Somalia a country of Africa is a great place of suffering. Famine, war, and crime are just some coming things you can find in Somalia. This paper will focus on the time period of 11-15. This is when Somalia decided to get into a civil war and make this an international issue. This will also contain why this might have been a mistake or an action the United States did to make this a mistake.

After years as Italian and British colonies, Somalia gained its independents in 160. A man named Said Barre controlled the country as a dictator. Another man who you will here have more named Aideed spent the late 160's and early 170's in prison for trying to take out Barre. Siad Barre then freed Aideed and appointed him ambassador to India, Sri Lanka, also Singapore. In doing this Siad Barre thought to himself since he gave this position to Aideed that he wouldn't try to take him out again and appreciate this position. Close to the 10's, the dictatorship of Barre had fallen apart. Aideed who was waiting for this for a long time took Barre place and became leader of the United Somalia Congress, this was a rebellious group. There was something also unknown by the people of Somalia. A president was chosen who goes by the name of Ali Mahadi. This man was a republican who was not recognized by a lot of the population of the country. As the Civil war is looking up in June 11, Aideed was elected as Chairman of the United Somalia Congress but as anyone would he refuses to step down from his presidency. In October of 11, Ali Mahdi created a government containing eight ministers, for this the Italian government supported this group financially. While all this was going on many military clans were attempting to take control. At the time of March and June 1, six groups from the north and central Somalia got with Aideed, learning and taking the tradition and political system of Somalia. In a violent civil war, Aideed clan was coming up. While all of this was going on U.N. opened an office in Mogadishu a couple of months after Aideed over come other forces. Yet U.N forces saw it was too late to make peace between the two clans so instead they tried to control the famine problem in Somalia. U.N. finally declared Somalia an anarchy, and then took military action in disarming the Somalian population and also try to change there government. The U.N. cause more violence then peace in Somalia because the Somalia's fought to keep there old traditions of government and rules. During the time of June 5, 1, U.N troops tried to close

Aideed Radio Station that was commercially messages about the U.N., putting them down and making them look bad. Somalia's attacking U.N. in retaliation caused the U.S. to fight an expensive bloody war that lasted five months. On October of 1, the United States ended there conflict with Somalia because 18 American soldiers died and some of there bodies were dragged through Somalia streets. Officially on March of 14 is when western soldiers withdrew from Somalia, fighting came to a complete Holt. Many lives were lost on our side and lots of money were spent, was it worth it? Did this war change or make a difference in Somalia?

No, I pretty much feel this war was a mistake something that should've been handled differently. We went into a war underestimating the enemy; we didn't really think it through. We didn't make an impact on the Somalia people. The reason why I say this is because.

Buy custom The Civil War in Somalia. Was it a mistake? term paper

Fighting in the capital of Somalia steered up again in October of 15. Supporters of the military anarchy clan in Somalia fired at banana boats on there way into docking in Somalia. The reason why this happened was because the banana companies were aiding aideed, how? Aideed supporters say that Aideed collects a tax on the export of the bananas and also the banana company gives Aideed military aid. The U.S. going into there just gave them some other reason the bare arms and to kill more. Some say we are weak for withdrawing from the war. I say it was a stale mate and something pointless because that's there way of life. Basically Somalia caused many large armies to leave there countries and Somalia men are mostly a militia of unpaid workers or volunteers. If you believe the Somalia's won the war they didn't in military superiority but they made it a point that militia superiority is good to accomplish and achieve goals.

What I would have done or change would be, first of all if we got involved already I would've pushed hard in overthrowing these clans and form of government. In doing this we could have put a U.S. friendly government in the place of this anarchy government. I would've planed this war out more, studied the area a little better because we can be easily fooled by these people. Overall I wouldn't have pulled out U.S and U.N. forces.

Gods Must Be Crazy

Gods Must Be Crazy is a movie that tries to twist real life situations into a "comedy". First off, I would like to state that it does a horrible job incorporating both of these. This movie had pieces of reality in it, but mainly it seemed to me, that it was trying to poke fun at the different cultures of the world. The main culture it was trying to turn into a comedy was the American Culture. Based on this early observation I had, I immediately lost interest and appreciation for this movie. I do not believe the humor referring to the American culture and ways was accurate or even funny. Now this movie did have some broad but accurate points in it as it refers to human geography.

