To begin with, the title, ‘Education for Leisure,' implies that the poem is going to be based around the idea of maybe extra curricular activities. However this is contradicted by the picture of a knife beside the poem which suggests that there will be a more sinister direction to the poem. This is because knives often represent murder.


In the opening Stanza the use of short sentences by Duffy makes the poem seem more menacing and it also contributes to the reader feeling as though the are directly experiencing the thoughts of the narrator as they are going through his/her mind, ‘Today Im going to kill something. Anything.' Duffy then uses pathetic fallacy in order to express the emotions of the reader, ‘It is an ordinary day, a sort of grey with boredom stirring in the streets.' I think she does this in order to create an atmosphere for the reader to enter as they are drawn into the mind of the narrator.


Duffy places the reader directly into the mind of this potential killer, in the second stanza, as ‘I squash a fly against the window' as ‘We did at school.' The effect of this is that the reader begins to create a personal connection to the narrator and their sinister thoughts become our own. This is successful because by the end of the poem the reader is pulled out of the narrators mind and bought back to reality with a twist leaving he reader wondering how they could have been in the same frame of mind as the narrator. Also in the second stanza the narrator begins to show what he thinks of himself, ‘I breathe out talent‘. This is a metaphor for the narrators intelligence which relates back to the title of the poem, ‘Education for Leisure', this tells the reader that the poem is going to be about the intelligence of the narrator. A type of intelligence that maybe cannot be taught but is invented within a persons mind. Lastly in the second stanza the narrator articulates his interpretation of murder as being ‘in another language' and therefore makes the act of murder something a lot less sinister than it should be.

Also the use of assonance, ‘I could be anything at all', gives the tone of the poem a more harsh edge. The effect of this is to illustrate the mood and tone of the narrators voice by creating harsh ‘a' sounds. In the third stanza it seems as though the reader uses the act of killing in order to express how much of a ‘genius' that the is, ‘The cat avoids me. The cat knows I am a genius, and has hidden itself.' It is almost as though writer is trying to show that the narrator feels that in order to be a ‘genius' a person has to be inferior to other living things so that they can feel the wrath of his intelligence. And by using them almost as a sacrifice to his ego he can see the greater good of his act, ‘I pour the goldfish down the bog. I pull the chain. I see that it is good.' The effect of this is that the reader is wondrous as to how a min can work in such an obscure manner and is almost forced to read on in order to further explore the narrator mind. It is very obvious that by the end of stanza four that the narrator believes his intelligence is being ignored, ‘I walk two miles into town for signing on. They don't appreciate my autograph.'


The narrator also attempts to tell people however ‘He cuts me off.' The effect of this is that the reader begins to almost feel sympathetic towards the narrator. However from the point of view of the killer it seems as though his train of thought is not one that feels sorry for himself but now he feels that he has to prove his ‘genius' to people I order to gain some sort of recognition. This is shown because as soon as he is rejected by the radio he gets ‘our bread-knife' and goes out. This suggests that he reader is going to experience yet another living organism moving into ‘another language.' ‘The pavements glitter suddenly.' This sentence is a pivotal moment in the poem as it is the moment when the reader is thrown out of the mind of the narrator and is placed into the position of the victim of the narrator. The effect of this is that it is almost as though the reader has explored the mind of the person who is about to kill them and has virtually thought their thought with them.


Another purpose of the poem ‘Educating for Leisure' is to show the reader a different type of education that has not, and cannot be taught. The readers are being educated by a different type of ‘genius' who believes that a living thing can only experience his ‘genius' by being killed and so in the last stanza he is educating us, the victim. The effect of this is that the reader put into a situation where their thoughts take on a different perspective of the events than they usually would.


In conclusion I believe that Duffy uses language throughout the poem in order to keep the readers attention. The effect of this is that the reader is drawn further into the mind of the psychotic narrator and is almost forced to become part of his thoughts. "The film ‘What's eating Gilbert Grape' is about change, discuss."


Lasse Hallstrom's film ‘What's eating Gilbert Grape' is primarily about change, both within the Grape family and the whole town of Endora. In this film, in which nothing actually seems to happen and looks as thought it ends where it began, we see some clear changes within the characters. Some of them go through a long, hard journey to fight for their lives and encounter a change. The director implies that Becky is used as a catalyst, both for Gilbert and Arnie.


