In A Raisin in the Sun most of the main characters have a dream that they each try to work towards. Walter's dream was to open a liquor store with the insurance money that his mother got from her husband's death. Beneatha's dream was to become a doctor, and she was secretly hoping for some of the money to help pay her way through. Mamma wanted to use this money to buy a house for the family. Each of these dreams revolved around the insurance check that was a total of ten thousand dollars. However, out of these three different dreams, only one became a reality.

Beneatha was the "intellectual" of the family. She considered herself to be above the rest of her family and was always seeking her heritage "Well, do me a favor and don't ask him a whole lot of ignorant questions about Africans. I mean, do they wear clothes and all that" (57). Beneatha was a major nonconformist and always preached against assimilation. However, she became so concerned to being a nonconformist that she conformed her life around being against anything that was not of Africa or her heritage "Enough of this assimilationist junk!" (76). Beneatha's dream was to become a doctor and then return back to Africa and practice her medicine there. Beneatha was being hopeful towards the fact that Mamma would give her some of the check to help pay for her medical school. Unfortunately, this aid was lost to Walter in his attempt at his dream of being rich. While it is not known for sure if Beneatha becomes a doctor, the reader or audience is aware that it will be difficult.

Walter was the most aggressive character in the play. All he could think about was getting that money so that he could fulfill his dream of becoming a rich black man. Walter's scheme was to go in with two other guys to start a liquor store so that he could begin to make a decent living. Walter began to stress out over this dream and was always yelling at his wife and badgering his mom for the money. He felt that no one understood him, and, while this was true, his dream turned into a sham "You just don't understand, Mamma, and you just don't understand" (74). Willy took Walter's and Bobo's money and ran off with it. This crushed Walter's dream and severely hampered Beneatha's dream.

Cheap Custom Essays on The Theme of Dreams in A Raisin in the Sun Mamma's dream was the only one that ever became a reality in the span of the story. Mamma had always wanted a house of her own and a small garden so that she could plant things such as flowers and maybe some vegetables "Well, I always wanted me a garden like I used to see sometimes at the back of the houses down home" (5). When the check arrived she went out and bought a home for the family so they could move out of the "rat-trap" that they were in. This infuriated Walter who was hoping for the check so that he could enter into his "business" proposition with Willy and Bobo. However, Mr. Linder came to their apartment and tried to persuade them to sell their newly acquired home. Walter refused his offer, not once, but twice. Mr. Linder was the community chairman and what the community of Clyborne Park felt was that they do not want Negroes living in their neighborhood. At the end of the play the family was heading towards their new home. How this venture turned out is left up in the air. Trouble is hinted at when Linder says "I sure hope you people know what you're getting into" (14).

This story can be considered a cliffhanger because one dream is shattered, and the other two have a very good chance of failure. Walter was crushed at being taken by Willy. Beneatha has zero financial backing for medical school. Mamma's dream of a home is still under the possibility of being destroyed under the wrath of their hateful neighbors. The reader or audience can only hope for the best for this unfortunate family of big dreams.

Order your The Salem Witch Trials paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Why the hell is everyone still so obsessed with the Salem witch trials? Give it a rest already. They began in the late 18th century, and now we are in the 1st, if I am not mistaken. These people keep on bitching about how restrictive Puritan society was and how they persecuted everyone left and right.

Actually, their strict moral codes are highly exaggerated. You cant really blame them. I mean, here they are on a new continent, trying to survive. They tried to be strict to create some sort of social order, and there was no room for anyones bullshit at the time.

So then these two idiot girls decided to make up a bunch of stories about witches and stuff. Everyone believed them and decided to put a bunch of women that no one liked on trial. And thats how the whole Salem thing begins. I bet those two girls werent even expecting the whole village to believe their bullshit, but I guess they were dumb enough to go along with it. Well, someone always has to pay the price of stupidity.

I keep hearing this bitching about how hundreds of innocent women were persecuted and this and that. Ok, so they spent some time in jail. But only 0 were actually killed, ok? 0. Not hundreds. 0. And dont bother arguing over this because we both know that youre not a source as legitimate as my American History textbook.

So quit whining about these unfair persecutions already. Its getting old. Shit like this happens in history all the time, there was nothing special about the Salem case. It doesnt need scores of books, it doesnt deserve all the fucking 5th grade research projects done on it. We need to stop believing the lie that just because a lot of people were persecuted, they all died. I wish people would actually know what they are talking about before launching into their whole bitch-fest campaign.

Marriage Today

Marriage is less valued today than ever before.

Marriage and the way we view it today, differs greatly from the past. We no longer have to be married to be a family. Our views and opinions on marriage and its meaning have changed considerably. Marriage isn't necessarily less valued, it's just viewed differently.