This movie can relate to human geography in the aspect of the African culture that is so apparent throughout the movie. The language, family organization, economy, government, and religion discussed in this movie are accurate portrayals of what it is really like. These were the only things that related to human geography and were useful in gaining more knowledge. The clothing that these African people were depicted as wearing was accurate and told a lot about their culture. These wardrobes were so much different then anything I have seen, especially since they differ from my clothes. I thought their clothes were very unique and interesting. Obviously they can make use of all of their resources and provide themselves with the necessities of life and do not need money. Making use of their resources was also very intriguing to see. With everything that they can find, someone will be made out of it. For example, when the coke bottle was there, they used it for so many things. This is interesting primarily because we use it as something to drink out of and that is it. These people could and would use it for everything. They are obviously not as privileged as us and can make much better use of their resources. I know the way they spoke was suppose to be an attempt at a joke, but I believe they way they talked was accurate. Their language, which involves "clicks", is a beautiful language. I find it amazing that they can communicate like that, it all seems to sound the same to an outside person. Once again this was suppose to be a good laugh for the movie (which obviously failed), but in the end was an accurate representation of different languages, and show the differences in cultures around the world.

The biggest and most well done representation of something that relates to human geography is family organization, or they way the family interacts with each other. They all get along very well and seem to never fight. They share everything and work together to get things done and seem to be sufficient. They are always together and spend day and night with each other. This is remarkable because as an average American, I rarely spend time with my family. I am at school, my parents work, I play sports, I have homework, etc. I am constantly busy and rarely get to spend time with my family. This is in complete contrast to how the African families were portrayed in this movie. In the movie, it shows the families working together, no matter what the task.

Custom Essays on Gods must be crazy

The last thing that may be accurate is how new technology, or advancements that are readily available in other locations, can really affect one's culture. This relates directly to the interaction of the people when the coke bottle is dropped on them. Before the existence of this coke (before it came in contact with the African people), the family worked so well together. After the emergence of the coke bottle, everyone now wanted to use it. Everyone felt as if it was a necessity. They are forgot how life was before the coke bottle came into their lives. This is what has occurred in the world. With the introduction of many things, arguments have risen, and bad things (as well as good) have come out of it. This was a large point of this movie, to make fun of how technologically advancements may be harmful to people's lives, families, and cultures.

This is a somewhat realistic view of the world today. It is way too exaggerated though. Some basic concepts are realistic, but it is mostly blown out of proportion. It is not a fantasy, but not absolutely realistic. Many of the ideas behind the movie were accurate and I discussed them earlier, but the total plot was not true or realistic. Many things were changed in order to try and make this movie funny, when in fact it did the opposite.

I do not know of any other movies, books, news articles, or anything else that would emphasize the same concepts. I have to say this was in a league of its own. The only other things that could discuss the same concepts are documentaries or National Geographic-type magazines. Only factual movies or magazines that involve the African culture relate to this movie.

I would never in my entire life recommend this movie to other students. The main reason for this is because it is very uninformative and if they were looking for something educational, they came to the wrong place. If they are going to study concepts that can relate to this movie, I am positive that they can find other sources which would be much more sufficient in gaining knowledge. This movie was not funny, was not very educational, and the concepts that might relate to human geography are minimal and not deeply interesting. I do not recommend this EPIC COMEDY.

In the Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" Gregor the main character goes through a series of mental changes, that symbolize how alienated he becomes from the humans of the modern world. Through the metamorphosis Gregor becomes more aware of what he wants and what he needs instead of what he needs to do for other. The metamorphosis also symbolizes the mental change Gregor goes through, as by not acting as much as a human than what he did before. Gregor's radical change of mind is boosted by the events that take place about all the lies that he was told about his family's financial problems. Thus causing a loss of caring for his family and a feeling of individuality. Which all start to alienate him from his family and the rest of human society.