At the beginning of the film we see that Gilbert is ashamed of his family. When some kids try to sneak a look at Gilbert's fat momma, he gives them a boost so they can see. He also refers to his mum as a "whale", secretly re-enforces the floor because her obesity has caused it to nearly collapse and has to deal with the embarrassment of Arnie climbing the water tower. Gilbert feels trapped in Endora. He feels like he has no escape from this small town where everything he has ever known is. At the start of the film when Gilbert is narrating, he tells of his older brother who "got away" and you can almost sense jealousy in his tone of voice. Betty Carver quotes, "I knew you'd always be here" when she tries to explain why she wanted to be with Gilbert and not her husband. Arnie often says how they're "not going anywhere" which ultimately drives Gilbert to his wits end.

We see a clear difference in the way Gilbert handles this situation with Arnie, who refuses to get into the bath. Normally Gilbert is very passive but this time he shows pure anger. It is important to notice that both Gilbert and Arnie seek out Becky after this incident. They see her as comfort and warmth. Gilbert then returns home and makes peace with Amy, Ellen and Arnie. He then introduces Becky to Momma, assuring her that he is not ashamed of her.


When Momma decides to return to her bed upstairs, the whole Grape family get a shock. The conversation between Gilbert and Momma is one of reconciliation. Momma refers to Gilbert as her "knight in shimmering armour" and immediately they are at peace with each other. The burning of the old house represents a new life for the Grape family. Although Momma is no longer with them, it seems as though the family have re-united with one another Arnie helps move the furniture out of the house and Ellen seems to soften a bit too.


Arnie heavily relies on Gilbert at the beginning of the film. He needs Gilbert to bath him, dress him and get him into bed. A clear change in Arnie would be the way he looks at death. He dealt with the death of his father and the grasshopper very differently to the death of his mother (he over-reacted to the death of the grasshopper). He dealt with his mother's death a little bit quieter and more peaceful, almost to the extent that he wasn't totally aware of what was going on at first.


Arnie also became a lot more independent at the end of the film. Becky influenced this. Arnie isn't seen as a burden to Gilbert anymore in the furniture scene. Arnie helps move the furniture instead of causing havoc (like when he runs around the house and destroys his birthday cake) and getting in everyone's way. He also chooses to go and see Becky when Gilbert lashes out at him. This shows he is capable of making his own decisions of what to do in a situation like that, instead of just sitting in the bathroom feeling sorry for himself.


Maturity was another change seen in Arnie. He becomes more self-dependant and starts to understand the difference between right and wrong. In the party scene Arnie wears more mature clothes (shirt and tie) compared to, what seemed, quite childish clothes throughout the earlier parts in the film. When Arnie "makes up" with Gilbert he hits him because Gilbert hit Arnie when he lashed out. This shows that Arnie isn't as dependent on Gilbert anymore and can stand up for himself.


A change is also seen in Momma. When Gilbert introduces the viewers to his family and home, we see Momma just sitting on the couch not really aware of what it going on. Everything in the house must come to her; she does not go to it. Although, when Arnie is arrested for climbing the water tower she demands that she goes to the jail to bail him out. This comes as a shock to the Grape family but they agree. The reaction of the public at the sight of Momma was quite a shock to her. It made her realise that she has become something quite "entertaining" to people. When Momma walks up the stairs to what can be portrayed as her "death bed" you can almost imagine that she is giving her last ounces of energy into the steps up the stairs. Instead of not bothering to do anything she tries to show her family that she is strong and can do it, but she is also aware of the consequences that follow.


Endora also goes through some changes with the introduction of "Burger Barn." Endora is a town where not a lot seems to happen, much like the people that live there. There aren't many things to do, apart from perhaps have an ice cream or visit the grocery store where Gilbert works. Burger Barn shows a new lease of life for Endora, which is first seen as the "ENDora of the line."


So in this film that doesn't seem to resolve much but actually does, we can clearly see as viewers that many of the main characters go through quite drastic changes in the way they look and feel about life, even though they don't all survive at the end. Therefore it is also clear to see the Lasse Holstrom's film ‘What's eating Gilbert Grape' is primarily about change, both within the Grape family and the whole town of Endora.