The fact that the divorce rate has doubled in the last twenty years could lead us to believe that marriage isn't important to us anymore. Instead of persevering and working at married life, people are more frequently choosing to end their relationships. However, these divorced couples seem to be merely opting out of poor quality relationships to look for something better. In the past divorce was frowned upon, we were expected to carry on regardless of whether we were happy or not. Until 14, there was no financial help available for divorce cases. Making the process easier and cheaper has given people the opportunity to leave ‘empty shell' marriages behind. For example in 11, 75% of women and 80% of men divorced before the age of 5 were remarried within 10 years. These figures show that we haven't dismissed the idea of marriage. Repeated remarriage doesn't mean we take marriage lightly, just that society has changed and we're not expected to put up with being unhappy. People are demanding a better quality of marriage, it might take two or three attempts to get it right.

Custom Essays on marriage today

With the majority of one-parent families being created through divorce, we can't use lone parents as an example of marriage being less valued. Lone parent families are often only temporarily in this situation and like divorcees go on to remarry.

On the surface, the significant decline in marriage can appear to suggest its unimportance. This can simply reflect an increase in cohabitation. Attitudes have changed, it's quite acceptable to have a sexual relationship and children outside wedlock. Living with a partner can be as strong and binding as marriage. Many people choose to cohabit and have a family. They're married in every sense of the word, only without the certificate. If anything it reinforces the idea that marriage is very important. Ensuring we have chosen the right person to be our partner before committing ourselves. Many cohabiting couples go on to get married later. Again, we have more choices nowadays, we're not expected to rush into things we're not sure of. The cost of a wedding ceremony must also be taken into consideration. For the average family, finding thousands of pounds for something they're living quite happily without isn't always easy.

Less than half of today's weddings are a traditional religious ceremony. A civil ceremony is a popular option. This sort of wedding can be held anywhere and involve almost anything. Some will view this as trivialising marriage, rewriting vows and choosing bizarre locations for the ceremony. However the couples involved must be taking things pretty seriously to go to such lengths. After all, it's their day and they're personalising things because it is so special to them. With church membership and attendance down we see an increasing number of couples doing things their own way. This is down to attitudes and beliefs changing and with it the idea of what marriage is about.

Conventional roles within the family are changing. Some women no longer want to be a mother and housewife first. Their expectations of marriage are different from the past. Careers for both sexes can be priority to create a stable environment for relationships and children later on. This confirms the value of marriage. The average age at marriage has increased.

The difference between the past and the present is the choices we have. If we're unhappily married we have the option to change things. If we choose to cohabit there's no strain on us to marry if we're not ready. When we do marry we can say how and where. Modern life demands a certain quality in relationships. We want to get more out of a relationship outside the home. We want to be friends with our partner and spend free time together. Marriage isn't less valued today, the way we live our lives has changed and so have our reasons for choosing married life.

Please note that this sample paper on marriage today is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on marriage today, we are here to assist you. In the Crucible, the main character is John Proctor. John Proctor is a tragic hero who is a great man but has one single flaw, pride, which will lead to his destruction.

John Proctor is considered the to be a great man in Salem. He owns a good piece of land and farms it very well. He is a devoted husband and loving father of three. There are groups and factions that are present in Salem where John has stayed clear from them. This shows that he does not get involved with all the problems of the town. He also despises hypocrites although he becomes one at the end of his life.

In the previous winter, Elizabeth Proctor had gotten very ill. John Proctor had committed lechery with Abigail Williams during this time. Abigail told John that there was no witchcraft going on. When the trial had started, Elizabeth was begging John to go to the court and explain to the court what Abigail had told him. John didn't because he didn't want his relationship with Abigail to become public. When John tried to tell the court about what had happened, it was too late. Than John Proctor was accused of witchcraft. By the end of the trial, Judge Danforth was willing to pardon John Proctor. When all he had to do was sign a piece of paper, his pride took the better of his judgment. He knew that if he signed that paper and gave it to the court, his name and reputation would have been scarred forever. He was worried about his children. Yet, he should have saved his life instead of dying for his pride.

When John Proctor did not submit his written signature of confession, he was sent to hang. If he had given his confession, he would have been able to live. Judge Danforth did not want John Proctor to die because he had thought that he was not a witch. He understood that Abigail was lying. The reason he could not come out with it was because his reputation would have been ruined. All that he had to do was give that confession to Danforth and he would have been given the gift of life.

In "A Rose for Miss Emily", William Faulkner uses a setting from which he is both familiar and knowledgeable. For he grow-up in the south, some would say that he is a die-hard southern. "A Rose for Miss Emily" is set in a town that resembles the town in which he grow-up in as child and men in her life.