Through the metamorphosis Gregor becomes more aware of what he needs and not what others need him to do. Throughout most of the story Gregor lives a life of serving and not receiving anything for his troubles. A life of servitude caused by his family who becomes in debt because of bad economic decisions. Gregor is asked to help but he feels that it is his responsibility to pay the debt his family has and his father decide to take advantage of this. Gregor hated his job, "Oh God, he thought, what a grueling job I've picked. Day in day out on the road.... The torture of traveling worrying about changing trains and eating miserable food (1157)". But because of the responsibility he felt towards his family he would endure it. He realized how he was treated " he was a tool of his boss without brain or a backbone (1161) " and yet said nothing and just would take it as if he where actually an insect working for the queen with out saying anything. He could see and knew that he could leave his job and that his family and his boss poorly treated him. While working he would see other salesmen and see how easy their jobs where compared to his. Slowly but surely Gregor becomes aware on how he not cared for or not taken into consideration what he needs more than others.

Gregors metamorphosis symbolizes how he becomes less human day after day, ignoring his needs to becoming a person who simply does not care anymore. In the beginning of the story Gregor wakes in the morning complaining to himself that he needs more sleep. " This getting up so early thought makes anyone a complete idiot (1157)". Through this quote Gregor demonstrates how uneasy he is with his daily routine. As well as how he wants it all to change but yet does nothing about it. He compares himself with other salesmen who a just starting to have their breakfast, when he is returning to do a check in. Gregor sees how well of he could be but ignores his feeling to appease with his family. Gregor begins to speak to himself about leaving and doing what he wants but just ignores the feeling and the desire to do off with the job that he hates so much. "Well I havent given up hope completely, once I've gotten the money to pay of f my parents debt to him, that will probably take another five or six years.... (1157)". Through this quote Gregor talks about leaving the job and doing off with his mean boss. He knows that his job is doing him bad and needs to get another, but feels the need to help his family more than help himself. Towards the end of the novella Gregor begins to ignore his needs and go on with life till he sort of has a mental breakdown, in which he believes that he is a bug. And he begins to act like one. Gregor goes through the change of caring about things to not caring what he needs. This changes him drastically.

Gregor metamorphosis symbolizes another change in which he becomes more distant from his family through discovering all the lies that his family had told him about not having any money. The reason he worked so hard and it was all for a lie, when his family did have money all saved up, just that they wanted more. He becomes les human like and decides to keep to himself because he is probably really hurt. The change the change that he goes threw in the metamorphosis change is mainly shown when he becomes less human and dependent on his family instead of his family being dependent of him. In the beginning he is the one that is supporting the family and works hard everyday to provide, but towards he end he goes threw a mental imbalance that make him incapable of working forcing that family to start caring and working for themselves. Gregor is less human like because he becomes unable to help himself making him depart farther and farther away from the human society. "The rotten apple in his back and the inflamed area around it, which where completely covered with fluffy dust, already hardly bothered him" (1188). Through this quote we see that the longer he begins to think that he is a bug the less he is caring about his well being. It no longer bothers him that he is dirty and that it begins to seem normal to him. This shows how farther away he is drifting from the human society, because like a normal human he would not like to be dirty if he knew that he could do something about it. He no longer sees what he needs or wants, as well as what is good for him. He just exists in his own mind as a bug that is just there. Gregors distancing from his family made him a bit less human since he did not want to interact with them.

Order Custom Metamorphosis Paper paper

In conclusion from the beginning of the book towards the ends Gregors metamorphosis has been a symbol of how Gregor has become distant from the human society and how he has become less human himself. Like in the begging of the book he was a person concerned with the welfare of others and worked hard to help them. But towards the end he became a bit retarded by believing that he was a bug and started to accept his surrounding and start acting like one. He became less concerned with his well being and that of those around him, but just did not care any more, just wanted to do nothing. He was not concerned with what he could do to help himself but just be there. The more Gregor went through his metamorphosis the less human like he became. Thus separating him from the rest of the human society and, causing him no to want to interact with his family as well as anyone else that he came in contact with, which caused his ultimate demise.

Cheap College Papers on Monroes Motivated sequence

Purpose To improve the traffic intersections in the US.

Specific purpose give, awareness' of problem, need for change, solution and action.

Central idea To get people involved in participating to help decrease our dangerous intersections.

Attention Step Gain the attention of your audience.

I. Attention I would like people to participate and improving out traffic intersections in the US. Overall, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, red-light running accounts for more than 00,000 injuries and more than 800 deaths per year.