Today, many people are pondering over the choice whether or not to change or put some restrictions on parts of the Constitution due to some outstanding circumstances. One of those parts of the of the Constitution is the First Amendment, where it states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redess of grievances" (www.dictionary.com). I personally feel that everybody should be able to say and express how one feels as long as it doesn't endanger others in any way, and I think both the authors, Paul McMasters and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., would agree with me. These two authors wrote articles defending the First Amendment, "Free Speech Verse Civil Discourse," written by McMasters (17), and "Let Them Talk" written by Gates(18).

It is time to abandon the Quest for the Quick fix. It is time to step into the circle of common ground and halt the dangerous dance at the fringes, hurling invective and watching the common ground disintegrate. It is time to devote our energy to tearing down barriers instead of erecting them. It is time to declare an end to the speech code debate and move on to the larger question of eliminating bias and bigotry in all of society" (McMasters 175). McMasters basically wanted to be shown that the First Amendment does not take sides, all sides can march under its banner, all sides must heed its mandate for tolerance, understanding, and search for common ground. He ends his passage with this quote, "In it, there is hope, it may be the only hope" (McMasters 176).


Henry Louis Gates Jr. is an African American Literary scholar at Harvard Universary. Among his published books are Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex, Hate Speech, Civil Rights, Civil Liberties, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man, and The Norton Anthology of African American Literature. A lot of the things he says are reminiscent of Paul McMasters and Susan Gellman. He first touches on the fact that now the black intellectuals are no longer the political imperative to protect free speech (Gates 18). Gates says that the term "hate speech" is an ideology in spansule form, that it is the term-of-art of a movement (Gates 18). Just like McMasters, Gates says that speech codes may be more narrow and responsibly tailored, also carefully drafted by tailors (Gates 18).


Both Mari J. Matsuda and Charles R. Lawrence III do not agree with McMasters and Gates. They both belive that there should be a sencorship and limatations of freedom of speech. Mari J. Matsuda is a law professor at Georgetown University and frequently contributes to law journals. She strongly advocates regulating speech on college campuses. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman's poetry contains the same themes of Emerson but writes in a more concrete way opposed to abstract theories. Dickinson writes mainly of the self-reliant, private individual. Many of Dickinson's poems such as, "I Died for Beauty" and "Because I Could Not Stop for Death," deal with immortality. She views death as private thing that everyone goes through alone, isolating everyone. In contrast, Whitman portrays a more democratic side of the universal self. However he does realize the importance of not conforming to everyone when saying, "I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard"(6). Whitman speaks through is individual genius even if what he says is not agreed upon. Emerson's Self Reliance influenced both poets to speak their universal truths through their poetry.


Frederick Douglass' autobiography was not knowingly written with the influence of Emerson but is living proof of the philosophy of self-reliance. Douglass lived a much different life from Emerson, being born into slavery and witnessing humanity being stripped away from fellow slaves. Slaves would be whipped, beaten, and sometimes even shot. After witnessing his own aunt beaten as a young boy, Douglass comes to the realization, more similar Whitman, that everyone shares a universal human nature. This is more democratic compared to Emerson's more individualistic idea, believing all men are equal. Douglass determined to dedicate his life to the emancipation of all slaves does also compare with Emerson later on in his life. By befriending other boys in his neighborhood, Douglass learns to read and write. He finds this as a necessity to speak universal truths and express his own genius and be credible to others. Douglass compares with Emerson through his actions but differs in the life that he lived.


"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles"(). These last two lines from "Self Reliance" essay represent Emerson's individualistic concepts. Emerson values the equal individual that is in touch with their universal genius. Thoreau promotes this individuality and non-conformity through civil disobedience. Setting


There are many settings that create a certain mood and atmosphere. One of which can be found in The Twenty-Six Malignant Gates under Rose Hsu's account. Rose was describing her relationship with Ted. How their relationship started and how it was coming to a close. There was a sense of tension, frustration and confusion in that segment of the book. It reveals the truth in the saying that "love is blind". From the beginning, Rose felt that this man, Ted, swept her off her feet and carried her into paradise. Ted had always been the dominant of the two. He was always making the decisions on everything. Rose just stood by and agreed with whatever he thought was best. After Ted's one fatal mistake, he started to change. He wanted Rose to make the decisions for him. As one would think, this sudden change would be like a culture shock to her. It's difficult for one be accustomed to certain styles and certain rules then one day is forced to change them.