Perhaps the passing of Miss Emily's father is the best thing that could happen to Miss Emily. After all she is 0 and not married, in the era in which the story is set most young ladies married well before they are 0 years old. While her father was alive he turned away any suitor that would call on Miss Emily. Now she has the chance to meet and marry someone this would be a difficult task at her age. But she is like a loaded pistol waiting to go off it not handle with gentle caring hands.

The character Homer Barron, could have been chosen as a suitor for many reasons one that comes to minds is he is the exact opposite of Miss Emily. He is "a Yankee, big, ready man with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face" (page 1). Homer was a northern and day laborer, not one that a young lady of the South would even, consider especially Miss Emily Grierson. Miss Emily is described as a slender figure; one would envision a petite and quite young lady a true Southern bell.

Belinda McCasland page

Emily's relationship with Homer affects the way the town sees her. "As soon as the old people said ‘‘'Poor Emily"' the whispers began. ‘"Do you suppose it's really so?" (Page 1) risking your family name for the sake of love and companionship. Miss Emily's character makes a change she begins to appear very confident and boastful, wanting the respect of those around her. Many of the ladies and elders think that she is a disgrace to the town and not a very good role model for the young people. It is not appropriate for a young lady and a man to just parade around town as she and Homer are seen doing most Sunday afternoons.

As with her relationship with her father her relationship with Homer was all doomed. Miss Emily apparently feels that she has no choice but kill Homer. When she goes to the drug store to get the arsenic, she shows no concerns for other s will think. She buys the arsenic, and the rumors are flying all around the small town. ‘"She will kill herself''(page ), and some actually thought it would be the best thing, after all she is a disgrace to herself and her family name at this point. But then she goes out and buys a toilet set and two suits for a man, could it be they are getting married?

As a result of the failure of her relationship with Homer for the next forty years very few people could say that they had seen Miss Emily on the streets this small town. And no one had seen Homer Barron, but it is believed that he went

Belinda McCasland Page

to where he came from back east. "And so she died. Fell ill in the house filled with dust and shadows, with only a doddering Negro man to wait on her". (Page ) In the part of the story one would become sad and weep over the death of Miss Emily. Although she was a strange lady and we believe that committee murder earlier in the story. Imagine an old lady alone all her life and no one to care for her but a servant.

Miss Emily only wants what most young ladies her age want out of life a husband and family. Not grow old alone and die alone. Her father shattered that dream before he passes, not allowing suitors to call on Miss Emily. When Homer Barron took an interest or pity on Miss Emily it was a dream come true. Someone to love her or at least in her mind she thought someone to love her, but she could let him go; he is the only one who ever showed her any kind of attention.

As discovered in the end Miss Emily is not alone that she had done the unthinkable all for the sake of love. She did murder Homer Barron only to have his body in a bed that she she sleeps. She did not go through life alone nor did she die alone, for she had Homer Barron by her side.

Our story begins with a tall and very shapely woman if you get my drift. Anyway this tall shapely woman was trying her best to book a business meeting. She was sitting there watching the flickering of the computer screen while she haggard over the phone. She groaned as she saw the screen flicker and die the same happened with the lights and the remote cottage was plunged into darkness.

"What a time for a power cut" she muttered

"Now I will have to drive to London suppose you don't appreciate something until you have lost it" she added after some thought

She took some time to gather up her equipment and briefcase.

Due to the fact that she was in a very remote area she had to drive through several deserted roads but tonight the moon was out and the roads were clear.

Her business meeting was uneventful, however the trip home would not be.

After the meeting she started off home in her new car. For some unknown reason she had problems getting home, she just could not find any roads she knew and the moon which she could have sworn was full when she set out was now know where to be seen.

No matter how hard she tried she could not find any roads she knew. She usually took low keyed roads unlike the bumpy and poorly maintained roads like these. The hedges at the sides had the same gnarled dead tree that looked like a dead withering old man every 10 metres.

As she went over a deep pot hole her knee hit the radio and turned it on.

A serious voice floated around the car it said

"a maniac is on the lose and is armed with two small sharp axes, he is tall and dark with a beard he is wearing black trousers and a black jumper"

she jabbed at the radio in her egerness to turn it off, this really disturbed her.

So she decided to take a rest in a approaching garage.

As soon as she got there a strange deformed park attendant lumbered towards her car.

As she go out the attendant muttered that he would refuel the car while she had a bite to eat.

The words were a suggestion but she felt she could not disobey them.

While in the caf she could not take her eyes off the attendant, in half an hour he came back in and said that all was ready

Just as she was walking towards her car she heard the deformed man shout at her, then he was running after her at that point she ran to the car paused to unlock it but found it strangely unlocked

Without thinking she dived in and reved up the engine .

Just as she got out of the garage forecourt she heard him shout "there's someone in your car"

She looked in the rear view mirror and saw two gleaming eyes, the last thing she saw was two gleaming axes closing in on their target