II. Credibility Insurance companies looked at each accident and judged them so they can be related to the intersection that was at fault was indexed. The index weighed crashes with injuries more heavily done to those motorists, and crashes with higher amounts of physical damage weighed more than motorists with lower amounts of damage.

III. Relate topic on average, once every two seconds, 1,500 times an hour. In all, there are likely to be nearly 1 million auto accidents in the U.S. this year. By one estimate, those crashes will cost the country a staggering $10 billion in repairs, medical bills, and lost wages.

IV. Preview let's talk about awareness to the problem and the need of change.

I. Need Step Create awareness of a problem and the need for change

A. Point 1 I request that traffic intersections should be improved to lesson the risk of motor vehicle accidents.

1. Sub-point 1 The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says disobeying yield and stop signs -- is the most frequent cause of urban crashes accounts for percent of all urban crashes and 7 percent of the injuries that result from them, according to the IIHS. Speeding, including trying to beat a red light by speeding up and hitting another car whose driver anticipated a green light.

• . Sub-point Overall, according to the IIHS, red-light running accounts for more than 00,000 injuries and more than 800 deaths per year.

• Failure to yield. It may take the form of a driver attempting a left turn in the face of oncoming traffic, or perhaps trying to make a right turn on a red light when the way isnt clear.

• Following too closely, or tailgating -- a key factor in rear-end collisions.

• Speeding, including trying to beat a red light by speeding up and hitting another car whose driver anticipated a green light.

• B. Point Inattentiveness, such as talking on a cellular phone, tuning a radio or eating while driving, or simply being preoccupied and not paying enough attention to traffic.

1. Sub-point 1 People get too comfortable about an intersection theyve been through hundreds of times. They are so used to going across; they dont see the stop sign and the accidents occur.

. Sub-point Too often, drivers stuck behind trucks, vans or SUVs dont have a clear view of the traffic signals (especially left turn signals).

(transition) now that you are aware of the problem lets talk but the solution.

II. Satisfaction Step Satisfy the need with a solution to the problem

A. Point 1

1. Sub-point 1 Better traffic-signal timing aimed at reducing unnecessary stops and preventing rear-end collisions. Also, brief red-in-all-directions signals would prevent some cross-traffic crashes.

. Sub-point Adding left-turn-only lanes and allowing left turns only when traffic from the opposite direction is stopped.

B. Point [Click here and type your second main point]

1. Sub-point 1 Removing signal lights at intersections with a low traffic volume and replacing them with four-way stop signs or roundabouts--yield-at-entry traffic circles. This actually improves safety in many situations. A signal-removal program in Philadelphia reduced crashes by an estimated 4 percent.

. Sub-point Repositioning the signals -- or adding a light in another location -- is a simple solution which may prevent accidents. State Farm also recommends that traffic signals at high volume intersections have newer 1-inch signals (rather than older 8-inch lights), plus back plates to help them stand out against the sky.

(transition) Now that you know some solutions lets talk bout visualization benefits.

III. Visualization Step Intensify interest by visualizing benefits

A. Point 1 Participation in improving our traffic intersections

1. Sub-point 1 If some of you choose not to participate then the car accidents will continue and more death will come.

. Sub-point You could be the next victim in a motor vehicle accident and all of it occurred because you felt that improving traffic intersections was something you were not interested in doing.

B. Point the right thing to do is prevent death

1. Sub-point 1 obey the laws of traffic

. Sub-point respect the speed limit and pedestrians of were you live and not to rush from one place to another.

(transition) Now that you know about the visualization I will talk about a call for action

Action Step Call audience to act with specific "call to action"

I. Summary I talked about an attention which was to help improve our dangerous traffic intersections. About the problem that needed to be taken care of. A solution on what needs to be done and an action on what to do to prevent any more problems in the future.

II. Call for action I would like you to go to and read the rules intersection safety tips to know what to do when approaching a intersection and crossing and intersection. Or go to you insurance company and ask for a copy.

III. Closing Even though I have shown you the moist dangerous intersections and have found out that Dayton is not a city with these intersection doesn't meant that we should sit back an do nothing because Dayton can receive dangerous intersections.

