumed"(8). They could rely on themselves to be self-sufficient so long as they had a family. In this way, sex was a means of procreating.

Custom Essays on Capitalism and Gay Identity

With technological advances and free labor, individuals were forced out of their current lifestyles, and into the work force. People were therefore more able to make same sex relationships with people in the workplace, encouraging gay activity to progress into an everyday life, rather than an unspoken activity. Family units were no longer necessary for survival, and people had the option of being single for the first time. Slowly but surely, the role of sex in people's lives began to change. Relationships turned away from the need to procreate and "became a means of establishing intimacy, promoting happiness, and experiencing pleasure" (). Although it had always been a pleasurable experience, the main concern was having children. This was no longer the case. People could have sex for only the enjoyment they obtained. In this way, people were encouraged to find mates who enjoyed the same things as them. D'Emilio reasons that this supported those who were gay to express it, and gave them an outlet to form a life in society. It gradually became more acceptable to have a mate of the same sex.

However, D'Emilio's insinuation that capitalism was the only cause of the breakdown of family life, and his presumption that this breakdown was the sole reason for homosexual existence in society is inaccurate. He makes many claims that seem absurd to the reader. For example, he claims that "college educated white women…could survive more easily without intimate relationships with men" (1). He gives no recognition to any other factors that may have been involved. Just because these women may be more able to support themselves, they become lesbians? Why does D'Emilio single out white women? In another example, D'Emilio claims World War II "freed men and women from the setting where heterosexuality was normally imposed" (1). How can a war account for all gays and lesbians coming out? This seems to be a flimsy argument at best.

As one can easily see, capitalism did influence the societal changes that account for today's gay identity, but it was not the only factor in this transformation. Progression from all aspects of life is the true motivator of social change. As D'Emilio says, gay identity is "a product of history"(7), but no one segment can fully explain its formation or its solidity. Gays and lesbians can now coexist with society, and find their role in it, based on this newfound identity.

Response Paper #5

Write my Essay on Frankenstein for me While at the university in Ingolstadt Victor Frankenstein became consumed with the desire of discovering the secret of life. During Victors quest for and the eventual discovery of the secret of life he undergoes many physical and psychological changes.

After becoming intrigued with the idea of creating life, Victor began searching for the secret to the re-animation of lifeless body parts. At first Victors research was fluctuating and uncertain (5). As Victor continued his quest he became so eager that the stars often disappeared in the light of the morning (5), while he was searching for his answer. While engaged in his research Victor stumbles upon the secret of creating life.

After Victor discovers the secret, he begins the process of creating a life by gathering limbs and body parts. After realizing the complexity of working with small body parts Victor resolves to make the creature stand eight feet tall and proportionally wide. At this point Victor began to feel god-like and wanted the creature that he created to bless me as its creator and source ().

Victor began his search for the necessary body parts by searching dissecting rooms and butcher houses. During this time, Victor began to experience moments of guilt but would suppress them with the eagerness of seeing the results of his work. While Victor arduously dedicated himself to his task he began to isolate himself from his family, friends and all other aspects of his life. Victor became so enamored with his goal that he lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit (). Physically, Victor became pale and emaciated due to his isolation ().

Later, after learning that the monster was responsible for the murder of his brother and sees Justine executed for the crime Victor becomes even more withdrawn and guilt ridden. This pattern of his waning physical health in relation to the monster is a result of the secret guilt that he endured. By killing his brother and causing him to become isolated, the monster is able to make Victor experience the isolation that he has endured since his creation.

Frankenstein takes a different view of the scientific progress of the Enlightenment. While the Enlightenment thinkers of the time were excited and optimistic about what was being discovered, Shelley forces them to take a look at the negative aspects of the unchecked pursuit of knowledge. Although Victor was successful in creating a life that creation was eventually responsible for the deaths of two of the people that were the most important to him.

This idea of the danger of wanton pursuit of knowledge is again demonstrated later in the book after Victor meets Robert Walton. Waltons goal is to surpass previous human accomplishment and reach the North Pole. Walton eventually considers Victors story and gives up on his goal of reaching the North Pole.

Experiences and Emotions in The Things They Carried Three Works Cited Tim OBriens The Things They Carried is not a novel about the Vietnam War. "It is a story about the soldiers and their experiences and emotions that are brought about from the war" (King 18). OBrien makes several statements about war through these dynamic characters. He shows the violent nature of soldiers under the pressures of war, he makes an effective antiwar statement, and he comments on the reversal of a social deviation into the norm. By skillfully employing the stylistic technique of specific, conscious detail selection and utilizing connotative diction, OBrien thoroughly and convincingly makes each point. The Heroes of The Things They Carried Eight Works Cited The word hero is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someones life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim OBriens novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraw...