This part of the book is significant because it can relate to many people. Teenagers can relate to this kind of situation. For most of their childhood, students have been in the same environment with the same friends. Once high school hits, their lives turn away from their normal way of life. It's a culture shock to them. They're used to being in their own closed environment when suddenly they have learn a new way of life and adjust/adapt to their new surroundings. There are many characters that I could choose to analyze. One of them is June Woo. June was the daughter of Suyuan Woo. In the novel she is confronted with her mother's death. Before her mother's death, June never thought much about her mother. She never got the chance to know what was inside her mother's heart. She never got the chance to know her hopes and dreams. It was not until after her mother's death when she realized whom her mother really was. Her mother would spend hours trying to find a certain talent that would make her a prodigy. Even though one crab was better than the other, she chose the worse one. Her mother later said, " Only you pick that crab. Nobody else take it. I already know this. Everybody else want best quality. You thinking different." (p.4)


Another character I would like to analyze is Ying-Ying St. Clair. She has been through a long and tiresome life. She has a strong belief in Chinese superstition. She was born the year of the tiger and so she inherited its characteristics. A tiger has two colors, orange-gold and black. The orange represents Ying-Ying's headstrong and independent side. She used this part of herself before her first marriage. The black represents how she was after her first marriage, reserved and secretive. Her first marriage collapsed before her. She married a crude man whom she learned to love. Before their child was even born, her husband left her for an opera singer. She has undergone many tragedies that have left her with hurtful scars. It is these scars that she will finally open to her family. Ying-Ying said that, "when my daughter looks at me, she sees a small old lady. That is because she sees only with her outside eyes. She has no chuming, no inside knowing of things. If she had chuming, she would see a tiger lady. And she would have careful fear." (p.8)


Theme


One major theme of the novel is how difficult it is for immigrants to pass on their heritage and culture to their American-born children. This novel has many themes that teach the readers a lesson. In this novel, the mothers have endured many hardships for the sake of their children. Their hopes and dreams have been given to their children, though they don't realize it. The mothers in this book struggle to keep their family heritage alive so that their children would have something to be proud of and pass on to their children. However, their children seem to have little interest in learning about their heritage. They would rather be more "American" than be more "Chinese." As the novel progresses, the children learn about what hardships their mothers had to confront and it is until then that they learn to accept their culture.

This quote reveals a lot from Waverly Jong. It not only reveals her expertise on chess but it also reveals her character. Through this quote the reader can sense that Waverly is a character of power. She likes to be in control of every situation. The reader later finds out that Waverly becomes a successful tax accountant. Her character seems to be strong-willed and selfish. While growing up, her mother has struck her down numerous times with words. As a "ricochet" to it, she strikes other people down with words to make herself feel better.


"And on that day, I showed Second Wife the fake pearl necklace she had given me and crushed it under my foot. And on that day, Second Wife's hair began to turn white. And on that day, I learned how to shout."(p. 7)


An-Mei Hsu is the mother of Rose. She has always shown great strength of character. This quote took place at An-Mei's mother's funeral. Her mother had killed herself by eating too much opium. Others thought that she wanted to stage her death like Second Wife did, but An-Mei knew that that wasn't the reason. She believed that her mother purposely killed herself to give An-Mei strength. After her mother's death, she asserts her identity and is able to raise her voice against being used by others. She is one of the few characters that understood their place in life. This quote is one of many that show An-Mei's strength and courage.


"Of course you can be prodigy, too," my mother told me when I was nine. "You can be best at anything. What does Auntie Lindo know? Her daughter, she is only best tricky." (p.141)


This quote reveals the rivalry between two best friends. Lindo and Suyuan are constantly using their daughters to compete against each other. It's as if they were long-time competitors in a boxing match. Except now their older and using their daughters to fight for them. Lindo is the type of person who thinks highly of herself. She likes to stay in control and is a dominant character in this novel. Suyuan is the type of person who doesn't want to give up. She is very ambitious and learns that even if her daughter may not be a prodigy she has a good heart.