The ability to think critically and incorporate decision making abilities into one's judgment rely upon factors that are consistently joined in the human experience. The authors of the primary text in this course refer to critical thinking as several abilities. All these abilities have one common factor. That factor is the understanding of how decision making is effective. To understand critical thinking one must not only realize the attributes but also the benefits of possessing the qualities of a critical thinker. Also, one must be able to incorporate this understanding into their present working atmosphere.

The authors of the e-text, state that critical thinking is comprised of three things. First, a critical thinker must have an awareness of a set of interrelated critical questions. Second, the ability to ask and answer critical questions at appropriate times is crucial. Finally, the thinker must desire to actively use the critical questions. (p.4).I would like to add to this definition. The key to all these habits is questions. One must question the obvious and accepted, in order to derive a higher form of understanding. Questions can happen for many reasons. We question to understand a situation, and the facts and opinions that surround it. We question to reapply the accepted and understood in hopes of finding a realization that will sharpen our perspective on a particular topic. We also question to form an argument upon which a foundation of dialog may exist and grow. By asking questions, "a spirit of curiosity, wonder, and intellectual adventure…" is created.(p.). This becomes a true melting pot from which critical questions and the decisions made beyond those questions come from.

Knowledge comes from information. Without information many arguments stray towards the use of fallacy to derive foundation. This is a foundation that will build an argument but because it is based on fallacy, critical thinking can not be applied to it. Therefore the argument becomes unsound. In order to avoid incorporation of fallacy into an argument, three options must be recognized and put aside. The first of those three are erroneous or incorrect assumptions. The second is the use of distracting or irrelevant information. The final option is the support of a false conclusion. (p.118).

Buy cheap What is Critical Thinking and Decision Making? term paper

The critical thinking and decision making process is not a simple process by any means of the imagination. There are two crucial blockades that must be hurdled when one begins to think critically. The first is the ability to separate our emotions from our logic and reasoning. Complicating the critical thinking process with emotions adds to the complexity of the issue at hand. The logic of critical thinking is inherently based on simplicity. Emotions cloud judgment and perceptions The second is the uncommon ability to question one's own views and beliefs after decisions have already been made. Although, while one creates an argument, there is a good chance you will apply these two abilities to other people's beliefs, it is the self recognition that is most difficult to observe and compare.

In my current working environment logical thought is tested as the standard everyday. In some situations, critical thought is prevalent as an automatic assumption. In others, decision making is clouded by fallacies and unclear facts and opinions. It is during these moments where only higher thinking through critical questioning can prevail. The "tough" decisions usually occur when all the facts have not been properly gathered or identified and someone or something has called for an early conclusion. It is during these tough decisions that somehow critical thinking is replaced by opinions and feeling that cloud the mind. A true critical thinker not only ignores such factors when making a decision but also embraces these factors for what they are. Being able to recognize feelings and opinions through critical thought allows one to set them aside in order to make a clearer picture.

What does all this accomplish? The ability to filter information through critical questioning gives one the understanding of an entire issue. From that understanding we can make well rounded decisions that affect everyone and everything around us. The complex process of critical thinking and decision making involve both learning tools and experience. These factors filter what we perceive in this life versus what is the truth.

There are many theories on how we learn. I will try to present the theories that are known and accepted at this time. The theories I will cover are Cognition, Habit, Humanistic, and Psychomotor.

Cognition Theory

Edward Tolman proposed the cognition theory in the 10's. He believed that our behavior was motivated by accomplishing a goal or to avoid displeasure. This theory stated that we have paths and tools, which we can use to reach our goals. One of his basic beliefs was that we do something as if certain behavior will accomplish definite goal.

Cheap University Papers on Theories on learning

Tolman's theory was different than most because he believed that we could learn without reinforcement. We can learn from experiences only if we are motivated enough to turn expectations in to behavior. Motivation has two purposes to allow internal tension to create a demand for the goal, and to establish the events that you will concentrate on (The Learning Curve, http//library.thinkquest.org/C005704/content_lt.php).

Tolman's theory gained wide acceptance in the 160s. Other researchers began to expand on his ideals, including Julian Rotter. His theory, social-learning, was that our fondness for an experience in determined by what value we place on the outcome. If we enjoy doing something or enjoy the result then we learn how to accomplish that goal.

Habit

A habit is action we learn by repeating it many times, so many times that we can do without consciously thinking about it. There are different types of habits. Some are basic such as opening a bottle of soda. An adult can do this with almost no thought, but a child must learn how to do this. A different type of habit is one that affects others. These are called "habits of adjustment" that are classified as good habits and bad habits. A good habit would be proper manners while a bad habit would be interrupting a conversation.

Most experts believe that unless a habit is beneficial to us we will not learn it. This is based on the ideal if we enjoy the outcome of the action we will repeat it.

Models of Organizational Behavior

There are four major models or frameworks that organizations operate out of

Autocratic - The basis of this model is power with a managerial orientation of authority. The employees in turn are oriented towards obedience and dependence on the boss. The employee need that is met is subsistence. The performance result is minimal.

Custodial - The basis of this model is economic resources with a managerial orientation of money. The employees in turn are oriented towards security and benefits and dependence on the organization. The employee need that is met is security. The performance result is passive cooperation.

Supportive - The basis of this model is leadership with a managerial orientation of support. The employees in turn are oriented towards job performance and participation. The employee need that is met is status and recognition. The performance result is awakened drives.

Collegial - The basis of this model is partnership with a managerial orientation of teamwork. The employees in turn are oriented towards responsible behavior and self-discipline. The employee need that is met is self-actualization. The performance result is moderate enthusiasm.

Although there are four separate models, almost no organization operates exclusively in one. There will usually be a predominate one, with one or more areas over-lapping in the other models.

The first model, autocratic, had its roots in the industrial revolution. The managers of this type of organization operate out of McGregors Theory X. The next three models begin to build on McGregors Theory Y. They have each evolved over a period of time and there is no one best model. The collegial model should not be thought as the last or best model, but the beginning of a new model or paradigm.

MODELS OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

reported by Efrain G. Escarilla, Jr.

Organizations differ in the quality of the systems they develop and maintain and in the results they achieve. Varying results are substantially caused by different models of Organizational behavior. These models constitute the belief system that dominates management's thought and affects management's action in each organization.

Autocratic Model

The autocratic model depends on power. Those who are in command must have the power to demand you do thisor else, meaning that an employee who does not follow orders will be penalized.

In an autocratic environment the managerial orientation is formal, official authority. This authority is delegated by right of command over the people to whom it applies. Management believes that it knows what is best and that the employee's obligation is to follow orders. Management does the thinking; the employees obey the orders.

The psychological result for employees is dependence on their boss, whose power to hire, fire and perspire them is almost absolute.

Custodial Model

A successful custodial approach depends on economic resources. The resulting managerial orientation is toward money to pay wages and benefits. The custodial approach leads to employee dependence on the organizations. Rather than being dependent on their boss for their weekly bread, employees now depend on organizations for their security and welfare.

The custodial model is described in its extreme in order to show its emphasis on material rewards, security, and organizational dependence. Its great benefit is that it brings security and satisfaction to workers, but it does have substantial flaws. The most evident flaw is that most employees are not producing anywhere near their capacities, nor are they motivated to grow to the greater capacities of which they are capable.

Supportive Model

The supportive model depends on leadership instead of power and money. Through leadership, management provides a climate to help employees grow and accomplish in the interest of the organization the things of which they are capable. Management`s orientation is to support the employee`s job performance, rather than simply support employee benefit payments as in the custodial approach.

Supportive behavior is not the kind of behaviour that requires money. Rather, it is a part of management`s lifestyle at work, reflected in the way that it deals with other people. The manager's role is one of helping employees solve their problems and accomplish their work.

Collegial Model

The collegial model depends on management's building a feeling of partnership with employees. The result is that employees feel needed and useful. Managers are seen as joint contributors rather than as bosses.

The managerial orientation is toward teamwork. Management is the coach that builds a better team. The employee response to this situation is responsibility. The psychological result of the collegial approach for the employee is self-discipline.

In this kind of environment employees normally feel some degree of fulfillment, worthwhile contribution, and self-actualization, even though the amount may be modest in some situations. This self-actualization will lead to moderate enthusiasm in performance.
